As children we desperately believe that the adults and the blanket are our solid defences against the things that go bump at night. When the lights go out, we try as we might not to leave any feet hanging about (who knows what's under the bed?), to ignore the odd noises (what was that?) and to succeed in falling asleep without screaming for help (...MOOOM!!!). As we get older, the lucky ones develop an ability to differentiate between reality and fiction. The rest becomes writers. A lot of us eventually realize that the demons which seemed to haunt the night actually live inside us and the only reason they crawl out when darkness falls is the lack of distractions. There's exactly nothing else standing between us and our monsters than the daily commotion. Nights are like a cocoon, isolating us from our fellow humans, depriving us of sight on which we rely so frantically. With nothing to distract us from our very selves, we're at mercy of everything and anything we tried to push towards the back of our heads. Steady wins the race; as you stop to rest after running away from your demons, your mind catches up. It always does. In this perpetual motion we swing between the extremes... nothing is extreme in nature. There are shadows lurking on the sunniest day and there are stars twinkling tirelessly on the darkest night. Your idolized self and your lowest urges coexist. Let them be, and the universe remains harmonious. As the sun sets today, face the darkness and become your own light. . Anna

The Growth 2/3 I don’t know how or where it began. It’s hard to say who snapped first, but the panic swiftly followed and the world as we knew it collapsed. Just like that. Too fast, too quickly to fathom. Whoever lingered, whoever stayed behind trying to comprehend or save any belongings, is lost now. That was the very first thing we learned – don’t look behind. The second – grab a flamethrower. And a gas mask; the stench is dangerous and attracts more of them to avenge whatever you manage to burn. Don’t get too hopeful, either. If you haven’t noticed by now, they regrow – and fast, even off the dead bodies, so it’s crucial you turn every host, alive or not, to ashes. You will know at once if you see any of the few people who still fight. Fire walks with them. When the flame dies, so do they. Eventually we’ll run out of the fuel, but maybe, just maybe, we get to set the whole world ablaze before it happens. Get used to all this silence, too. Ever since they entangled our planet, all the sounds are muffled. They have no ears, but they know when we’re around. It must be something in the protein difference… or maybe it’s just gold? My wife used to think it’s adorable each and every one of us had their own miniature gold vein, even if all that was to it were some ridiculous nanoparticles. They choked her. They turned her throat into a long neglected shower drain. . The Growth 1/3 We thought they’re us, just dead. They even smell quite as bad as human flesh when on fire, don’t they? What a casual sight they used to be. Natural. *Normal*. There is nothing normal about them. Their roots turned out to run deeper than anyone suspected and we were never anything more than unwary hosts. And to think that before it all happened we had developed a separate branch of science to understand them better. Treat them. Cure them. Care for them. The industry solely devoted to them had been blooming ever since the knowledge of chemistry had allowed it to be founded. After all we wanted them beautiful… we were fools. But who could blame us? The truth is just absurd. It wouldn’t have crossed the minds of even the conspiracy theorists cowering in their underground titanium shelters. X. 2/2 and final I don't fight back when he fits me in that little wooden casket. It hurts, but when he shuts the box and I land on the bottom of the pit he dag, the pressure on my chest hurts incomparably more. “I sincerely don't know what's gonna happen to you, Lydia,” he says as the first portions of dirt patter against the wooden surface. I'm gasping for air as if it's worth it. “But for this whole time together, I never told you who I really am or how I had learned about the Queen of nothing. I never explained my obsession. X. 1/2 He lifts me from the operating table and it feels odd, it feels odd to be held instead of being cut, but what his intentions are, I still don't know. He won't need me no more; I quietly hope his research concluded with something to put me down, finally and for good, and I snort when I realize how naive that is. Under the fluorescent lights he puts me in a barrow, carefully, almost gently. There is already something underneath me, hard and rectangular like a large box; a shovel joins me and we set off. I haven't seen the outside world for months. Or years. Or decades. Who could tell? It's dark and I feel a cold drizzle on my face, more of a mist than an actual rain. Wherever we're headed, the path is uneven; every wiggle of the barrow sends an explosion of pain to my stitched wounds. He carries a flashlight and I slowly turn my head sideways, trying to make out anything in this damp, chilly night. Uneven shapes start to poke out of the ground. They look like teeth, large, crumbled teeth, each stuck separately deep in the wet soil, but no, those aren't teeth, those are some old gravestones and if I still had hands, I'd bury my face in them for not having guessed it all earlier. I wait while he digs. He's struggling, but it's not his first grave. The drizzle is like a touch of a drowned lover, as soft as icy on my forehead and my cheeks. He doesn't say anything as he moves me onto wet grass of the asylum's old cemetery. The box lands next to me with a creak; it's a makeshift coffin, of course it is, but disturbingly small even for a cripple that I became. /To be continued .
