I feel like I'm progressively losing my mind logging on to Tumblr and seeing people say things like "wow, I wish we knew how splitting and switching worked, too bad DID is so under researched :("
My friend. Respectfully. We know both of those things.
We know way more about DID than the internet would lead you to believe. We know how DID forms initially, how alters split afterwards, what happens on a psychological and neurobiological level when switching, we know what kinds of trauma will cause DID and what kind of trauma cause specific alter types, we know what leads to specific presentations of DID, we know how DID presents across the lifespan, so on and so forth.
Basically all of this stuff is covered in the theory of structural dissociation. You know, that scientific theory everyone loves to name drop but no-one actually reads? You should read it. Find a PDF of The Haunted Self or Coping With Trauma-Related Dissociation. You will find basically everything you want to know.
DID was first added to the DSM-III in 1980 (although under a different name). But we've been studying dissociative personality systems since the early 1900s, and even that was based on earlier work in related areas. The theory of structural dissociation is essentially a compilation of all the research on trauma and dissociation from the past century, and it has been continuously expanded upon and validated by modern day research involving things like neuroimaging techniques. The references section of The Haunted Self alone is 48 pages long.
There is so much research out there. There is so much information publicly shared by credible professionals that can educate you on this disorder. Don't just assume we don't know the answers to your questions if you haven't even checked if the answers are out there.
Of course we don't know everything. But DID is certainly not this completely mystical disorder that no-one understands.

Yes, your friend will "change" if they come out as a system to you. They seem like they're changing because they're trying to unmask around you and let their alters be themselves and not hide amnesia and other aspects of the disorder as much.
I understand it can be hard to realize your friend isn't exactly how you thought they were, but they're still you're friend. It's likely you've met their other alters, they just didn't say who they were.
Please support you friend, even if it's seemed like they've changed.

CW: vent post about therapist trust issues as a system
We left our therapist a while ago now (probably like 6 or more months ago), and we keep debating on going back to therapy or not :/
Unfortunately, our last couple of therapists haven't been the best. From not treating my partner the best (about their disability and trauma) to straight-up doing improper EMDR (as I've been told by another therapist), that could have been dangerous for me.
It's so hard for any mentally ill person to have to leave a therapist who damaged the rapport you've built with them. And even harder to try to find a new therapist who you hope you can trust.
I feel like it's even harder as a system. It's difficult to even find a therapist who knows about plurality, let alone understand how to navigate treatment and complex trauma. But also, it's difficult to maintain rapport and trust with a therapist as a system. The therapist doesn't have to build rapport with one person but multiple alters. If one alter doesn't trust or like the therapist, it can impact the entire treatment plan.
Lately, we've been arguing about going back to therapy or not. A lot of us feel too betrayed and damaged by our previous couple of therapists, but also, a lot of us still need assistance in navigating our mental health and recovering from trauma.
We have a therapist we already have met and trust (our partner's therapist), but unfortunately, she's fully booked. She recommended another therapist in her office, but we're so nervous about building up this rapport again with a therapist just to have it broken again.
Therapy can be a wonderful thing, but finding a good therapist is so hard and so tiring. But we're thinking about trying therapy again soon with the recommended therapist :,)
(BTW this isn't a diss on therapy- therapy is a great tool, but it has its problems like everything else)

I often talk about reality checking and going along with it when helping someone deal with delusions, but I felt as if I didn’t really make it clear to what I meant when I said it.
Recently I saw a post similar to “how to sneakily give your delusional friend a reality check when they told you not to” and honestly, that’ll just make us lose trust for you. Because we can tell when you do that.

What they don't tell you about DID is that almost everything is just vibes. Literally just vibes. System mapping, inner world, knowledge about alters in general - vibes.

One of our (newer) introjects was staring at our face in the mirror for about 10 minutes. I asked him if he was okay, and he said something I thought I should share, ‘cause it might resonate with some of ya’ll. “This face is wrong. All of this is wrong. None of this looks like it should. But there’s something in our eyes that looks like me.”

For any system that needs to hear this:
Experiencing periods of silence in your brain is normal. You’re not making it up or faking or actually just a singlet just because you can’t hear other alters 24/7/365.

Well now we can repost our vids with the small time we now have left with that app 💀
Tumblr media
So crazy to think that Tiktok is now banned and inaccessible to us as an American.
Tiktok was the first place we felt comfortable to be open about being plural and gave us a great creative outlet and our first connection to other plural systems.
While we didn't post on there longer than a couple months, the attention we did receive from our posts was overwhelmingly positive and helped our self esteem overall and helped us be more comfortable with being plural in the beginning of our discovery and treatment.
I thought about reposting some of the videos we made onto our blog here, but it completely slipped my mind before our time was up.
I will miss our time there.
