Can a heart be mend like a broken platter?

I'm sure we all have once in our life, if not more, experienced a terrible circumstance where the results of it just caused us to "crack open" in a way. And yet, somehow we managed to bring some light through those cracks and eventually mend them and continue with our life despite that they're still visible in a metaphorical or even a literal sense.
