Until I started writing with the hope of becoming published, I hadn’t realized how much revision goes into writing a book. Anything from small edits, adding/deleting scenes, to changing plot points that alter the entire story. It’s a lot of work and a time-consuming process as even the smallest changes can result in alterations throughout the rest of the book. But it’s also very satisfying to read through the changes later and see how they have improved the story. After I finished the first draft of book 2, I took a month away from it so I could read it with fresh eyes. That “reread” has turned into an entire rewrite of the book. It’s exciting to see the story change and improve and it’s also made me wonder what the original drafts of my favourite books were like. Were the plots in the original drafts of The Hobbit or Pride and Prejudice completely different from the final books that were published? Because I’ve had a few people ask me where things are at with The Evangelina, I thought I would give a little update to those of you who are interested. Right now, The Evangelina is in the land of editing. I’m working with my wonderful agent to make the story as interesting as possible. I just did a major round of revisions to the story which will be edited. After that, the next step is to do a line edit, which is a very detailed, specific edit to make sure every line of the book is error-free and contributes to the overall story. After that, we have to do a major cut to the word count. The first draft of The Evangelina was about 72,000 words and it’s now up to about 105,000. We’ll need to cut close to 20,000 words before submitting to publishers, so that will be a difficult job. Every time I edit the story I grow more and more attached to it. Thank goodness for agents! All that to be said, there’s still quite a bit of work left on the story before we start thinking about approaching publishers, but that’s okay, it’s all part of the process. While I wait for feedback on my latest revisions, I’m working on Book 2. It’s been more than a month since I even looked at the manuscript so I’m excited to get working on it again. I have seen so many posts where people think they can’t be a writer because they don’t enjoy writing essays, papers, etc. - that’s not true! I’m currently in a block week course (1 course in 5 days) and there is so much writing involved, it’s killing me. I’ve been spending all day, every day writing for school and I hate it. I want to take a break from academic writing to do some creative writing. All this to say, creative writing is different from all other types of writing. Don’t let your dislike of academic or business writing stop you from writing stories or poetry or scripts or whatever you want to write!
