Anne's House of Dreams

It seems kind of silly for me to be reviewing this book that was published over a century ago and I've read multiple times. But I paid 99 cents for the L.M. Montgomery's collected works and I'm reading them all again. There are some spoilers her but, as I said, the book has been around for more than a century.

For a start, Anne has grown up in this book and she and Gilbert get married at the beginning of the book and move across the island to their new home. One of the things that occurred to me, reading the book as an adult rather than as a teenager, the story has to continue. But, Anne and Gilbert are happily, blissfully married and there's not much story in that. So Lucy Maude had to bring in some drama hence the woman down the road has had a tragic life that Anne and Gilbert experience vicariously through her.

Gilbert is kind of absent in this book. He's there but often he's off being a doctor or he's in the next room or he's in the room but not talking. I have trouble picturing him at all in this book but, as I said, the drama is with the woman next door.

We discover that the incredibly beautiful woman next door, Leslie, lost her father and brother as a young girl in a tragic way and her mother pressured her to marry an abusive, alcoholic.

Her husband is returned to her a simpleton after a head injury and she has to take care of him like a large child. Anne and Leslie become fast friends.

There is a woman named Cornelia who is a replacement for Mrs. Lynde. She has the same energy and nosiness.

There's also a man named Captain Jim who runs the lighthouse. Anne and Gilbert have a lot of respect for the man, saying many times what a wonderful man he is but I'm not sure what they see in him. I was kind of irritated that Anne named her first son James Matthew. I would have been happier if he was named Matthew James because I certainly had no problem with Anne loving Matthew. I loved him myself. But, why would she give this man she hardly knows top billing?

I shouldn't forget Joyce, Anne's first born who lives only one day and whose death breaks Anne's heart.

A writer comes to stay with Leslie for the summer so she can earn money to put a roof on the barn. They fall in love and he returns to Toronto.

Gilbert convinces Leslie to have trepining done on her husband's head because it has been used successfully in people with head injuries. She agrees and her husband is cured. His memory and cognition is returned. Only, it's not her husband. It's her husband's cousin who looked very much like her husband and he brings the news that her husband died of yellow fever 13 years prior.

So, she's free. The end of the book is Leslie finding happiness and marrying the man she loves. Gilbert and Anne move into a new home and leave the home of dreams behind.

All in all, a good read. I understand, L.M. Montgomery had grown weary of writing Anne stories and had stopped at one point before picking it up again. I'm not sure where, in her writing journey, this book was written but it seems a little forced. Fans of Anne won't care at all, and I'm a fan of Anne and I forgive Lucy Maude for all the perceived failings of the book because I love the heroine so much.

Whoopalai the Clumsy Cat is a wonderful 'kids' book for all ages. It tells the tale of Whoopai a cat born with Cerebral Hyplasia. Despite his disability he is living the life in Montreal Canada with his mom. It's a wonderful and inspirational tale about not giving up and being perfect as you are. A book I will definitely turn to when my own mobility issue get me down. I've been following the little man for years on Facebook and adore him and his mom.
