Last year my mother asked me to bake a homemade Hummingbird Cake for her birthday, this year she upped the ante with the request of a homemade Gluten Free German Chocolate Cake. This year had to be just as special as my mother turning 13 thanks to her being a leap baby! I simply used Mama’s German Chocolate Cake recipe on myrecipes.com and replaced the all-purpose flour with Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour. When you hear the words, “this doesn’t taste gluten free,” you know the cake was a hit!  Happy Birthday momma bear! So glad you enjoyed your cake!

The 80 degree weather today in California is making me wonder, where did winter go and when will it return? Since the first day of winter I had patiently waited for the perfect opportunity to shoot portraits in the snow. This wasn’t until two weeks ago that the California mountains were greeted by winter wonderland with two to twelve inches of beautifully fresh snow. Kristin and I arranged a shoot days after the snowfall, just in time before the snow melted away. The photos are up on my website, please enjoy!  Like what you see? There is still snow in California! Challenge 1: Design & Architecture. The image of the red staircase was taken in the Christ Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. Aside from a beautiful structure stairs provide a journey, from here to there. Even a bit of mystery if the destination is unknown. Challenge 2: Local Culture. The image of the three women was taken at Waimea Falls on Oahu, Hawaii. As I was drying myself off after swimming under the waterfall these women began a harmonious dance. The chitter-chatter stopped and all eyes focused on this moment. Challenge 3: Nature's Wonder. The image of the jewels of the night was taken at the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. My mother and I took a drive out to camp and take photos. To date this is my most success astrophotography shoot and I blame it on my good luck charm - my mother. Challenge 4: Me, In The Moment. The image of what looks like waves of bacon is taken on the Fire Wave at the Valley of Fire State Park. After a strenuous walk to the Fire Wave in temperatures over 100 degrees I took a moment to change my perspective. I snapped shots while sitting on the Fire Wave and [unintentionally] captured my silhouette.

In late 2011, before I was to leave on a one way ticket to Australia I stumbled upon Denis Smith's photographic project: Ball of Light. It wasn't until last night that I took a drive down to Coronado Island with a group of photographers to attempt the ball of light. Id say it was a success for a first attempt, I'm excited to do this again. You never know where the ball of light will end up next.

I follow many on Instagram one is Kendra Atkins - Beauty + Lifestyle YouTuber in Southern California. Recently I went through a bit of an acne phase and needed to change my makeup routine to a brand made for sensitive skin. Kendra introduced me to the Cover FX world and I am in love! Homemade Almond Milk thanks to the kitchn. “Real, fresh, very tasty almond milk. It's a world-changing thing”.

2016 Update: The process was quite time consuming and messy. The amount of effort put into milking the almonds through the cheese cloth only to have chunks in your almond milk, doesn’t taste too appealing. When you consider the time and effort alone you will grab your car keys and head to the nearest grocery store. Now the money...I made exactly one half gallon (what you normally buy in the store) while spending around $2.50 more on the almonds at Ralphs. Can you imagine the cost if I bought almonds at Sprouts or Whole Foods! Time consuming, labor, chunks, and costs more, consensus is I will leave almond milk to the almond milking pros.
