Effulgent Creatures

I stood with my back against the wooden cutout of our alien mascot and I could hear the distant traveler taunt me over the sounds of lost souls shuffling through the arena. There was a part of me that knew the laser-tag armor was just plastic but I didn't care. What was real anymore? Everything began to suck the moment that band and its singer came to town.

Me and QT worked at Retro Cosmos Fun Zone, a large laser-tag and indoor mini golf place for kids and adults. We mostly host parties and rarely is the place empty. For the tiny town of Cardinal Creek, it was the only other hangout aside from the mall. Otherwise you would have to travel out of town to find entertainment. I moved to the mountain town when I was 16 and I never looked back.

QT was a manager and I ran security. Even for a glorified space play place, you could never be too safe. We used to have animatronics but after too many incidents and vomit clean ups, we removed them. Now the stage hosts live entertainment. That's where we saw them perform. Effulgent Creatures. They were a flashy retrowave band that was asked to perform for a graduation party. I don't know if it was the alcohol or their music but something made that group intoxicated and crazed.

QT was enamored. He loved the new sound and the saxophone was enchanting. The lead singer was called Medusa and they sang like an otherworldly being. I too enjoyed the show but something felt off. We were told to host the party after close which was not too bizarre but I was told the band requested it. They didn't want to perform for anyone other than the party goers and workers.

It was played off as normal and explained away as not wanting to perform for free for others. QT bought it but I was not convinced. Medusa was so alluring and the music had a way of making you feel transported. I know we worked in an 80s style entertainment place but it suddenly felt like we were back in that time. It truly felt like we were transported to another place entirely.

Our cute alien Gigi Blu and their human comrade Ultra Spark fit right in and suddenly the place felt alive with new energy. Just as quickly as things changed, they changed once again. It did not feel so welcoming. The music played and I suddenly felt drained. I looked around at the crowded party room and everyone looked withered. Smiling and joyous but dried like corpses. I turned to Quinlan and they began to change.

I pulled them from the room but just as we made it towards the doors, QT was grabbed. The crowd turned on us and took Quin away. They knew I couldn't leave. I tried to call for help but nothing worked, not even slamming the locked doors to make noise. Like I said, it was like we were in a different place and time. No longer in Cardinal Creek.

At first the party goers kind of mumbled about. The Effulgent Creatures slowly took control. Medusa gave commands over the loudspeaker, taunting me as I snuck to the security office. I could hear Quin in the background. Met him the day I moved into town and I couldn't think of leaving them behind. Not in that moment and any moment after. I had to try and save him.

After I suited up with the vibrant green and gray armor, I grabbed some mace and my nightstick. I did not know what was waiting for me outside my security office. I would have grabbed more mace if I knew. The creatures lured me to the Meteor Tunnels, the place that connected the lazer-tag arena and neon golf course through colorful plastic tubes.

High above the entire entertainment zone, I searched for QT. The bubbles on the tubes let me see out over the different arena spaces and odd golf obstructions. I could also see the party goers shift and rock like living mannequins. After taking out a few of the aggressive partiers, I searched the thirteen hole golf course first.

I only found Gorgon the drummer and Minotaur the bassist. It was clear I was not going back out the way I had entered. I was stuck between the two massive musicians who wore bizarre garb. Neon and sparkly, like something out of a retro music video. I tried to run but Gorgon grabbed me. It was the first two punches that really got me.

They fought me and tossed me around like a beloved chew toy. Both remarked they wanted to keep me alive for Medusa as they launched me into the plaster castles and thin wood characters. A crashed ship was the final hole and Gorgon flipped me over the silver spacecraft. They laughed.

The cute little puppet that we stuffed into the driver seat sat looking at me and things began to blur. I remember grabbing the pieces of the spacecraft and going for the Gorgon first. My anger had filled my head and the blood fucked with my sight. It was all red and bright lights.

Soon the fight was over and the two lay together as I continued to look for QT. It was like Medusa kept moving every time I got close. I went to search the laser-tag arena. All the while different party goers kept coming at me. Trying to capture me or stop my progress. It was like they could not die. I feared Gorgon and Minotaur would be back for me.

That was when I saw Cyclops. They were in the main office and could see the entire complex from there. I knew of the secret halls used for emergencies and quickly ended their never ending gaze. This angered Medusa and they finally exposed their hiding place.

In the center of the laser-tag arena was QT and Medusa. I had to fight off more party goers as I navigated through the fake moon surface. The mace was depleted by then but I noticed the purple laser-gun stunned the lost ones long enough for me to knock them out with my nightstick. I began to play the worst game of laser-tag you could imagine.

I was almost near the singer from another space when they called a swarm of partiers to protect them. There were too many to fight off so I had to make a plan quick. The odds were stacked against me for sure but all I could think of was the years I had spent with QT.

We got the jobs around the same time and felt like it was bizarre. The first year in town and I kept running into him. Then we got hired at the same place and over the seven years went from cashiers and ticket counter to helping run the place. It was a great time in my life and I didn't want it to end. Not like that.

Looking at the four eyed alien Gigi, it hit me. I began to sing. Everyone including Medusa stopped to look towards where I was hiding. I kept singing. All those moments in that play place swept through my head. I could hear both of us singing as we walked hundreds of cakes to different party goers.

Retro Cosmos Fun Zone had a stupid birthday song we sang for every kid party and I sang it loud. Medusa was confused and so were the consumed. I was afraid but I kept singing and suddenly Quin Thomas began to look like themselves.

Whatever spell Medusa had on him under was no longer working and he knocked Medusa into the crowd of party goers. They turned on their master without question. QT jumped from the giant foam comet and into my arms. I pulled them through the crowd so fast I did not see what became of Medusa.

Once we got to the doors they suddenly flew open. We stepped out into the night sky and the full moon shone above us. QT kissed me and I kissed them back. We called the police right away but they never found the party goers or the band.

There was a mess left for us to clean and many questions to answer but in the end, only me and QT knew what happened. The party members stayed missing and there were no records of a band called Effulgent Creatures. Cardinal Creek slowly fell back to another quiet town in the mountains.

QT and myself decided to leave shortly after. We tried to forget about what happened but we couldn't. After a year of planning, we began to travel. We searched for months for any clues or remnants of the band from another space and time. Our quest has brought us to Chicago.

We don't know if this up and coming band is the same from before. Both of us are willing to bet our lives to find out. QT and I managed to sneak our way into the first performance of Nowhere Out. I will never forget how Medusa sang or how that band made me feel. Tomorrow will hopefully be the end of it all.

Escaping Evergone

The sun had set and so had his dreams. Kae looked out from the mountains, across the Blue Wave Forest and past the Once Again River. There was smoke coming from the rooftops and they signaled it was over. The moon was hanging high above and his love was no longer there.

It started back in Not Home Village. A place where travelers visit but never stay. Full of personalities and opportunities, the way station for lost souls was the place they met for the first time. Kae was but a shopkeeper and Stel was just a dancer. They used to stay locked in their places on opposite sides of the map.

Users and players would come and go. They met millions of others but this time felt different. In Evergone, not everyone truly lives for not everyone is born the same. For those born in Evergone, you are but a pawn in the game users play.

These players visit from outside Evergone and fulfill meaningless quests. They collect treasures, kill monsters, and win the favor of royalty. The non-user or nonus exist to help the users but rarely are gifted life of their own. When a glitch happens and a nonus is given life or a quest, they are quickly corrected by the Code.

Kae and Stel had forged their own paths to Not Home, never truly taking a moment to rest. There in the save space of Evergone, the two enjoyed a few nights together before deciding to travel to the Rumor Splice. They had been given a map from another glitched in Evergone who could no longer run from the Code.

Together, they traversed down the Once Again River and quickly learned of the twisted power it had. They had to take the correct turns or they would simply loop over again. The two worked together and they made their way to Karra Way. It was a tiny village that the Code rarely visited.

They needed some supplies to traverse up Cola Mountain and took the chance to rest. On the outskirts of Blue Wave Woods, they had their fill of food and readied for a tough journey ahead. In a coffee bar, there was a lone wanderer who had visited the Rumor Splice. They told the two of how it worked.

The Rumor Splice opened up once every few reset cycles. It would open up in different spots along the peak of Cola Mountain. On the map, they marked seven spots. The lone one mentioned how to tell where the splice might open.

In the air they will see miniscule sparks that look like fireflies. Once they gather, they will crackle like lightning before opening up to the outside world. Kae and Stel thanked the lone one for the information but before they parted ways, the lone one asked a question.

They pondered if the two were truly in love. The two did not know but knew they would escape Evergone together. The lone one laughed before whispering in Kae's ear. Only one can make it through the splice. With a wink and a smile, the lone one left the two to enjoy their drinks.

The next morning, Stel and Kae began to get ready when there was a sudden explosion. It was the Code. Arriving on their bizarre shaped ships and wearing pixelated armor, they moved quickly through Karra Way. It was clear they were not taking any chances. Codes rewrote anyone or anything that got in the way.

Kae and Stel escaped into the woods but not without being followed. Having to navigate the twisted neon trees of the forest was hard enough without worrying about the army of nameless drones. Kae had a plan. They made some marks and quickly hid in the trees.

The Code followed the marks and passed right under the two. Kae was almost caught when getting back down but Stel quickly subdued the lingering Code. As the sun began to rise high above, they made their way up Cola Mountain.

If their timing was right, the next reset cycle would bring with it the Rumor Splice and they could reach it before sunset. Kae and Stel moved quietly through the technicolor rockways, not wanting to wake up the Default Bats that slept during the day. Strange things on wings, the bats were always there.

They did not want to draw attention to their location. The Code was not far behind them and they hoped the different paths on the mountain would help keep the distance. Soon they were at the first spot on the map. The sun blazed high above but no sparks like fireflies.

Onto the next spot and the next after that. Just before reaching the fifth spot, they heard it. The distorted voices of the Code. They were surrounding the spot with otherworldly weapons and heavy armor. Their hope faded when they saw the crackles in the air. The Rumor Splice was going to open at that spot.

Kae and Stel knew what they had to do. First they lured some of the Code away from the others. They then disguised themselves in the armor to get close to the spot. Once it was open they would simply run in and escape. Only Kae knew he would not go with Stel.

He had wanted to tell them but he could not find the strength to. Kae did not want Stel to stay behind in Evergone with him. There was a part of him that feared he would if he knew about the splice. Another part of him hoped he would want to stay. Kae did not want to change the path Stel was on before they met.

As they waited, they whispered silly things to one another. The two had only known each other for a few weeks but it felt like ages. Kae wanted to know more about Stel. He wanted to know everything he could. Hear all the stories of the different users they encountered over their time in Evergone.

Just before sunset, a Code began to question Stel. Fearing he would be discovered, Kae distracted the Code. He began to act like he was glitching. Stel had told him about a time they saw Code glitch in the town where they danced. Kae tried his best to act like how Stel described.

It was enough for the Code to start questioning Kae. Soon the sound like crackles of a fire begin to stir. A thin line began to form in mid air. The Code did not stop their questioning of Kae. The Code grabbed him and removed his helmet.

It was too late. Kae and Stel began to fight the Code. The two worked perfectly together, as if speaking to one another without using words. The Code was fierce but Stel dodged and weaved gracefully. They took out a few of the drones when the splice began to open.

Stel called out to Kae who quickly knocked out a few more of the Code drones. There was too much Code to fight off and the sun began to set. As it slipped away, so did the splice. Kae saw Stel fighting their way to help him when he quickly called out and told them to go.

There was a sudden quiet. Stel stopped and Kae pushed away the Code. The two stood for a moment before Kae started saying goodbye. He told Stel how he felt in between jabs and dodges. Stel was suddenly grabbed by a Code drone and Kae had but one chance to save them.

He grabbed a recoder from a fallen drone and hoped he would not miss. Kae threw the powered up device at the wicked soldier, hitting it directly in the head. Stel stumbled before Kae said one last goodbye. The two kissed just as Kae pushed Stel into the splice.

The silence was engulfed by a powerful explosion. Kae screamed his apologies but Stel was gone. He was left with the fallen enforcers and his memories of the past few reset cycles. Kae will wait for the Rumor Splice to return and when it does, he will be ready to search the ends of the world outside to find Stel.

Virtua Incubus - Pt.1

*this is an adult horror story based off the Deadmeat 'Create A Killer' episode, The VR Incubus. i wrote this as a fan and hope you enjoy it like i enjoy the Deadmeat YT channel.*

You ever had a problem that seems so small in the end? One that starts a chain of events you wish you could have avoided? A chain of events you wish you could have stopped? That was me and my stupid essay. It was just another essay for English but it became so much more.

It was just like any other April day. Bits of sunshine, bits of wind, and that tiny chance of rain at any moment. I had to run to one of my favorite haunts because my cat broke my laptop. Had I known my roommate would be out of town and my sister back home in Illinois, I would have been more careful.

I walked down to YourElecSpace and enjoyed the warmth of the sun. The sky looked like wallpaper or some animated set piece. Arriving at the store I was expecting to see Chet but instead I was greeted with a new face. She was young and peppy but not my normal crew. I looked for Edgar.

In the back by the video games, Edgar was playing some sort of horror title about pizza places. I told him about my laptop and he was quick to help me. It should have stopped there. A quick fix and back home to work. I had to ask.

Where was Chet? Chet worked everyday except Sundays. Edgar went pale. He wouldn't tell me. He said my laptop would need to be fixed overnight and he went into the back room. I decided to ask the new girl. She was eager to tell me everything.

Chet was fired. He was also dead. The girl explained that he had been fired for looking at and sharing private stuff from customers. She emphasized private. The cops got involved and they found him dead in his apartment. Attached to a VR machine. There was a pause.

She looked at the only other customer in the store and leaned in. Chet was killed while plugged into a self made sex machine. I understood why Edgar went quiet. I thanked her and she said anytime. She told me to follow her on SpacePlace.

I had trouble sleeping that night. Chet was just a friendly face I saw from time to time. The store had midnight releases for games and movies, Chet was always there. I remember they had a screening of some old slasher flick and a tournament for Kombat Monster Smash. Chet was the one that set those both up.

The next day the sun was out once again but it had rained. The scent still lingered in the air as I walked to the shop once again. That scent soon faded to something else. Smoke. And then I heard the noise of panic and terror. The electronic store was no more. Only wreckage and ash remained.

Cops kept the crowd at bay but it was clearly a disaster. I found my friend Barry and a girl on the curbside. Barry was sobbing and trying to get free from the girl's hold. He kept screaming his sister's name. The girl told me all she could but the rest of the gathered people filled in the full story.

Last night three employees and two customers were killed. They were all fried and left connected to melted devices. I could not believe it. Breaking away from the crowd and walking a bit, I decided to head to the library to clear my thoughts.

It was my favorite place until everything happened. I was just losing myself to the scent of old books and a random mystery novel when the hysterics started. The lights began to flicker and even spark. One of the librarians was trying to calm another down as all the computer screens flashed with pornography.

Not just any nude women or men but the workers and customers who were killed in the recent accident. A few of the librarians were also exposed. Soon a few people who had been using the computers were flashed on display.

Try as we might the computers and monitors stayed on. The images continued to flash and taunt everyone inside. Then the true terror began. All the electronic equipment we had unplugged started to plug back in. I started for the exit.

I remember screaming as the various equipment came to life and attacked everyone. Computers choked and shocked while wires dragged and pulled people apart. A shredder devoured a librarian as I saw a winged figure escape through a high window.

There were sirens and flashing lights as I ran home. I don't think I slept that night. The next day it was raining. I went to my friend Dan's hoping for answers or at least a way to escape things. He was having his usual Dan Lan Party and it all seemed to line up. His party normally starts at noon and ends the next morning.

Virtua Incubus - Pt.2

When I arrived the Dan Lan Party was actually a mini detective ring. As Dan explained, some were playing Wigs and Warriors while most were trying to find out why places were being burned down. I told him my story about the library. He opened up about what they found.

Luckily or unfortunately, someone at the party had just had a monitor fixed at YourElecSpace. It all seemed to work fine until the night of the attack. The monitor flashed with a sort of virus before freezing up. A single image of a beautiful succubus stayed burned onto the screen.

The dudes knew the succubus as Elle Fira. She was a popular character from a line of adult video games going back to the late eighties. Brandon, the one with the monitor, knew the Elle Fira and the company Nomed Nomad were based in Seattle. Their newest VR game had just dropped seven days before the first fire.

I asked if Chet had worked on the monitor. He had. Feeling pulled in even deeper, I told them about Chet. Many faces turned from interest to fear. Those playing Wigs and Warriors were now focused on the current mess. I told them Chet may be behind everything. I don't know why I said it but I did.

Barry suddenly came down the stairs. We started to catch up when someone called my name. They started to expose some basic information on Chet but they said he didn't have much online. Mostly a blog ranting about celebrities and nude scandals. Others were suddenly on his page laughing at his various postings.

That was when the chaos erupted. One by one the screens flashed with the images of Elle Fira and porn. Not just any porn but photos of almost everyone in the room. Mixed in were regular images of homes and family members. Elle Fira could be heard laughing over static. The words 'I KNOW WHO YOU ARE' flashed on every screen before Dan pulled the plug.

Darkness. Only for a split second. Then the screens flickered back on. All the stereos and speakers were put on full blast. Sparks flew as wires once again came to life. Dan started smashing monitors but he was torn into pieces by all the collected cables.

Everyone near a computer was now being devoured or beaten by their own devices. Barry was trying to pull me up the stairs but cables began to wrap around my ankle. I looked up at Barry and he was suddenly gone. Ignoring the shocks from the cables, I tried my best to pull my leg free.

Brandon was having cables forced down his throat while another person was being hung by the rafters. Like a firework, Brandon came to life with a thousand volts and the place started on fire. I remember screaming when Barry was suddenly back. He had a meat cleaver in his hands.

With a swing and a spark, Barry cut the wire and I pulled myself up the stairs. I threw the cut cable on the floor like a poisonous snake. We ran outside before calling the cops. Neighbors were gathered outside. Lights had been flickering and people could hear the screaming from the street. The house was now engulfed in flames.

Something inside of me snapped. I wanted answers. Dan had just been ripped into pieces by his own equipment. Barry asked what I wanted to do and we agreed to leave the scene. Avoiding the police felt like the right thing to do. Would they believe a dead employee might have done all this?

I asked Barry if he knew where Chet lived. He did. They lived in the same apartment building. Meg would sometimes walk with him to work. We ran to the apartments. I don't know what was driving me but my instincts said to go to his place.

His place was easy to find, the only door with police tape all across it. I busted open the door and went in. The place still smelled of burned flesh and rott. Barry was hesitant to enter but I dragged him in. Together we looked over the bizarre scene.

There was a large burn spot in the middle of the living space. You could even see the layout of where the wires used to be. Bits of melted plastic were left and only a few things of equipment remained. I don't know what I expected to find. That is when we both heard it.

A loose floorboard. Barry was standing in a far corner by a fake plant. Under the floorboard was a memory stick. Just as we put the board back, there was a loud thump. It sounded like someone in the bedroom. We started to make our way to the door when it emerged.

A winged figure with scorched clothing and wires fused to decayed flesh began to stalk down the hall towards us. It wore a massive VR helmet and made a bizarre clicking noise. Barry pulled me out the door as it spread its wings made of electrical equipment. It charged forward as we left the apartment.

I remember hearing wood breaking and a haunting cry as we ran down the hall. The creature was coming for us and we needed to get out of the apartment complex. Nothing stopped the creature. I turned back as I saw a scared woman emerge from her home. The creature tore her head off as I made it outside.

We got to Barry's car when the creature took flight. It was chasing us even in the sun. Try as hard as we could, we could not shake the mangled mess. We missed stop lights and stop signs all while the beast destroyed anything in its path. Sparks even flew from street lamps and telephone wires above. Barry was in a panic and asked for directions.

I told him to head to the park. Something in my head was telling me to go there. To lure the creature away from town and destroy the memory stick. It was my only plan and I hoped it worked. The creature was a bit away from us when we got to the empty parking lot. There were no cars in the lot we picked but there were people enjoying the April day.

Just as we got out of the car and I stepped on the curb, the creature smashed down. Barry's car was crushed like a tin can and Barry was sent flying to the ground. I almost lost my footing but I watched as the bizarre demon turned to look at me. There was a buzzing in my ear and I remember feeling frozen.

The burned electrical monstrosity slowly climbed from the car as I moved backwards. I don't know how but I knew that thing was Chet. Then it was like a flash. I was suddenly throwing the tiny device towards the pond and the beast was getting ready to ponce.

Just as the memory stick smashed against a tree, the creature froze mid air. I remember the memory stick breaking into pieces as I fell to the ground. It was like something otherworldly. The wired covered thing began to scream and flicker away before suddenly bursting into nothing.

I thought that was the end of it. Barry and I grew closer. My roommate returned and so did my sister Sarah. I forgot about the essay and failed my class but things were slowly recovering. That was for a little while. Then my roommate got a strange message on their laptop. It was an invitation to be the first to try a new VR game called Elle Fira and the Virtual Incubus. The incubus looked just like the monster Chet had become.

After finding my roommate dead, it was just the beginning. Another chain reaction that I wish I could stop. First my roommate, then my sister's boyfriend, and then half the town. Now Barry, Sarah, and me head to Seattle. I don't know where it will end but it starts with the demon in the VR game.

Leaf and the Way to Wayturn

Long ago when love and magic flourished, there was a traveling magician who found himself on a hot boardwalk. Leaf The Magician, as he was known, had come to another small town to show his tricks and collect his worth. With Speckle the Rabbit by his side, he would delight the masses.

On this particularly prickly summer day, he found the crowd a bit rough. Leaf decided to take a break and rest for a moment under some shade. Finding a spot near the abandoned snow cone truck, Leaf and Speckle finally relaxed.

Leaf took off his teal top hat and took a deep sigh. Looking out into the ocean, he wished for something more than this. A life beyond collecting coins in his extra suitcase. Another deep breath and he noticed Speckle was gone. 

In a bit of a panic, he looked all around but could not find his friend. Speckle was nowhere to be seen. That is when he noticed the light. A bizarre blue light coming from his hat. When Leaf looked into it he heard music. He reached his hand in and was pulled into another world.

Leaf was greeted by Speckle and a vastly different place. No boardwalk, no games, and no amusement. Now it was storybook skies and fairytale forests in the distance. Leaf felt like he traveled to a cartoon world of fantasy. In an empty field near a dirt road, the pair took time to gather themselves.

Soon they were traveling the road towards the forest. They met a strange man dancing on a fence post. He spoke in riddles and offered little help. Leaf found out he was in the world of Wayturn and the road traveled to a large city eventually. The magician and the rabbit traveled on.

After escaping a group of roaming reptiles, the duo found a forgotten pink teapot just before the forest. When Leaf opened it a small mermaid emerged. Like a hermit crab in its shell, she rested her tail inside the teapot. Leaf and the Mermaid spoke for a while as the clouds shifted.

Mini the Mermaid told Leaf he was in a world beyond the beyond. Once you reach Wayturn, you never turn back. Mini knew of a way to take him home. She asked him to help her acquire a magical avocado. One from a witch's garden.

He agreed and the new trio traversed through the Shroom Forest and past Deadman's Grove. In a misty town they learned they needed to cross Siren Bridge before reaching where the witch lived. In the distance Leaf could see a beautiful city.

Once they found the garden of the Rosetta Witch, Mini told Leaf to be quiet and take the avocado without the witch noticing. She was inside her cottage making children stew but her scarecrows listened for too much noise.

As Leaf and Speckle snuck through the various fruits and vegetables, Leaf asked if the Rosetta Witch actually ate kids. The mermaid let out a soft chuckle before saying they called it that for fun. It was just a hearty vegetable stew.

They found the avocados and snuck away from the garden full of creepy strawmen. Mini the mermaid found a quiet spot under the moonlight and said they needed to head to her home. She told Leaf to pour her teapot and jump into the puddle he created. He did so and found himself under the ocean.

In her seashell home, the trio made the avocado into a powerful and tasty guacamole. When Leaf asked how this would help him get home, Mini burst into laughter. The magic guacamole was not for him. Mermaids can traverse the waters like a portal. They can also turn water into one for those they trusted.

She now trusted Leaf since he carried her through an unknown world. Leaf was a bit upset but understood. He was happy for the wild journey but was ready to head home. Pouring out another portal, Mini said goodbye to Leaf and Speckle before they jumped back home. 

Once there, Leaf not only found new energy to create a bigger show but Mini gifted him new attire to travel in. Soon Leaf and Speckle would travel the world with a set of tricks that dazzled all those who believed in magic. A show worth crossing the worlds to see.

A Tale of Princess Valia

Long ago when love and magic flourished, there was a planet that ruled under the power of the stars and it was called Estrell. On this planet with eight great domains, there lived a king in his mighty castle made of crystals. King Luno, as he was called, ruled over each domain and worked close with each domain’s leader.

King Luno and his daughter Valia visited all of the domains. Ventu had vast forests and groves of wonderful trees. Toma had a wonderful lake at its heart, with warm soft waters. Valia loved seeing all her planet had to offer.

A few days after her 19th birthday, Valia and the King were messaged by the leader of the planet’s army. Quimble, a strong and sturdy man, told them pirates from a neighboring planet were sending threats to the people of Essoni. The King left at once to handle the matter; sending Valia back to the palace of crystals to wait.

As she sat in her room for word from her father, Valia was humming a song her mother sang to her. Suddenly Quimble and two men burst into the room. Valia was told King Luno and his ship was seen crashing on a nearby planet. He went alone.

Quimble asked her if he could use the full army to lead a mission to Ozen to find the king. She refused. After asking questions of the three men, she asked the two strongest soldiers to leave. Trusting her father's friend, Valia told Quimble her plan.

Valia would lead a solo mission to Ozen and find her father. Quimble was reluctant but as he had trained her in fighting years ago, he knew she could handle herself. She only asked to keep this from everyone. They would communicate after she reached Ozen

Quimble promised his silence and told her he would handle the Eight Domain Leaders. Taking her own golden flying saucer, she headed for the Planet Ozen. Once near the icy planet, the Princess opened communication with the leaders and asked for a place to refuel her ship.

She used a codename of Mari while speaking with the Prince. They were under high security as a ship was seen crashing not too long before her arrival. Princess Valia told him she meant him no harm but she would do all she could to aid in their rescue efforts. As she landed her flying saucer, she was met with the young Prince and his guard.

Prince Colt had been placed in charge after the loss of the king and queen. He told the Princess he would wait to be called King until he found true love again. Mari told them a bit about herself and told the Prince she had come from the Planet Estrell.

The Prince had never been to the planet but knew someone had been trying to communicate with him about army supplies. As the princess found out, it was Ozen who supplied much of the galaxy with its weapons and soldiers. The Princess and the Prince traveled with the guard of five men. They used a small vehicle made of shiny silver that looked like an insect to travel the snowy lands.

The two spoke and learned more of each other’s planets. As they headed to the castle, Valia thought this planet and its Prince were of no harm to her and her king. Just as she went to tell the Prince and his team the truth, they were attacked. Their small caravan was jumped by a group of ice pirates.

Their skin covered by ice shards and frost all over their clothing, they were a fearsome crew. The group of ice pirates made the metal insect ship tumble over. These nasty scavengers had no regard for law or rules, banished by the people of Ozen for their wicked ways.

As the pirates attacked, the Princess told the Prince to escape with her. She whispered a plan to let the men take their supplies and ship and then follow them back to their base. The two watched as the nasty pirates tied up the surviving soldiers and took them slowly back to their hideout.

Within a small and secluded cave they found a gathering of people. Pirates and their prisoners. The Prince almost rushed into the enemy's camp when the Princess stopped him. There was a sudden change in the young prince that Valia could not understand.

As Valia surveyed the scene, Colt told her the truth. The Ice Pirates had been trouble for many years on Ozen. After killing his parents, the pirates had started kidnapping people from villages and towns until the Prince handed over the crown. When the mysterious ship was seen crashing, the Prince was about to set out with his men to survey the scene.

There was more to his story, only Colt wouldn’t say it. Valia had little time to find out as the pirates looked to get ready to leave the camp once again. Asking the Prince if he had any training in combat, the Princess Valia told him to cause a distraction so she could take out most of them. The Prince obliged and the two set out to rescue the prisoners.

Before the pirates could leave, Colt burst out from hiding and started acting cocky. Telling the group of ice pirates that he could take them out one by one confused them. As the group began to laugh, Princess Valia used large rocks to knock most of the men unconscious.

The rest began to fight her. Using her mighty blade, the princess defended herself. Prince Colt went to free the prisoners. Valia was quick and knew not to kill the pirates but only wound. She did not want their death on her father’s blade unless they were the ones responsible for his disappearance.

As the last pirate fell to his knees, he begged forgiveness. Valia went to work tying him and his gang up. While she did this, she noticed Colt taking his time to free one final prisoner. A man around his age. The two embraced just as Colt unlocked his cuffs. Colt had tears in his eyes as the freed man kissed him.

Valia asked the pirate if they had anything to do with the attack on the ship from Estrell. The pirate leader told her that his crew had been hired to send threats to the land of Essoni but suddenly the money and requests stopped. Then they were given instructions to attack the Prince and distract him with the crash. Valia thanked him for his honesty.

Prince Colt told Valia the rest of his story. The man who now held his hand was his friend and first guard, Teon. The two grew up together and after the death of his parents, Teon began to live in the castle with Colt.

A few months before the Princess arrived Teon was kidnapped and thought long dead. It was then that Colt admitted to loving Teon and thanking Valia for her help rescuing him. Knowing Colt was trustworthy she dropped the name Mari and told them of the pirates’ wrong doings with her planet.

Using her own ship and the information the pirate gave her, Valia set off for the crash site. Colt and Teon joined her in case she needed them. Finding a small wreckage in the middle of a vast field, Valia quickly searched the rubble for her father. She found him, barely hanging onto life. As the group freed him from the metal destruction of his saucer, the king wished to speak with Valia.

He told her it was Grievo of Essoni who had messed with the ship before sending it to Ozen. It was Grievo’s plan to kill the king, take the throne, and eventually the rest of the galaxy. As the king fell quiet, Valia said her goodbyes. King Luno told her to always remember his love and to stay as strong as the stars above.

With help from Colt and his Kingdom, Valia made ready her plans for when she returned home. Playing the fool once again, Valia returned to her planet Estrell and ventured to Essoni to meet with Grievo. She told him that the king was dead and she would send an army to Ozen.

Valia asked Grievo to lead an army to Ozen and prove his worth as king of the planet. Grievo was more than happy to oblige and quickly got ready to leave for the frozen planet.

Once boarded on his own ship, he was sent to Ozen, only to meet with Teon and Prince Colt. As Grievo began to make his threats, the combined armies of Ozen and Estrell rose up. Teon and Quimble boarded Grievo’s ship as a message from the Princess and Prince came onto his viewport.

The two told him he was caught and he would pay for his wrong doings. Finding a permanent place for the wicked man in the icy prison on Ozen, Grievo was quickly taken away by Teon and the rest of Ozen’s law force. The Princess thanked the Prince but he told her it was just the beginning. For helping him find his true love once again, the Prince would forever be in her debt.

In honor of her father and in honor of the restored friendship between the planets of Estrell and Ozen, the princess called for a huge celebration. Joy filling the two worlds, the memorial celebration lasted for days and not long after the Princess returned to Ozen to help King Colt fight the Ice Pirate Lord. Their adventures together were far from over.

The Art of ‘The Tale of Princess Valia’

- you can see how i always start with rough, rough sketches in a journal. i then take that and sketch it again in black and white. - the image with the two different Valias next to one another show the 'Color Palette’ process. i colored one and my niece, whom Valia is loosely based, did the other. - the last two images are the 'Final’ versions of the Princess Valia in her Princess Garb and Space Travel Suit.

A Princess Stalks the Night

There is a story from a small town in Illinois. One that starts many years back, when a young girl killed her family on Halloween night. Locked away for years and forgotten, she escaped on thirteen years later. Making her way home in the night to find her lost sister this princess would kill. While the kids were trick or treating and the teens got wasted, a Princess Shape stalked the night. With a pale white mask and blue dress, the shape lurked in the shadows while the sound of screaming fills the air. Always on the hunt, the Princess Shape stalked her sister as she babysat two kids. After picking off her family and friends, this sister was left alone to face the creature. In the darkness of the night, the brave sister faught back and lured the Princess Shape away from others. Alone together, the two fought and the Princess was subdued with the help of a local doctor. As the moon rose high above and the cops finally arrived, there was no sign of the Princess that stalked the night. The one with a butchers’ knife and a weathered mask was gone. No where to be found so the legend became a ghost story. Every Halloween night, teens will tell the story of a Princess Shape who stalked Haddonfield. They don’t know if she is still out there and no one knows when she will return home.

The Princess with a Leatherface

There is a rumor spread across the south, one that came from the heart of Texas. It says on an abandoned stretch of road, along a lost and forgotten town there is a monster. One that claims the lives of those who dare to visit. A Princess with a Leatherface. Long ago, a place for tourists to stop, now a place no one dares to go. Not many have seen her or her family but many have gone missing. People say you know when you found the road when the cicadas grow loud and the smell of rancid meat fills the air. If you dare to stop you may hear it. The roar of her chainsaw. This Princess with a Leatherface protects her family with no mercy for those who stop and stare. Some say they can’t find the bodies because the family eats them. Others say its because the Princess feeds them to the cattle. One thing is certain, those that have seen her all describe the same thing. This Princess wears a mask made of human leather. A different face, but still stitched up and horrid. Police say its just a rumor and town gossip. One thing is certain, if you find yourself on that long stretch of road and hear the sound of the chainsaw, keep driving. You don’t want to take a chance and meet the Princess with the Leatherface. It may be the last time you visit the land of Texas.

A Full Moon and The Lagoon: The One Wish

It all started when Dameris moved in with his cousin Asher at the beginning of a long summer. Dameris loved his aunt and uncle but he missed his old life. Most of all he missed his parents. One final year of high school and things would change once again. Dameris wasn't sure he could handle it. He didn't want summer to end for that would mean going back to school. Rather, going to a school where he only knew Asher and his friend Bec. The sunmer would not be an easy one. Not long after getting settled in to the home near the beach, Dameris found there was plenty to do around the house. His Uncle Peat was always adding onto the house. He was in the middle of a sun room and a furnished attic. Dameris could not complain for it meant he had a space all his own before he even arrived. Days and nights of painting and working with heavy equipment, Dameris realized he was halfway through his summer. He begged Asher to ask his dad for some time away. Asher agreed and the two quickly failed at their attempt. Uncle Peat understood and let the two have the week off. He wanted them to remember they needed this finished before the end of summer. They knew and quickly ran off to find something to do. Asher wanted to show Dameris the best spot on the beach. He pointed to a lonely cement plato that carved out of the sand and ended with a broken down metal rigging. With a shiny glint in his eye he said that its the best place to dive. The two head to the crystal clear water and the forgotten structure with quickness in every step. Not too many people are at the beach. Once they get to the end of the cement plato Dameris sees what Asher meant. Just at the edge there is a beautiful bouqet of coral creating a wonderful technicolor reef. It lays far below the waters but it is clear as day on the plato. Asher climbs the structure and dives over Dameris. Soon he joins them and the two spend the time exploring the corals and the fishes below. It is a brief moment of happiness for Dameris. One that makes him feel positive he can handle his new school. As the sun begins to set the two cousins sit on the edge of the plato and look at the sun hanging just above the horizon. Suddenly a large splash interupts the quiet of the beach as a girl with radiant copper hair swims to the reefs. As she surfaces, Asher proclaims it's HomeSchool Girl like some super hero. He quickly realizes his mistake and apologizes. She laughs and says nothing of it. The girl who lives down the road asks the two why they are sitting at the edge of the plato? Asher tells her its the best spot on the beach. She laughs and asks them to follow her. With a smile and her name, Syla led the two boys her favorite spot. As they swam away from the plato they headed to a small grove of trees. The reef became a bit rough and jagged. It was soon closer than before beneath the trio. Reaching the hidden spot, the trees seemed to twist and bend curving all along the shore. From a distance it looked like a rough spot on the beach. One that offered little sun or sand. Syla quickly ran beyond the trees and the cousins followed suit. Beyond the curved palms lay a hidden lagoon. One with emerald crystal waters. It lay just beyond the shore, broken by a small bank of sand and coral. As the three relaxed, they realized the sun was almost set. Asher worried for a moment but Syla told them tonight was a full moon and here, the waters would shine bright. She was not wrong. When the sun faded and the moon was full, it radiated a powerful glow that lit the lagoon perfectly. The three swam and laughed. Told stories and got to know one another. Syla was curious about who Dameris was and Asher was curious about Syla. Dameris just enjoyed a moment of feeling welcome. Not a moment of pity but one of comfort. Syla told the two that her father used to tell her that when the moon was full, you could make any wish you wanted. Any wish. And if you did so when it was truly full, your wish could come true. The three laughed a bit at this. Asher saying that wishes were for children. He believed in logic not magic. Syla laughed again and said she still likes to make a wish now and again. Dameris took a moment and looked up at the glowing moon. He stared deep into it and realized if he could have just one wish, he knew what it would be. With a deep breath he closed his eyes and whispered his wish. There was a sudden moment where the wind rushed over the lagoon but ut faded just as fast. He did not know it then but Dameris had made one wish. And his wish would change everything. *part one of a two part story*
