"I never met my great-#grandfather. Tonight I visited my #grandmother who is 91 and now in a nursing home. She told my step-father and I about her #father going to work and getting home sometimes at 3 in the morning. Despite getting in late, he was always out the door at 6 in the morning. When she asked where he went so early, he responded, "Peaches, it's not a place for kids." After bothering him about it a few more times, he let her go with him. They walked over 20 blocks before standing in a line over 4 blocks in length. It was the #GreatDepression and they were in a bread line where families were given a loaf of bread and a jar of milk. His #mother made sure that he was not put in classes that he felt were for the #disabled. She really pushed #education and he read #braille. He went on to get his #master 's, #bachelor 's, and #PhD at the #UniversityofMichigan. "My father's older sister, Alda Calligaris Romanelli was born in #Detroit. She met my uncle Paul as young people and they married. Uncle Paul served in #WorldWarII in #Europe and unfortunately was killed at the age of 25. She was a young #widow. She never had #children of her own, but loved kids and became active in the #GoldStarWives. Gold Star Wives is an #organization countrywide that garnered benefits for children that were left without parents, mostly fathers because of the war. My aunt was #president of the Gold Star Wives for several years. She would drive all over the country in the days when #career #women had it more difficult.
