She was a small being of the curly-haired sort, strong and sturdy and sweet-looking, a lovable mess of eccentricity. Her face was scrunched up in honest doubt as she beheld me from head to toe and tried to make sense of me. “The devil sent you to me?”
“The—err—He thought you might put to use a pair of idle hands, I believe. I can come back another day if you—”
“No, no, you are here now, and you’ve got two hands. Come in and sit on anything.”
The welcoming home was filled with objects of life, every surface full of little wooden trinkets that told stories from her many years of life, each dent in her carefully crafted furniture reflecting days of laughter. Objects of all sizes hung from the ceiling too, potted plants in knotted nets, and bundles of herbs drying in the hot air. The small room smelled of mint and cinnamon.
