Thoughts on Why Chenford Works, and Tim/Isabel Were Likely Always Going to Fail.

We never learned much about Isabel and Tim's relationship outside of the fact that her addiction ultimately led to the dissolution of their marriage. However, they clearly loved each other and will always care for one another.

From what little crumbs we did get, one of their deeper issues was that they were too similar. There are the superficial things like them both being cops and both being competitive (but if either of those were the issue, Chenford wouldn't work well either). But ultimately, they both internalize their hardships, have a hard time opening up, and don't let others see their worst sides (which everyone has). When both partners are like this, it's easy enough to proceed in the relationship. If you're hiding parts of yourself you don't want your partner to see, you're not going to push them to expose themselves either.

This works great - until it doesn't.

Isabel was struggling with addiction, and didn't feel like she could be open with Tim about it. As she told Lucy, there was also some unresolved stuff from her past that contributed to the secrecy and addiction.

At this point, we are well aware of Tim's own challenges. Given the uphill battle he has faced in the last 7 seasons to open himself up more easily, he likely kept much of his own stuff from Isabel.

Isabel's addiction was the breaking point, not the root cause of their divorce. Absent the addiction, they likely could have continued for years, maintaining a certain amount of happiness together while still keeping each other at arm's length. Tragically, they might have even been able to work through these issues and become a healthier, more connected couple.

Tim and Lucy's personalities are complimentary. Lucy generally likes to get everything out in the open, even if she sometimes pretends that she doesn't. Admittedly, her execution is sometimes flawed, but nobody bats a thousand. They saw each other's worst long before they were a couple. When together, they pushed each other to open up, even if they had to struggle through it. Frustratingly, their breakup and work towards reconciliation has been messy, but we do see them largely turning towards each other in times of trouble, not away.

Tim and Isabel being so similar likely made life together easy, but ultimately unsustainable. Eventually, life was always going to get in their way. Tim and Lucy's complimentary natures have their challenges but (after repairing their relationship) will empower them to move through life together.

mmmmhmmm something about early seasons Chenford where Tim is fighting so hard against Lucy's attempts to care for him, coming to a head in S2E01 where he punishes her for trying to protect him and then tells her (during a call) that her default should be suspicion, not compassion. Something about his defensive, wounded-animal hostility when she correctly identifies his learning difference in S2E02, and the way his eyes go huge and shiny when she tells him there's no shame in it, gives him the audiobook and tells him he's a great cop. Something about the way in the next ep, he lets her set him up on a date, and starts discussing his personal life with her and how he just keeps getting softer with her from there on. She really did crack that man open like a bird bashing a snail on a rock to get at the soft underbelly, huh
