Hey so like genuine question, how do you turn your brain off and stop overthinking the little logic details?
I have a fic I want to write and am going to as soon as i make some progress on my other WIPs, but the question of "How do they get Groceries?" popped into my head and won't leave me alone. This is set in like the early 2000s btw so delivery services were less obviously a thing.
Sometimes these things are fun to puzzle out, sometimes they're annoying as all hell. Just curious what other people do

pt. 4
super fast can mean a couple days right?
I really liked the portion of the book that was just the boys traveling and Gilan teaching them.
Solidifying his role as the big brother.
He seemed both patient and stressed at the same time and y'know what? Fair.
I too would be really worried if I was babysitting a pair of sixteen year old boys, friends no less, who were not the most careful pair in a different country which seemed to have it's own mysterious disaster strike right as ours had just entered a war, and we needed their army so we all didn't die.
He hid a lot of his stress well though, he seemed very levelheaded during the tenser moments.
I really like Will. I like his character, I feel like he's decently well rounded and a good protagonist. He's probably my favorite character.
I really really like how annoying he is. I like that he trys to act like he knows more than he does when trying to impress both Halt and Gilan, and gets humbled both times. He made that same mistake about a year apart, and it should have been annoying because didn't he already learn this in the first book? Yes. Does he need to learn it again in this book? Also Yes. He's a kid whose trying to make a good impression on people he respects and show off to one of his friends and he fails spectacularly at it each time because he's young and learning and an apprentice.
One of his greatest strengths is his mind, and how smart he is. A flaw is that he doesn't want people to see he doesn't know something, a flaw that could be detrimental to being a Ranger.
He's learning this lesson multiple times without it being over done, and that makes him more likeable because it's such a real flaw, but not excessive and annoying.
I also really like the fact that while Horace and Will are close friends in this book, there were still a couple of rocky moments, because their relationship changed so recently. A lot of other stories would skip over any awkwardness in a relationship like this because it's not the focus anymore. Their friends now, it's a done deal right? NO. They had an argument and moved past it almost immediately because they're friends now but that doesn't erase the rest of their lives.
I was pulling my hair out when they started sparring though because guys you're not safely in familiar territory anymore and there's something weird going on.
I also really like that the two of them are freaking each other out about the situation more than they need to. Theyre kids. They're scared. It's great.
Will's love for Tug conquers all. Adorable. He loves Tug. He feels so bad he didn't listen when Tug warned him about the bandits. So sweet.
The bandits getting their asses beat.
Evanlyn you scared the life out of everyone, Welcome aboard.
Gilan trusting Will to lead and keep everyone is so sweet. He believes in Will and i just. My heart. They're brothers you're honor they love each other.
Gilan leaving the kids thinking they'll be safe is. This man is about to feel so guilty.

pt.3 BOOK 2!!!!
Halt is a Dad. He is such a Dad. I loved him in this book. Sending Will away on a "safe" mission (honey, you've got a big storm coming) so he can relax even in a time of war and regain trust in himself is so sweet.
He was so like, idk loving? when talking to Gilan about this mission. The vibe to me was just "I'm proud of you and trust you, you have nothing to worry about. I've seen what you've become and know you can do this"
All three of them ribbing on each other when Gilan first arrives, they're so comfy with each other!
Also recommending Horace in part because he's Will's friend and he wants to let these kids just, be kids together? I have cavities.
And THEN. They've gone on the mission. His two boys are out of the house, off on a journey and he's stuck in Araluen. And he's coping. He's coping in a very healthy and normal manner.
He's coping by throwing people into moats. Hilarious.
Arald, Rhodney and Lady Pauline put their heads together, figure out that it's empty nest syndrome, and decide to shove a happy child who needs a little bit of reassurance in his general direction: Alyss.
They think this will solve him chucking people into moats.
She tells him to do it again. Beautiful, this is so fun. Half the time they're on this mini journey Halt's thinking about Will. It's great.
I have a lot of feelings for this family can you tell?
The romance is clunky. That's like my big negative for this book. Alyss declaring when she was young that she was going to marry Will? Very cute. Her telling his dad that? Why? that's my only complaint with it why would she tell him that?
Also everyone being hung up on Pauline and Halt maybe being a thing in the past? It wasn't really confirmed, heavily implied maybe, and I think that two people who are dedicated to their jobs drifting apart and ending a relationship, then years later getting back together as they've both grown and missed the other person in that way and coming out of it stronger is a super sweet story. It'd be adorable. But it's like, thrown in there by other characters? and it's out of place almost? especially since their country just entered war?
I had a similar problem with the kiss in book one. Objectively? very sweet, i didn't mind it. But their was a lack of build up that made it a bit shoehorned in? It was a lot more obvious in this book though.
Thankfully, we don't spend all that much time on the romance subplots because those were not working at this moment.
I was very surprised when the war kicked off immediately. I was expecting it to build for at least a few books, and it to take like six to get sorted or something, but no. We're just in it now.
It didn't feel too sudden though. It felt very much like this was something Morgarath had set up over that past fifteen years, and the events of the story only started because He was finally ready, not because our heroes were ready to confront him.
I like that. He wasn't dragged out as the ultimate evil of the world, nobody can stop him except these young upstarts. He's a warlord, and he's acting like it. He didn't have much of a character, just a menacing presence for our protagonists to shiver at, but he did serve the story well.
pt 4 incoming super fast, that one will focus on the goings on in Celtica, and then pt 5 should be focusing more on the end of the book. I had a lot more to gush about in book 2 then i thought.

pt. 2
I loved it. I'm well past book one but i loved it. My assorted thoughts out of order that nobody asked for because im screaming
I really really like how Horace was handled. When the three bullies started on him, it was a little bit of "yeah a taste of your own medicine, learn empathy you little shit", because he was mean to Will. And it's made very clear that Will bit back, verbally, and no one party was truly in the right, but Horace was the one to start shit and used his greater physical prowess to his advantage. So with three older boys giving him hell, he might reflect a little. And that's a fine way to write a bully learning and changing.
But then. In the same scene they were introduced, the bullies took it all a step further, and messed with everyone else's things, and forced Horace to clean it up and, possibly, take the fall. In a place like Battleschool, with how strict it is? That's dangerous. And it kept building and building every time we see them. When Harvest day comes, and Will and Horace have their fight, it doesn't feel good. Because even with his actions in the moment, I felt for the kid. He felt like his friends betrayed him, while everywhere else he went his life was made a hell. The only respite was training, and that's just because it was out in the open where the bullies couldn't reach him.
And when Rhodny breaks up the fight, there is a sense of dread. Not just because it could make Rhodny think Horace is more violent then he actually is and kick him out, but because Will and Horace both aren't finished with each other. Their both angry and hurting and this fight is not over.
And then suddenly, it is. They both do their best to defend the other from the boar. They exchange words of peace. But due to the nature of the moment, a lot is left unsaid. Then the three bullies go after Horace. Then they go after Will. And again, they defend each other. And they trust each other. They are friends. Not best friends mind, there's a long ways to go, but they are in each other's corner, and through all this, Horace did gain empathy, and a greater moral compass. It didn't come out of nowhere, but it was strengthened. I really really like how it was done.
Halt being just subtly caring for a lot of the book, so it's hard for even the reader to see just how deeply he cares for Will at any given moment up until the second boar, where he just runs and Hugs Will. In front of Everyone.
That is Halts Son.
I'm going to have to reread this and pay special attention to Halt. Will captured most of my attention he is the baby boy.
Halt and Will working together to pull one over Gilan.
Also Gilan.
So silly that right before he showed up Halt was like "Former apprentices always go after their masters" and Will is about to be like "i won't" and then thought about it for a second longer and shut his mouth because. Yeah. He will.
I absolutely adore Tug. That is a good horse.
The run down of archery, the bows, and the specifics given is, while not in depth, is REALLY FING ACCURATE! LIKE THAT NEVER HAPPENS IM SO HAPPY. I DO ARCHERY AND WAS METALLY PREPPING TO SUSPEND MY DISBELIEF BUT I DIDN'T HAVE TO REALLY!
I mentioned this briefly in my first post, but I love the pacing. More than halfway through the book and we finally get plot. And none of that time was wasted, it was all spent learning the characters and world and getting comfortable so that when things are disrupted it feels disrupted.
I like that Will was a little awkward around Gilan, just because he's a new person. Like yeah they got along right away but they weren't just instantly besties.
The fight with the Kalkara was really tense and well done on all sides. The tracking was interesting, The fights were cool and believable, I was half convinced someone was going to die, and everyone's skills and fears were on full display, and made them feel more real. Even when Will got his certified Protagonist Moment TM it felt both earned and not out of place, or like the plot just decided to make it happen. The set up and pay off were both well executed.
I also really love that the adults do their best to make sure Will is as safe has possible. He's just a boy and while he does save them in the end, they do everything they can to protect him, even if it is an all hands on deck situation.
During the tracking, Halt taking every opportunity to teach Will and comfort him. The moment with the false alarm of not being able to see Gilan comes to mind. And Will just being so concerned for Halt's safety. Will and Gilan having some moments together. They're family your honor.
Halt and Gilan embracing when they first meet up on the way to the Gathering. Such a cute moment.
Actually Halt's training style in general was a highlight. It's a little bit of tough love but he makes sure to get through to Will what he's trying to teach and feels more patient then he wants to let on. It's really sweet.
The story of Wills bio father nearly made me cry. Oh my gosh such a tender moment on all sides. ow.
That's all I have to say on book one for now. Ive got plenty for book 2 though, and im like, 2/3 through book 3? ive got 11ish chapters to go. Im buying 4 and 5 tonight, they don't have 6 or 7 though. they can be easily obtained, but it's still sad. Might also get book 8 just to make sure i have it in case they sell the rest of the latter half of the series before i can get my grubby hands on it.
pt3 coming at some point!

pt. 1
So. I started reading The Rangers Apprentice last night, and I only got up to chapter six i think (Will's just arrived at Halt's cottage for his first day of training and Halt remarks that at least he's on time and already had breakfast). And. I'm in love. Im buying the first three books today.
Anyways, assorted thoughts.
I really like the dynamic all of the wards have with each other. Like yeah these are kids who grew up together and love and get on each other's nerves in equal measure.
Will and Alyss being the only two who don't remember their parents is both heartbreaking and makes perfect sense in a weird way? I don't really know how to explain it but it just fits.
It also makes them confiding in each other about what craft their aiming for that much more impactful.
But it's also infinitely funnier to me that Alyss didn't look up. They've known each other their entire lives, literally, and she didn't. Look. Up. Comedy gold.
I just about cried at Will's reasoning for battleschool.
For whatever reason, Martin reminds me of a rat. I want to hit him with a frying pan. He's delightful.
I loved all the Craftmasters. Yeah their personalities and descriptions aren't groundbreaking or anything but they still seem neat.
Chubb's wooden ladle.
Jenny and Chubb's entire interaction. Him hitting her on the head. so great.
Will being able to feel Halt's eyes on him is so good. Like yeah! He's a natural! (I hope he falls on a face a few times while training but I love the detail that he was chosen because of his potential, not because he'll be perfect out the gait, and I like that his potential as a ranger is in obvious to him.
Will's pranks and mischief is so good. I love that detail. And the bunnies oh my gosh. I was laughing with Lady Pauline.
The second that paper was mentioned in knew what Will was going to do.
I did however think that the paper would be blank.
Will just causally doing. All of That. to get up the tower. Holy shit. Horrifying. scaling the wall especially.
I hope someone told the guard on duty what was happening right above his head i think his reaction would be funny.
My heart stopped when Halt grabbed Wills hand. Like I could tell it was coming there was no way he wasn't getting caught but i was still startled for some reason.
I hope nobody told the guards outside Baron Arald's office anything about what happened that night. Let them be confused.
Baron Arald is the funniest character so far and nobody laughs. "This time, use the stairs." Hilarious! that was so funny. poor guy is taken way to seriously i love him.
I really like the pacing so far. just something ive noticed. I takes it's time and lingers on certain scenes where other books would jump ahead. I like it.
I think ive forgotten how much i love this part of a story. it's the beginning. Ive just met the characters. I've got no idea what happens next. The plot hasn't really kicked off. The big bad is just in the distance. It's nice. It's relaxing. I love it.

i had thoughts (this is a future au sonic and shadow are like, 23 and 24 here tails is like 16)
Sonic and Shadow go on an adventure together. What happened isn't really important, just standard fair. The important bit is that it is just Sonic and Shadow, it takes about a week, and Tails doesn't know the details of the adventure, but isn't too worried. Sonic and Shadow could be together, or could be in the awkward phase of not together but not not together and aware of their feelings for each other, take your pick.
And during this adventure, Sonic learns that Shadow is essentially homeless and jobless. He then requests (forces) Shadow to start living with him and Tails. Shadow agrees (he had no choice).
So Shadow and Sonic disappear together for a week. Afterwards Shadow starts living with them. Sonic has had a crush on Shadow for years. Tails has heard about it non stop.
There is only one logical conclusion for Tails to come to.
They got married.
Tails is a bit miffed he wasn't invited, but it seems nobody was and Sonic's never really been one to plan things ahead so its mostly fine.
For the first week Tails is normal with Shadow (their relationship has progressed over the years, its no longer on sight more of mutual respect) but is a menace to Sonic in a way only little brothers can be.
Sonics worried that his little brother is mad he invited Shadow to stay, but relaxes as Tails calms down. Plus Tails wasn't upset with Shadow, and isn't hesitant to tell Sonic that he crossed a line when he does so it's probably fine.
Months go by, everything's fine, and something something Tails is talking to someone maybe? and he refers to Shadow as his brother in law.
Shadow does a double take.
What?
Shadow takes a moment to process that Tails' brother in law -> married to Tails' brother -> married to Sonic
And he like "Tails, Sonic and I aren't married"
And Tails is like "Yes you are"
"No?? We're not??"
"Yes you are. I'd know. I filed the paperwork"
Shadow has to do another double take.
WHAT??
He can barely begin to process the implications of all of this, so he focuses on a detail that is both concerning and doesn't lead to a big emotional conversation. He has to mentally prep for those.
"How'd you forge my signature?"
And Tails just kinda gives him a look like
Tumblr media
Because Sonic's not a paperwork guy, and Shadow didn't do it, and because the two of them are the way they are, it probably didn't even occur to either of them that paperwork needed to be filed and it would just be faster if he took care of it.
And that's how most paperwork is for most of their friends, an afterthought if its a consideration at all. So Tails takes care of most of it. He enjoys it. Tails can do everyone's signature.
Amy is an exception, but he still double checks hers.
Of course he knows Shadows' signature. He put it in documentation before Shadow ever did.
Who do you think got Shadow citizenship? Not G.U.N. They would've put him under their jurisdiction. That's not freedom.
And of course he was the one to fill out the marriage certificate. It was the closest he was able to get to being there since it was so all of a sudden. It's why is rein of terror only lasted a week, not a month or so.
Tails is starting to think his brother in law is a bit of an idiot.
Shadow is still losing his mind. He didn't think he was married, but now he's not so sure. And that's scary, because if anyone should know that he's married, least of all to the guy he really really likes, it should be him.
Sonic has no idea this conversation has taken place.
