Flags for types of intersex variations
I made some pride flags for different types of intersex variations 💜 Bright versions on the right, sensory friendlier versions on the left.
Environmentally intersex: having an intersex variation caused by prenatal conditions, such as in utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol or synthetic progestins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flag features a placenta. The placenta icon used is by onclang and is CC BY 3.0. As such, I'm releasing this flag as CC-BY-4.0. 💜
Genetically intersex: having an intersex variation with any genetic basis! Examples include 46,XX with SRY and CAH.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flag uses this symbol by Koson Rattanaphan and is CC BY 3.0. As such, I'm releasing this flag as CC-BY-4.0. 💜 Chromosomally intersex: having an intersex variation caused by having different sex chromosomes than 46,XX or 46,XY! Examples include Trisomy XXY and Monosomy X.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flag depicts anaphase (the stage in mitosis when chromosomes move to opposite sides of the about-to-divide cell). If a chromosome winds up on the "wrong" side nondisjunction happens, which causes chromosome aneuploidies. Based on this CC-BY-SA 4.0 image from WC. As such, this flag is also CC-BY-SA 4.0. 💜
Genitally intersex: being intersex and having any sort of genital variation! Examples include ambiguous genitalia, hypospadias, micropenis, labial fusion, and vaginal atresia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The icon in the middle is based on the first diagram in this infographic on human genital development. It depicts the genital tubercule before any sexual differentiation. I chose the colours so that it would look like a combination of the 🍑 and 🍆 emojis, which made me happy 😅. This one is public domain. 💜
Pelvically intersex: being intersex and having any sort of variations of the internal sex organs! Examples include gonadal variations like ovotestes and gonadal dysgenesis, and ductal variations like Müllerian agenesis and PMDS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The icon in the middle is based on the first diagram in this infographic about sexual differentiation, depicting both the Wolffian and Müllerian ducts with the the gonads, before any sexual differentiation happens. It's based on a CC-BY-3.0 image by Teixeira, Rueda & Pru, so this flag is also CC-BY-3.0. 💜
Hormonally intersex: being intersex and having any sort of hormonal variation. This is a new variant on the flag I made earlier this year, putting it in the ring to be like the other flags here. It is public domain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
💜 Square versions for avatars & SVG versions available here. Thank you to @scifimagpie and @goingrampant for feedback on prototypes!
Tagging @intersexflags @varsex-pride @radiomogai @liom-archive for archival! 💜

Alternate intersex symbols
@lexicalblog recently suggested a new astronomy-inspired symbol for intersex that made me go "oooh!"
I'm personally exited for any alternative to the Mercury symbol 👍️ (Mercury is a reference to the h-slur, and was invented by biologists)
So I made some SVG/PNG symbols based on Lexi's idea! 💜 These are derived from this gender symbol from Wikimedia Commons. ......... intersex .......................... intersex fem ................... intersex masc
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.... intersex enby .............. intersex transfem ............ intersex transmasc
SVGs: available here
Copyright: these are all copyright-ineligible (i.e. public domain) - but please credit Lexi for the symbols. The idea was hers, I just made them into SVGs.

Some specific intergender flags
I made these all in late June 2024 as part of my review of intersex flag mashup techniques, and only now realized I never posted these specifically to Tumblr (Whoops! 😅)
These are all flags for specific intergenders (genders that are influenced/connected to being intersex). They all take the most common flag for the combining gender and add intersex yellow stripes to the top and bottom. 💛
Inter-xenogender................ inter-agender................... inter-bigender
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
inter-genderqueer................. inter-neutrois.......... inter-trigender
inter-neutralgender..... inter-genderapathetic........ inter-maverique
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inter-maverique is maverique in a specifically intersex way, inter-genderapathetic is gender apathy that is specifically connected to being intersex, and so on. 💜
I am under the impression that all the source flags used here for intergender mashups are public domain on the basis of Threshold of Originality. My mashups are all public domain as a result. 💛
I posted SVGs to Wikimedia Commons back in June 2024.

Intersex & intergender sex worker flags
The red umbrella is a symbol of sex workers & sex worker rights. It represents beauty & resistance to attacks on social workers. ❤️
Top: intersex (intersex purple on intersex yellow background) Bottom: intergender (intersex yellow on intersex purple background) Sensory friendlier versions on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Requested by: @scifimagpie
Licensing: the umbrella icon comes from Font Awesome by Dave Gandy, and has a Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. As a result, I am releasing the flags as CC BY-SA 4.0 (the newer, compatible version of the same license).
Square versions for avatars/etc under the cut.

More intersex headcanons
Some more intersex headcanons that came to mind after my last headcanon post! These are all headcanons of mine.
Min Farshaw from Wheel of Time as interneutrois (neutrois in a specifically intersex way)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill from Animorphs as interandrogyne (androgyne in a specifically intersex way)
Casey from Mr Dressup as intersexgender (and also pangender)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crowley from Good Omens as intersex and transmascfem.
LMK if you have any intersex headcanons you want flagified! I feel like intersex headcanons pretty much always get put on the intersex flag, and that flag makes me happy, but I also wanna show some love to intersex microlabels 💛💜💛
Edit to add: all of the pictures of characters are copyrighted. Feel free to use/share per fandom social norms, just know you can't upload it to Wikimedia Commons or the like.

Miscellaneous headcanons (some mine, some from others)
Deadpool from the MCU as varsex (since he has all the cancers). Photo credit. Inspired by this ask to @consciousexe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul Atreides from Dune as intersex and interexpressive-masculine (i.e. his masculine gender expression is connected to / reflective of being intersex). Photo credit. Submission by @goingrampant.
Brienne of Tarth from Games of Thrones as intersex and having interexpressive-neutral gender expression. Image source. Inspired by this post by @thehmn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chummy Browne from Call the Midwife as intersex and interexpressive-androgynous (while also being a woman). Inspired by the same post by @thehmn. Image source.
Bobbie Draper from The Expanse as intersex and interexpressive-feminine. Her femininity (especially in the books) is always described in reference to her large stature and musculature, but it's always understood as feminine. Very feminine in a specifically intersex way. Photo source. Inspired by this post by @intertrek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Camina Drummer from The Expanse as extersex, because what kind of beltalowda has access to medical testing? This one's from me, I headcanon most of the Belters in the TV show as hypogonadally intersex to explain why they're not as tall as they should be per the books 😂. And I think Drummer wouldn't be bothered to figure out if she is intersex or not.
Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars as intersex AFAB transfeminine with the intertransgender flag. Source image. Inspired by this poll by @aretheyqueer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiona from Shrek as PCOS-intersex (i.e. intersex on the basis of having PCOS hyperandrogenism). Suggested by @scifimagpie. Image source.
Harth Fray from the Buffy comics as XTM intersex, having access to feminine powers that are shared with his twin sister. Suggested by @goingrampant. Image source.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joan Lambert from Alien is XTF intersex! Photo from here. I've seen a bunch of people list Lambert as an intersex headcanon but I personally think the reveal she was medically assigned from male to female at birth is pretty canonically intersex. 🤷
Tedd Verres from El Goonish Shive is intersex and interfluid! Picture source. Submission by @goingrampant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azi Nareen from Scavenger's Reign is intersex and inter-agender/intergenderless. Picture from from here. Another headcanon of mine.
Note on copyright: all of these flags include copyrighted images. They are not public domain. Feel free to use/share within the norms of using material derived from popular media on social media.

An interandrogyne flag design
Following the trend of other intergender flags I and others have made by sticking intersex yellow on the borders :)
I switched the androgyne stripes to horizontal, because the vertical versions I tried didn't look as good. I rotated them to the left rather than the right so that they'd be in the opposite order of the bi flag (to try and reduce confusion). Sensory friendlier version on the left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This flag is public domain! 🎉
Nobody requested this one, I just wanted to to make it for my own benefit.
Best as I can tell the original coining was by @intersexfairy in 2021.

out of curiosity, what is all the symbolism in your icon? i can make out the intersex ring and autism infinity but the rest of it looks kinda cluttered to me — nice, but hard to make out everything.
Tumblr media
It's a symbol of vexillology! (Vexillology is the study of flags.)
The knot in it is called a double-sheet bend. It also appealed to me as somebody who has done a lot of rock climbing. :D

New interhormonal flag design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got a request for a new interhormonal / hormonally intersex flag that is more sensory-friendly than the original design by sproutflags.
Hormonally intersex (or interhormonal) is a term for intersex people whose intersex variation is characterized by what society perceives as a hormone "imbalance" - e.g. hyperandrogenism, hyperestrogenism, hypogonadism.
Sensory-friendly on the left. Version with original intersex flag colours on the right.
Hex codes I used in the sensory friendly version are: yellow: #f4db75 purple: #5f2a7e
The icon in the middle of the flag is a representation of the central common structure in sex hormones such as testosterone, estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone, etc.
These flags are released as public domain (CC0). 💜

Term proposal: gender sodality
As is, we have terms like:
Intergender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced by being intersex
Neurogender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced by being neurodivergent
Somatogender: when your gender is connected, linked or influenced by having a somatic disability
Indigender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced to being part of an Indigenous culture
These aren't gender modalities. While sometimes they get used as gender identities, they often aren't: they're descriptors of the influence(s) on one's gender identity.
I'd like to propose that we call them gender sodalities. 🎉
The word "sodality" is used in theology and anthropology as a contrast to "modality". It comes from Latin sodalis ("companion") and is used to refer to non-kin groups organized a shared purpose or affiliation. I like it here because these gender terms indicate that one's gender is in conjunction with being part of a community.
Right now these gender terms tend to get grouped under exclusive genders, and they are exclusive, but I want a way to talk about the the influence descriptors that doesn't apply to the exclusive gender identities and/or exclusive gender modalities.
I considered calling them "gender influences" but that word pair gets used a lot to refer to things like how one's gender influences what occupation you pursue and stuff. Also: "gender identity", "gender modality", and "gender quality" all end in -ity and so I wanted to keep the trend going. @GoingRampant helped brainstorm ideas for terms with me and helped pick "sodality" out of the options.
Gender sodalities can be combined: for example, one who feels like their gender is a function of being both intersex and autistic could then say their gender sodality is interautigender.
I'm also going to coin two non-exclusive gender sodality terms:
1. Coenogender for when one has a sense of gender that feels connected, linked, or influenced by being part of the common hegemonic zeitgeist of Global North / Western society. Coeno- is used in scientific terminology to denote something is common or general. Does *not* mean the individual approves of Global North binarism! One can be influenced by something and also feel like it is a negative/restrictive influence! (Coeno- is usually pronounced /si:no/ in English, like see-no. It comes from Greek, and in Greek it's pronounced closer to kee-no. I personally consider both correct.)
2. Eigengender for when one has a sense of gender that feels inherent to one's self and unrelated to their intersex status, disability status, culture, etc. So one is not intergender, not neurogender, not somatogender, not indigender, nor coenogender. Eigen- in reference to the prefix used math: an eigenvector is one which is unchanged under transformation. It comes from German, meaning "one's own", characteristic of a given individual. Pronounced /ˈaɪ̯ɡən/ (like eye-gun - sound recording here)
Note: I am intergender, and do not identify as eigengender, though I do feel at least partly coenogender. Eigengender is coined in response to an anonymous ask for a term more general than extergender (not-intergender). Coenogender is coined as an option for those who feel none of the above and/or the "default" sodality.
Note for Americans: the spelling of coeno- with the o is intentional. This is because a different scientific prefix, caeno- (new/recent) gets Americanized as ceno- (e.g. Cenozoic). The two prefixes have different etymologies. It's standard to spell coeno- with the o to avoid confusion, including in the US.

Even more autism pride flag options
After my latest autistic pride flag post, @pride-cat messaged me suggesting a mashup of the red-orange-yellow-lime-green (ROYLG) flag with the Autistic Pride Day logo. Here's what I came up with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top one uses the grey from the disability pride flag and the colours from the ROYLG flag. Bottom left uses a white background like the neurodiversity flag. Bottom right uses disability pride colours.
(At pride-cat's suggestion, I tried putting the APD logo on the ROYLG flag but felt like it blended into the background - you can see pride-cat's version here.)
@posting-stuffies tagged me about @ryanyflags's gold infinity icons, so here are two flags putting the gold infinity first on a plain white background then on the grey background:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While on the idea of "plain symbol for autism on a white background" I figured I'd make use of the aufinity symbol by @palpablenotion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then finally, this post by @spaghettimakesflags and this post by @themogaidragon inspired some more flag ideas that led to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are all free to use and remix! I hope this helps for moving people away from autistic flags that have Metis style infinity symbols in them (such as the original ROYLG design). 🧡
Code used to generate flag combinations is on github. SVGs here.
In the near future I'm thinking of putting out a survey of autistic flag options. I'm assembling a list of options here, so if you know of any autistic flag designs that don't use a solid white infinity that aren't in the document please let me know! 🧡

Since International Men's Day is approaching on November 19th, I'd love to see a Mars symbol intersex flag!
I'm so sorry I wasn't able to get to this in time for International Men's Day! I have had a lot going on mentally these past few months. 😧 Here's what I've got for you:

Poll, Round THREE: what model of disability would you associate with the colour green?
So back in September I put out a poll asking folks what model of disability people think is the best fit for the green stripe in the disability pride flag. (Yellow is affirmation model, blue is social model, red is debility/intersectional, white is other models.)
Tumblr media
The results of the September poll were a very narrow win for the eco-crip model over the human rights model. But it was such a narrow lead that it doesn't really feel conclusive. 🫤
After the poll went out, @capricorn-0mnikorn made a solid suggestion for an alternative: the political minority model. She writes: "I think I prefer the Political Model to the Human Rights model because the latter is narrowly focused on governmental action: the passing of laws from the top down.* The Political Minority Model has that, but it also includes on our collective action to change society for the better from the bottom up and inside out."
Recently I got an anonymous ask suggesting that green could be the stripe for "other models" and to reconsider what white would mean. Anon wrote: "Honestly I associate green with neutrality more than any specific model. I'd use green for 'other', and white for something specific or even just all models combined."
In response to anon and to capricorn-0mnicorn's comments in the September thread, I'm gonna put fourth option on the table: green could be for "combining different models together" and white remains as "other models".
So, since there wasn't a strong mandate for the eco-crip model and other options have been suggested... Another poll!
Tagging for reach: @disabilityflagsarchive @disabilitypride @mad-pride - and @queercripintersex (who suggested the eco-crip model)
