Introduction
I was really happy that you liked my post about Li Mei and the injustice she suffered (judging by the number of notes and reblogs), that I decided to make another post analyzing characters from Mortal Kombat 1.
REMEMBER! This is just my opinion about the characters, I personally like both of them, I'm just here to analyze the characters' behavior and their story, not to judge them, I'm open to opposing opinions as long as they're respectful.
Family dynamics
Sometimes I wish Netherealm Studios would pay more attention to Mortal Kombat's lore, because I think it's quite rich and diverse for a fighting game (considering that I'm also a fan of Street Fighter and Tekken and the stories of both are quite simple). Maybe if they had time to publish short stories and even books related to the story, it would be great, so that people don't just remember the game when a new one comes out. I would love to know about the Great Kung Lao's victories. And I'm saying this because the dynamics of the royal family are pretty much information that the characters' biographies and intros give away, which doesn't help much since it's limited content, but based on what we have, I'll try to guess what their lives were like before Jerrod died.
We know that Sindel married Jerrod to prevent a rebellion from happening, let's assume that Sindel ascended to the throne very young shortly after the death of her father or mother, who was probably the emperor or empress of Outworld, an intro with Kenshi mentions that she has a twin sister and that this twin sister probably had children (the cousins banished from court that Kitana mentions), so everything suggests that like Mileena, she was the eldest twin and heir to the throne.
The marriage was initially only to avoid civil war, but they eventually found love and had twin daughters. The game suggests that Jerrod was more than a consort; he helped Sindel rule and perhaps handled affairs of state, while also being a loving father and husband, but everything fell apart after his death, leaving Sindel to rule alone, leaving her vulnerable to attacks from political enemies.
Kitana and Mileena, by all accounts, had a peaceful childhood, being trained by Li Mei and loved by their parents. They undoubtedly suffered with Jerrod's death, just like Sindel. In short: They were a happy family, but it all ended with Jerrod's murder.
Mileena and the Tarkat
We don't know how Mileena caught Tarkat, but according to the YouTube comments (which I don't consider a reliable source but is the most likely), she probably left the palace at night in secret to meet Tanya and was attacked by a Tarkatan or a person infected with the disease (which could mean her scar on her eyebrow). I remember seeing on Baraka's Wiki a while back that one of the causes of Tarkat could be stress, which could be the explanation for Mileena's contamination, we know that she is temperamental, and that dealing with her father's death must have been quite stressful for her, but again, the game's lore explains little, so the way is to create our own theories.
The contempt for people with the disease reminds me of how people treated people with AIDS in the 1980s. It was a little-known disease and treatment was limited. People always fear what they don't know, and they even thought that simply shaking hands with a person with AIDS could pass it on to them, and the fact that the majority of those infected were gay men, didn't help much in the fight against prejudice and ignorance against the disease.
If you have been infected by tarkat, you will likely be kicked out of your home and sent to a colony of infected people until you go mad and die in pain and agony (according to Baraka's intros). But we know that suffering this terrible fate is for commoners, if you are an aristocrat like Mileena, you will probably have the privilege of receiving treatment that will assess the symptoms.
One thing the game makes very clear is that this could destroy Mileena's image as a future empress and even the entire monarchy, being a secret as well kept as her love affair with an Umgadi (to be honest, I don't know which would cause more scandal).
Sindel's ignorance and a mother's despair
Sindel blames Mileena for her illness, which is weird, because she's practically telling her daughter that it's her fault if she eventually dies from Tarkat, it's like telling someone with cancer that if they have cancer it's their fault. I try to put myself in Sindel's shoes (or in this case, her high heels), she's angry and sad because she lost her husband and now has to deal with yet another problem because her daughter was careless, but the approach to this could be more caring, after all, it's normal to expect understanding from a mother.
Perhaps because she blamed Mileena so much, she began to have more affection and pride for another daughter who is completely healthy, Kitana. We don't know if Sindel's favoritism arose after Mileena's infection or if it already existed since Jerrod was alive, I like to think that it already existed but increased with Mileena's situation.
But don't think that Sindel is sitting on her golden throne waiting for Mileena to die to finally name Kitana her heir, she is still a mother who loves her daughters, and for that, she had to resort to secretly handing her daughter over to be cared for by a sorcerer who until a few years ago was nothing more than a liar who stole money from naive people with promises of cures with his medicines, in addition to listening to advice from another sorcerer who makes demons his personal slaves, all to cure his beloved daughter.
Before being an empress, she is a mother.
Real-life example of a deadly disease in royalty
I don't work in the Netherealm writers' room, so I don't know if they had any inspiration for their portrayal of Tarkat in the game... But I'd like to draw a comparison with a disease that affected many royal families between the 1870s and 1930s.
Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which the blood doesn't clot in the typical way because it doesn't have enough blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors). If you have hemophilia, you might bleed for a longer time after an injury than you would if your blood clotted properly.
I imagine most of you know who Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was, as she literally has a period in history named after her. She suffered from hemophilia and passed it on to her youngest son, Prince Leopold. She had five daughters as well, two of whom did not have the disease but carried the hemophilia genes which unfortunately passed on to their children and grandchildren.
Treatment at the time was precarious and could sometimes make the disease worse rather than do any good. One of the greatest examples of hemophilia in a royal family was the case of Prince Alexei of Russia, son of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.
Tumblr media
(Alexei and his mother, Empress Alexandra of Russia)
If you don't know the history of the Romanovs, I'll give you a brief summary: Empress Alexandra of Russia was one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters, the daughter of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, one of her two daughters who carried the genes for the disease. She did not have the disease but also carried the genes, eventually passing it on to her son, Prince Alexei.
Alexei suffered from hemophilia type B, a more serious and lethal type of the disease. Most doctors were sure that he would not live to adulthood, since most of his cousins, who also had the disease, died from it at a relatively young age, including an uncle who died at the age of three. The empress was desperate to cure her son, turning to the mystic Grigori Rasputin, a Siberian monk who claimed to have healing powers.
Rasputin exerted a great influence on the Empress and the Emperor, as he was supposedly the only one who could cure their son, he also involved himself in the politics of the state through his influence with the Empress (which was so big that both the Russian nobility and the people believed they were lovers).
Rasputin was actually a fraud, as he never cured the prince, he only prevented the use of aspirin on the boy, which was the treatment for hemophilia at the time and only made the bleeding worse. He was eventually assassinated by the husband of the emperor's niece, as it was almost a consensus in Russia that he was ruining the image of the imperial family. The imperial family itself would be assassinated in 1918, including Alexei and his mother.
Some parallels between Alexandra and Sindel
EMPRESSES: both were empresses, although Alexandra was only a consort.
DESPERATE MOTHERS: Both were desperate to cure their children of the disease that was affecting them.
TRUSTING A FRAUD: Shang Tsung claims that he could only control the symptoms with his serums, but he did not find a cure for the disease, Rasputin only prohibited the use of a medicine that could only make things worse for Alexei.
MANIPULATED: Shang Tsung and Quan Chi had influence over the Empress, as one could control her daughter's symptoms and the other could predict the future. Rasputin also claimed to be able to see the future and tell which government ministers would eventually betray the imperial family, causing the Empress to dismiss them all when she became regent during World War I.
HIGH PRICE TO PAY: Sindel's over-trust of sorcerers led to her eventual death, just like Alexandra trust in Rasputin was one of the factors that condemned the Russian imperial family to death.
Mileena VS Kitana: Same faces, different behaviors
Some in Outworld think that Mileena is too rebellious and that her beautiful and graceful sister Kitana would make a better empress, even Sindel thinks so! Although Kitana has no interest in usurping her sister, Mileena does not feel safe even as her mother's heir.
I can draw a parallel with two real-life princesses, Queen Elizabeth II and her younger sister, Princess Margaret (yes, I'm referencing the British royal family again). Elizabeth was known for being obedient and peaceful, in contrast to her younger sister who was rebellious and bold. People liked Elizabeth, but found Margaret spoiled and arrogant.
Mileena in the future may become paranoid that Kitana is trying to steal her throne (perhaps one of the symptoms of tarkat includes mental confusion), and may even have her own sister arrested on suspicion of high treason. But only the future will tell.
Finalization
I literally spent two hours writing all of this 😭 Again, thank you to everyone who reblogged my post about Li Mei, you have no idea how much this motivates me to write more analyzes.

Introduction
I never thought I would criticize Outworld's social system, but watching Li Mei's intros I realize how hypocritical and blind people like Sindel, Mileena and Tanya are towards Li Mei, one of the most loyal characters in the entire game.
Here in Brazil, we have the saying that "the one who throws the punch forgets, but not the one who takes it". I believe that this saying also existed in other countries, but here we use it mainly to say that it is easy to forget something bad that you did, but the person who suffered that bad thing, not, and that is exactly the case with Li Mei.
The Story of Li Mei
As her parents’ firstborn daughter, Li Mei was claimed by the Umgadi, the warrior priestesses who guard Outworld’s royal family. Li Mei’s service began with high expectations. Her early success caught the eye of the Royal family. But it all fell apart when a terrible tragedy unfolded. Li Mei was blamed for this and in the aftermath, she did the unthinkable: she quit the Umgadi. Friendless and alone, Li Mei needed a new purpose. She joined Sun Do’s constables, the Outworld capital’s rough and tumble police force. Over time, she became their First Constable. Li Mei is glad to be the capital guardian. Still, she hopes one day to redeem herself.
First we have to talk about how the Umgadi are formed. The intros and biographies imply that the firstborn females of all Outworld are chosen to protect the royal family and they serve until their deaths (or until they get too old to protect anyone). I know we shouldn't associate everything with slavery, since it existed and was cruel, but I can't find another name for when a person is taken from the arms of their parents and their homeland to serve an order that will give them nothing in return except to die for its name.
In an intro with Liu Kang, Li Mei expresses her desire to meet her parents, as she must have been too young to remember them. The Umgadi dynamic reminds me of the Black Widows from Marvel Comics: little girls taken from their families and trained to be servants. I hardly see the choice of firstborns as something spontaneous in Outworld families, tell me, what mother who loves her daughter tirelessly would give up her daughter to be a royal protector and never see her again? These families probably had no choice since it was a royal decree, making the beginning of Li Mei's story tragic, as she was forcibly orphaned.
Moving on, she fell into the good graces of the royal family for her excellent work in protecting them, she even trained Kitana and Mileena in their childhood, probably being a second mother figure, but it all ended when Jerrod died, with no one hesitating to blame her for the emperor's death, having no choice but to become a police officer to escape the shame of failing in her only objective in that palace.
Power dynamics in Outworld
I imagine that Outworld is an absolute monarchy, since there is no evidence that there is a parliament or any council that helps in the empire's decisions, which makes things worse, because in absolute monarchies, power is very centralized in a single person, and we have already had examples in real life of what happens when power falls into the hands of an unprepared and bad monarch (the French and Russian Revolutions, for example). But MK1 wants us to believe that in millennia of monarchy, no democratic revolt has ever occurred in Outworld (probably Liu Kang made democracy and liberalism things of Earthrealm 🤣).
One thing the game makes very clear in its intros is that the archdukes of Outworld are all lying and manipulative snakes, with some even planning to betray Sindel and probably ally themselves with Shao. Symbolizing that most of the richest people in the empire are nothing more than privileged traitors, something that also reminds me of the French and Russian revolutions, where the people (Tarkatans) suffered and the nobles drank and ate in their luxurious palaces without worrying about nothing in their lives.
In conclusion: The empress rules everything, if she wants to declare war on a rival nation, there is nothing anyone can do, because the word of an absolute monarch is law. The nobles are not loyal to the crown despite their positions and titles depending on it. People like Li Mei's parents are only there to obey the system and deliver their daughters to the Palace without question, because again, the empress's word is law.
The Gift of Shame: When You're No Longer Useful to the Powerful
Li Mei was taken from her family and even trained the princesses, and what does she get in return when Jerrod dies? Leaving Umgadi in disgrace and being publicly reprimanded by Mileena and Sindel, yes, I understand that they both loved Jerrod and miss him, but we know that Jerrod was murdered, and that the only thing Li Mei did was be careless (which is later even revealed to be partially a lie, since the supreme matrons used her to hide their own faults). Sometimes it even seems like it was Li Mei herself who killed the emperor!
I don't know the laws of the empire, but I don't doubt that the punishment for Umgadi who break the rules is execution, one could say that Li Mei was lucky to choose to just leave the order before Sindel decided to behead or hang her (which I totally see her doing, since she was an angry widow).
It is also said that the people of Outworld dislikes her for the Emperor's death, which makes it quite clear that ingratitude is not exclusive to the royal family. She has served that family for millennia, always obeying and following the rules, but the moment she makes a mistake, bye bye dear, you become useless to the powerful.
Loyal to the End
Despite being treated like a criminal, Li Mei remained loyal and even mentions that if she had remained a Umgadi, Shang Tsung wouldn't even breathe the same air as Sindel, which makes me draw a parallel with another character from another media.
Tumblr media
For those of you who have never heard of Game of Thrones or The Song of Ice and Fire, Barristan Selmy was a protector of the royal family of the Seven Kingdoms who fought countless battles in the name of the crown and was anointed as one of the best knights in the realm. When King Joffrey I dismissed him, saying that he was too old to protect anyone and that he had eventually let his father, King Robert, die. Barristan, no longer useful to the family that ruled the kingdom, went to the other continent and swore loyalty to one of the main claimants to the throne, switching his support. This could easily be the story of Li Mei, so furious at being discarded like a piece of paper that she switched sides, but no, she remains loyal to that family that hates her until the end.
The Philosophy of Forgiving and Forgetting
Li Mei is unfortunately so loyal to the royal family that she doesn't notice their hypocrisy. When it is revealed that Shao, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung were making a fool of Sindel and manipulating her to start a war with Earthrealm (in addition to the matrons' revelations at the end of Tanya), Li Mei is magically forgiven and even Mileena wants her to return to the Umgadi, as if she hadn't said in chapter 3 that expecting something competent from her was too much. Tanya says in Li Mei's chapter that she was incapable of protecting the royal family, but in the intros, she seems to admire her years as Umgadi. When Li Mei defeats Mileena, Sindel says that she is in debt to Li Mei.
Tumblr media
Bitches, are you serious?!
Where were you guys being friendly with her when she was seeking forgiveness?! Oh yeah, you were calling her incompetent and that she didn't deserve a place in the tournament if it weren't for Jerrod's tradition. Mileena and Sindel can use the excuse that they didn't know the matrons were using her as a scapegoat, but for Delia and Argus' sake, no person deserves to be treated like she was after centuries of service. You should be thankful that she's still loyal to you.
"Oh Li Mei, forget that I blamed you for my father's death, return to the order that left you an orphan and serve me again!" — Mileena probably.
I believe that Mileena and Sindel have spent so much time in a capsule of privilege and trapped in the idea of being protect, that they have no idea how much being publicly humiliated hurts.
Even if Li Mei were instructed back to Umgadi, it's unlikely she would be the leader again, since Tanya's ending implies that she is the new leader of the order (the same case as Sektor here, it's easy for you to be second in command of something when you're the same person who's sharing your superior's bed, sorry girls).
Li Mei is the greatest example in video games (at least for me) that ingratitude always wins in the end.
Finalization
I confess that I was a little angry when I wrote all this, and perhaps most of you will disagree with me, or they didn't even understand what I meant, if that is the case, I would like to know because I always like to hear other opinions about my analyzes ☺️

Mortal Kombat and the missed opportunity for more LGBTQ+ representation
Special thanks to @bump-inthe-night for inspiring me to make this blog based on a blog she made about NRS Studios being afraid of LGBTQ+ representation (to be honest, I don't even remember which blog it was 🤣 but I'll give credit for my inspiration anyway).
Tumblr media
One of the things I liked about MKX was that Kung Jin was gay, but that wasn't entirely all he was, of course, he was an arrogant jerk, but if you were a kid or teenager in the late 2000s and early 2010s (like me) and watched a lot of TV shows, you might remember that when a character was rarely LGBT, he was rarely more than that. For example Santana Lopez on Glee, I know her coming out arc was important and the whole Brittany thing but Ryan Murphy made a point of telling us to our faces everytime that she was a lesbian, and the fact that he always gave the most important storylines to Rachel and didn't develop the other characters, doesn't help.
What I'm trying to say is that since then many characters (especially female characters) have been written solely for the purpose of taking money from minorities, of course this isn't always the case, but take Disney for example, they spent decades putting black people in racist stereotypes in their cartoons and now they want to convince us that they care about non-Caucasian people by putting Ariel to be played by a black woman. I rarely meet a minority character whose personality isn't entirely that of that minority, and I'm glad that NRS Studios gave Kung Jin more personality than just "he's gay bruh".
But what's the point of impressing everyone ten years ago by making one of the most famous fighting games in history finally have gay representation if the character in question doesn't even appear in the next games? He's mentioned a few times in MK11 and MK1 but that's it, and considering that the franchise has over 50 characters, some of them more popular and requested, I think it's unlikely he'll return in a future game.
Tumblr media
But all is not lost, as we still have Mileena and Tanya.
Okay, I strongly believe that in MKX Tanya was only with Mileena for her own gain while what Mileena felt was genuine (after all, we have her intros in MK11), but even if their relationship was "sex for power purposes" it was still a sort of LGBT representation. In MK11 it is revealed that Kotal killed Tanya and Mileena wants revenge, and in the tower ending of Mileena, Tanya is restored and forms a family with Mileena.
To be honest, unlike Kung Jin, I have nothing to complain about the two of them, except that the hetero relationships in MK1 like Ashrah x Reptile and Bi-Han x Sektor receive more attention than them, which unlike them is already an established relationship from two games ago (but we know that NRS loves to please incels and regions where being gay is literally a crime, so I didn't expect anything less than that).
The fact that Tanya has more scenes with Rain in Khaos Reigns than with Mileena in the story mode doesn't help much, I saw a lot of people saying that NRS turned her straight, but for the love of god, you should already know at this point that she's CANONICAL bisexual, but it wouldn't be the first time I've had someone doubt a bi woman's sexuality if she starts dating a man.
We know that, as I mentioned, not all countries in the world are progressive when it comes to LGBT people, so obviously the studio will censor some things. To be honest, I don't even judge NRS for that because it's not their fault.
What could be done to change the scenario
Add more representation to my point of view.
The heterosexual intros in MK11 are pretty weird, we have Sindel and Shao Kahn wanting to have sex with Jax and Cassie, we have Skarlet with Erron Black and she wanting to marry her own adoptive father (🤮), Kotal and Jade coming from I don't know where and the only normal ones of all these couples: Sonya x Johnny and Liu Kang x Kitana.
Many have theorized that MK11 Kuai Liang was asexual, and it would have been nice if they had implied that he actually was (he may still be in this new timeline, him being attracted to Harumi has nothing to do with asexuality, romantic attraction is different from sexual attraction). Geras is also strongly implied to be asexual, but again, there is no dialogue that suggests this. I don't know if my next representation candidate is a serious consideration, but I would put Ermac on this list, he's literally a body with thousands of souls inside, can't he be genderfluid? Johnny even asks if he uses neutral pronouns.
In MK11, Jacqui could be bi or pan, that would definitely make her character more interesting, or even Cassie could be a lesbian, these are small details, but very important for all the LGBT fellas who play the game.
But I'll go further, and suggest a relationship between Jade x Kitana, they grew up together in the first and second timeline, that would be a good addition, and as for MK1, if KP3 isn't officially canceled, they can develop a relationship, they don't even need labels, because sapphics without labels exist and are valid.
We know that NRS Studios is cowardly enough to only have Mileena x Tanya in their representation box, but as we say in my country, poor is the one who can't dream big.

𝗠𝘆 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 (𝗠𝗞𝟭 𝗔𝗨) 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁. 𝟭 - 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀
Explanation: I intend to make a series reforming all of Outworld (or a good part of it) for my MK1 AU and future fanfics and oneshots, and I will start with the nobility ranks in the Outworld empire.
1. Emperor/Empress
Just like in real life, the emperor or empress is above all titles of nobility, including king and queen, since an empire is a territory of dominion larger than a kingdom. Thus, Sindel (and now Mileena) are the highest-titled aristocrats in Outworld.
Real life example: The emperors of Germany and Austria in terms of hierarchy were above the kings of United Kingdom and Spain, even though their territories were smaller than those of the British and Spanish (considering the colonies).
2. King/Queen
Right after the emperors and empresses come the kings and queens. They rule a certain territory and exercise power over it just as emperors and empresses rule an empire. The king of the Shokan, Gobark, is only below Sindel and Mileena.
Real life example: Monarchies of the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands, which have kings.
3. Imperial princes/princesses
As children of an emperor or empress, they are only below kings and queens because unlike them, they do not rule any territory, being only the heirs of the monarch of the empire, sometimes, the bearers of this title can be below the reigning princes, such as the principality of Monaco in real life, because, again, they do not rule any domain.
Real life example: The daughters of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia were imperial princesses, which would have made them superior in hierarchy to the rest of the princesses in Europe, unless these princesses were also daughters of an emperor. That's why the British called them "grand duchesses", so as not to make it seem like the Russians were superior to them in the european royalty.
4. Royal princes/princesses.
Okay, MK1 caused some confusion here, because they constantly refer to Mileena and Kitana as "royal princesses" even though they are imperial princesses, but in my AU, Goro, for example, is below Mileena and Kitana, because, again, emperors are above kings.
Real life example: The princes and princesses of the United Kingdom.
5. Archduke/Archduchesses
In the Austrian Empire, archdukes were above royal princes, but I very much doubt that in Outworld archdukes are above Sindel's daughters in terms of hierarchy.
Real life example: The Archdukes of Austria.
The rest of the noble titles are pretty much the same as the real life.
6. Dukes/Duchesses
7. Marquises
8. Count/Countesses
9. Viscount/Viscountesses
10. Barons/Baronesses
11. Lords/Ladies
In conclusion...
Tumblr media
1. Emperor/Empress
2. King/Queen
3. Imperial princes/princesses
4. Royal princes/princesses
5. Archdukes/Archduchesses
6. Dukes/duchesses
7. Marquises
8. Count/Countesses
9. Viscount/Viscountesses
10. Barons/Baronesses
11. Lords/Ladies

— They are both princesses
— Both are heirs
— Both have strong personalities
— They both have lovers (Tanya and ser Harwin Strong)
— Both are reprimanded by their mother and father (Sindel and Viserys) for their rebellious characters.
— Both hate the idea of getting married and having children (Rhaenyra hated it in her youth but had no choice in the future, Mileena says she has no interest in procreating in a dialogue with Omni-man)
— Many of the nobles in their court and the common people think that their younger siblings (Kitana and Aegon) would make a better monarch than them.
— Mileena wanted to execute Bi-Han and Sektor on a whim, Rhaenyra is described in the book as having little mercy for her enemies.
CONCLUSION: Same characters, different media.

I know it's kinda random, but sometimes I wonder if Mileena and Tanya's relationship is just romantic or sexual. I mean, the looks they exchanged at the festival are suggestive, and Tanya's biography says that by being with Mileena she is breaking her vows of chastity (chastity means a life without sex and intimacy, while celibacy is a life without romance and marriage, at least in my country).
To be honest, as the good sapphic that I am, I can totally imagine them being scissoring partners 🤣🤣

It's a good time to state that if you support a certain american orange man it's the best time to unfollow me, I will never criticize someone for their political ideology, I know I'm not american, but the moment you support a fascist, I don't want you reading and interacting with my posts.
