Boygenius concert interactions I want to remember (Toronto 6/21)

Lucy and Phoebe coming out wearing sunglasses and Lucy saying she looks super cool *cheers* and is also concussed *awws* and that the doctor said she could play but needed to chill.

We swayed our hands during True Blue and Phoebe was like “did anyone think that was kind of creepy, it’s usually more chill but you guys were like *moves arm very fast back and forth* and they joked about the high bpm of the song.

Someone passed around strips of paper for us to put in front of our phone lights during Cool About It to make a rainbow across the audience. They started playing, noticed it, stopped and admired it and were like “someone take a picture” and then Lucy said she didn’t get it but was still happy.

Someone had a sign that read “sad Canadian queers for Boygenius” (or was it queer Canadians) and Julien read it out loud and everyone laughed.

Lucy (and Julien and Phoebe) said that they loved Broken Social Scene. Lucy said that her first love who took her to a Broken Social Scene concert on “September 11, 2010” was in the audience tonight. She went on to say that they were the reason she wanted to do music and now she is :’).

Julien shouted out the 2SLBGTQ+ org and said that the Indigenous people who did the land acknowledgement for them were really cool and did great work :). June 21 is Indigenous People’s Day in Canada so that was nice.

Phoebe asked if anyone was at the show at The Drake a few years ago where she opened for Julien. Then she told a story about how she had like strep throat or whatever during the show and sounded awful but still went out and everyone was nice about it but she “missed all the notes”. Then when she was crying backstage Julien (who she didn’t know that well back then) was there to comfort her. And she said it was nice to be back where that moment happened 🥺.

Phoebe asked us to put away our phones during Letter to an Old Poet. She also (pretty sure during this song) went out into the barrier against the pit and held hands and hugged with fans. The mic caught one of the fans’ squeals and everyone laughed at that.

Before they sang Salt in the Wound, Lucy noted that it felt weird to sing that song sitting down.

Both Phoebe and Julien sat on Lucy’s lap during Salt in the Wound and performed acts of intimacy that changed my life. (Oh and Phoebe kissing the crown of Lucy’s head, as if to heal her concussion)

I used to think my bisexuality/pansexuality sat on a spectrum where I was closer to the ‘liking men’ side, but I am coming to realize that was my own internalized homophobia that was impacting my own label for myself. Men are gross. Like, yeah, I am still bi/pan, but GIRLS. fuck man.

Realizations pt 17

SPOILERS AHEAD for Young Royals Season 1

-this was a really cute and easy show to binge in isolation

-I rotated between the English dubs and subs and I think I liked subs better, I prefer to hear their actual voices

-Simon is actually a very cute character: he's sure of himself, he's out, he knows what he wants and is quite mature about a lot of things

-but he sucks at peer pressure if it gets him closer to Wilhelm

-Sara is also a great character and I liked the friendship arc she had with Felice (it felt natural and real) but I thought her deal at the end was very out of character for her. she may want normalcy in the way rich folks do, but I doubt she would do it at the expense of her brother’s privacy 

-Wilhelm is quite adorable. I like that the entire show wasn’t based around his understanding of his sexuality (there was minimal “I don't know if I’m gay” parts and I liked that as its quite often a gay crutch for gay tropes)

-I also liked the makeup and wardrobe for making it feel like real teens who have acne and sweatpants and mess up their hair. it felt a lot more real than some other shows airing right now

-fuck August, honestly. Ie is a brat and a bitch and has no moral backbone. I get he's having a tough time and he doesn't want to show it, but your reputation can be brought down a notch and then maybe you can confide in your friends rather than publicly blackmail and shame them for their sexuality in retaliation to a fight. come on man, grow up.

-I saw the Erik storyline coming from a MILE away, but I knew it was the only way to put pressure on Wilhelm in an honest way that would encounter issue with his sexuality, so I’ll let it slide

-Felice is an ok character. Somewhat bland at parts, but she seems like a real person and she makes very in-character decisions throughout

-overall, I am excited for season 2 and I cannot wait for their issues to be solved (unless Netflix pulls a season 2 love triangle character entrance like they always do, then I will boycott)

I am studying abroad and it’s so complex when you are the ‘put together’ one but also the ‘stick in the mud’ one when it comes to relationships. I want to spontaneously go out and get drunk and find some random person to kiss. I want to be that obnoxious couple in the pub making out on the dance floor. I also want to giggle and dance with my partner and have fun. But at the same time I want to find someone who cares about me; someone I can talk to, go on real dates with, and actually have a relationship with. But then can I do that while knowing it may have to end in T minus 5 months? Love is hard and I just wish it was easier and I wasn't such an over thinker about it.

Realizations pt. 16

*MAID SPOILERS AHEAD

tw: mentions of abuse, addictions, unspecified mental health disorders (implied mania or bipolar disorder)

-overall, this is a brilliant series and I urge everyone who reads this to watch it now

-the attention it brings to broken systems in childcare, work laws, abuse shelters, courtrooms, and so many other issues is amazing and enlightening for individuals who may not have to encounter that on a daily basis

-the reality that some people are living pay check to pay check (with not enough pay on that check) and having to fight for custody, recognition as a victim of abuse, and for work itself is appalling

-the importance of recognizing and validating the experiences of those who experience emotional abuse was very important

-I liked how Regina became such an important figure in her life after slapping her in the face with her reality. It was nice to see her open up to the realities and lives of others and knowledge her own struggles too

-It was hard to see Alex and so many other characters go back to their abusers throughout. As someone not in an abusive or toxic relationship with an individual or anything of any sort (addictions etc.), it is hard to see how one can leave and then go back after fighting so hard to get out or get clean, but once you experience it alongside some of those characters, you see why it happens and how appealing it can be despite knowing the probable outcome. Or simply how those people or things can manipulate the situation to make it look like you’re not going back, just resting your fight for a while; making it look appealing to you.

-her issues with her relationship with her mom was hard to watch as you wanted her so badly to just clear her head and recognize she needed help or needed to help others, but she would always fall back into a manic state of living and an unreliable schedule. I wanted Alex to leave her mom at some points, but it is so hard to leave someone you love so much. At the end I loved how she sharpened up and was going to go with Alex, but when she turned back to her lover and art and left Alex hanging again, I knew it would simply wave back and forth like that forever so it was better she went alone

-I liked how each episode was filmed and approached. the writing of her stories and the therapy sessions and the artistic approach to the series was intelligently done

-Margaret Qualley is AMAZING and I loved the way she took on the part. she did it so well. it is also amazing how she is the actual daughter of Andie MacDowell and how their relationship as mother and daughter must have been impacted and shifted during those scenes together

-Nick Robinson was amazing as well, especially after seeing him in younger roles for so long

-my heart is so full for Rylea and the relationship she has with Margaret now that she has spent so much time with her as her on-screen daughter. she was brilliant.

-10/10 show, really important, highly recommend.

I will never be able to fully express how being a lesbian is not considered cool and sexy to average people, who aren't terminally online. It considered especially disgusting to people when you're a woman who doesn't look like a super model or actress. People are shocked and appalled at the thought you want to eat the pussy of an ordinary girl whose like a waitress or something. People are grossed out that two women who might be fat, masc with stretch marks/scars or without makeup etc find each other completely attractive and have completely fulfilling sex for themselves. Lesbianism that is devoid of the male gaze repulses people. It's why lesbians are rarely fully represented in media. It's not sexy anymore if it's not two straight thin decorated actresses directed by a man. They so mad when we want each other and don't care to meet their beauty standards or need their approval.
