On dumpling row, ROC is the way to go. Tonight’s takeout: Pan-fried pouches stuffed with spinach and veggies. No filler, noodles or mystery “veggie meat.” The monster order included 8 oversized bundles, slightly browned around the edges, with hot sauce to kick it up a notch. ROC is now my go-to for a late-night dumpling fix. The menu features some of the most popular Chinese dishes— no filler here either! At 9 pm on a cold weekday night, the Beverly Grove location was packed with diners slurping everything from fried rice to pork soup dumplings. The staff is super friendly, too. William at the register is now my BFF. He comped my order tonight because I waited too long last time. (Swipe👈for @Bergerbites’ First Look @ln2pizzashoppe ) “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amore!” Like the Dean Martin song, it was love at first bite after an eclipse-night dinner at Chris Robbins and Mica Ray’s new Melrose pizza restaurant. Just as the moon turned from white to red, a piping hot Margherita pizza landed at our table, oozing with juicy ripe tomatoes and generous dollop of flor di latte (a cow’s milk mozzarella-style cheese). It had the perfect dough-to-cheese/sauce ratio—not too much puffery around the edges—with a thin, easy-to-fold crust. I rarely hand out compliments about LA pizzas, but LN2’s pies (and other dishes) are the exception. Chef Robbins, formerly of Patina and Parkway Grill, has crafted a small but creative menu that also includes such dishes as short ribs, buffalo duck wings, popcorn brussels and liquid nitrogen ice cream. For starters, meatballs on a bed of cheesy polenta, are a standout and not to be missed. The real star? The grey brick Neapolitan oven, front-and-center in the dining/bar area. On warmer nights, request a table on the enclosed patio with retractable roof and heat lamps. So grateful for 30 minutes with James Beard-nominated chef #EvanFunke at #PSIFF. We chatted about the traumatic closing of his restaurant #Bucato, the rocky launch of #Felix in Venice, CA, and his starring role in a new documentary about becoming the best pastamaker in the US. Funke is a big man with a big heart. You can taste the love in his pasta. Scenes of him lovingly rolling out sheets with Bologna’s pasta “maestra” Alessandra Spisni were like moving meditations. Interviewing #ChefFlynn and director #CameronYates at #PSIFF was as heartwarming and inspiring as the chef’s eponymous movie. Flynn is funny, passionate and wise beyond his years. And then there’s the hair, which deserves its own documentary! The feel-good film, which was 6 years in the making, chronicles Flynn’s childhood journey to becoming a gourmet chef in NYC - a dream he achieved before age 19! I had the great opportunity to interview Chef Tyler Florence at the Palm Springs Film Festival this week. His new (and first!) documentary Uncrushable is a graphic portrayal of the 2017 Napa/Sonoma wildfires and stark reminder that global warming is coming to a neighborhood near you. What really impressed me was Chef’s impassioned call-to-action - to Californians and society on general - to prepare for disasters of this magnitude and start having conversations in our communities about climate change. He’s also a really nice person! On a lighter note, what will we be eating in 2019? Korean and Filipino food, Florence predicts.
