Criticism is needed for growth. Intellectual hate is needed for growth. Dark academia is not an aesthetic. It is about being critical about what you read and do and striving for knowledge. No, it is not sitting in your room reading Kafka, Dostoevsky or Sylvia Plath and be like, "I am just a girl." It is about actually understanding what the book is about. I have not even bought any of these book because no where in the popular media where these books are romanticised, seem to make it clear what the books are about. I DON'T WANT TO KNOW THAT FRAZ KAFKA IS JUST A GIRL!

My Problem with Booktok

I am not hearing anyone out here. I am here to say my point: social media has made us dumber. Let me tell you, I am not a fan of booktok but I have enjoyed some of the books that had been recommended to me. I feel that platforms like TikTok have helped the literary community grow. But I also feel that half of the time, I am just reading Wattpad.

One thing I have noticed in most of these booktok books is that it has catered to that part of the community which wasn't really into reading. The writing is very simple and story line seems repetitive. Now, I am not saying that I do complicated reading. No. But somehow, as a former avid reader, I do not experience any kind of growth while reading most stuff from booktok, especially from the romance genre.

Anyway, I was just here to rant. If your counter-argument is, "But everyone is enjoying." Then no. This argument is incomplete.
