إن الصالحين بشكل مجرّد مصيرهم محتوم، أدوات في أيدي من نبذ النبل والشرف حين يقتضي الأمر، أدوات من كان نبيلًا ساميًّا في دهائه، عالمًا بإن الغاية لا تبرر الوسيلة، بل تبرر كل شيء، الغاية نفسها قد تكون وسيلة لما هو أدهى. إن الصالحين على مر العصور نجحوا في أمر واحد فحسب، أن يكونوا مثالًا كيف يمكن للصلاح المحض المجرّد أن ينقلب شرًّا مثيرًا للشفقة، فما الأدهى من صالح عاجز؟ أولئك المهجّنون، الذين يجعلون أحدنا يقف حائرًا بين صلاحه وشره، بين تقواه ودهائه، بين نوره وظلامه، أولئك الجشعون الذين يفتنك جشعهم؛ لكنك تعجز عن تحديد إذا ما كانوا سيئين أم جيّدين، أشعر بالانتماء لهم، ويهرع الآخرون هربًا منّا، لا يبتعدون كثيرًا فهم في نهاية المطاف سطر في قصة نرويها.

She remaind silent for a while, with her face towards the sky, before she suddenly said, “ And I am madly in love with you, too, just for being you.”
