whenever Bruce pisses Dick off during a case as Nightwing and Batman, Dick just goes and changes into his civilian work uniform so that he can pull out a gun in front of Batman and Batman can’t say shit. Jason finds it hysterical.
Batman: we don’t use guns.
Officer Grayson, cocking a pistol: i dunno who the fuck *we* is, but i sure as hell ain’t a part of it
Batman:
Red Hood, watching from a rooftop: *distant cackles*
Batman: *sigh* Dick-
Officer Grayson, raising his voice over the sound of him shooting at the ground near their opponents: OH I’M SORRY, HAVE WE MET BEFORE?
Batman: -I TOLD YOU I DIDN’T KNOW THE ICE-CREAM WAS YOURS, OK I’M SORRY-
Officer Grayson: I’M AFRAID I CAN’T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF ME BRINGING THE PEACE-
Batman: YOU JUST SHOT AT ME-
Red Hood: *filming* GET HIM, OFFICER!
Batman, ducking away from Dick’s shots: RED HOOD GO AWAY-

Okay here me out, Season 9 opens with Maddie talking a 911 call from a number she's having a hard time tracing. The person on the other line isn't speaking clearly or loudly enough and Maddie is growing more and more frustrated. Then there's a scuffle on the other end and Maddie's face pales when she hears, clear-as-day, a familiar voice say "send Athena."
Maddie ignores protocols, plays off the call as some sort of prank to Josh when he asks, and goes back to work. Except not really because she's doing everything she can to figure out where the call came from. Finally, she picks up a cell tower signal from a government base in the middle of nowhere. She immediately takes her break and calls Athena.
Athena is the middle of a meeting with her relator when she gets the call and she needs a minute anyway so she takes the call. She doesn't need any convincing and bails on the meeting with the realotr, getting into the car and speeding off to the location Maddie gives her. Maddie asks if she wants back up and Athena declines and makes her swear not to tell Chim or anyone at the 118 yet because she doesn't want to give them any false hope if they're wrong about this. Maddie agrees as long as Athena continues to check in with her.
Meanwhile Chimney is going through it trying to juggle being the new captain with being a dad of two. The sleepless nights are killing him and the extra work that comes with being a captain is endless. He confines in Hen, finally understanding why she turned down the job in the first place. She asks him if he's going to resign and he says no, he doesn't want to put the fate of the 118 in a stranger's hands, he just wishes Bobby would come back.
Then standard emergency things happen and Athena is trying desperately to get into this government lab thing and drama ensues. Finally, Athena is able to break through and she's racing through the corridor, checking empty room and room until she gets to the one at the end. There's a commotion coming from inside and she barges in and the camera stays on her but we here a raspy but familiar voice say "hi, baby."
And then FADE TO BLACK.
And then the second episode is the 118 responding to an emergency at said government lab to help get Athena and Bobby out, except they don't know they're rescuing Bobby until they're inside.

eddie is back in LA, and there's this itch of guilt scratching up the back of his throat...actually, less of an itch and more like a forest fire. it's on a rampage, nearly finds its way out, is trying to destroy him. so. y'know. he goes to confession.
if eddie a year ago heard himself say he was going to confession to absolve his guilt, he would have laughed right in his own face. but, this isn't a year ago, and this isn't just any confessional. because on the other side of the screen, is someone familiar, comforting. eddie sits, the wood bench creaking, and he exhales, slow, deliberate.
"bless me father, for i have sinned. it has been five months since my last confession"
and father brian, ever personable, one to buck convention, says eddie's name with something behind it like relief.
"did you find some joy, in these last five months."
and eddie huffs, doesn't even know where to begin.
"i danced. that night after our conversation. i danced in the living room, full on risky business style." it makes him happy to think of that night. the freedom he had felt, at least for one night. "i've been living in texas, too. my son moved in with me, turns out he'd been waiting for me."
"i'm happy to hear that, eddie."
eddie purses his lips, feels the tears welling up in his eyes, suddenly and unabated.
"um. i."
"what is it."
"my captain died. "
eddie hears a sharp intake of breath.
"bobby was uh. trapped with the rest of the 118 and he. he sacrificed himself.
i can't. i can't reconcile the fact that i wasn't there to save him. i wasn't there to help my team. the guilt, father, is crushing me, almost as heavy as the grief."
eddie lets himself pause, lets himself feel it all, lets the waves crash over him and drown him. and then he hears it, at the surface, a small sniffle.
and it brings him back up, suddenly alert.
father brian is crying.
"father?"
"i- i didn't know. i didnt know bobby had passed away."
and eddie's stomach drops to his feet. he's up scrambling, certain he's breaking a sacred catholic tradition, but that doesn't matter. he needs to comfort the priest. needs to be there for someone even if he couldn't be there for his team.
so he pushes his way into the father's side of the confessional and in the tiny space, leans down and envelops the priest in his arms. father brian clings to him, his body wracking with sobs.
"i helped him see that this life was worth living, we worked through it all, we were good friends. he. he was supposed to stick around, supposed to have a second chance."
"he did, father, he did. he saved so many people, he saved his team. his family. he lived a wonderful life."
finally eddie pulls back to look at the other man in the dark oak lighting of the booth. his breathing has evened, no wracking sobs barreling through his body.
"i'm so sorry, eddie, that was-"
eddie brings a hand to the father's cheek, wipes a tear from under his eye, "no, no. i needed that, i think. to be there for someone, to offer comfort in a way that's familiar to me."
eddie's hand is covered then, by the priests, holding it to his cheek, and eddie feels his own cheeks getting hot. he slips his hand away, suddenly all too aware that he's on his knees in front of him.
he bows his head, and sits back on his heels. "so that pretty much covers the our father's and the hail mary's, right? hugging a priest?"
father brian lets out a stilted laugh, like he's surprised by it. eddie laughs too, feels himself smile for the first time in days.
"i'd say so. unless there's anything else you'd like to confess?"
and eddie feels it, feels a second wave of guilt crawling up his throat, and he thinks of his position now, of his burning cheeks, of the way his reunion with buck felt like the final piece of the puzzle, or a nail in the coffin, and he says "i'm gay."
and, because he needs to know, he looks up at the father. he has a knowing smile on his face. says "and i'm still celibate."
eddie grins, "you were flirting with me that day though. weren't you?"
"you shaved the mustache. i thought it looked good."
and eddie shakes his head at how ridiculous this is, and amidst the grief and the guilt and the pain, he can feel a little light flick on in his chest.

Thinking about how Tommy told Buck that Eddie was his competition and Buck whole heartedly denying it is so funny to me because Eddie was his competition, just not in the way Buck was thinking exactly. Like whether Buck is in love with Eddie or not (he definitely is) has nothing to do with it. It’s the fact that Eddie is a jealous, petty, possessive little shit when it comes to Buck (and in general - I mean look at his beef with Josh). Like from day 1. He had beef with Abby and he had never even met the woman almost two seasons later (the last episode of season 3). His beef with Taylor is very well documented. So when Tommy strolled up, and Eddie said “this changes nothing” he meant it. He treated him like he would treat any of Buck’s “partners”. He came up with the idea of going as Crockett and Tubbs for Chim’s party. He made petty remarks when Tommy showed up. He was already sitting in the hospital chair with no visitors badge when Buck dislocated his arm. He was always there, always with Buck. Tommy said that Eddie stopped talking to him after he broke up with Buck, but I’m sure their friendship had been fading out long before then. So yes, Eddie was competing with Tommy. But Buck thought he meant that it was because Buck was secretly in love with him, when in reality it’s because Eddie keeps engaging in these weird mating rituals, like some sort of peacock trying to get Buck to tell him he has the prettiest feathers, meanwhile Buck is oblivious to it all.

The car ride back from the airport to the house is quiet. The house that was already haunted, silent, even more so now when Bobby is gone and Buck has to be alone with his thoughts. His brain was everything but silent, though.
"I should have been there," Eddie finally says, when Buck parks his car on the driveway. They had barely said anything since Eddie stepped off the plane, Buck just waiting in the car for Eddie to find him on his own. They hadn't even touched yet, barely even looked at each other.
"Stop that, right now," Buck whispers, his hands still tight on the steering wheel, not even turning the car off. "You fucking. Stop. That." He feels Eddie's gaze on him.
"Buck–"
"No." He turns off the car, unclips his belt and slams the door shut as he steps out, storming to the front door. His head is loud and he just wants it to shut up. He reaches for the keys in his pockets but is stopped by a hand on his wrist.
"Buck." Eddie's voice sounds muffled, Buck didn't even hear him hurry after him. His brain is screaming.
He shrugs Eddie off. "Stop! I don't need– I don't–". Buck's voice cracks, and Eddie's hand is back on his arm, grabbing harder this time.
"Hey. Okay, I'm here now," Eddie says as he grabs the keys from Buck's pocket and unlocks the door. "Let's go inside."
Buck lets himself be steered inside while Eddie closes the door behind them. Buck feels his eyes burning but refuses to let any tears shed. He needs to be calm, collected. They're gonna need him. But Eddie is here and Buck has longed for this moment. He wanted Eddie back in LA so bad. Just not like this. Never like this.
Buck closes his eyes and swallows. "You shouldn't have been here."
Eddie's breath hitches. "Why?"
"You were safe. You and Chris were safe. If– If I lost you–" he doesn't finish the sentence because his knees start to give out. Eddie catches him before he falls to the floor.
"Hey, shh. We were safe, okay? Chris and I were safe. We are safe." A soft confession. "You are safe."
"Bobby–"
"Bobby's dead."
"He was fine. He got out."
"He's dead, Buck."
And he breaks. Sobs so hard he can't breathe. He gasps for air and Eddie has to lift his arms up, like he's a child who got a ball kicked in his stomach. Eddie searches his eyes, a familiar thing he always does when he needs Buck to look at him. "Breathe with me. In... out. In... out." Buck follows. It always works. "There you are."
He gasps for air for a minute and he ends up coughing so hard he almost throws up on Eddie. Eddie moves his hands to pull Buck to his chest as they're kneeling on the floor, hands stroking up and down Buck's back. "We're gonna get through this. I promise."
"You're here."
"I'm here." Eddie smiles at him as he says it. "A little sooner than I planned, though."
Buck sighs of relief against Eddie's chest, and suddenly the house feels a lot less silent and his head a lot less loud.

Estate Executor: Thank you all for coming here today. We shall now read the last will and testament of Robert Wade Grant-Nash. He leaves all of his earthly property to his wife, Athena Grant, with the following exceptions:
I, Robert Grant-Nash, leave my father’s baseball glove to Harry Grant;
I, Robert Grant-Nash, leave my ice skating equipment, gear, and outfit & sequin repair gun to May Grant;
I, Robert Grant-Nash, leave my son Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley in the care of Edmundo Diaz, to have and to hold in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live. Don’t make me come back down to knock some sense into the two of you.
Everyone: (Gasps)
Buck: what does that mean?
Maddie & Tommy (in unison): I knew it!
Eddie: How does he get to one-up my own will reveal???!
Bobby: (staggering through the door cover in Mud and Fresh Dirt): Don’t read the will! There’s some Gay stuff in there…
Everyone: Bobby????! You’re alive?

A sort of fake not so fake-dating concept where the couple is dating but everyone thinks that they’re fake dating.
Hal and Bruce decide to tell their families that they’re together around the same time that they have to go on an undercover mission and pose as a couple.
No one ever outright says that they don’t believe them, but it’s mutually agreed upon. In fact, Bruce’s kids are a little offended that he’s trying to ‘trick them’ into thinking he’s in a healthy relationship at the moment. He has a track record and it’s made them a little biased.
Hal and Bruce are completely oblivious to everyone not believing them and are having the time of their life being a lovey-dovey couple in public with each other.
The others are just so surprised on how willing they are to immerse in their undercover roles but they figure that Bruce wants it to be as realistic as possible. Anything to make sure that nothing goes wrong on the mission, he’s Batman, it’s gotta be perfect.
They go on the mission and it goes flawlessly as expected and when they get back, everyone is expecting them to get back to their regular dynamic. Bruce passive aggressively hating on Green Lantern, and Hal going back to doing his best to shit on and annoy Batman.
But that doesn’t happen.
Since the two wrongfully assume that everyone knows that they’re in an actual relationship, they’re a lot softer around each other.
Obviously their snark and bitchiness never goes away, it’s who they are, but it’s not cruel and aimed to purposely hurt anymore. It’s playfully and gentle.
But still, no one is letting their guard down. Maybe this is a training lesson or something? They’re thinking about any and every possibility on why these two continue to pretend to be in a relationship.
Then, Damian walks in on them simply… sitting. Just sitting together.
Bruce is curled up on Hal’s side, letting the other man play with the loose strands of his hair as he reads a book. Hal whispers something into Bruce’s ear and the man lets out a genuine giggle and sighs softly, gazing up at him with such a fond expression that it’s painful.
Then they kiss. Nothing explicit. In fact, it’s just a peck, a simple brush of the lips before they go back to their comfortable silence.
Damian slips away and is faced with the realization that his Baba is in a genuine relationship with that man and he does seem happy. And really, isn’t that what Damian hoped his Baba would find?
Damian tried to tell his siblings but none of them believe him. They think that Bruce is bribing Damian with another pet or something and brush their little brother off.
The next to figure it out is Cass and Duke. Duke had finally agreed to her multitude of requests to help her practice for the next ballet showcase she had. As they’re walking through the halls, they can hear faint old timey music playing from the ballroom, which is confusing because usually no one comes over here unless there’s a gala.
They crack open the door, and in the middle of the room is Bruce and Hal pressed up against each other, simply swaying to the music. You can’t really call what they’re doing dancing, but it’s soft and intimate and just… lovely.
Hal’s head is pressed against Bruce’s chest, right where is heart is located. He seemed to be swaying to Bruce’s heartbeat rather than the soft music playing in the background.
Bruce is hugging the other man tightly, his eyes closed tight as he followed Hal’s lead.
Cass and Duke exchange a wide eyed look as the quietly close the ballroom door and run off, wondering how they didn’t believe them when it was obvious.
Again, the two tried to tell their sibling (Damian feels vindicated) but still, disbelief.
Tim is fully refreshed when he finds out so he can’t even blame what he see on being sleep deprived or in a coffee induced spiral.
Tim knew Bruce was wrapped up in his own case, a bad one where Bruce refused to let any of his children even look at the crime scene photos or read the victim’s autopsy’s, so Tim figured he’d have to be the one to get Bruce to go to sleep.
Tim didn’t bother knocking on the door to Bruce’s study, he simply opened it and froze when he realized Bruce wasn’t alone. No, Hal was also there.
Hal was holding Bruce. No. He was cradling his dad… and Bruce looked calm in the other man’s embrace. Bruce wasn’t crying or yelling or even angry, but still there was emotion radiating from him that Tim couldn’t place.
But as Hal squeezed tighter, it receded. There was still a heavy weight holding Bruce down, but now his dad was hugging Hal back just as tightly.
Tim slowly stepped back and blinked. Hal was there. Hal was there for his dad and he was taking care of him, being gentle, showing him love…
How could he ever think that they weren’t in love?
One morning, on the rare occasion Dick stayed over at the manor, he walked into the kitchen to find Bruce there.
Bruce was making breakfast, something he rarely did anymore. Dick has known Bruce longer than anyone in the house (obviously we’re not talking about Alfred) and he knows that Bruce is a good cook. But he also knows how taxing cooking can be for his dad, which is why Bruce doesn’t do it often.
But here he was, happily cooking breakfast early in the morning. Hal was there too, clinging onto his back with his face buried in his dad’s neck. Bruce gets Hal to lift his face to taste test something and Dick can see the exhausted yet adoring expression on his face.
Dick backs out quietly, his heart thumping in his chest. What the fuck? His Tati was in an actual relationship with Hal Jordan. Oh fuck. They are so in love.
Before Dick could get to him, Jason is also faced with the realization that Bruce was in a serious relationship
Jason misses his dad. He’ll never say that shit to his face but he does. So, he makes up an excuse to go and see Bruce. Maybe he’ll complain about something, maybe he’ll act nice. Jason will decide on the way.
It’s a Tuesday at 10 in the morning, so Bruce should be in the library for his morning reading. Jason pops his head in and is confused when he doesn’t see Bruce sitting in his designated leather recliner.
There’s no way Bruce isn’t there, so Jason stalks through the rows of the bookshelves searching for him. Just as he’s about to leave, he spots him.
Bruce is in the very back, usually where the kids sit because it only has beanbags. Hal is cuddled up in his dad’s lap, the sound of an audiobook is playing as the two stare at a book.
Jason watches silently as Jordan complains that most of the words are nonsensical while Bruce just chuckles and presses a kiss to his cheek.
Bruce hates audiobooks. They go too slow and he swears that he can hear the narrator’s nasally breathing and the sound of their spit sticking to the roof of their mouths.
But here he is, happily listening to an audiobook. Listening to an audiobook and smiling happily as Hal interrupts to comment, complain, or just make a joke.
Oh fuck. Damian was right. They are dating.
Steph doesn’t count herself to Bruce’s kid, no matter what the old man says. She doesn’t need a Dad, especially not if it’s Bruce.
That doesn’t mean she doesn’t want the guy to find happiness. It’d probably make him a lot more bearable to be around.
So, ignoring the laughable fake-dating scheme that she can see a mile away with Hal Jordan, she decides to take it upon herself and set Bruce up on some dates.
Bruce seems uncomfortable with the idea, no surprise there, but Hal (who is starting to hang around the manor more than she does) seems to think the whole thing is hilarious. Bruce keeps shooting him glares but it only seems to make the man laughed harder.
At first, the dates seem to be going well (yes she is spying, what else would she do with her day?) but then suddenly crash and burn. And who is doing the burning? Hal!
He’s at every restaurant, movie theater, or carnival that Steph sends Bruce to. Bruce seems incredibly smug every time Hal shows up with a pissed off expression and she just can’t figure out why.
After the tenth time of this phenomena, Steph was going to confront him. After Hal had scared of Bruce’s date and dragged Bruce away, she followed them to a nearby alleyway where she was greeted with an unusual site.
Bruce was laughing at the pouty expression Hal was sporting and pressing a flurry of kisses across the other man’s face, reassuring him that the dates meant absolutely nothing and Steph was just playing around.
Damn. Stephanie felt like a fucking idiot. Seriously, it was so obvious.
Alfred knew. Alfred probably knew Bruce was in love with Hal before Bruce knew he was in love with Hal.
Bruce has been in love before. And Alfred has always been there every step of the way, picking up the broken pieces of his little when he inevitably gets discarded and thrown away.
But he’s never seen Bruce like this before. So…
Alfred will keep watching, it’s what he’s best at. And he’ll be here for when Bruce needs to be put back together.
But maybe… maybe he won’t have to be this time.
Oh my, his son has grown up quite a bit. Alfred faintly wonders how Martha and Thomas would’ve felt, seeing their son so in love.
