Chapter 2: The Sideline Stares
4 October, 1975
“James, could you be any louder in that bathroom?” Y elled a 15 year old Sirius black at 5am from the Marauder’s dorm room. “Y eah James, some of us like to sleep at five o’clock in the morning.” Yelled Remus Lupin, half awake and clasping a pillow onto his ears. James Potter was currently racing through his morning bathroom routine to get to quidditch practice on time. He was ecstatic for it was the first practice of the season, and it was his big excuse to spy on his newfound crush, Regulus Black. James realized he had a thing for him ever since he saw him helping new players at tryouts the previous weekend. For some reason, it was like something in James’ brain chemistry changed. He had never felt that way about Regulus until that day. Before that, he had just seen him as Sirius’ pompous little brother in Slytherin, but on that day there was something kinder about him that James had seen. He seemed softer and almost pleasant to be around. This caused James to absolutely spiral all week long. He could barely focus on classwork- not that he usually focused that much anyway- but it was far worse now. He felt quite awful considering he found himself attracted to his best friend's baby brother.
“Sorry mates, but quidditch practice starts today, and I have to get there on time.” James said, opening the bathroom door to his exhausted friends that look mildly pissed but also kind of used to it. He had been doing this since his second year. “Yeah whatever. Just get out of here, so we can go back to bed.” Said Sirius, shooing James off. “Alright, I’ll catch you guys later.”
James sprinted out the door and down to the common room with his broom in hand. He then left quickly for the quidditch field. That is, until he was stopped in his tracks by none other than Regulus Black, also heading in his same direction. James contemplated going to talk to him, but it was quite possible that Regulus hated him. That thought made James a bit ill. James forced himself out of his trance and started back off for the field.
When he arrived he went straight for the captain and one of his dearest friends, Marlene McKinnon. “Hey James! You ready for the season?” She yelled, waving him over. “I always am, captain.” James said, cheekily. He was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t made captain, but he understood. Marlene was truly an incredible player and friend. She had the best set of skills he’d ever seen. People tell her all the time that she could go all the way if she wanted too. “So are we sharing the field with the Slytherin team today?” James asked, trying not to seem too excited. “Yeah, I actually asked their captain if we could get in a little practice against them”
“Already? This is only the first practice, Marls.”
“Yeah, but I think the best way to get good is to dive head first. We have our first game in two weeks, and I want to win.”
“Well you are the captain.”
“That’s right. So I suggest getting together with the rest of the team so we can start warmups.” With that instruction, James went to stand with the rest of the team. Marlene started to give orders. James noticed that she was a bit nervous. How could she not be? Though she is a natural born leader, she definitely was scared of screwing things up with the team. James found himself struggling to focus on her words though because his eyes kept wandering to the sideline where Regulus was stretching. “Oh bloody hell.” James thought. How could something feel so wrong, but look so very right at the same time. It wasn’t fair. It kind of reminded him of the time his parents took him to a muggle museum when he was six, and he wasn’t allowed to touch anything. He felt very defeated by that then and now. “James? Are you paying attention?” Marlene shouted at him. “Yeah, of course.” Marlene looked at him like she could absolutely murder the next person that tried her, especially if that person was him. Marlene continued to talk and James tried his absolute best to listen and whatever he did, he could not think of Regulus Black.
About two hours later, they had finally finished practicing by themselves, so Marlene ordered them to prepare to play against the Slytherin team. James set his glasses down by his broom and made his way to the water station to get a drink. He saw a burry figure in green over there as well, though for some reason, it didn’t occur to think about who it might be. As he got closer, the boy got less blurry and James realized it was none other than Regulus. “Of course it is,” James thought. James nervously continued for the water, for flying in the air for almost two hours makes you very parched. He regained his confidence and strutted over there. His plan was to just be chill and stand next to him and not talk. Unfortunately, James’ mouth likes to move before his brain can think. “Hey.” James said, unconsciously. “Hi?” Said Regulus, very confused as to why his brother’s Gryffindor best friend would ever talk to him. No doubt Sirius was telling all his friends awful things about him and his family. “Ready for us to kick your arse?” James replied, trying to seem confident. “Says who?”
“Me.”
“Yeah right, Potter. Slytherin is going to come out on top. We always do.”
“Debatable. We did win against you last year, and the year before, and the year before.”
“Not this year.” By the end of this exchange James and Regulus had gotten in much closer proximity to each other. James tried to keep his composure, but he could practically feel his stomach flipping, and his heart beating so hard it felt like it may burst. “See you in the sky, Potter.” Regulus said, turning to walk away. James took a deep breath and grabbed a drink of water. He was down bad, and he knew it. He also knew that he was going to be in massive trouble if Sirius ever found out. Or any of the guys for that matter. They might stop being friends with him if they knew he liked a boy. None of the others did, and it’s not like talking about if they had a problem with homos was a popular topic of conversation between them.
“Alright, break over! Everyone in position!” Marlene shouted at the Gryffindor team. James hazily made his way over to his position as chaser. He grabbed his broom and glasses and headed up to the sky. He was trying to focus on the game. He couldn’t be distracted. That’s when Marlene’s whistle blew. James flew out to the middle of the field, trying to keep his eye on the quaffle. It bounced from person to person, getting closer to him. It started heading his way, but a giant bludger came at him from his right. Luckily, he dived down just in time to avoid it, but this caused one of the Slytherin catchers to catch the quaffle. James was visibly annoyed by this. He’s always had issues with disappointing people because his parents set such high expectations for him. James’ anger caused a spike in his playing ability. After about two minutes he had already gotten the quaffle back and was heading for the goals. He had all three Slytherin chasers on his arse, but he made it to the goals, shot, and scored. His whole team came up to him and cheered with him. James had forgotten about everything that had happened before this moment because he felt proud of himself. Quidditch was really one of the only times he felt that way. He made decent grades but not as good as Remus, and he didn’t have as good a game with the ladies as Sirius had. He even felt like Peter was better than him at certain things, but when he was playing quidditch, he was able to completely let all of that go and enjoy himself.
“Back in positions!” Yelled the Slytherin captain. James got back into position and waited for the whistle to go off. But as Marlene blew her whistle, Regulus came flying upward right in front of him. This was normal considering he was the seeker, and any other year this would never distract him, but this year James couldn’t help but stare at him. He looked quite beautiful in the wind like that, reaching for the snitch. James was so distracted that he didn’t notice the bludger flying right at his face. In fact, he didn’t notice until one of the beaters came and knocked it away. “Bloody hell, Potter. Watch out, will ya?”
“Sorry mate. Won’t happen again.” James replied back, a little scared that the team noticed him staring and that everyone was going to know he fancied a dude. At that, the whistle blew. “End of match!” Marlene yelled from her position. Someone had caught the snitch and ended the game. They all flew back down to the ground. James noticed that it was Regulus with the snitch in his hand. James felt the need to congratulate him, but he figured that would be odd considering they were on opposite teams. He lined up to give the normal “good game” high five. James knew he was very off his game the whole time. He had to be prepared next time. Once they were all let loose, James headed to the locker room to shower and change, so he could join his friends for breakfast. He had to be better focused tomorrow. He had to be.
5 October, 1975
The next day had been better because they didn’t actually have to play against the Slytherins. They mainly just focused on what went wrong yesterday that caused them to lose and how to fix it. Marlene really drilled focus into them. James was pretty sure it was because of him because she kept eyeing him while talking about it, and Marlene just didn’t want to call her own friend out. She didn’t really need to talk about it though because James was already beating himself up about it. Luckily, James really focused in and did a lot better. Everyone else did great as well. His only issue was during breaks where he would run into Regulus at the water station. “They really need to get a second station.” James thought, walking over to the water station. James refrained from starting a conversation. In fact, it was Regulus to talk to him first this time. “Told you we’d win yesterday.”
“Yeah well, I was distracted.”
“By what?”
“None of your business, Black. Just know that we will kick your bloody arse in the game in two weeks.”
“We’ll see about that.”
“Suppose we will.” With that Regulus walked away with his water. James was sweating from both practice and his conversation. He wondered if it was possible to sweat on the inside because he felt as though his body temperature was rising a bit too much, and his clothes were about to catch on fire from his burning skin. He filled up a cup of water and dumped it on his face. When he rubbed his eyes of the water, he felt a pair of eyes on him. When he looked to his left, he saw none other than Regulus Black staring at him. Regulus quickly looked away. It seemed to James he was embarrassed to be staring. James looked down and smirked to himself, heading back to practice.
For the rest of the day, James thought about that specific moment. How could he not? His crush stared at him whilst he dumped water on his face, and then looked embarrassed when he was caught. “That has to mean something, right?” That was the question James had asked himself all day long. When he was showering, when he was eating, even when he was with his friends. Apparently, Remus had noticed James was off in his own land because he confronted him later that night in the Gryffindor common room. “It’s nothing, Remus. Just thinking.”
“You know how to think?”
“Very funny, Moony.”
“Well if you want to talk, you know I’m here. And if you want a place to think some more, I also know the astronomy tower is usually empty past 10 o’clock.”
“Thanks, mate. I appreciate it.”
“Of course, mate. I’m gonna head up to bed now.” James nodded, and Remus headed upstairs. James waited until he couldn’t see Remus anymore to sneak out of the common room. He has to manage to get past the paintings because they will absolutely tell on him. They’re very loud. He has done it before considering they pull a ton of pranks all the time, usually at night, but still, getting caught is the last thing James needed. Luckily, the astronomy tower entrance was close to Gryffindor tower. James tiptoed his way to the steps with only his wand for light.
When he got up there, he saw that someone was already there. He tried to turn around, but he stubbed his toe on the wall. “Shit” James loudly whispered. “Is someone there?” Asked a seemingly familiar voice to James. It was Regulus. “Bloody hell.” James whispered, shaking his head at his awful luck. “I know someone’s there. I have my wand, so don- James is that you?” Regulus said, interrupting himself. “Uh, yeah. It’s me.”
“What are you doing up here?” Regulus asked, putting his wand back in his pocket. To Regulus, James wasn’t much of a threat. Not because he wasn’t good at magic, but because he doubted James would attack him. Not if Sirius wasn’t with him. “I was just bored. Wanted a quiet place to think. I can leave though.” James turned to walk away. “No, wait. You can stay up here. I don’t mind.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I don’t bite… usually.” Regulus let out a chuckle. “Was that a joke? You know how to make a joke?”
“Why are you so surprised? I know it might seem that way, but I actually don’t have a stick up my arse.” This time, James let out a chuckle. He followed Regulus up the edge and sat down next to him. “So what are you here to think about?” Regulus asked James in a very soft tone that made James' heart flutter a bit. “Oh nothing much. There’s just this b- girl I fancy, and I want to think she likes me back but we're not really friends or anything. In fact, she probably hates me” James stuttered these words, trying to make it seem as though he was actually talking about a girl. “Oh? Guess I’m kind of in a similar boat.” James looked at Regulus. “There’s someone I might fancy as well. I can’t tell if I actually do though. She’s pretty, but we’re in different houses, and she’s very different from me.”
“Oh?” James responded. He should have known that Regulus didn’t feel the same way. Who would? He’s probably the only boy in the whole school that has had feelings for a guy. James tried to repress his disappointment, hoping Regulus wouldn’t notice that he was dying on the inside. “Yeah. It sucks doesn’t it? Not knowing if the person you fancy likes you back. Especially if you’re not supposed to be with them.”
“I dunno. Maybe it’s better not knowing. At least then you can believe whatever you want.”
“I mean in my case, I would never be allowed to be with them anyway. My parents would never allow that. Not with me being the new heir to the Noble House of Black.”
“I’m sorry.” James said, trying to comfort Regulus. “It’s alright. At least I’ll be in charge, right?”
“Yeah, but do you want to be?”
“I dunno. I was never really given the option of it. It was just sort of thrust upon me when my parents kicked Sirius out.” Regulus and James sat there in silence for a moment. “I ought to go. School’s tomorrow, and I don’t want to wake up late. Wanna come down with me?” Regulus asked, standing up. “No, I think I’ll sit here for a little longer if you don’t mind?”
“Not at all. Perhaps I’ll see you up here another time. Goodnight, Potter.”
“Night, Black.” James heard Regulus leave, and as soon as he couldn’t hear him anymore, he let out a soft sob. “Of course he doesn't like me. What is wrong with me? Why can’ t I just be normal like every other guy at Hogwarts?” James sat there for a little while longer before getting up. By the time he got back to his room, all the boys were asleep and it was 2am. James crawled into bed, feeling very numb on the inside. Like someone took his emotion away from him, and that someone was Regulus Black

Chapter 1: Pages of a Secret Story
20 October, 1995
Harry James Potter loathed Draco Lucius Malfoy. At least, that’s what he thinks. His friends know differently. Ron and Hermione knew that Harry had a massive crush on Draco. It was so obvious that his whole house could know as well. The only person that didn’t know was Harry himself. He was completely oblivious to his own feelings.
Right now, Harry is making his way toward 12 Grimmauld Place to visit his godfather, Sirius Black. He’s staying there for the weekend to spend some time with the only living man he considered family. He was a bit nervous; he didn’t really know what he could do there. He supposes he will find out in about a minute. He stared at the flat, almost afraid to walk in. He hadn’t really gotten to know Sirius that much since he had to stay in hiding after escaping Azkaban in Harry’s 3rd year. This was the first time he’d ever spent any elongated time with him. Harry made his way to the door, hesitating slightly. He knocked. He waits a moment and hears a pair of footsteps getting louder, making their way to the door. He watches the door handle quickly turn. He looks up to see the kind face of Sirius Black looking him right in the center of his bright green eyes. “Harry! Welcome!” Sirius exclaimed.
“Yeah, thank you for inviting me over Sirius.”
“Of course, my dear boy! Please come on in. I’d hate to be seen.” Sirius rushed Harry inside. The place looked exactly as he remembered it when he first came to join The Order. It still had that cold and regretful feeling to it. Almost as if there was a ghost haunting the place. A ghost with a lot of regret that is. “Please make yourself at home this weekend. I made Kreature clean all the rooms, so you’d be able to choose which one you’d want to sleep in. They’re just down that hall if you want to take your bag down.” Sirius told Harry, with an almost equally as nervous tone as Harry felt on the inside whilst gesturing toward a stairwell. “Alright. Thank you.”
“Of course. And down there is the kitchen and sitting room if you want to hang around down here.” He said now gesturing towards the corner that led to the kitchen. Harry nodded and started to make his way up the stairs. It was quite a dark and harrowing hallway. It made Harry feel as if the walls were closing in on him. It was a bit different last time he was here because there were also about 13 other people there to make it a bit more comfier. Now it was completely silent aside from the faint sound of Kreatcher cooking dinner all the way downstairs.
He made his way down the hallway and decided to stop at a room that said “Regulus” on the door. Harry knew that name. It belonged to Sirius’ estranged younger brother. For some reason, Harry felt drawn to the room. As if fate were telling him to open the door. He stared at the golden door knob for a moment before reaching toward it. He slowly turned the knob and when he opened the door he saw a room no different than a teenage boys would be. It had peeling blue wallpaper that had decaying Slytherin quidditch posters tacked to it. There was a piano in the corner, as well as a desk and dresser on the other wall. They were all the same shade of brown, but the dresser had a dirty mirror on top of it. The bed was quite wide which left little walking room through the bedroom. Though Harry didn’t mind too much, considering he lived in a cupboard for 10 years of his life, this room was like a mansion. The sheets were a reddish color and the comforter was blue. They were the only things in the room that looked new. Everything else seemed to have been sitting there and rotting for 30 years- “well I suppose it had.” Thought Harry.
He set his stuff down and sat on the bed. He was tempted to look through the desk, as he was a bit nosey sometimes. He started toward it and sat down at the chair. It almost gave out at Harry’s weight the second he plopped down on it. He stared at it for a while and pulled on the golden handle that opened the bottom drawer. Inside was only some old parchment and quill. There was also an empty bottle of ink that Harry assumed was either used up or dried out over time. It all was quite boring, so Harry decided to wander around a bit. He set his jacket down on the bed and set back off for the unlit hallway.
As Harry stood in the hallway he contemplated where he should go. He looked around and then up. He stopped and noticed that there was an attic door opening with a string hanging to pull down the ladder. He slowly walked toward it cause he didn’t want to be too loud incase he wasn’t allowed to be up there. He did stop for a second and consider whether or not it was a good idea to go into the attic. Dinner was almost ready and he wasn’t sure if he was allowed up there. After sort of careful consideration though, he still made his way up the rickety ladder.
The attic had a dusty smell to it. Harry could feel the 30 plus layers of dust traveling up his nose and down to his lungs. He coughed into his shirt sleeve, trying to conceal that he was upstairs. The attic was cold as well, but not in a temperature way. More of a lonely way, like no one had been up there in years. The attic was practically filled to the brim with boxes of stuff. He looked around a bit, but nothing caught his attention. That is, until he saw a small box labeled James sitting in the corner of the room. He made his way to it, eager to find out what things of his fathers Sirius still has. He picked up the box and sat on the attic floor in its place. It wasn’t very heavy and it was also untaped. He set the box on his lap and began to open it. Inside he saw only 3 things, including a quidditch trophy from 1974, a few Spider-Man comics from the 70’s, and a journal. Harry had to admit he was a little hesitant to open the journal. Last time he found a journal it turned out to be the ghost of Tom Riddle and he was going around petrifying people with a basilisk. He even forced Ginny Weasly to do his dirty work for him. Thinking about that time during his second year surprisingly reassured Harry that nothing can be as bad as that.
He opened the journal and saw that there were entries all throughout. Turns out it was a diary from his dads time at Hogwarts. The first entry was from 4 October, 1975. Almost exactly 10 years ago. Harry started to read in hopes to find a connection with his dad. The only other time he felt that way was when he played quidditch, and he desperately craved a way to know his family better. He never got the chance to know either of his parents personally. He only heard the same things from everyone else; His mother was bright and his father was a prankster.
4 October , 1975
Today was the first day of quidditch practice for this year's season. I saw Regulus in the air practicing as well. He looked so beautiful from that angle. Like he was an angel. Or perhaps a demon sent to tempt me. Unfortunately, it was working a little too well. Everytime I see him, it’ s like my heart swells up and might just burst. I feel a little bad for Lily, even though we never dated or anything, I still told her I liked her for 4 years. I’m just glad she never felt the same. I also feel bad for Sirius. I mean what kind of best friend falls for his best friend's baby brother. I mean it’ s not like I’d act on these feelings anyway. Not unless I got Sirius’ blessing which I know he would never give. That kinda sucks doesn’ t it? I suppose I ought to go to bed. I have more practice in the morning. At least I can watch from a distance right?
Harry’s jaw had dropped and his eyes had completely bugged out. He could not believe what he just read. His head and heart started to pound in synchronization as the words lightly uttered out of his mouth. “My dad and Sirius’ little brother?” Harry had a fear behind his voice. Almost as if he was scared of his own thoughts about this. While he had no problem with homosexuals, he never really knew any, and he certainly didn’t think his father would be one. About a million thoughts raced through Harry’s brain. However, the one that stuck out the most was “Does this mean my dad never loved my mom?” This thought terrified him. If it were true that would mean everything he had ever been told was a lie.
“Harry? Would you like to come down for dinner?” Sirius faintly shouted from the bottom of the stairs. Harry forced himself out of his trance to answer him back. “Yeah, I’ll be down in a minute.”
“Alright.” Harry heard back. He quickly stood and set the box back in its spot. He kept the diary and swiftly climbed back down the ladder to shut the door on the ceiling. He went into his room and shoved the diary in his jacket’s inner pocket. He made his way downstairs trying to remain calm and get through this dinner as fast as he could because oddly enough, Harry found himself wanting to read more.

Hi, I’m Rey! I really wanna get into writing fanfics, but idk what people would wanna see, so I’m gonna do a poll and hopefully it gets some attention. Here are my ideas:
1. MC has been friends with James Potter for years. Her best friend, Lily, has started to catch feelings for him and tells her all about it. She’s jealous, but she has no idea why until it’s too late.
2. Post-prank remus is pissed at Sirius, but he has no clue what to do. That is until Barty, who is recently single, suggests they start a fake-dating ruse as a way to make Evan jealous and Sirius pissed.
3. MC is Stefan and Damon Salvatores sister. She’s recently moved back to Mystic Falls after being gone for almost 150 years when she finds out Katherine is back. She meet Caroline Forbes and instantly becomes friends with her. Eventually Klaus comes into town and she realizes Caroline has feelings for him. She is perplexed by the sudden jealousy she feels for him.
4. 1970’s Marauders fame AU. Lily Evans is an aspiring actress and James Potter is an aspiring musician. They become friends, so naturally they complain to each other about the awful paparazzi. This leads then to the idea that they should start a fake relationship as a way to mess with the paparazzi. Of course, this is until their feelings get a little complicated.
5. Harry Potter is desperately into Draco Malfoy, but he has no clue about it. He finds himself going through some old stuff in Sirius’ attic. He finds an old notebook that used to be his dad’s. Harry discovers that his dad was not only with his mom, but also dated Regulus Black during his time at Hogwarts. He reads through the flashbacks which help him to process his own feelings for Draco.
