Ok...... feels like the core of my argument on my previous reblog was thrown out the window to go on a tangent about why Riddle's mom sucks. At no point was that an issue of contention.
By no means am I or Raven an all-knowing TWST god, nor is this headcanon irrefutably wrong because "we said so", or something like that. I even said it was fine to headcanon what you wanted, which was seen and subsequently ignored. But there are absolutely people taking this as canon, if you check the reblogs and comments (and Twitter), and we have both (separately/unaffiliated and without bashing fans, mind you) provided some counter analysis that people might find interesting or useful, especially given how disturbing they might find this theory. There's no need to take it personally.
It feels like parts of what I said were cherry-picked to reshape the entire argument to be "his mom sucks, he just can't tell, but we can. people have personal experience with this and like the headcanon." Which I never said anything contrary to, so I don't particularly feel the need to counter that.
What I will say is that there is a slippery slope here. The entire main cast is made up of villains. People say and do morally grey things constantly. We see them at their worst, but we also see them at their best, and we get a sense of the logic behind their actions.
We've only seen Mrs. Rosehearts at her worst, and that may never change. This isn't particularly in defense of her either, though I know people who struggle with unbiased critical analysis won't get that. But again, as extreme as her actions are, there's an undeniable logic (bearing in mind that not good =/= not logical) behind them: making Riddle as strong and capable as possible. And Idia's analysis in book 6 reveals that her efforts have, in fact, paid off. "Correcting" people to be right-handed, though? Usually done for religious or superstitious reasons, which seems directly antithetical to what we've seen of her. (Especially when the future she's preparing him for would want good use of both hands, if anything.)
"My XYZ experienced this" or "my mother is just like this, so I can see it happening" will undoubtedly shape people's headcanons. This is fine. She could be deeply religious or some other thing we haven't seen. But the slippery slope comes into play when it boils down to "well, she's a bitch, so of course she did this also." Because, in a game revolving around villains, you can apply that phrase to almost the ENTIRE CAST.
The game explores in-depth how doing one bad thing, or even multiple bad things, does not make you cartoonishly kick-the-dog evil. Every character clearly has their flaws, their logic, their standards. Some are pretty low. Some won't ever get higher. But deciding someone has done something bad, regardless of what it is, PURELY because they did some other bad stuff, seems like an incredibly tone-deaf stance to take, given the source material. And some fans have definitely done this.
Headcanons I have no problem with. Media literacy (and deciding things are canon when they're not) I do.

It's likely a Riddle-exclusive thing because of the Alice parallels, including the fact that their names are similar.
Mirrors are pretty significant in TWST. And they're also pretty important in Through the Looking-Glass, the Alice in Wonderland sequel that has been referenced several times in the game - for example, Riddle's horse Vorpal is named from there. Alice climbs through a mirror and discovers that, like a reflection, everything is reversed, including logic (paraphrasing from the internet). Any time something in TWST can be taken as a coincidence or a reference, it's almost certainly the latter.
Moreover, a little bird also uses a comparison to point out why his in-game profile would presumably say something else if this was the case... and, quite frankly, something like this just feels too important to be so vaguely alluded to when they haven't shied away from sharing other things his mother has done.

I keep mentally pronouncing Roi du Poison as Roi du Poisson and every time I do I picture Vil frying up a couple of fish (eels usually) like they're mini Rollos from a dramatic low camera angle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why not both : du pois(s)on
Idk abt frying underwater, but I guess you could use thermal vents to cook/boil ??

I should elaborate that my first mutual (on my other blog) is basically a fandom celebrity I followed ages ago, barely interacted with, and have posted practically nothing for said fandom. Why do you like me bro
Being mutuals is something that on paper I understand but in practice? What are requirements??
Like okay sure you follow each other. But what else? Is there a certain portion of their content you need to interact with to seem like a properly appreciative mutual? (I'm so bad at that.) Do you tag them in stuff you make/think is cool? (Feels like I'm bothering them.) Do you strike up conversations in DMs? (And what do you even say when you're socially awkward that doesn't immediately make them want to unfollow you?)
How to people pls

Not entirely related, but another point of consideration: Jade's magic can fail if the target is too guarded, while Jamil's seemingly cannot (barring things like Floyd's UM). In other words, Jamil is more forcefully taking control to begin with - and his ability to do so is also associated with his strength as a mage. If Jade was a more powerful mage, would he be able to "force" his spell through on more targets, or use it repeatedly on them, etc? Would it have similar effects?
Potentially in a similar boat is Fellow/Ernesto, whose magic is fairly weak, and he can't force anyone to do anything they really don't want to, only increase their willingness to do so. Jade's magic presumably falls somewhere on the pipeline between the two, in both strength and application (that is, his magic might be more of a combination of persuasion and control, and accordingly have different effects).
Returning to Jamil, since his magic doesn't necessarily cause pain if the target is accepting/unaware, it's also possible other spells would be painful if targets weren't caught off-guard and actively attempted to resist the effects before they set in. In other words, the pain could be an effect of trying to overpower any magic with sheer willpower, rather than in association with his particular spell.
Just some thoughts.
I've been thinking a lot about Jamil's unique magic and his upbringing. And Kalim.
Jamil's spell hurts people until they succumb to him, which makes me wonder if it's tied to how he was raised.
Jamil's parents hit him to make him comply right in front of Kalim, and Kalim’s response in Book 4 was to say, "I'm gonna hit Jamil."
Did Jamil's parents teach those boys that hurting people to make them do what you want is okay? Thoughts on Jamil's parents?
👀!Hello hello, thank you for this question!
It is true that Jamil's unique magic causes his target pain that seems to be beyond his control ("The pain will last as long as you resist") and that Jade's not-dissimilar unique magic has been described as painless, but I am not sure we have ever been given an explanation as to why!
Tumblr media
Jamil's parents have been discussed a bit earlier (below), and it is also true that they struck him in front of Kalim to emphasize the importance of doing what Kalim says:
One of the many interesting parts of the flashback is that, while we know that Kalim was standing there and watching as it happened, we do not know what his reaction was:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is it normal for servants to be hit at Kalim's mansion? Or was he horrified? Is that why he concludes the best way to respond to Jamil in Book 4 is with violence--because that is what he is used to seeing?
If he were horrified one would think he'd never want to see Jamil be hit again, but his response in Book 4 was to want to hit Jamil himself. Maybe he repressed the traumatic memory of what he saw? Did he realize that he was responding to Jamil in the same way that Jamil's parents used to when Jamil disobeyed, and that is why he wasn't able to go through with it, breaking the cycle?
Many questions, and one of many reasons to look forward to the manga adaptation of the Scarabia manga! 🐍 While the manga are not canon to the game, it will be interesting to see what direction they go in with Kalim 🦦
While the potential connection to Jamil's unique magic causing pain until the person obeys him (like his parents did to him?) is also interesting, we cannot say "his unique magic adapted to the environment in which he was raised" is canon without in-game confirmation, and it is all speculation 💦
But interestingly, after reviewing all the unique magics in the game...is Jamil's the only unique magic that intrinsically involves pain? 📝
Tumblr media
Deuce's unique magic is designed to cause its target damage, so maybe his as well? 📝 But it is also a defensive form of magic that does not allow him to hurt anyone unless they have already hurt him, first.
In order to compare to Jamil's we might need Ace hitting Deuce with multiple spells until he has stored up enough power to use Bet the Limit, and then aiming Deuce at somebody else, turning him into a human cannon (would that work? 🧐).
Tumblr media
While unique magics like Vil's have the potential to cause harm, Vil explicitly says that it can produce positive effects as well--it is not inherently violent beyond his control, like Jamil's.
Leona's can also cause damage by design, but in theory could he also maybe do things like make dried fruits?
Tumblr media
Sebek's causes pain when cast, but to himself, as he has yet to fully master it. Ruggie's can cause pain if he wishes but he has the option to choose, where it seems Jamil does not...very interesting to think about!

Why your fave deserves their event card, Coral Sea edition
Jade
There can be only one. We've known this since the Scalding Sands event. And, in terms of event SSRs, he was due:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus
Has no upcoming cards to look forward to (birthday, clubwear, overblot, Halloween, New Year's), and still won't catch up to the current card count of some characters still waiting on those.
Riddle
Sole holder of the second lowest (RIP Silver) card count currently at 17, vs as many as 22 (Jamil).
Rook
He's just a silly little guy. There are worse options.
