study tips for when you have ADHD and your brain feels like a crusty old sponge left stagnating in dishwater
DISCLAIMER: i did not come up with these ideas; these are just strategies I find work well for me! not every approach will work for everyone! it was very much a 'trial and error' (and error and error and error, etc.) process to find what works for me!
fake it 'til you make it
this might sound silly at first, but I'm going to need you to create a fake persona. this "worksona" is an incredibly productive and attentive character in a play/movie/tv show. they are smart and laser-focused. you can even give this person another name or backstory! whenever you need to focus, just imagine stepping into character and try to give it your best performance.
body doubling
grab a friend, a parent, a sibling, your cat, etc. kindly ask them to exist in the same space as you. you don't even have to look at one another or talk to one another. in a pinch, you can even use a stuffed animal or a mirror! i've heard that "study with me" livestreams on youtube can also be really helpful for some people!
change the vibe
change your surroundings. when I can't focus, altering my environment helps to introduce novelty, which then gives me the dopamine I need to keep going. for instance, let's say you've got a really boring thing you have to do and your brain is just not letting you do it. first, remember that it's okay; it's normal, and you don't have to feel ashamed or unproductive for not being able to do your tasks (remember, the idea that so-called "unproductivity" is in some way wrong is nothing more than a capitalist & industrialist lie). next, take your little workstation somewhere else. it could even be to the floor!! personally, i climb under my desk with my laptop and write papers from there when i can't focus!
hope this helps!! <3

Language learning
As someone who has ADHD it has always been the case that the way that work for the typical average person does not work for me. I have learned this again while learning korean. Now i am trying to come up with my own learning strategy and study plan so that it makes it easier for me.

I started learning Korean
About 2 Months ago I started learning Korean. There are several reasons for that one of them is that find learning languages very fun and fascinated if even sometimes it is difficult. Another Reason is that i love the way that Korean sounds and how word are being pronounced. I also find Korean culture quite fascinating and rich. I have being studying Korean in my free time and on weekends. Sometimes it is hard for me to do it in my free because I have ADHD und finding the motivation to do anything is quite difficult sometimes. I wanted to become more active again here and share my study progress and such things.
wish me Luck

so well just a really quick question: I have exams in like a week(?) and I’m on holidays where I’m supposed to be studying but I just absolutely have no motivation and don’t feel like doing anything. The thought of studying alone is exhausting. Is this an… adhd thing or…? Honestly just waiting for the panic train to smack me in the face somewhere next week to force myself into a studying mood haha yep :D

Yes, that’s absolutely an ADHD thing! A symptom of ADHD is executive dysfunction, which means that we have trouble with motivation and starting tasks, especially boring ones.
It’s also very much an ADHD thing to only start working just before the deadline, because the sudden pressure kickstarts our brains.

My brain, having a meltdown like a toddler: I just can’t do it! I don’t want to !! I can’t!!
Me, parenting my tired toddler brain: Take a deep breath, it’s going to be ok. We don’t have to do everything today that’s overwhelming you. Let’s pick the most important thing to work on, ok? What’s the smallest step we can do to work towards that?
My toddler brain, wiping away tears: Um, I think we should…open up the important spreadsheet and look at the first row.
Me, parenting my tired toddler brain: Great! Let’s do that, and then we can have a popsicle, ok?
My toddler brain: *nods through drying tears, upset, but cooperative*

i’m proud of you for making this important phone call.
i’m proud of you for studying for that subject.
i’m proud of you for saying hello and thank you.
i’m so proud of you for ordering that one meal.
i’m proud of you for raising your hand in class.
i’m proud of you for asking questions.
i’m proud of you for getting out of bed and brushing your teeth.
i’m proud of you for eating and drinking something.
i’m proud of you for doing that one thing you procrastinated starting because you were scared.
i’m proud of you for being friendly and kind even though you’re anxious.

to ADHD students:
• I’m proud of you. The education system works against us at every turn but you’re still hanging in there, and that’s amazing.
• Long term goals are lovely but they won’t motivate you. ADHD brains know two times: now and not now. Long term goals fall under “not now”, so if you try to use them to motivate yourself your brain won’t buy it. Some things that help me get motivated: using coloured pens, bringing a tasty drink like juice or pop to my desk, playing music I can sing along to.
• Get. Diagnosed. With an official diagnosis, you can access accommodations through your school. You don’t have to struggle through school being held to neurotypical standards. You can get things like extra time on tests, extensions on assignments, access to digital copies of textbooks so you can use text-to-speech software, the ability to write tests and exams in a smaller room with fewer distractions, noise cancelling headphones during tests. I live in Ontario so I can’t guarantee all of these things in other places, but you’ll never know what accommodations are available to you until you apply for them.
• Work for the amount of time that you can. You can only handle five minutes? Do work for those five minutes. You can stretch it out to fifteen minutes today? Awesome! It’s excruciating for us to get work done without it being a crisis, I know. But doing work in small increments every day goes a long way. Doing nothing because you can’t work as long as a neurotypical is just going to leave you with more work to do the night before.
• Keep fidgets and/or stim toys at your desk. If you get overwhelmed or can’t focus, grab a fidget and allow yourself to just sit and fidget for a little bit. Tactile stim toys are my favourite since they’re very grounding for me.
• Try not to beat yourself up for what you didn’t get done earlier. This is a hard one but it’s so so hard to get anything done while you’re upset with yourself, especially for us ADHDers who get easily caught up in emotions. You have a disability. It’s not your fault that you couldn’t get it done earlier. You’re working on it now and that’s what’s important.

food and rest isn’t earned. please stop beating yourself up and overworking yourself so that you feel you ‘deserve’ to eat or rest. it’s a basic necessity, you don’t need an excuse to do it. if you wake up late, or don’t do anything, guess what ? you still deserve to rest. if you slip up on your healthy eating and eat something unhealthy, guess what? you still deserve to eat. please take care of your basic needs.
