to me it’s not just that eiffel calls hera pet names, it’s when he does it. because it isn’t in lighthearted moments; it isn’t when they’re hanging out and goofing around. eiffel calls her baby after he almost dies, when he’s trying to get through to her during hilbert’s mutiny, when she tells him she’s glad he’s back after he was stranded in deep space, when he needs to make sure she’s okay, and he calls her darling when he’s worried about her, when he needs her to know that he’s there for her, and that he trusts her, more than anything. it strikes me the way it does because it’s sincere. it’s a reassurance.
