Some more designs

This time with Tailwind, Kestrel, and Hailstorm. Chameleon isn't featured like I said he would be because I decided I would be making a separate post on not just him but his shapes as well.

Tailwind

We don't really know much about Tailwind themself, other than what personality we see written in their writing and bits about themself they've given us, like how they don't know what's pretty or not, they don't care for fashion, and they're a swordsmith. As well as their feelings towards their brother, Canyon. Despite believing they are just a dragon who so happens to be related to Tailwind, in Canyon's final moments, Tailwind gifted him throwing daggers and armor in the arena. I like to head canon that Tailwind is a greatly intelligent individual, but not in like math or anything, just with socializing. They avoid it at all costs, but they know the ins and outs of it and how to stay off someones bad side ( example: Queen Firestorm ). I hc them as a nonbinary aromantic lesbian who uses strictly they/them only. The goggles on their head is not to strain their eyes during work, and the mask is to not inhale any metal debrie in the air while they work. Nothing in their design for symbolism, just a lighter shade than their brother. Though, if you think of smth in their design that has symbolism, I'd love to hear.

Kestrel

Die, stay dead, forever / hj. I hated Kestrel as a dragon, but I love her as a character. There's a lot you can do with her ( if she wasn't yk, dead, but that's we have fanfiction for ). If she hadn't died, imagine how Escaping Peril would have been like, or Peril's character by herself. I still don't think Kestrel and Peril would have gotten along if they got to have their "mother-daughter" time. Kestrel would be too pushy with things, maybe even want to use Peril to scare people a little to get what she wanted. But maybe not, because it seemed she did have a soft side, deep, deep, DEEP down for Peril and the DoD. Peril would not be comfortable with her pushinus and would want to avoid her for it, and if Kestrel did start using her to scare dragons, Peril would be getting reminded of Scarlet. For her design, I made her color pallette using the brown colors off both Sky and Peril. In the gn, she's just this plain red, but in the books, she's the color of rust. I liked the idea of rust, but I love brown skywings. I think when I design Soar, he'll have rust colors, so it's obvious we're their Offspring get their bronze and brown colors.

Hailstorm / Pyrite / Sapphire

I love Hailstorm and Pyrite a lot. ( I wanna share my hc about them here. They are plural, genderfluid, bigender, and abrosexual. ) They're so fascinating, two dragons in one. ( technically not ). After the events of the books, I like to think that after Hailstorm moved back into the tribe, they didn't quite like it. Nothing here sat with them the right way anymore, and it never would. The cold felt cold, the wind had a shiver, and the dragons' true colors really started to show to Hailstorm. And man, Tundra would be insufferable to Hailstorm now. She would never shut up about how Winter ruined everything for the family. They did not want to be Icewing. They wanted fire again. They wanted warmth again. So Hailstorm hits the road to Sanctuary and asks Winter for the Pyrite enchantment. ( of course, with all their memory intact. ). Hailstorm was a noble dragon, and a noble dragon like him did not want to live by Icewing noble standards. The abuse was enough for them. Hailstorm changed his name, but not to Pyrite, because they were no longer Fools gold. They were Sapphire. Let's go back to Hailstorm for a second. When thinking of their new name, they decided to rewrite the enchanted a little. Pyrite could still be conscious alongside Hailstorms conscious. Together, they choose Sapphire. Sapphire represents royalty, faithfulness, sincerity, and truth. All the things both of them wanted. All their memories are together. Together, they are Sapphire, and that's how they wanted it to be. For the bodies, Sapphire picks whatever body they feel more connected to in the moment.

Glinda mentions to Elphaba how Fiyero can't stop thinking about that moment in Dillamond's class, or that he's having thoughts in general and how it worries her because it's not something she's used to from him (which is him thinking about actual things), in contrast to Elphaba, who doesn't seem all that bothered and, even more so interested in the manner when Fiyero brings up how he can't stop thinking about when they rescued the lion cub. I don't know about everyone else but for me, even with this scene probably being added for lighthearted value, I also see it as another piece in the puzzle cementing how Fiyero's and Glinda's actions will, eventually, either pull them closer or further away from Elphaba. I lowkey don't like it when people act surprised or confused as to why Glinda was spelled or get annoyed that Fiyero is in her place but I, personally, don't think she would have helped in that moment, specifically in the movie.

Prior to the train scene, Glinda is shown to, not only, be completely rude and spoiled (as shown with her literally fainting over not getting her way), when in class, she publicly points out Dillamond's inability to pronounce her name correctly even though it's an obvious struggle, parading in front of the class how easier it was for her other teachers to do it, then being dismissive during the rest of the lesson when learning the importance of history and why to learn from it (correct me if I'm wrong, as it has been a minute since I've seen the movie). All that already tells me that she doesn't really care for the animals' cause, let alone enough to follow Elphaba and Fiyero into the woods after stealing the lion cub and I think, subconsciously, Elphaba knew that. In fact, I can only see Glinda trying to sway them to leave the cub and how what their new professor wanted to teach probably wasn't all that bad (not saying that she would want the cub to be harmed, just that she would try to rationalize what's going as we've seen her do before). This is the same woman who, after learning that the Wizard was a fraud and responsible for the missing and harmed animals, still tried to justify his actions and berated Elphaba for not "acting accordingly" to the news, but yet we still think she should have been there to save the lion cub? That she would have helped those animals alongside Fiyero and Elphaba? I think it could allude to how Glinda could/will be used to help further push propaganda for the Wizard, especially given how it benefits her socially, as figures of propaganda often don't think too hard, or enough to critique the system around them not because they aren't smart enough too (for the most part), but more so because they understand how their world works and understand the consequences that follow when stepping out of line.

You don't have to like Fiyeraba or even find Fiyero interesting, but to purposely ignore what the movie is presenting you is such a cop-out. Fiyero enters the film being a sort of anti-establishment-like character, caring little if he gets kicked out of Shiz for breaking the rules, or just hardly caring in general (something Elphaba calls him out for), and so on. Why wouldn't he be down to rescue the lion? Even if it was to just feed his rebellious streak, he still would have gone, but when he and Elphaba meet, he's on a talking horse and they are conversing like lifelong friends. That might add another layer to the pair saving the lion. Even if he wasn't on the same level as Elphaba at that moment, the train scene shows that it had a profound impact on him that he couldn't shake. I think, had he been presented with the choice of joining Elphaba or staying, he would have gone, not only for her but also because he now knows that the Wizard is a fraud and most definitely wouldn't stand for what he [Oz] is doing. This is what sets him apart from Glinda which, isn't necessarily me hating on her but just stating facts. Glinda isn't/won't be willing to sacrifice her position and what it brings her, until it's too late (which is the tragedy of her character and her relationship with Elphaba), while Fiyero risks everything, even to some extent his own body (Scarecrow) and, in the end, gets to stand with Elphaba.

the roomies!!! i originally designed this ososan oc trio in full about a year ago to write on an rp blog. it's not really active rn, but i still want to talk and post about 'em, so here they are! just basic rundowns, but i'd be curious to hear which one (if any) is your fav of the three (feel free to leave it in the tags?? if u want!)

anzu:

i wanted to use orange as a character colour bc it's one that wasn't already used in the matsu rainbow, and i had a concept of a gyaru character named anzu kicking around in my head for a long time as well, so here we are. miwa from the mixer ep inspired the eyeshadow (orange rather than miwa's blue obv, to keep with her colour theme) and delinquent totoko's design inspired her ombre dyejob! i went with a blonde-to-orange look as a nod to anzu's namesake fruit (apricot).

the strands framing her face are split into 3 sections at the end (2/3 are grouped together and 1/3 flips in the other direction) which is a little nod to her being one of 3 siblings (eldest), as well as the "三" character used in her surname (mikado) meaning 3. the rest of her hairstyle is just because i thought it looked cute, though.

ososan's style is more simplified, but i wanted to convey makeup that was a little bold, but cute (long false lashes, eyeshadow, & and a soft pink or nude glossy lip). clothing-wise, she mixes and matches a few different substyles (agejo and onee are prominent, with some ane, tsuyome, and general old school gal influences as well?), with a particular fondness for animal prints, esp. tiger print. (that said, orange tiger print doesn't seem all that common in gyaru clothes, so in-universe i like to think that the top pictured above was originally a black-and-white zebra(?) stripe print she thrifted and dyed at home--close enough!)

her nails day to day are usually medium length since she has a lot of hobbies that involve her hands and anything longer makes those things a bit more cumbersome. sometimes they're decoden/bedazzled, sometimes they're just painted a cute colour/pattern, depends on the day! and i think she opts for press-ons over extensions for longer nails, since it's cheaper.

ran:

i'm just a bitch who loves purple, that's the reason for this one. i think the hime cut with shorter bangs is nice because you can showcase the eyebrows (i think eyebrows can really elevate a character design so i gave all 3 their own brow shape) without worrying about the lines for the eyebrows and bangs intersecting in an annoying way when you draw it. i like shorter, slightly sharp eyebrows like these because they're easy to draw, lol. i think they're usually furrowed like she's displeased with something, but that may just be her resting face. i also thought this blunter, sharper-looking cut (bold, standoffish) was a fun contrast to anzu's flippy half-updo (bright, bouncy) and yuzu's short, wavy hair (languid, relaxed).

5 piercings on each ear (2 spiked helix & 3 lobe) = 5 siblings including ran (4 older brothers). the other reason for this number of piercings was that her namesake flower (orchid) had--i thought--5 petals, but as it turns out i'm a fool, it's actually 3 petals (including the lip) and 3 sepals??? ah, well.

clothing-wise, influences from various punk/vkei styles alongside some rokku gyaru. (maybe anzu introduced her to this one?) this brash style is the total inverse of how she was expected to dress growing up. (when she and anzu first met, she was an OL with no piercings, undyed hair, and positively miserable, but that was a number of years ago now.) i'm really not reinventing the wheel with "small and angry", but y'know, we have fun here.

yuzu:

is teal distinct enough from blue to count as its own colour? i think so. for yuzu, i really loved the concept of a deadpan-looking character who is very much not the straightman, who in fact wants very badly to be the funnyman 99% of the time. that kind of straight-faced but silly comedic character is always really fun to me.

half-lidded/heavy-lidded eyes paired with thick brows are always a winner to me fsr, and i wanted to give her a more "handsome" looking face with a bit more of a defined jaw than you typically see on women in ososan. as a treat. i wanted her to look a bit like a mysterious prettyboy, but she's not actually mysterious, she's just a space cadet. (and very straightforward about her thoughts and feelings, saying them with little fuss or thought.) expectation vs reality, people deciding what you're like based on their own perception vs what you're actually like, etc. etc.

i don't have anything deep to say about her hairstyle, but maybe that's how yuzu would like it, what you see is what you get. (again, eyebrows vs hair... let that eyebrow scar that i gave her for no reason shine.) as for clothing, she prefers things that are easy to move around in, so her style is the most "matsuno"-like (t-shirts, hoodies, basketball shorts, sweats, etc.). in particular, she likes shirts with phrases, usually in english, that are funny or almost make sense but not quite ("for background visual gags" and "for the english speakers in the audience").
