Okay, I'm coming to you guys for this now because I am going out of my mind. I cannot, for the life of me, find good novels with a f/f romantic lead plot. Do they not exist? I've been reading what I can find but I am not enjoying them. It's to the point where I'm wondering if there is something wrong with me. So, I'm coming to all of you. I do not want YA. I get a little icked reading novels about girls my daughter's age. I prefer fantasy but will branch out into other genera's. I'm looking for something that is not a coming of age or a discovering the characters are gay. I just want two leads that are living their life and also happen to be lesbians. I cannot seem to find a story of women falling in love without it being politicized or demonized by either them or other characters in the book.

I've read The Priory of the Orange Tree (romance was decent but I felt most of the story dragged)

I've read You Can't Spell Tea Without Treason (the romance felt one dimensional)

I've read The Stars Too Fondly (the characters were all way too immature for being individuals with their doctorates)

Even Though I Knew The End (It felt like it was written as a hetero relationship that they just switched the pronouns to female in the editing phase)

Legends and Latte's and Bookshops and Bonedust ( I loved this one. Peek cozy fiction. Believable romance)

Noteworthy read is a Dowry of Blood but that was more poly than lesbian and there was a male involved.

Sorry to bug you, but I had a question: as someone who's full extent of knowledge re: Oz and Wicked is "I have seen the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie, and I've been told both that the books are super crazy and Dorothy's actually gay as hell, and also been told Wicked is the secret sad gay backstory of Glinda and Elphaba." I'm surprised to learn a) that Scarecrow was a real guy, b) he and Tin Man knew each other pre-Oz movie's story, and c) he apparently dated Elphaba, so my question is: is he a "her boyfriend until it turns out she was gay and the romance was doomed" boyfriend, or was I lied to about the nature of the story of Wicked being a sad lesbian backstory?

Oh boy, a lot to unpack here so let's see if we can break this down XD

Without getting into spoilers, it's important to know the book Wicked is a very, very different thing from the musical Wicked. I admittedly had never read any of the original Wizard of Oz books beyond the first one so I don't know anything about the whole "Dorothy is gay" thing but apparently that's true? I'll leave it to others who've actually read the series to verify on that.

My comics are solely focused on the musical adaptation of Wicked and such major plot points and characters are very different from the book, and if you'd like a break down, I'll post it under the spoiler below. Although I would recommend either waiting in eager anticipation for the movie to come out this November or find a Wicked bootleg slime tutorial on Youtube if you'd like to see the theater adaptation yourself. I highly recommend doing so.

Ok, so to break it down: Yes, both the Scarecrow and the Tin Man were actual people before they become the iconic figures we know and love (at least as far as the musical is concerned) And yes, Wicked is gay as hell, and though the musical isn't nearly as gay as the book, the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba that can absolutely be read as gay.

The Scarecrow, whose name is Fiyero, was a prince who initially dated Glinda but then things happen and he falls for Elphaba instead. He breaks off his engagement to Glinda to run off with Elphaba. The two have a steamy sexy duet together but tragically the relationship is bitterly short; the Wizard's guards take Fiyero prisoner and try to torture him for information on where Elphaba is hiding. In a desperate gambit to save his life, Elphaba casts a spell on him, which turns him into a scarecrow.

Also Fiyero and the Tin Man (who in the musical is Boq) went to university together so they sort of know each other. In fact, all four of them went to school together, which is where the majority of Act 1 of the musical takes place.

The book is very, very different: Tin Man (Nick Chopper) keeps his original backstory of getting his limbs chopped off by an enchanted axe and Fiyero dies (I can't remember exactly how but probably somewhere along the lines of "Wizard's guards capture him and beat him to death"). Obviously the musical changed these things to tie all the characters together and give it a bit of a happier ending.

A bottle of wine and three romcoms in, your earlier crisis is all but gone.

"I miss them." You hum absently back, voice a little muffled around the handful of your favourite fizzy sweets you'd just shoved into your mouth. "Does John have a work number?" Maddie probes, not looking up from where she currently paints her fingernails a pretty, pearlescent shade of blue. "Yeah. I try not to text him on it unless there's an emergency though. Or if he says he has time to talk." "Kate has one too. You think they're busy?" "I mean - she called you back this morning, no? They only ever call or text when they're inactive."

The look on Maddie's face is one you know all too well. You've seen it countless times over the years you've been friends, and it always spells disaster. Before you know it, she's got her phone in hand, camera open and pointed at where the two of you are piled together amongst chocolate wrappers and blankets.

"Hey, Katie! and John - you guys should watch this together." She chats brightly to the camera in that wonderfully animated chirp of hers. "We're just here watching romcoms because someone" You laugh softly, blushing as she pans the camera to where you sit drowning in one of John's old hoodies. "- was getting all up in her own head panicking. Don't worry John, I'm looking after her."

Kate's phone pings as she and John sit around a table in a dingy bar in some cold, far off city. Of course, she can't tell either you, or her own wife, that they're coming home tomorrow - just incase the signal gets intercepted. It won't, but she can't try her luck and risk leaving two of her favourite women without their partners.

"It's Maddie." She muses, one dirty blonde eyebrow raised in confusion as she swipes open the video attachment her wife had sent. John looks up at her over the condensed rim of his beer bottle, his own eyebrows furrowing.

"The girls are together." Kate continues, relief painting her tone as she places her phone on the table between them, allowing John to see the grainy video too. "- because someone was getting all up in her own head panicking. Don't worry John, I'm looking after her." Price chuffs at Maddie's words, but the way his eyes soften when he sees your blushing pink face, the way his hoodie drapes over you, is almost impossible to miss. "Anyways! We'll see you soon! Be safe - we love you!"

Okay, if you were asked who are in Merlin BBC & Voltron that you can see based on canon that are gay/bi/pan/demi, which characters are they? Why?

BBC Merlin

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

Keith: with his lack of interest in women, he can only be gay. That man looks at no one quite the same as he looks at Lance. what the hell was the whole bonding thing if not a hint for post canon klance? Sorry, not sorry XD rivals to best friends to lovers.

Shiro: probably the only character in my entire history of shipping that I would unqueer without feeling bad about it. I know he's gay, I just don't really see it in the writing. Of course there aren't always clear signs that someone is gay which is why this is good rep actually (+he's married), but you asked me for proof in the show and all I see is that this man is a dad. That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.

Okay okay I had no damn Idea that a lot of men found mk11 Fujin attractive (Mostly because I wasn't all that into MK11 at first nor aftermath cause college and all that)

But a lot of people believe that Fujin has been genderswapped because Kung lao mentions Raiden's SISTER.

And I personally just don't like when companies gender swap characters but only because sometimes they either change their whole personality or they only do it to please a certain group of people rather than the character or the story or the lore and all of that whatever.

I personally like Fujin as a dude because there's honestly not that many dudes who show as much compassion for others as well as be a bad ass at the sametime... So when I found out that he possibly could be a woman in the new timeline I was and still kind of slightly annoyed because hell I don't know I like seeing a guy that can kick ass as well as be compassionate and kind and be sassy. THAT'S HOT!

But now thinking they may gender swap him it just makes me a little sad because it makes me think they are either doing it because of his personality or because of men thirsting after him but then being like "but I don't like men/I'm not gay". Like bish you can find men attractive without being gay. Just like how women can find woman attractive without being lesbians and Asexual people can find people in general attractive without wanting to have sex with them or have a relationship with them.

But I don't know. This was kind of the reason why I was chill about Fujin not being in the game because they are already doing some wacky shit and shit that didn't really need to be changed but they did it anyway because :T... Hell I don't know

Hi JD! Im curious how other queer DMs handle this so I thought I'd ask you.

How do you determine sexuality and queerness for your NPCs?

I used to do it in a go with the flow method, which still works for unplanned NPCs. But in my game we have a (consensual and very funny) high charisma lesbian barbarian bard who loves to flirt with NPCs. I kinda realized that for realism and some strategic cockblocking on my part I needed to work out my NPCs sexualities out beforehand, and I started doing it with everybody.

I found it helps me keep in mind other kinds of queerness besides my own, but I also recognize it is ridiculous and no one should do it how I do lmao.

Give me details on how you make your little guys (gender neutral) queer pls.

i don't know how helpful my approach will be for you, mainly because i don't have a PC in my game who flirts with everybody. if i did, i might need to think about this a bit differently. but i have PCs that pick one NPC and decide "im gonna marry you one day" and then they DO lmao, so it's easier in a sense.

also! disclaimer that, you know, the characters we create and roleplay are very much reflections of ourselves, and in my case, that means they are all being filtered through an aspec lens. i often DON'T think about an NPC's sexuality when i'm creating them because sometimes i forget that sexuality is something i should think about, lmao. this does depend, though, and there have been cases where i knew an NPC's sexuality from the jump.

but yeah, every NPC i make is queer. that's just the truth about the world i'm running. gender and sexuality have way more nuance and understanding in the fantasy world i am creating with my queer friends, on every level of that creation. so even if i don't know what exact variety or label an NPC identifies with, none of them are what we would consider cishet in our real world. like, in my game, most people aren't assigned a gender at birth, or if they are, it's understood to be flexible by most people. polyamory is a norm that is accepted. etc etc.

all of that being said! because of all of these things, i tend to have an understanding of my NPCs' queerness that is very fluid and malleable. very few things wrt their queerness are set in stone or defined in strict terms. also, i can't really think of a situation (in the case of my game and my players) where a PC would express romantic interest in an NPC and i would shut that down over meta expectations i had about that NPC's sexuality. like, that just wouldn't occur to me. in the cases where my PCs have shown interest in NPCs, the NPCs have reciprocated. because that's fun and it's what my players want to do. again, this has only happened a couple of times in my game, so it's easy for me to adapt that way.

obviously, this is where our games probably differ, since you have a flirty PC. if i had a PC who flirted with everyone, i would probably talk to the player about expectations. is that just part of the PC's personality that is fun for the player to engage with, or does the player want/expect reciprocation when it's applicable? i am so bad IRL at combing through the intricacies of attraction and sexuality lol that i would probably need my player to spell it out for me if they were ACTUALLY pursuing an NPC romantically, or just flirting because it's fun. and either way, cool, the NPCs in my queer-positive, nuanced and fluid world would probably be open to it. if a PC was trying to form a romantic connection / relationship with an NPC, cool, whatever that NPC's sexuality is just. includes that PC now lol. and if it's just for-fun flirtiness, cool, NPCs in this world are mostly gonna be open to for-fun flirtiness without expectation that it's going somewhere. (unless they just hate being flirted with, which has to do with personality more than sexuality, you know?)

Dick Fight Island - I'm not too big into Yaoi, and even if there is fan-made content of my favorite gay pairings, I don't actively seek it out. Yes, that is the tile of this manga that I have read through with my own eyes. This is one of the only times I have read anything classified as erotica because this manga is bizarrely explicit. Like the title suggests, every 4 years 8 men from 8 different islands compete in a battle royal suited in scantly clad armor and fight against each other using their armored genitals as blunt objects. Whichever contestant comes out on top is crowned the new king of all the islands but whoever cums first during each match loses. Dick Fight Island is a very short read considering it's only 2 volumes and I greatly enjoyed it. I think it's empowering that something so bizarre and erotic is written and illustrated by a woman. I liked that this manga didn't only just have a cast of conventionally attractive homosexual men each catered to a specific arc type but there were also lesbian characters present in the story. I loved that this manga hit all bases when creating a story involving LGBT characters and wasn't just another erotic manga tailored specifically to fujoshi's.

Golden Kamuy (anime) - After reading through the manga I immediately jumped into watching the anime adaptation of Golden Kamuy and wanted to quickly catch up since I knew my favorite character would be introduced in season 4 coming up in October. I didn't have extremely high expectations for the anime and I could certainly say it's not the greatest adaptation but it's not the worst either. I would strongly suggest reading Golden Kamuy over watching it because this adaptation just can't do the justice this manga deserves, I can not even begin to understand the existence of Golden Kamuy anime onlys. There are probably a few scenes I enjoyed seeing animated but that was about it. The pacing of the first season is very inadequate and some of the chapters are either not adapted at all or they have their own separate OVA which makes it difficult for me to recall when certain events happened in the manga. Things don't start to pick up in the anime until season 3 which I find unfortunate because that's at least 24 episodes that you have to invest in before it gets better. At that point, I would just strongly advise reading the manga because I greatly enjoyed the early chapters in Golden Kamuy when I began to start reading it vigorously every day.

Panty and Stocking - When I heard that Panty and Stocking would be receiving its long-awaited second season I felt a deep sense of dread fill my body, that being said I took it upon myself to sit down and actually make my way through this anime from start to finish. I don't think I have ever sat through anything that gave me such intense secondhand embarrassment. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to force myself to watch this anime but I don't believe in brushing things off without fully examining them at least once. After watching my way through PSG, I strongly feel like I am the only person who has watched the source material. I refuse to believe the cult following for this anime is comprised of individuals that actually watched it. It makes my heart sink so deeply when a lot of animated media is heavily praised solely for its art and animation but is actually extremely lacking in other aspects such as writing, and character development or is just straight-up questionable. I feel like PSG gets a free pass for its awful offensive sexual humor because "the art style is cool" and I feel that's all people talk about when discussing their infatuation with this anime. I will admit I do like the art style of PSG but I feel like the "PSG art style" is more diverse than people make it out to be because there are actually really cool-looking designs and characters outside of the main 2 protagonists. I think another show that easily suffers this same problem is the Power Puff Girls where there is an obvious cast of diverse character designs but the perception of the "PPG art style" outside of the 3 main protagonists is non-existent. If I was to give some credit to PSG where it's due is that there is slight character development, yay! I am not a fan of Panty at all and her character makes me very uncomfortable but I did find some enjoyment in watching her get character development during the last arc of the first season. Even though both Panty and Stocking are dumb and rotten as hell it's clear Stocking is slightly more mature and seeing each of the sisters go through a brief period where they split up leaving Panty to do a lot of self-reflection, it's actually good? I would like to also add that PSG has a very good English dub and is probably one of the top English dubs I have heard when watching anime without subtitles. I don't think I will continue PSG if the second season ever comes out and I am certainly not ready for the culture war that will spawn from the second half of this anime when it finally drops but I was willing to give PSG a try since it is wildly popular.

Catherine Full Body - I think after playing a few games developed by Atlus I wanted to give Catherine Full Body a try. Unlike the previous games I have played by Atlus, Cathrine is a puzzle game and not an RPG. Catherine also includes a lot of elements similar to dating sims but I think I knew right away this game was more profound than that. At first, I deeply regretted buying this game at 50% off on the Nintendo Switch e-shop. I could not believe the horrible choices the protagonist made during the first part of the story. I'm easily made uncomfortable by gendered expectations in heterosexual relationships and Cathrine deals with this a lot but not in a way I would have ever expected. My feelings for this game immediately did a 180 when the character Rin was introduced into the story. I ended up appreciating this game an awful lot and think Cathrine has some of the best character development I've witnessed in media. There are a total of 13 endings in this game and so far I have played through and achieved one, which is Rin's true ending. Out of the 3 "Cathrines" you can pursue I went out of my way to begin a relationship with Rin. Apparently choosing Rin requires some amount of effort compared to Kathrine or Cathrine and I had no idea how careful you have to be when selecting dialogue options in order to begin her route because Rin's route felt so natural and effortless to me in this aspect. I feel like I had this unique experience while playing because my personal attraction is regardless of gender and I would have never guessed the biggest moment in Cathrine Full Body is when Rin is revealed to be a transgender woman. I feel that this aspect of Rin's character is so important and makes her probably the most optimal choice when pursuing a relationship with any of the characters. Out of the 3 women in Vincent's life that he has tragically wrapped himself up with, Rin is the most accepting of Vincent. Rin's open-minded nature has such a positive impact on Vincent's character development and growth as a person. I feel like there is a lot to be said about how the most accepting woman in Vincent's life that sees him for who he is regardless of his flaws, is in fact a trans woman. Rin's true ending is so meaningful to me and I think Vincent truthfully lives a happy life with her because their relationship isn't shaped by heteronormative expectations. Cathrine Full Body is so much more than just "the sex game" and has a very honest depiction of intimate relationships, commitment, and making the right choice all while some supernatural elements are mixed in.
