because a) some those comics fuck with awing dexterity and stamina b) there's a good chance shit is out of context or simply misrepresented (innocently, humorously, ignorantly or maliciously) and c) you know the beats/endings of tons of shit, but it doesn't impede your enjoyment of it, now does it? sure it's nice to go in spoiler free, but if the gimmick of spoiling material is all a piece of media has, then that piece of media is meritless. you knew who luke skywalker's father was before you saw the movie. is it still worth watching? you knew romeo and juliet died before you read the play. is it still worth reading? do you not want to go on a journey? do you not want to feel something? do you not want to commiserate about the human experience through art? a wiki will never be comprehensive enough to cover everything you would have read or seen yourself--it can't be, not without being the thing itself. even then, you still miss the things not on the page/screen, the things that are only implied, the things that go unstated, or else conspicuously omitted. don't talk to me about shit haunting the narrative if the only haunting you've ever been apart of was your passing despite your dogshit analysis skills haunting the conscience of your eng 101 adjunct professor in perpetual fear of losing their contract and being relocated from their car to under a bridge by demanding college students demonstrate basic reading comprehension, critical thinking, and coherent argumentative skills. boast about killing the author? my friend, you are cain advancing in the fields, skulking, stepping in abel's footprints, filled with murderous intent, with nothing but the chinese telephone-equivalent of a description of a weapon cutting into your soft palms.

I just wrote a very long rant and deleted it again but!! if any of you EVER have even a tiny bit of imposter syndrome when it comes to academic writing I am very happy to inform you that you absolutely do not need any of that, because as I've witnessed countless times by now, even some professors (especially professors) do not know how to use citation software but will also refuse to put any bibliographic information into the WIP document, and instead rely on their asistant's psychic powers to figure out what needs to go into the bibliography of their texts.

“Mama!”

Isabel turns from the stove and the soup she stirs upon it - perfect for the cold, rainy weather they had woken up to. She cannot she her daughter in the other room but she instinctively faces the sound of her voice like she can.

“What is it, darling?” she calls back.

“There’s a stranger coming up to the house!”

Eyebrows lower as Isabel thoughtlessly runs her hands down the length of her apron. In the other room, she finds Lucy draped over the back of the sofa, peeking through the curtains. Isabel moves in behind her, one knee pressing into the cushion as she leans in to follow her gaze. Her blood instantly runs cold.

Vance. Or rather, as he had revealed to her just before she discovered the baby growing inside her, Ulysses, the sea sorcerer. The months she had spent with him had been some of the best she had ever had, short of the five years she had with Lucy now. He was handsome, charismatic, deliciously reckless. He brought a certain spark into what was previously a rather dull simple life. But despite the way he swept her up into a life so far removed from the one she lived before him, she had feared nothing until the moment he gifted her with the truth. Even then, it was more apprehension than fear until that positive pregnancy test…

It was only in that moment that she even thought of ending things between them. He wasn’t safe for the child. Maybe he wasn’t safe for Isabel either.

She had originally contemplated taking the child and traveling inland. Vance wouldn’t have followed her that far from the sea and the less he and Lucy knew, the better in her mind, but she couldn’t go through with it. He had never truly done anything wrong save for exist as he truly was in a world that cared little for the things they did not understand. He deserved to know about his child. To her relief, he even agreed to keep his distance.

There was always a part of her that questioned if they truly made the right decision, even now as she watched him approach and steeled herself for the fight she was sure was coming. After all, if Lucy was half him, would she not develop some of his more…magical traits at some point? She had taken to keeping Lucy away from the ocean despite the way she loved it, hoping to at least slow the emergence of anything inexplicable but she knew nothing of all this. Was it even something she could control? The answers lied with Vance, but so did all the danger.

“Oh, it’s nothing, honey. Just someone here to see Mama real quick. Why don’t you go upstairs and play until dinner’s done? It’s just going to be boring old grown up talk. I promise.”

Isabel takes the child’s face in her hands and presses a quick kiss to her nose before moving her to the floor. Despite Lucy’s protests, she sends her upstairs and steps out onto the covered porch, her back pressing into the door as she closes it behind her.

“So much for our agreement, huh?”
