The style is one in which starters are the characters talking to their "mun" or players, which is common when "voice-testing" a character to possibly app {apply} into a future {typically pan-fandom, or cross-canon across multiple fan-bases} DWrp {Dreamwidth.org} rp game. Games usually have their own settings, styles and rules and you should carefully consider them before applying to any. (I eventually ended up applying for Koushiro at a DigiAdv{s}-centric game that ended up eventually dying...)

I whited out a few parts to give the former Tai-mun a bit of privacy, but to my knowledge I haven't seen them as active since. Hopefully they won't mind me posting just one old thread between us, because it was really really fun to try back then! Even playing Koushiro was still really fun, despite it being for a very short timeframe of a couple years + even if I never found an active Taichi player {+in a close in age range} to me since.

This was BEFORE Tri had fully aired or before Kokuhaku was even announced, so Koushiro has a small mix of icons I'm using, but sometimes I switch between "canon-points" of early Adventure!Koushiro or late, OWG era or post-02 but pre-epilogue!Koushiro. Tri!Koushiro wasn't even animated more animatedly yet (and much later had very limited appearance in Saikai, etc.), so I was mainly relying on my head-canons for a Koushiro that appears between 2002 and the epilogue, but I often imagined Koushiro of those ages still sticking very close to both 02 and Tri looks. {I did like Tri giving Koushiro back slightly spikier hair, because that was how I imagined Koushiro during in-between years too.} Muns could later go back and update some icons, so some default icons may later change as well. {That's how a Tri!Taichi icon shows here even though it's 2k12}

Also, its very fun because you can personalize your responses even using things like subject headers way better than on this kind of site, and sometimes muns leave you really fun and kind messages that make you want to cry so you try to show them appreciation in turn!!!

HAPPY ODAIBA DAY! I just published a new chapter of my digimon fanfic, Infinite Possibilities! Read it on AO3 or FFN!

In today's chapter, Koushiro gives Eimi background info on the relationship between the Chosen and the Bureau, and we see the lingering damage from the events of Tri. I was so interested in thinking up what happened to the 02 kids afterward, I hope I can expand those ideas into a full fic someday.

I'm so excited, because things really start to pick up next chapter, when Hikari and Miyako tell the villages of baby digimon what happened to their missing friends.

Fic Summary:

As more people meet their digimon partners, the challenges of digimon and humans coexisting on earth cannot be ignored. College student Anami Eimi begins her career in digimon research, hoping to help digimon and humans understand one another. When she discovers caged digimon in her new lab, she contacts the Japanese Chosen, setting off a chain of events that force the Chosen and their digimon to reevaluate the dynamics of their partnership.

This fic is set pre and post Kizuna, and is a mostly canon compliant expansion. It's a three phase story, the first starring OC Anami Eimi, then Izumi Koushiro, then Yagami Hikari. It explores the realities, challenges, and politics of digimon living on earth, and the nature of the Chosen/digimon partnership.

Can the Chosen and their digimon find the infinite possibilities that will sustain their partnerships into adulthood?

There are mentions of couples in this fic, but it's action/world expansion/plot driven, not a romance.

Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon

Wow...somehow this one just completely fell off my radar, otherwise I would have watched it a long time ago lol. I seriously thought I was all caught up with pre-Tamers anime until I saw this on the 02 TV Tropes and was like "oop..." It was a good surprise though, I can never get enough of these Mamoru Hosoda style shorts! (Looks like he didn't actually work on this one though).

I watched this dubbed first to take screenshots and then subbed. It's hard to find a non-crunchy version of the subbed short. The OG Japanese was a lot stronger imo because, as usual, the dub ruined some stuff with it's jokey tone and music choices. Still decently faithful though. Full thoughts below.

So this is like a midquel, I guess. I don't know if there's an exact place within 02 I was supposed to watch this, but I didn't feel like my immersion was wrecked or anything haha.

While the aesthetic of the short was great, I felt the story was pretty redundant and eye-roll worthy. "Oh Omegamon/Omnimon is back for some contrived reason and the OG chosen children's digimon can't defeat him like they did last time...for some contrived reason. This looks like a job for the 02 protagonists!" Whatever, it doesn't have to be deep to be fun.

The early 2000s CG looked pretty good actually. I thought it added a fun otherworldliness to the Kuramon.

Kuramon look a lot like Takodachi (Hololive fans know what's up). I wonder if there was some inspiration there on a subliminal level.

I wonder if Daisuke's character designer intended him to be from a southern part of Japan. His tan skin sticks out more in this art style.

I feel like Diaboromon got uglier somehow compared to Our War Game lol. Armagemon's design was deliciously creepy though. He looked like something out of an Alien movie. His entrance was epic and probably would have freaked me out a lot as a kid. Weirdly, they never actually said Armagemon's name so I just assumed it was Diaboromon until I googled it just now lol

Sora and Mimi were like two sides of the same coin in this. Mimi was useless, but in a delightful way. Sora was useless, but in a boring way lol. Seriously, she didn't need to come all the way home from her tennis club trip to just go "I'm here!" and then do nothing. I'm not saying there was much she could do anyway, but I get really pissed that they never gave her character a real point aside from "bland love interest" in any Digimon show/movie.

Loved Mimi's interactions with Koushiro. Their awkward "we're in the same friend group but have nothing in common" chemistry is so fun.

Yamato seemed extra cool with his rings and stoicism. I do kind of wish he and Taichi got a little more dialogue though.

Really didn't like the direction of the fights inside the internet. They were either animated too up close or too distant so I felt like I couldn't really follow what was going on half the time. Also, the choreography wasn't that inspired. The IRL fight at least had a cool Evangelion vibe going for it. The harbor was a really aesthetic setting for a final fight.

I've started shipping DaiKen for funsies (there's some really cute fanart) so it was nice seeing them together in the elevated art style hehe.

It's funny how the digimon sizing suddenly changes when we're in movie-mode. Angemon and Angewomon were huge in this! I was excited to see the 02 digimon, but they mostly looked the same as they looked in the show tbh.

The Shibuya vibes, complete with Hachiko statue, were fun. Was 02 set in Tokyo? I honestly don't remember...

Seeing all those children running around at night without any worries about safety...must be nice, Japan.

When Omegamon "ran out of energy," I had the thought of like "can a jogress digimon die in the real world or would they always just de-digivolve??" I guess they'd never go that far for plot reasons anyways

Imperialdramon gets a new mode! Paladin mode, according to Google. Were these names in the credits or did they just decide things later for the TCG or something...?

We got the 02 theme inserted towards the end and even the OG show's theme as a ring tone. Really cute touch. (I was a little triggered to hear Bolero again for the millionth time though).

All in all I'm glad the 02 kids got their due in this style. Was it groundbreaking? No. Was it worth 30 minutes of my time? Absolutely!

I don't know if anyone is actually interested in this progress, but I figured I would start doing this at least once per week during November so that I can keep track.

@darcynne​ that’s all I needed as motivation to write my “Yamato as an Astronaut makes no fucking sense” meta so here it goes!

So ever since I found out, as a kid even, that in the 25 years after part, Yamato becomes an astronaut... I've had Questions. I guess I was supposed to go like "Wow he's an astronaut that's so cool wow!" but instead I just can't help thinking how much that clashes with his personality.

Yamato’s alignment is Chaotic.

Probably the most chaotic-inclined of all the original twelve children. Something that is even more clear in the Japanese dialogues, since he's, I think, the only character that never uses name honorifics. He also calls his dad "oyaji" (my old man), being the only character to use such a blunt term for his own father - a form of authority in his life. From a general standpoint, the way he reacts to stuff happening and acts as HE thinks is best and not abiding to social norms, that's the crux of any chaotic character; acting on their own reason and not caring what society expects of them - which is different from not caring whether others see him as emotionally vulnerable; he doesn't care if people think he's rude, but he cares if people think he's vulnerable (at least in the first season; in 02 he is much more in tune with his own emotions but he still doesn't care about following social norms).

But you'll tell me, he depended on being seen as a good older brother for Takeru, and this is a societal expectation he wanted to follow. And I'll tell you, this fucked Yamato up. The one way he pushed himself to follow social norms was by overcompensating for not being a part of Takeru's everyday life by being overly protective and losing his shit every time he lost sight of Takeru for 1.5 seconds. The worst part being how he became almost possessive over Takeru, feeling that anyone who simply becomes close with Takeru will eventually take him away from Yamato, therefore Takeru must not have other friends, Takeru only needs Yamato, Takeru is a helpless little baby that can't do anything on his own... that's all Yamato depended on on the idea that by "social norms" means he has to be a "good older brother". None of his methods showed how much he loved Takeru, because those methods were not him. I mean, he does love his brother, but his dependence on showing a "good big brother" façade pushed him to behaviours that go against his character and his expression. We see it much more clearly in 02, where he acts way more casual and open with his brother, now that he's at peace with his own self and emotions.

He is artistic, not a nerd.

Not that those two cannot combine. But in the show's case, the "nerdy" characters were clear: Koushiro and Jou in the first season, and Iori and Miyako (and Ken?) in the second. Yamato never expresses any curiosity to learn something further, to fully invest himself into reading and studying. He is much more a practical person; he plays music, he cooks, he loves spending free time with the people he cares about... we never see him lose himself in a book or a computer screen, absorbing every piece of information given to him.

Again, not that a person cannot be a book/information nerd and artistic at the same time. But Yamato is clearly only one of those. His passions are his music and his friends. Of course, interests can change from adolescence and into adulthood, but you don't just suddenly gain an interest for going down rabbit holes of research the moment you turn 18.

And most importantly, Yamato is a fictional character. Real people can have changes of heart at any moment, or because of the circumstances they grew up in, maybe they never got the chance to be nerdy until after a certain point in their lives. But Yamato is fictional, with every writing choice being deliberate. It was deliberate to not show him with his nose in a book, to not show him gaining interest in engines, to make him a reactionary pre-teen and teenager whom you cannot imagine ever willingly joining the armed forces.

He was traumatized by his parents' divorce, the separation from his mother and brother, and the limited time he got with his father due to the latter working overtime way too often.

Yamato spent almost the entirety of the first season feeling that if he doesn't act like a good older brother, then he is worthless and doesn't deserve being taken care of. That if he isn't of practical use to someone, then no-one will care about him. And being taken care of is something he longed for - every time his Crest of Friendship glows before the evolution sequence (because there are times that the evolution sequence just starts without the Crest glowing outside of it) is because he variably felt that someone else took him into consideration: Jou saving Takeru and telling Yamato he wasn't mad about Yamato being a Bitch at him; Pumpmon and Gotsumon protecting them from Vamdemon; Gabumon telling him that he'll follow and believe in him no matter what; Taichi saying he believed Yamato would come back for them. It's not just that he cares for his friends, it's that he also treasures others trusting and believing in him. His love language is Quality Time (and a bit of Acts of Service). He's not good with words, or personal gifts, and I'd also say physical touch but this may also be because of cultural differences between my culture and Japan's. In his goodbye to Gabumon, all he can do - after Gabumon requests it, no less - is play the harmonica for him one last time.

And it's that lack of quality time, the lack of confirmation that someone cares about him, that made him as closed-off and emotional as he is for the majority of the first season, that made him even wonder out loud why someone like him got the Crest of Friendship.

So, Yamato is a chaotic-aligned artist that loves spending time with his loved ones, and more often than not allows himself to act solely on his emotions.

Now let's make a small breakdown of what the job of an astronaut is like:

For JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, the requirements are an advanced degree in science as of education, and as of professional experience it's three years of work experiece in science or in the Japanese Self Defence Forces.

NASA requires experience in flying aircrafts, for JAXA it's not mandatory but it's certainly something that would help. Spacecrafts have a shit ton of machinery and technical stuff you need to learn about and be able to handle, especially if something starts going wrong.

From a technical standpoint, an astronaut is a type of soldier. They have to follow orders, have a very strict code that can literally mean life or death during a mission, etc. etc. And as said above, JAXA takes into consideration experience in armed forces. By definition, soldiers are of Lawful alignment, and simply cannot work by any other alignment.

It's a demanding profession, one that someone needs to dedicate a lot of time to, and if/when they are finally chosen for a mission, they could spend entire months in space with only video calls to their loved ones on Earth. There they instead practically live with whatever coworkers their agency chose for them, and the relationship between such coworkers can be only strictly professional because of the high demands of the work they do.

So an astronaut has to be a lawful-aligned science/engineer nerd that doesn't mind being away from loved ones for long periods of time and will NEVER allow their emotions to get the better of them.

... where the FUCK does Yamato fit in all this? The requirements of an astronaut go directly against EVERYTHING Yamato really is.

As I said, Yamato is a fictional character. It was the writers' choice to give him all the traits that make him incompatible for becoming an astronaut, it was their choice to keep those traits as he grew into a teenager, and it was their choice to eventually give him that profession, practically saying that everything Yamato was as a pre-teen and a teen vanished when he became an adult.

In real life, people can "change" or discover things about themselves as they grow up. But fiction almost NEVER portrays such realism, because that's not the point of fiction. The point of fiction is to give us pieces of a puzzle and for us to put them together. Sometimes the pieces are super easy to match; sometimes the Author takes our hands and pieces the puzzle together for us; sometimes it gets a little while for the pieces to reveal the edges so that we can connect them; sometimes we need to find pieces in other sources (behind the scenes material, interviews, etc) in order to complete the puzzle; sometimes the pieces don't fit together and don't make sense; and sometimes the Author breaks apart the pieces so that they can force connection among pieces that don't fit.

And in Yamato as an Astronaut's case, it's plain and clear the last case.

I have seen people trying to justify this writing choice for some reason, and nothing I've ever seen makes sense to me. The most common explanation is that Yamato is a romantic soul and wanted to go to space with Gabumon, and I'm like, he chose a profession that goes against everything he is, dedicated countless time and entire years of his life in preparation to become an astronaut, all because he had a dream of going somewhere SpecialTM with Gabumon? What if JAXA went like "How are we gonna send a Digimon to space we don't know shit about their physiology what purpose is he even gonna serve in the spacecraft what the FUCK Ishida-san"? How about, idk, climbing mount Everest or something?

I mean, I mentioned the fact that he was traumatized by how little time he had to spend with his family when he was young, because by becoming an astronaut he practically did the same with his own children. Do y'all think an astronaut gets more time with their kids than an overworked journalist?!

I am a musician myself, and though I discovered my love for music in my teens, I do not think that anyone who likes music in their teens has to become a musician. People’s interests change, and there’s a shit ton of difference between music as a hobby and music as your job. People who do the mistake of becoming professional musicians without loving being a professional musician come to the sad development of hating both music and their job.

But in any case, as I said, Yamato is a fictional character so it wouldn’t hurt anyone if they had him become a professional musician. It would be much more in harmony with his character traits, it would allow him to be as emotionally expressive as he was in 01 and 02, and depending on what exactly he did as a musician, it would allow him to spend more time with his kids.

I mean, you want something that looks FUCKING AWESOME for Cool Yamato’s very Cool Future Career? Think of this: Yamato is the lead singer/bassist of a famous J-rock group. They have a concert. The crowd is screaming because they know to expect something awesome. The group sans Yamato comes out on stage, start their opening song, and when it’s Yamato’s time to come on stage, he BURSTS THROUGH a paper wall behind the stage, riding on Garurumon’s back. Garurumon blasts blue flames above the crowd as Yamato belts out a scream, signaling the end of their opening number. Now wouldn’t you pay a shit ton of money to see that live? Toei Animation Studios call me.

Taichi stared down at his lunch on the table, trying to make himself eat and not having a lot of success in doing so. Every time he thought about it, his thoughts drifted back to Daisuke and his horrible situation.

We have to stop it. He had faith that Koushiro would be able to figure out what to do. But they were on a time limit and no one knew what the Kaiser would do before the last few hours elapsed. It could be anything.

In point of fact, they didn’t even know for certain if that time limit were real or if it would stay where it was if it were real. The Kaiser lied. There was a lot they didn’t know and if they couldn’t figure it out – if Koushiro and Miyako couldn’t figure it out – then they were probably twelve different kinds of screwed.

A light hand thwacked the side of his head and he jerked up to see Yamato sitting down next to him. He didn’t have a lunch with him. Taichi blinked at that.

“Not hungry?” He knew why he wasn’t. But Yamato?

“Can’t stop thinking about Daisuke,” Yamato muttered. “I want to punch some sense into that jerk.”

Taichi knew that Yamato didn’t mean Daisuke by that. He couldn’t help a quick smile. “I thought that was my job. Punching things.”

“We can share it,” Yamato offered, a flicker of a grin touching to his lips. Then he leaned back. “But not until we get Daisuke fixed up.”

Taichi wasn’t going to argue that point. He traced a finger on the table. “Why would he do this anyway?” Neither of them wanted to use the Kaiser’s real name here in the human world. People might start questioning why they talked about the missing pre-teen genius.

“I’m going to go with he’s a jerk who can’t accept he’s not really as awesome as he thinks he is,” Yamato opined. “Not to mention being a stuck up ass.”

Taichi wasn’t going to argue that point at all. He drummed his fingers on the table. “So what do we do if we can’t stop it?” He didn’t like to think about that, but it was a possibility. Making long-term plans wasn’t his specialty but Yamato planned better than he did a lot of the time.

“We will,” Yamato reassured him. Then he leaned his head back and closed his eyes. “It just might take a lot of time.”

“That we don’t have.” Taichi pointed out.

“I know.” Yamato nodded, toying with a stray napkin. “If we can’t do it soon, then we can do it later.” He was silent for a few moments. “We’ll probably have to find the Kaiser’s base and infiltrate it to give him whatever antidote we can come up with.”

Taichi winced at what wasn’t said – that Yamato wasn’t sure if they could get the potential antidote to Daisuke before he was taken – or went – to the Kaiser. He would have been a lot angrier about it if the potential for it didn’t stare them all so bleakly in the face.

That didn’t mean his stomach didn’t churn and rage didn’t burn in the back of his mind. But they weren’t in the right place for him to start pounding on things, no matter how much he wanted to. He did foresee a few digital trees being punched later, though.

“Let’s go check on him after school,” he said instead. He fished up his D-Terminal and checked for any other messages before he started typing. “I’m going to check in with the others. See if there’s anything new.”

Yamato made an agreeing noise, pulling out his own D-Terminal. Normally Koushiro would be with them at lunch but he’d elected to keep working on researching the antidote. Sora had a different lunch as well, so today it was just the two of them. He suspected they would all be meeting up in the Digital World after classes. Normally they didn’t; without their partners being able to evolve it was too dangerous. But this was a very special situation.

Taichi typed quickly, checking in first with Hikari to see how things were going with Daisuke and then with Koushiro to get updated on the antidote. He didn’t like Hikari being there all by herself – well, not counting Tailmon and V-mon. Tailmon was a fierce defender, but V-mon wouldn’t be able to evolve while Daisuke was still out of it. The area they were in didn’t have one of the Kaiser’s Towers which meant they could be safe. He wanted to believe that.

Koushiro’s answer came first – he and Miyako were still hard at work. Figuring out exactly what the Kaiser’s serum would take even more time but they both had a strong hope that once they’d worked it out, they could quickly create a counter for it. Taichi wished that he understood more about whatever they were doing to be able to help them. He wasn’t even sure what he should know more about – computers or biology or some hybrid of the two. There was a lot of the hybrid kind of thinking when it came to the Digital World. Maybe Jou would be able to help them.

They were doing the best that they could, though, and Taichi believed they were going to succeed. Time, as always, was the real enemy.

Hikari didn’t answer.

Thus, it is not unusual the term 'Ryōshin' would apply in standard Japanese usage when being used for Koushiro's biological relatives.
