The ritual should have worked. Or it could have, if Julian’s mind hadn’t been fogged from the night out he had previously. Round two. He had a candle off by half-an-inch. Magic was fucked. His hands clapped together, the somanic gestures applied and — – he found himself in someone else’s apartment, in a familiar tower. Great. He tried to remember where his grandfather hid his liquor — – but stopped as a figure came into view. Blurred but still able to make out the man’s shape he waved him off. “Look, I didn’t order room service unless you come with a fifth of gin and a dash of bourbon to wash it down with.”

Once again I am OBSESSED with the character design in ghosts. All of them are so iconic and recognizable. They all look amazing as a group together because there’s so much variation but it all just fits together so well.
There’s rich colours like Humphrey’s dark red and Fanny’s pale grey. Others show their personality such as the Captain’s authoritative green, Pat’s friendly yellowish beige and Kitty’s burgundy and pink. Some have contrasts like Thomas’ deep brown and stark white and Julian’s blue vs his bare legs. Then there’s Mary’s smoky tricolour of blue, yellow and white and Robin’s different shades of brown.
They’re all different shapes and sizes and silhouettes that reflect their eras and personalities and how they interact with the world. As a group this variety all match and complement each other.
I just love this show so much oh my god

I swear I’ll make a longer and more coherent post on this eventually when I’ve finished the novel and let it percolate a bit but here’s some surface level thoughts on the Henry and Julian of it all:
1. Julian is definitely grooming him, not sure if there’s even a sexual aspect to that but my gut tells me (as well as all the other subtle Greek history/tragedy themes underlying in the book) that it’s something Platonic in the original sense of the word
1.5. The montblanc fountain pen …
2. The picture of Julian in Henry’s room, the way it’s like the only decor in his house, the way Henry tells him everything but in such a light that Henry looks good and intellectual (I.e. successful bacchanal but no mention of murder)
3. How all the aforementioned things start to unravel the deeper the Greek kids are pulled into the rot associated with bunny’s murder and it drives this wedge btwn them where Henry’s perfection and goodness are thrown into stark contrast with his darker and more callous aspects
4. The way Julian is barely in the book but his presence and influence clings to Henry in every scene and action he takes, I can dig into this a lot more once I’ve finished the novel but the omnipresence of Julian despite him maybe being Actually Present in 1/6 of the book (generous estimate) is so sinister and delicious
5. There is something to be said about the parallel of Henry/Julian and Charles/Camilla as well, made more creepy by the even more scant scenes we get of Henry and Julian interacting one on one 😨
There are a bunch of other things I could add here but I’m on chapter 6 currently and my memories of the rest of the book are hazy at best so I’m coming back to this train of thought once I’ve finished the book, either in an rb here or in a new one later

Chasing Connections
Trigger Warning: Alcohol, physical violence
Switzerland - September 2004
The common room of the boarding school was filled with clusters of students, their laughter and conversations filling the air, mingling with the beats of the latest pop hits. Owl stood off to one side, a plastic cup clutched in his hand. The sound of the party was overwhelming, a cacophony that made his head spin, and the flashing lights added to the sensory overload. Owl felt the familiar sense of alienation that had accompanied him throughout his life. The laughter and chatter of his peers seemed to exist in a world separate from his own—a world he couldn't quite access. Owl felt isolated, like a ghost drifting through the crowd unnoticed. Everywhere Owl looked, he saw connections being made—effortless, natural connections that seemed beyond his grasp. His attempts to join conversations earlier in the evening had ended awkwardly, met with puzzled looks or polite nods before the groups resumed their chatter without him.
His brother Percy had left for Oxford earlier that year, leaving Owl to navigate the social intricacies of boarding school alone. Percy had always been charming and well-liked, and even though Owl resented him most of the time, his brother's presence had at least managed to bridge the gap between him and his peers to some degree.  Now, without Percy, Owl was more lost than ever.
In the corner of the room, a group of students erupted into laughter at a shared joke, their camaraderie palpable. Owl watched them wistfully, wishing he could be a part of it, but he was painfully aware of his own social shortcomings, how he often said the wrong thing or failed to read the nuances of a conversation. His mind raced with self-doubt, each failed interaction replaying in his head like a broken record. Why couldn't he just be normal? Why was it so hard for him to fit in?
Taking a sip from his cup, Owl winced at the bitter taste of cheap vodka mixed with cola. He disliked the taste but he hoped the alcohol would dull the edges of his discomfort and maybe help him blend in, even if only temporarily. If anything it would at least be a welcome distraction from the thoughts swirling in his head.
"Hey, Owl!" a voice called out, breaking through his thoughts.
Owl turned to see a fellow student, Julian, approaching with a grin. Julian was one of the few people who occasionally spoke to Owl, though their interactions were usually brief and superficial.
"Hey," Owl replied, trying to sound casual as he forced a smile.
Julian glanced at the cup in Owl's hand and chuckled. "Looks like you're hitting it hard tonight. Careful not to overdo it."
Owl shrugged, his smile faltering. "Yeah, just...you know, trying to enjoy the party."
"Right," Julian said, nodding as he scanned the room. "Well, see you around."
And with that, Julian was gone, melting back into the crowd, leaving Owl standing alone once more. The interaction left Owl feeling more isolated than before, a stark reminder of his inability to connect meaningfully with others.
Owl finished his drink, the alcohol burning his throat. It didn't numb the loneliness, but it dulled the edges, making everything seem slightly less harsh. He watched as other students laughed, danced, and flirted, their lives seemingly so effortless and carefree. In that moment, Owl felt like he was watching a world that he could never be a part of, a world where he was forever destined to be on the outside looking in. The thought was suffocating, and he found himself wishing that he could just disappear, vanish into thin air and escape the relentless pressure to fit in.
The music thumped on, a pulsing rhythm that vibrated through the floor. Owl closed his eyes, trying to shut it all out, to find some semblance of peace amid the chaos. But even with his eyes closed, he couldn't escape the sense of isolation that wrapped around him like a shroud.
Time passed in a blur, the room spinning around Owl as the alcohol took hold. He wasn't sure how much he had drunk, but it was enough to make his head swim and his thoughts foggy. The isolation that had gnawed at him all evening seemed to fade into the background, replaced by a dull numbness that spread through his limbs.
Stumbling slightly, Owl made his way outside, the cool night air a welcome relief from the stifling heat of the party. He leaned against the stone wall of the building, breathing deeply and willing the world to stop spinning.
The night was quiet, the stars scattered across the sky like distant pinpricks of light. Owl gazed up at them, feeling a kinship with their isolation, each one separated by vast stretches of emptiness. He wondered if they felt as alone as he did, each one a solitary beacon in the darkness.
He closed his eyes, letting the cool breeze wash over him. He didn't know how to change, how to become the person everyone expected him to be. All he knew was that he was tired—tired of trying, tired of failing, tired of feeling like he was living in a world that would never accept him. In the darkness, Owl was overwhelmed by his emotions, the tears finally falling as the feeling of emptiness consumed him. Owl didn't hear the footsteps approaching until it was too late.
"Well, well, look who we have here," a voice sneered.
Owl turned to see a group of familiar students, their expressions twisted with malicious glee.
"What's the matter, *redacted*?" a boy named Marcus taunted, noticing Owl's tear-streaked face. "Couldn't handle the party? Or did you realize no one wants you around?"
The other students laughed. Owl straightened up, wiping his face with the back of his hand and trying to ignore the burning feeling of humiliation in his chest.
"Looks like the little baby has been crying," another student chimed in. "What a loser."
Owl felt a surge of anger rise within him, the same anger that had simmered under the surface for years. He wasn't going to let them see him break. Not now. "At least I don't need to follow Marcus around like a puppy just to feel important," Owl shot back, his voice sharp and cutting.
The laughter died down, replaced by a tense silence. Marcus's face twisted with rage as he took a step closer to Owl. "What did you just say?"
"You heard me," Owl replied, his gaze unwavering. "You're just a pathetic bully who needs to put others down to feel good about yourself."
The group of students exchanged uneasy glances, clearly not expecting Owl to fight back. Marcus‘s expression darkened, and he shoved Owl hard against the wall. "You think you're so smart, don't you? Let's see how smart you are when I beat the crap out of you."
Owl felt the impact of the wall against his back, but he didn't flinch. He had endured worse at the hands of his father.
"Go ahead," Owl said, his voice eerily calm. "Try it."
The provocation hung in the air, daring Marcus to act. For a moment, time seemed to freeze, the night holding its breath in anticipation. Then Marcus lunged forward, swinging wildly with a fist aimed at Owl's face.
Owl moved with a speed that surprised everyone. He ducked under the punch, feeling a surge of adrenaline as he retaliated with a swift jab to Marcus's side. The impact resonated through his knuckles, and he felt a grim satisfaction at the pained grunt that escaped Marcus.
The scuffle escalated quickly, fists flying in a flurry of movement. Owl was no stranger to fighting; years of dealing with his father had taught him a thing or two. It was as if a switch had been flipped in Owl's mind, transforming him from a vulnerable boy into something cold, calculating and unyielding. Each punch was calculated and executed with a precision that caught his opponents off guard. There was something unsettling in the way Owl fought—an intensity that was bordering on unhinged.
Eventually, overwhelmed by Owl's ferocity,  Marcus stumbled backwards, clutching his side and gasping for air. "You think you can scare me?" Owl spat, his voice icy and controlled. "I've dealt with worse than you. You're nothing but a coward."
The other boys exchanged uneasy glances, the realization that they had underestimated Owl dawning on them. What they had assumed would be an easy target had turned into something else entirely—a force they hadn't expected to face.
Marcus glared at Owl, frustration and embarrassment mingling on his face. "You're a fucking psycho," he muttered, backing away. "This isn't over."
"Anytime you want to lose again, let me know," Owl replied, his voice dripping with contempt. The confrontation had left him energized, the numbness replaced by a fierce clarity that felt strangely invigorating.

Happy STS! 💕
Sorry for the late ask, I've actually been writing all day and I genuinely thought it was still Friday until I checked my inbox!!
If you could have one of your own characters meet another fictional character of a writer of your choice (this can include mutuals!), who would you choose and how do you imagine their interaction would go?
Hello! Thank you so much for the Ask!
I am terribly sorry for the very late answer, I have been catching up on a lot of my writing in the last few days, as it is a local holiday here in my country, and only now was I able to answer your ask, as I wanted to answer it properly.
It is a very interesting question!
I will choose some of my favorite characters from my favorite books and movies that I think my own characters would love to meet in person, but I might mention some of my mutual's characters too.
RAELEN ASHIREN: I think that Raelen would love to meet Arya Stark (Game of Thrones), Hiccup Haddock (How to Train Your Dragon), Toph Beifong (Avatar The Last Airbender), Alucard (Castlevania), Merida (Brave), Sam Winchester (Supernatural), Esmeralda (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame) and Tulio (Road to El Dorado)
AZRA MOORSWORTH: I think that Azra would love to meet, and would likely become good friends with: Lo'ak (Avatar 2: The Way of Water), Richard Grayson/Nightwing (Titans from DC Comics), Kili (The Hobbit), Jim Hawkings (Treasure Planet) and Apollo (The Trials of Apollo). Another character that I think reminds me of him is Palem from one of my Mutual's works (head to @lassiesandiego to check this character out!).
JULYAN ASHIREN: I think that Julyan would love to meet Dean Winchester (Supernatural), Hector (Castlevania), Prince Caspian (Chronicles of Narnia), Mako (Legend of Korra), Robb Stark (Game of Thrones), Runaan (The Dragon Prince), Shiro (Voltron: Legendary Defender) and Violet (Arcane).
BRYN SEPERI: In my opinion, Bryn would like to meet (even if that interaction would probably end with someone getting stabbed): Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone), Theon Greyjoy (Game of Thrones), Trevor Belmont (Castlevania), Murtagh (Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle), Nico Di Angelo (Percy Jackson Books), Nanashi (Sword of The Stranger), Morgana Pendragon (Merlin) and Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher).
NYX FAESTORM: I think Nyx would like to meet Legolas (Lord of The Rings), Jaskier (The Witcher), Vax'ildan (Legend of Vox Machina), Jesper Fahey (Shadow and Bone), Vignette (Carnival Row), Julian Devorak (The Arcana), and Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)
VALLERIUS ZYNDROSAR: Vall would definitely like to meet and talk to characters like: Edmund Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia), Jayce Tallis (Arcane), Aleksander Morosova/The Darkling (Shadow and Bone), Will Turner (Pirates of The Caribbean), Callum (The Dragon Prince), James Kirk (Star Trek), and Enjolras (Les Miserables).
TANWIN LYRANDETH: I think the characters he would like to meet would be Lotor (Voltron), Bucky Barnes (Captain America: Winter Soldier), Tauriel (The Hobbit), Loki (Thor and Avenger Movies), Tim Drake (DC Comics), and Odysseus (Epic The Musical and the original Odyssey).
(and last but not least for this ask)
ELLINOR DALLANTES: She would like to meet Ciri (The Wicher), King Ezran (The Dragon Prince), Fa Mulan (Mulan), Percy De Rolo (Legend of Vox Machina), Susan Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia), Jaqen H'ghar (Game of Thrones), Elizabeth Swann (Pirates of The Caribbean), and, Lancelot (King Arthur, especially the 2004 movie) Leia Organa (Star Wars).
I choose these characters because I think that their personalities would match enough for them to have an interesting interaction, as they could discuss similar worldviews and struggles, though they would quite possibly generate far too much chaos together lol.

Character Profile - Devaron Raliak
Tumblr media
*DISCLAIMER - This character has some severe symptoms of trauma. If sending in an ask, please do not mention or offer Cake to Devaron due to it being a trigger. Thank you! :)*
Name: Devaron 'Dev' Raliak
Blood: Maroon {Mutant}
Age: 9 sweeps
Strife Specibus: Staffkind
Physical Appearance: 1.63 metres tall, rectangular body type with narrow shoulders + hips, underweight but not lanky and very light muscle. His skin and hands are mildly-calloused, and his left arm has issues with stiffness due to his lifestyle requiring some physical strain. The skin around his left eye is entirely scarred from his eyebrow to the middle of his cheek.
Hair is a mess of spiky raven points ending halfway down his neck, bangs being cut short in the front. Dev's usual attire consists of a black tee sporting the (V)ulpecula sign beneath a teal vest, a pair of worn, tattered auburn pants, and burgundy shoes with rubber violet soles.
Personality Type/Alignment: The Isolated {Lawful Neutral}
Devaron's easily alienated and cripplingly introverted, which makes building strong social bonds difficult. While not fully prescribing to nihilism, he's oft to project an attitude outwards to others that 'he doesn't matter, life is rigged from the start' as a defensive front to avoid confrontation and in stark contrast to when he was younger and boasted a more prideful and unapologetic side to his personality. Still, he's definitely prone to get grumpy as well due to chronic insomnia
He's got a very big inferiority complex due to his status on the hemospectrum, his lack of close interactions, and other physical attributes like his height, scar, lisp, etc. He's difficult to trust, but not one to come to blows; more than likely, upsetting him will make him retreat from the conversation, or quite literally leave the situation. Dev's also had his fair share of traumatic events at an early age and suffers from symptoms related to that.
Despite these prickly bits to his character, when in the comfort of trusted trolls he's a massive geek.
Devaron has a special relationship with brewing tea. He never developed typical burgundy psionics, but through practice and patience he's managed to use his memory and his passion for tea-making in concert to store memories using tea, not unlike the making of a memory palace. When Dev first meets a troll, he likes to brew a cup of tea to remember them by and that memory becomes engraved in his mind.
Look for a troll who's skittish, easily flustered, hopelessly sentimental and discovering how to properly express his emotions, and Dev is likely to fill that box.
Likes: Nagashell Zeta (his favourite cartoon growing up), Fiduspawn, roleplay, chess, mysteries (both escape rooms and detective novels) and playing the recorder.
Dislikes: W.I.P
Relationships:
Ashter Faurux (@memurfevur): Dev's ex-matesprit. Meeting on a small-community forum when they were much younger, Dev was drawn in at first by Ashter's combination of spunk and vulnerability, quickly becoming infatuated with the other troll, especially after Ashter began to confess some feelings in return. Despite the short-term happiness the two had, however, Dev's possessiveness and Ashter's past began to put a wedge between the two. Eventually, Ashter broke up with Dev and left in a flurry, leaving the Rust to dismay and unrequited pain. Since then, the two have not talked at all, though Dev still keeps Ashter's number on his phone just in case the Pyrite were to ever text in need of help. Dev's harshly bitter of that event in his childhood.
Julian Zealis (@memurfevur): Dev's current red crush/matesprit. A cheeky optimist fixated on making everything happy meets a lonely pessimist who is amazed by the simplest acts of kindness that Julian doles out to him. Their shared experience in being at the bottom of the caste system, along with being mutual nerds brought them to trust one another very quick, even despite Dev's tentative trust and chronic relationship issues. They help each other's traumas and wrestle each other's insecurity away. Despite his general timidness, Julian makes Dev feel like few trolls have before - that he won't be left alone, that there's a shoulder to cry on, and that's unmistakably beautiful to him. They're just...they're cute, your honor. [Ship Name: Dreadnought]
Adrian Uyilst (@memurfevur): Dev's moirail. Brought in as a result of another friend-group, the two became immediate nerd-friends due to their shared interests and bonded closer as a result of their experiences. When smushed together, they become a lethal prankster duo and rivals pushing one another to be the best version of one another. In their youth, they tried for matespritship; however, it did not work out and left sore wounds for both. Despite the misgivings, they stayed in contact and slowly repaired the damage even after Adrian began going to university. Eventually, the two admitted to one another about their feelings again, and claimed a diamond quadrant with one another. [Ship Name: Lavender Tea]
Hadesa Lankro (@memurfevur): Meeting on terms that were less than sweet, Dev's jealousy coloured his opinions of Hadesa in his early years, even going as so far as to suggesting that she take her own life out of protectiveness over his ex-mate, Ashter. Though the icy-cold pool of their interactions may slowly be warming, they are clearly still a long ways away from friendship.
[This profile will be updated with further development of interactions.]

With anyone else politeness and manners would have won out enough for her to have waited until her crisp knocks on the door were answered but her patience had always waned for such things when it came to her family. For all she acted aloof, there would never be anything that would stop her from being there for her family and there had never seemed a more fitting time. She had never been one to give much weight to gossip but in her line of work it paid to be on top of the newest headlines. So much so that no matter how much she hated the principle of it, she still read the Daily Pier religiously. It had been hard to miss the amount that her brother had featured. “I come bearing gifts, Jules.” She walked past him to retrieve two glasses, flashing a smirk over her shoulder as she did. “Or are you answering to Demon Dick or maybe even Homewrecker these days?”

I got the go ahead from @jilljoycearts to do an art analysis/comparison to how she approaches the Arcana style in comparison to the game and myself! She's been a really inspiring artist to compare and contrast during my art development so it's cool to write this all down. Go follow her on her tumblr or instagram (same name.) I highly recommend her personal art, looking at her patreon, or getting a commission if possible. She drew Abosede for me once and I still look at it.
Anyway!
In comparison to the game art, I'd describe her art as the Arcana minus my art. She nails the lineweight variation that makes it so iconic and there's a detail and cleanliness in her art that I aspire to. She makes sure her lineart and colouring is neat and rendered, with a lot of lines that accent the body seen in Dana Rune's artwork especially.
Tumblr media
(eg. the tapering of the fingers and lines for the wrists and forearm)
Tumblr media
Rendering-wise, one of the most iconic things in her style is how she renders shiny materials and hair. Out of all the Arcana artists, it reminds me a lot of Veronica Liwski, but even then extra attention is put into the specific interaction of light and shadow. This extends to the rendering, where she tends towards stark lighting with dark shadows and high contrast light. There's usually three layers of lighting for added depth to the figures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anatomy of her style is where it differs most from the Arcana. It has less exaggerated proportions and posing; the eyes are smaller, the hair is drawn with smaller, more proportional curls/locks, and the faces aren't as sharp or long. The nose especially sticks out to me, having more of a blunt/squarish shape to how it interacts with the mouth in contrast to the drastic angles in the game.
One way I'd describe the overal compositional differences is that Joyce draws at more of a distance. The lineart is thicker and the characters are often drawn further away from the "camera" than the game (though this is in part to drawing more multi-character illustrations.) There's less texture in her art as well. I'd assume this is from the brushes she uses, but the neatness of her lineart and rendering gives it a very smooth appearance. The lineart doesn't have the same loose texture or opacity change, making it precise where the game art isn't.
My own art has less technical skill (I envy her ability to draw faces at angles) but it's looser in how I exaggerate the expressions and rough-in lighting with a low-opacity brush. It's always been a fascinating point of reference for art styles. She mostly drew Asra, Julian, and Lucio, with some Nadia, fitting her more angular art style where Muriel and Portia have some softer shapes.

Had   the   warlock   been   more   prone   to   caution,   he   may   have   been   less   noticeable.   But,   being   in   the   limelight   for   most   of   his   life   had   dulled   any   sense   of   nimbleness   he   may   have   had   as   a   child.   He   blamed   the   chair   that   his   foot   had   caught   on,   causing   it   to   make   it   rather   obvious   that   his   attempt   to   move   without   being   seen   was   an   utter   failure.   What   else   was   new   ?   He   made   up   for   the   bumble   by   pulling   the   chair   around   with   his   foot   that   had   caught   and   slipping   into   the   seat,   attempting   to   smile   as   charmingly   as   he   could.   “   Come   here   often,   beautiful   ?   “   Smooth,   Julian   Stark   was   not.

Things I hope to do on here (more than just in one thread)
ROMANCE ! THIS ! MAN !
Exploring Happy’s sexuality. He’s bisexual, but doesn’t come to terms with it until he’s in his late thirties because of toxic masculinity and social norms, etc.
Exploring his relationship with Pepper, especially after Tony’s death. Potential romance would be interesting, given the comic canon.
Exploring his relationship with Rhodey. They barely interact through the movies and at Tony’s funeral Happy reaches for Rhodey and they hold each other for comfort. Honestly. My fucking heart. There is something long standing and deep between these dudes who have known each other for three decades, I need this friendship.
SUBWISH - I imagine Happy and Rhodey have had to pull Tony out of some jams, especially in their 20s. It’s my headcanon that Tony was into typical drinking and subsequent drug use. I specifically would love a thread based on RDJ’s performance in “Less Than Zero” and the scene where “[Julian] gives great head” is spray painted on the walls. If someone with the profile of Tony Stark was in that situation and dealing with that.
Downton Abbey AU that happens as a dream while Happy’s in his coma in IM3
Happy using an Iron Man suit for whatever reason. Seriously.
Agent Coulson and Happy Hogan kicking ass and taking names together.

You know, it always baffles me when people think the best person for Caitlin is Julian. Julian never listened to Caitlin or what she wanted. From the beginning she said she was connecting with him to reach out an olive branch and atone for her mistakes and Julian took that as his responsibility to then date and protect her when she had repeatedly told him not to.
From beginning to end I found nothing romantic about their interactions, and when you contrast how Cisco treated Caitlin in the third season to how Julian treated her you see the stark different approaches to how they handled the same crisis and it shows down to the very moment when Caitlin was on that death bed who respected her more.

How do you go about planning your fic? You got some characters that have only existed on family trees, like Branda, but how do you fill in the gaps? And do you go into a fic with a goal in mind. For example, one of your goals in AOUH was to explore the life of a bastard girl, classism, and further explore the general misogyny of the world. Do those themes exist in your head before you sit down to write the story, or do they develop as you are planning it out?
Usually I make the family tree first and then decide what roles I want certain characters to play. I had to come up with Branda and Hal’s children and their personalities and I needed them to complement the Starks while not being exact replicas of them.
I decided I wanted the oldest son to be friends with Stannis so he needed a personality that would work. I wanted Julian to be a bit of a try hard wannabe northman. I though Flora should be more ‘girly’ but still bold enough to make friends with Lyanna. I wanted a younger son who could squire for Jon Conn and who would be more self serving and pragmatic.
Also since I thought it would be interesting if Hal was the second son who inherited after his brother died young, I came up with Osric and thought he should have a bastard daughter so I could explore that POV.
Then I had to decide how all these different characters would interact and develop and the themes came from that. I know family unity would be a big one, and class divisions, but it also grew into exploring the intersection of misogyny and classism, and something of an anti-war narrative, since none of the war in AOUH is ‘cool’ or ‘badass’, it’s just awful.

“It was a maddening image —
Little by little, the rooftop space filled up with guests. It’s impossible for a rum-sponsored party not to turn lively; and certainly, it has. While some are happy with their drinks and stay in the venue, drinking and dancing their spirits away — others choose to venture out, either returning to their rooms or getting lost in the maze that are the corridors of The Mark hotel.
In either case, the night is light and young, and there’s not a worry in their minds.
Little do they know however, that in the shadows, the Syndicate awaits.
— and the only way to whip it was to hang on until dusk —
Although the night had been planned to exhaustion, it’d been all but a coincidence that the operation had fallen on the same date as the party launch. It’s a blessing, at the same time that it’s a curse; more people circulating the area isn’t ideal — but a sea of potential issues isn’t so much so, if they’re impaired to begin with.
130 million dollars, gone up in flames. But they ought to make their money back, somehow.
So here the Syndicate hides, and at around 10:30, they strike. Swift and professional as ever, they go completely unnoticed — and they will take all that they can.
A highly effective heist, right under their noses. Those 130 million earned back in just a night.
No wild cards, no action that isn’t necessary, were the instructions given. Money, jewelry, art, anything of true value — that’s what they’re after. Designed as a victimless crime as far as bloodshed goes, the Syndicate still accounts for all. No issue, lest you get in their way.
— and banish the ghosts with rum.”
Unfortunately however, some unlucky few have. As instructed, should anyone be a concern, be it that they’re found in their rooms or other areas in the midst of the operation — they should be neutralized, by whatever means necessary. All with still keeping their anonymity, and succeeding at their tasks.

OOC Info:
Part Two out of Three.
Part two will run for a few days, to allow for everyone to comfortably write their interactions in time; an update will be made both on the blog and discord for subsequent parts.
There is no requirement that people drop previous event threads set during Part 1 — but we encourage everyone to prioritize Part 2. This can be either through new fresh threads, or shifting your Part 1 thread into Part 2.
For characters not involved in the conflict, there are no restrictions to replying to starters (or continuing things) from Part 1, unless they were posted by someone, or are written with someone involved in the conflict. In that case, those starters may no longer be replied to. You’re also free to start any new things with other non-conflict characters as you wish.
If you wish to have any injuries (be them major or minor) or heavy impacting plots happen involving your character, please contact the admins so we can include it into the narrative.
Those in the conflict are encouraged to come up with scenarios where, mid-robbery, one would have the other held hostage. Be it at a hotel room, in some hidden office, or anywhere that is far from view and where there would be plenty to steal. They’re on a mission, after all. As always, if you have trouble coming up with ideas, the admins are always willing to help.
At the end of this post, we offer challenges to the guests. However, those are simply suggested interactions — and even if you choose to write it, your character is not limited to just writing those.
SYNDICATE CHARACTERS:
[ ALL SYNDICATE MEMBERS ARE WEARING NEUTRAL BLACK CLOTHING AND MASKS. IF THEIR CLOTHES WEREN’T NEUTRAL AT THE PARTY, THEN AT THIS POINT THEY WOULD HAVE CHANGED. NOTHING ABOUT THEIR APPEARANCE (THAT THEY CAN CONTROL) SHOULD BE RECOGNIZABLE. EVEN IF ENCOUNTERING SOMEONE THEY HAVE MET BEFORE, THEY ARE TOLD TO KEEP THEIR IDENTITIES SECRET TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITIES. ]
For Syndicate members especially, Part 2 should be prioritized so that plots can flow easily.
If you have Part 1 threads, we won’t ask that you drop them, but that you work your way into finishing them — with your characters, above all, keeping in mind that they have a job to do. It might be a night of fun for everyone else, but not them.
From now on, you can only interact with other Syndicate members, or the character you were paired with.
You can write as many mid-robbery threads with your fellow Syndicate members as your heart desires. Interactions amongst them are allowed, and absolutely encouraged!
As far as the rest of the party goes, you may only interact with the character yours was paired with, as one is the other’s hostage.
Your character should be focused in the robbery itself and collecting valuable goods. Anyone they’ve encountered is damage control.
Important: this is meant to be an incredibly secretive and smooth operation. Get in, get out, without causing disturbance. The main party should not have any inkling or knowledge that this is happening.
POINTS AND CHALLENGES:
Syndicate members and conflict volunteers will each earn 20 points for writing their paired threads. (It doesn’t matter if one character ‘wrote’ the starter; both members will be awarded points.)
All remaining characters will earn 20 points for completing the challenges prompted below. They are not mandatory, but we will reward you if you choose to go forth with them.
The points above will be awarded at the end of the event, to account for any starters going unanswered or quickly dropped, as we wish to be as fair as possible.
Surprise! We’re also rewarding conflict volunteers with 30 points for being wonderful team players and allowing us to use their characters for this plot. We adore you and appreciate you, so here’s a small gesture to reflect that!
CHALLENGES:
Jennifer Callaghan recognizes Izaak Walker from his internet presence, and attempts to strike an interview, or even a comment. Izaak knows it’s unadvisable to go forth with it, given all the rum ingested tonight.
Andrea Galán has been avoiding Aaron Keaton, until they cross paths. There’s an inkling or knowledge of her involvement with crime, and tensions rise.
Gideon Hayes is spotted by an off duty Joaquim Borges whilst trying to deal — be it to a random guest, or worst yet, the very detective himself.
Danvir Persaud thinks he recognizes Laith Hassan, from briefly crossing paths in the law-and-lawful world. There’s no reason for a sketch artist and a lawyer to engage however, until now — that they’re both trying to get a vending machine to work.
Renata Cervantes-Müller and Úrsula Villa are both powerful women in their own right — except that they share far different ideals, and defend different people. It’s been easy to avoid one another thus far, until the elevator doors fail, locking them in.
A dentist and the state’s most prominent politician walk into a... bathroom. It’s a classic, slightly awkward, run-in. Except this time, it involves Nicholas Bergeron — and Julian Berkeley.
Jakob Cervantes-Müller is a busy man, and the things keeping him busy aren’t the kindest. For prevention (and future endeavors), he needs a lawyer — and he’s heard Adam Starke is one of the best. What a coincidence, that their drinks just got mixed up at the bar.
Constance Romero, the Cartel’s informant manager, is always on the lookout for future contacts. Like some other select people, she’d heard of Lev Movska’s defection from The Brotherhood — and hell if she isn’t going to try and get all of that knowledge into archive for them. The enemy of my enemy, as they say.
With too much rum in their system, Lola Villarin and Diego Romero end up wandering — testing every other room for unlocked doors. Eventually, they make it into a suite; it’s all fun and games, until the lock won’t allow them back out.
Hazel Arthur and Ryan Fitzgerald barely look at each other, when touching up their make-up in the lobby’s bathroom. But they have to acknowledge each other’s presence when they realize they’re locked in — and Hazel hasn’t heard back from her partner in far too long.
They’d both had the same idea — the hotel’s fire escape as the perfect spot for a smoke break. Hans Starke and Zuleika Sandoval are now forced to share the space (that both claim to have found first).
Bob Bekker and Aera Paek, different positions at different publications. One man with success in his horizon, and a woman who can grant anyone it. It’s a throw-away conversation until the words fact checker come to rise. The best paper, after all, is the most accurate one — would this man do her the favor of failing, in exchange for a brighter future?
Araceli Aguilar suddenly stops Heather Hyeon Seo in the middle of the lobby, with an unwarranted prediction of her future. Even if Heather doesn’t believe in it, it’s intriguing enough that she must hear more.
Rahi Kumar is well known for his love of the sky, preferring to gaze upwards towards the heavens; it is this exact preference, that sends him careening into Andel Kenza, who scurries away from a main party room, clutching what appears to be an empty bottle of rum, a strange substance congealed on its base. The pair stare at another another - a stalemate.
Erin Katz was never a woman to wait for opportunity to simply knock on her door - she prefers to kick it in herself, a stiletto crashing through wooden panels. JJ Baptiste is a man who can make or break you in this city, and with the intriguing wallet she’s just found on the floor, she thinks she’s got enough leverage to earn his ear as he lords over a table in the back of the bar.
Moon Subin is currently scouting the media world, looking for new voices to either support his agenda in the press — or to simply gain insight. It’s unclear which Maureen Keaton could be, yet... but it’s worth a try.
FINAL NOTES
1 — If by any chance your pairing partner, or your challenge partner doesn’t get back to you — please contact the main page and we will rearrange things so that you may still write it! No one will be left without some event fun, we promise.
2 — If you’ve missed the window to volunteer your character for conflict, or you have joined recently and didn’t know about it, you can shoot the main page a message and we will do our very best to include you into the action. Only main page messages, please — as Discord will be hard to keep track of.
3 — As always, the admins are only a message away should you have any questions.
Part 2 interactions are now open. Have fun!

heave her up and away we go
people across the globe have heard of the wolf of the sea. they’ve heard tales of a captain with hair as pale as the moon and eyes as yellow as the gold he seeks, of a brute of a man whose conquests are vicious and leave no survivors.
(no one ever points out that, if there were no survivors, there would be no tales.)
nearly all the coastal cities claim to have been visited by the wolf and his horrific vessel, the mohren. “he took our mayor’s daughter” or “we watched him slay all our finest soldiers...” all stories of bloodshed, of unspeakable acts the likes of which only a true pirate could achieve.
(no one ever points out that no one actually describes having seen the wolf in the wake of such assaults.)
the wolf has earned himself an awful name upon the seven seas, and it is said that he fears no other captain - not one who sails beneath the crown, nor one who hoists the skull and bones high. it is said, in fact, that even blackbeard cowers at his very name.
(no one ever points out that blackbeard has been many years dead and gone.)
and yet...
well.
for such a horrendous reputation, the wolf of the seas is, in fact, little more than a puppy in the shallows.
and who am i to tell you this?
none other than the wolf’s favorite companion, his most trusted friend, his private performer, his lover on the best of days.
i was born julian, but following my recruitment into the pack of the wolf, as it were, i have taken up a multitude of names - jaskier, dandelion, even songbird at times.
(more cruel names, such as bastard, wretch and ship’s rat, at other times. it all depends upon the side of bed upon which the wolf awakens.)
when geralt found me, i was playing for farthings - pence or shillings, on a good day - at a little pub in an even littler port city. some of you may know it, but it is likelier that the rest do not, so i won’t name it. it had been a rough day for tips, and yet still i sang. by the time a great, hulking man with hair as white as snow and eyes as bright as the sun walked inside, my voice was nearly gone, and so i pounced upon the chance to down a drink or ten with a mostly-willing partner.
(geralt is standing above me as i write this, and he says he was less than willing, but i question his memory at times.)
i don’t recall how long we talked that evening before the location of our discussion moved from the pub to the exterior wall, and then, eventually, to the loft of a stable, the owner of which i knew would be drinking until dawn. i caution against taking a man to bed amongst a pile of straw, for a multitude of reasons, but i have no regrets.
well, anyway.
dawn came, and i found myself loath to leave geralt entirely. he mentioned that he had a ship, the night before, and it was this that i repeated to him upon sunrise. “surely,” said i, “my prospects for money would be better in a new town with new ears,” and geralt sighed at me, acting so incredibly put-upon.
“to the next port,” he said, and that was that.
“but, jaskier,” you cry, “you set foot upon the mohren and did not immediately turn tail? such bravery!”
waste not your praise, fair reader, for, i must admit, i had yet to piece together the image of this powerful man with that of the infamous wolf of the sea. it was with foolish joy and a light heart that i strode up the gangway and onto the great black ship. first to strike me was the fact that the only visible crew consisted of a young girl, watching from the crow’s nest.
next was that this was most certainly not of the british crown, nor was it your average fishing vessel.
no, it was a large and sleek thing, meant for speed and endurance.
it was, in short, a pirate vessel, something which i confirmed for myself when i cast my eyes upward to see a black flag overhead.
a black flag that held not the jolly roger, but a massive white wolf skull, vicious teeth bared.
i assure you, dear reader, my heart was in my throat when i whirled to geralt, who had already begun to pull the wooden gangway back onboard.
“you’re the - “
“the wolf of the seas,” he said, and he sounded entirely unaffected, as though this was a daily conversation. “i have no plans to hurt you. like i said, to the next port, and no further.”
it was as i stood there, lute in hands and jaw upon the deck, that geralt stepped toward me, and i take pride in the fact that i didn’t flinch. “you have the song of a lifetime in the making, right here before you, but if you want to go back ashore, i won’t stop you. i’m merely offering transport.”
as i recall it, i was entirely robbed of the ability to speak for those first few seconds, so i was capable of little more than a nod. on the one hand, if i was killed, i could rest assured it would be painless, considering the strength and power geralt had made evident the night before. on the other hand, geralt was entirely correct - if i were to survive, i would have the makings of the finest song known to man.
i would live in luxury!
geralt took to the wheel shortly thereafter, and i followed along, standing near his side to observe.
the wolf of the seas, i can tell you all, is not a fan of idle conversation, so the bulk of our discussions for the next four days consisted of my eloquent monologues, halfhearted grunts, and, well, various other noises.
it was the evening of the second day before i managed to coax anything akin to an explanation from the incredibly silent man, and, once i had begun the process of extracting his story, i found it far more prudent to remain aboard than leave his company at the next port. geralt protested initially, but three years later, he has not yet rid himself of me entirely.
now, i wish to preface this - and all subsequent information - with the following:
all that i am about to relay has been pieced together over many a year of traveling with the wolf of the seas, and the writings in this journal are little more than a traveling musician’s attempts to chronicle the life of one of the kindest men to ever sail the world.
with that out of the way, let us begin.
-
the circumstances of geralt’s birth and early childhood remain a mystery, as any attempt to discuss these things results in a complete and undeniable refusal, so alas, i cannot tell you where the wolf was spawned. i can, however, tell you that his introduction to the sea came about as follows:
as a youth, he trained under a crew of shipwrights, one that built the finest of crafts for the crown - a crew that has, from what i’ve gathered, long since met their ends due to natural causes. geralt’s affinity with the craft paved a natural way for him to join the british royal navy as soon as he was of age.
(watching geralt, it is easy to imagine him upon a warship, and yet, i cannot fathom him in anything but a position of command. he is a leader, through and through.)
he saw few true battles, as my understanding goes, but it seems his frustration with the crown merely grew with each passing day, as he and his crew were sent to dispatch all pirate vessels. in moments of vulnerability, he has shared with me stories of horrific acts committed by the men said to be on the side of the law, of innocent folk harmed in the path of good, of men whose only crime was seeking a living upon the seas slaughtered like beasts for the altar.
to date, geralt hasn’t told me of the final straw.
i know better than to ask.
according to him, it isn’t that difficult to steal a ship from the navy when one is among the most trusted sailors.
i have my doubts.
geralt’s brand of piracy is a unique one, to be sure. i doubt the man is capable of a legitimate attack on another vessel, at least not on one that isn’t telegraphing clear intent to harm. a stark contrast to the brutal portrait painted by civilized society, geralt spends his days patrolling the seas with intent to help, not to harm.
in my time spent at his side, i have witnessed the horrible wolf of the seas escort smaller craft to port, dispatch empty slave vessels and let them sink in splinters, defend others flying beneath the jolly roger from the crown... perhaps most important, however, i have seen him offer men and women alike safe passage or a spot on the crew in exchange for their promise to spread the worst of rumors to those on land.
why?
well, according to geralt, the why should be obvious - no british officer is going to fear a pirate whose reputation is one of kindness.
the wolf of the seas travels with a motley crew, to be sure. in all honesty, his crew isn’t much of one to speak of, as the majority of those who travel with him regularly are kept on for... sentiment, as it were. in terms of combatants, he employs those whose luck has failed them elsewhere.
the young lady i’d spotted in the crow’s nest that first day goes by the name of ciri, and she was taken in when the crown left her town decimated in search of a presumed criminal. geralt thinks of her as a daughter, something i determined very quickly. she’s a bright child, although perhaps a tad too perceptive for her own good.
there’s a grown woman aboard, too - a lady with bright red hair and a sharp wit, known as triss. geralt’s interactions with her lead me to believe they were once rather fond of eachother. i bear her no ill will. she’s an interesting sort.
eskel and lambert - two rather formidable men, both of whom i tend to avoid, for little reason apart from their enjoyment of tormenting me. i’ve rescued my beloved instruments from their mischievous hands many times before.
there are others, too, of course, different people of different creeds, all taken aboard to be given a second chance, all useful in some way. i know none of them particularly well, but we live on friendly terms.
geralt makes a point of dropping in on certain towns regularly, to visit old friends - vesemir, yennefer... i never interact with them terribly much, but i have seen the fondness in geralt’s eyes when he returns from his much-needed retreats.
one thing for which i can vouch is that the wolf of the seas has never turned on one of his own. he treats each and every one of us well, and truly, we want for nothing. i, for what it’s worth, have a warm bed and a warmer body to enjoy each and every night, in exchange for little more than song.
i live what is far from a conventional life, to be sure, but i wouldn’t trade it for all the riches and status in the world.
well, the moon rises high, and geralt is calling me to bed. i must set my quill aside for the time being, but rest assured, my tales are far from complete.
until the morrow,
jaskier
you have no clue how nervous I am right now - I really, really hope you like this!
to the rest of you, don’t worry, merman!au is nearly done!
