hi!! ur m&l iceberg appeared on my dash, and i mmmight wanna make a premiere video abt it someday?? (if i'm able 2 get the right tools 4 the job kdkdjndg i wanna do game commentary and maybe reviews) but like!! do u mind explaining each of the points in crude detail?? i already know abt most of them as well, but just 2 be sure!! ty :D
I'm HONORED you'd consider making a video about my chart! However, I had some problems with answering this as Tumblr would frequently delete all of my progress. I assume this is because of the answer simply being too long, which is why I'll try to tackle three layers at a time. I will add more parts of the explanation with every reblog. I'm truly sorry but this is the only option.
Just as a little refresher, here's the full chart! Explanations are under the cut because this is gonna be long >:)
Tumblr media
Alright let's get into this!
Layers 1 - 3:
Layer 1
-Seven games:
In total there's seven games in the Mario and Luigi series, five original titles (Superstar Saga, Partners In Time, Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam) and two remakes (Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Junior's Journey)
-Striped socks:
On the original artworks for the Mario and Luigi games, Luigi is seen wearing striped socks, something unique to this series. However, the socks haven't shown up in official artwork since Dream Team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Luigi running gag:
In the Mario and Luigi games there exists a common running gag that consists of Luigi being underestimated or completely forgotten by other characters. They'll often praise Mario while then either insulting or downplaying Luigi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Giant battles:
In Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team there exists a form of battles known as "giant battles", during which Bowser (in BIS) and Luigi (in DT) turn massive to face off against giant enemies. The player has to flip their DS/3DS horizontally and dodge/fire off attacks by tapping the touch screen. In Paper Jam, there's also a form of battles called "papercraft battles" in which the player controls giant paper figurines, looking similar to the game's characters.
-Superstar Saga on Switch:
On February 8th 2023, Nintendo announced the port of several GBA games to Nintendo Switch Online, with Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga being one of them. Superstar Saga is currently the only title to be playable on Switch.
Layer 2
-Fawful in PIT:
In PIT there exists an optional area right underneath Peach's castle, in which you can observe a mysterious hooded figure. If you follow them with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the person reveals himself to be Fawful, who quickly starts telling the babies about his plan for revenge. He starts getting more and more emotional during his speech, but tells the babies that there's no need to worry about him. The player can then pay Fawful with beans in exchange for rare badges. This scene foreshadowes the entirety of Bowser's Inside Story, in which Fawful takes over the Mushroom kingdom, making his plan reality.
Tumblr media
-The blorbs:
The blorbs are an illness that plagues the Mushroom Kingdom during the events of Bowser's Inside Story. If a Toad consumes a so called "Blorb Mushroom" they will get infected with the disease, causing their bodies to grow large and round, immobilizing them. The blorbs play an important role in the plot, as the illness is an important part of Fawfuls plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. During the end of the game, Dr. Toadley manages to get rid the blorbs, using the Miracle Cure.
-Luisley:
Luisley is the name of a popular ship in the M&L community. It is based on the idea of Luigi and Prince Peasley being in a romantic relationship. The game itself seems to heavily support this idea, as Peasley is often seen paying special attention to Luigi, and Luigi blushing when meeting the prince. This Tumblr post explains it in more detail.
-Gold beanie:
In Superstar Saga and Dream Team you can encounter enemies called Beanies. They're basically just green beans with and evil grin and tiny feet, and they're pretty easy to take down. However there exists a rare golden variant of these enemies, which have a high chance of fleeing every turn. Upon beating one, the playing receives a high amount of experience points as a reward.
-Alphadream filing for bankruptcy:
On October 1st, 2019, Alphadream, primarily known for their work on the Mario and Luigi series, filed for bankruptcy. This was most likely due to high development costs and bad revenue in return. What got the studio into that position in the first place probably were the bad sales of Superstar Saga's remake and Bowser Junior's Journey failing horrendously.
-No PIT remake:
While Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story both received remakes, Partners In Time didn't get to enjoy that treatment. This was most likely due to Inside Story having better sales in comparison and Alphadream wanting to remake the most popular game in the series. However, them skipping the second installment and remaking the third game instead, still seems a bit odd.
-Shroobish:
Shroobish is the language spoken by the Shroobs in Partners In Time. It is written in a different alphabet and is totally indecipherable. The game does translate some words and sentences for the player, most notably the word destroy.
-Beanish and beanies are related species:
This is a popular theory created by fans that isn't mentioned in the game itself. The theory is based on the fact that Beanish and beanies share a lot of similarities, for example wide grins and green skin tone. The theory states that Beanish used to look similar to beanies, but evolved over time into what we know them as today.
Layer 3
-Cover art style change:
Superstar Saga as well as Partners in Time both have very detailed designs for their box art, while from Bowser's Inside Story onward the design is kept much simpler, just having a white background with the characters placed on top of it. It is important to note that the American version of Superstar Saga's remake uses the modern style, while the European version is a direct callback to the original's box art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Paper Jam hate:
Paper Jam is easily the least popular game in the series. This is due to the game's lack of original characters and story telling, which makes it stand out negatively when compared to the rest of the series. It had big potential, being a crossover with the Paper Mario series, but barley incorporated any of its elements, ending up as a rather boring M&L title, with Paper Mario as a playable character.
-Carrot minigame:
The carrot minigame is one of the many minigames present in Bowser's Inside Story and it's remake. Due to it's precise touch screen controls it is notoriously frustrating and difficult to beat, especially for younger players, slowly making it gain kind of a meme status amongst the community.
-Cacklebean:
Much like Luisley, Cacklebean is another popular ship in the M&L community, this time pairing Cackletta with Queen Bean. The idea is often backed up by Cackletta seemingly having a lot of knowledge about Beanbean Castle and its secrets, such as the security system surrounding the Beanstar. Queen Bean and the residents of the Beanbean Kingdom also never seem to mention Cackletta in any negative light whatsoever, often just insulting Fawful instead of her.
-Yoko Shimomura:
Yoko Shimomura is a Japanese composer primarily known for her work in video games, including the Mario and Luigi series. She also composed for games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Starts and Kingdom Hearts.
-Headcanons:
This is a more community focused entry. Fans of the Mario and Luigi series often have a lot of different headcanons, some just adding more depth to certain characters while others change the story in its entirety. Since everyone's headcanons are different, everyone perceives the games differently and every fan stands out in their own unique and special way. Some popular headcanons include Cackletta being Fawfuls adoptive mother, Popple and Fawful being brothers or Peasley being gay.
-SSS difficulty spike:
The original version of Superstar Saga is kind of notorious for having a really weird difficulty spike with the game being pretty easy over all but then suddenly raising the difficulty out of nowhere before having it decrease again. Some examples of this are Wiggler and Trunkle going down in just a few hits while having much harder battles before and after them, Cackletta in Woohoo Hooniversity being a pretty tough challenge for this point of the game all while having the difficulty decrease again seconds later, and of course the final boss being absurdly hard and coming out of nowhere with the game refusing to prepare you for it at all.
-Popple is suffering from memory loss:
When encountering Popple in Dream Team, he does not recognize Mario and luigi at all, despite mentioning how he had trouble with people looking extremely similar back when he was still in the Beanbean Kingdom.
-Geno in the Fungitown arcade:
In Little Fungitown, the player will encounter Geno from Super Mario RPG while playing the Star 'Stache Smash minigame, where he will moderate the game and explain the rules. Geno is absent from the remake due to him not being owned by Nintendo.

This one amazing anime you have probably never heard about
Tumblr media
You know what? After talking a bit with a friend about this anime, I really gotta tell you guys about it.
For fucks sake: Watch Basquash. Yes, the show is more than a decade old, but fucking nobody watched it back when it was released, because people were too put off by the concept of the show to give it a chance. But literally I know few anime who understood the issues around capitalism and how it destroys the world better than this one did.
If you have heard about the show, you will probably know it as "the anime where mechas play basketball and some women have giant tits". Which... Both is true. But it also does not capture the essence of this show at all.
Let me tell you what the show is actually about.
Dan JD lives on the planet Earth Dash. He mostly does small time crime, trying to collect the money to allow his sister to travel to the moon. Because the rich people all live on the moon, which is why the moon has much better technology. This also includes medicine. And Dan's sister, Coco, was once a gifted basketball player, but through an accident became wheelchair bound. The technology on the moon could fix her legs. When Dan's childhood friend Miyuki returns from the moon with one of the mechas responsible for Coco's accident, Dan uses it for quite a bit of chaos - and incidentally starts Bigfoot Street Basketball through it, later known as Basquash.
And yes, you can kinda see the basics of the capitalist criticism in this short description. But believe me, that only scratches the surface. Because oh boy, this anime is basically just one big metaphor on how capitalism destroys the world - and how the lack of social mobility might well be the reason that the people who might have the skill to save us never get access to the kind of techology they would need for it.
I am going to explain under the cut - because of spoilers. I think the show is very much enjoyable even with the ending spoiled, but if you just wanna watch it... Go ahead. Please. Do yourself the favor and watch it!
Okay, let me talk a bit more about what actually is going on in this show.
For the destruction he commits in the first episode, Dan gets send to prison, though he gets out two years later. He kinda get into steering one of the mechas (called "big foots" in this world) himself and quickly starts to figure out how to use the thing to actual play basketball. And indeed, his stuff in the first episode lead a lot of people to play "street basketball" with those mechas.
Even though he had been in prison, someone shows up to want to sponsor Dan with this new sport. In fact, quite a lot of people become interested in how Dan plays the sport. And for the first bit we just have them play the sport, travel a bit, see different parts of the world.
Now, there is ton of capitalist commentary going on during this first half of the show, too. But nothing compared to the second half.
Because around the halfway mark we learn, why people are so interested in Bigfoot Street Basketball, aka Basquash. And this reason is that for a while now the moon has been put out of orbit, because the rich people build their city all on this one location, making the moon much heavier on one side. And this will lead to the moon crashing into earth, killing everyone.
Now, of course rich people could have changed the way they behaved or stuff - but they didn't. Instead they banked on a prophecy about a chosen one with the ability to move orbits with a glowing ball. And because the basketballs that Dan throws start to glow, everyone assumes he is the chosen one and can save them. So, basically they can keep on going like they do and he is just going to save them.
But there is two issues. For one, they cannot be sure about it. For two, he is a little anarchist.
Which is why the backup plan is to genetically engineer a chosen one.
Never the less, in the end they have Dan there, trying to do the thing that would push the moon back into orbit and... he fails. Because it turns out, yeah, he wasn't the chosen.
We never learn, who is the actual chosen, but the series strongly implies that it would have been Coco. Who gave up basketball when she became wheelchair bound.
Now mind you, the show is actually fairly good about this. Because Coco herself is happy with where she is in life. She has become a writer, she likes writing, and she is frankly annoyed that Dan only cares about "fixing" her disability.
But yeah, she might have been the one to save the world - and she was not in the position to do that, because her economic circumstances basically made it that she could not access the kind of care she would have needed to fulfill that role.
And this is just... the amount of metaphor going on that I really cannot help but bow to. This is AMAZING writing.
Of course, in the end the world is still saved, because everybody realizes that waiting for the one legendary chosen hero is bullshit anyway and everybody should work together to find a solution, which they do and manage to save everyone.
But... Yeah, fuck. This show is so good. And it is just very unfair that because of the concept people just never watched it.
Oh, and also: This series has one of the most banger soundtracks ever. Just listen to the fucking ending.

I'm sorry to be dumb, but did I miss something? Who is Hokmah?
That was just a little detour Jack-rambling with a friend. :-)
Tumblr media
For the little girl that appears in the Occultum garden in 15x13 Destiny's Child, I was trying to think of a cosmic force she could represent that isn't Eve, and I landed on a personification of Hokhmah/Hokmah/Chokmah, "Lady Wisdom."
You didn't miss anything. She's not called that in the show! @13x02 and I were just playing with the idea over here. :D
You'll get a decent condensed Western overview here on Cengage that I like pretty well, but "she's" a complicated theological point of interest if you wanna crawl through more academic scholarly sources.
I think you can shape her in a very positive way. Jack saw Wisdom! He regained his Soul!
////
But on a darker note, I think a negative view of Lady Wisdom has enormously evil implications for the destruction of the Cas-Dean-Jack family unit in the finale, leaving only Sam's "pure, idealized, almost Noah-esque" family in its wake.
In terms of poetry, Lady Wisdom can signify the idea of a perfect woman and ideal mate. As a point of contrast, the non-ideal mate is depicted as "the path of the Strange Woman," who carries you into Folly."
Both the wife and Wisdom protect their mates from the dangerous "strange woman," who lures the unsuspecting man into sexual misadventure (Prv. 5:20–23, 7:5–23, cf. 2:26–19). Social commentary regarding proper family bonds finds expression here...
I think that's echoed in 15x17 Unity's horrific depiction of Seraphina and Adam, who make out incessantly, are stoned out of their minds, and obsessed with Revenge and Fate. Adam even gives birth to an unnatural "revenge-baby" whose intent is Destruction. It's God who's supposed to yank out ribs and do Divine Fatherhood, not angels.
Now, in actuality, there's noting wrong with a little PDA or getting high, but Adam and Seraphina's sudden intrusion into the story combined with Chuck's apparent knowledge of the rib-bomb ("Have fun watching him [Jack] die.") seems ominous.
I think the grotesque caricatures of Seraphina-Adam reveal what Chuck truly thinks about the Dean-Cas partnership. (Of course, Chuck takes no responsibility for driving Seraphina and Adam to their desperation either...)
Anyway, Seraphina is Folly. So is Cas. It's true that Cas and Dean are in a pretty negative feedback loop at this point in the story, but Chuck, as usual, is painting it in rip-roarin' 2D. With a dash of disrespectful disdain.
Other poems use the female imagery to constitute competing superhuman forces. The path of the strange woman, who appears as personified Folly in the concluding poem of Proverbs 1–9, leads to death: "her guests are in the depths of Sheol" (Prv. 9:18, cf. 2:18–19, 5:5–6, 5:23, 7:27). Wisdom, in contrast, offers life, an offer whose credibility is enhanced by the remarkable poem in Proverbs 8.
So, here is Chuck's judgment, perhaps. Cas is a rival superhuman force that is unnaturally taking Dean away from Him. (Early in season 15, Lilith tells us that Chuck has "a pervy obsession" with Dean, so it's a very unsettling tug-of-war here.) Cas might even be aware of it, as he uses the alias Clarence Worley in 15x06, post-Chuck confrontation (and Cas has become pretty pop-culture savvy).
It's a power struggle. Chuck paints his rival-God sons as the "Strange Women" to His Own Divine Ultimate Fatherhood, the same way he brands Michael as "cuck." Chuck does not tolerate individualism from his sons, and so uses emasculating language. Furthermore, he does not value feminine three-dimensionality, as shown by how he treats Amara’s wisdom. She too is painted “Strange,” because his perspective of individuals rings hollow. Amara does not fit Chuck’s restrictive, mental stereotype of Hokmah.
In the finale, Dean is "Chuck-downgraded" from the masculine Adam to the Woman in the Gray Robe, and then, her tongue gets cut out. (Chuck’s “mirrors” usually favor Dean as the masculine Marlboro man.) It's...hmmm. Quite sadistic, really, what happens to Dean. It shows how 2D and hierarchical Chuck treats gender. Also, Dean loved Cas. If Dean didn't love Cas back, this death would have been more heroic and less...maudlin and back-stabby, I think. (There’d have been no need for bury your gays.)
In terms of modern society, Cas is actually more strange than Seraphina. He's a superhuman force in the shape of a man. He's diametrically opposed to Chuck's idea of Hokhmah, which is in fact the Idea of Blurry Wife. Chuck wants traditional, picture-perfect wives: he wants Lisa and Amelia and fake!Mary and Blurry Wife. Not strange women like Rowena or Eileen or worse—ursurper figures like Lucifer, Michael, Castiel, or Jack.
I clumsily talk about this idea of the Nephilim family unit in the tablet meta as well as the idea of joining/sundering Heaven and Earth in this forbidden love meta, but I think what I want to say is that Cas represents both the poetic specter of Strange Path/Folly and the Corrupt Idea of the Unnatural, Enochian Sire of a Nephilim.
Some believe the fallen angels who sired the Nephilim were cast into Tartarus (2 Peter 2:4, Jude 1:6) (Greek Enoch 20:2), a place of "total darkness."
Sounds a lot like the Empty, huh?
///
Tumblr media
Is Blurry Wife Chuck's approved idea of Hokmah? Perhaps. Seems like The Perfect Sam-Fam is network-approved!
It's a twisted idea, isn't it? That the "impure" Nephilim family was Washed Away leaving only this bizarrely cookie-cutter, picturesque one in its wake. Jack was born on Washaway beach, and Dean and Cas became increasingly paired with flood and water motifs as the relationship escalated.
So anyway, this negative view of Lady Wisdom can in fact carry us all the way through the finale and the destruction of the human-angel Nephilim family unit. Because of this, the finale echoes on a homophobic note that reverberates through most who see it, even when they can't put their finger on why it feels that way.
Cas, Jack, and Dean are buried.
Cas is thrown into the Empty/Darkness, like the legendary Fallen Sires of the Nephilim. (He even exits through a punishment symbol, a pair of handcuffs.) Jack becomes like the Nephilim before him, a cursed untethered spirit, barred from existing in an earthly body. Then, there's Dean, the human partner, who is stabbed in the back in a brutal Execution and cursed to wander in search of the connection he is disallowed from having (that's what The Winchesters feels like, no?).
It's wicked.
///
Further reading:
This has a nice chapter on Hokhman, which goes into some of the root words used in the poems themselves. (It's chapter 6.)

𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐍!
★  NAME:  Luan
★  PRONOUNS: He/Him/Dude/Bro/My guy/etc.
★  BEST EXPERIENCE: I... honestly can't think of any? I've had more bad experiences than good. Maybe I'd say when I finally found my footing with independent OCs with Izren and ended up buddies with Bear and his whole entourage of writing partners. I've joined up on Discord servers with people I write with in the past, but I've never had fun like we do on his server. Plus we play D&D!
★  PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION: Discord is my go-to if you wanna reach me. I use Tumblr IMs too, though with how they're about as functional as a Bethesda game, I often ask if we can move over to DMs.
I've got my Discord tab open 24/7 on both my laptops, plus I have the app on my phone. I lurk a lot. But nine times outta ten, I'm more of a reactive replier, almost always messaging back rather than messaging first.
★  MOST ACTIVE MUSE: Kouki, always. Getting into the mood with him is so stupidly easy. Put on any rock music, think about any series, play a video game, whatever- and there's always something that makes me do that Leo pointing meme and think "Hey, that gives me ideas for that white-haired little gremlin!"
★  EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS: I've honestly lost track lmao. Ballpark estimate is 11-13 years since I started around 2010 to 2013, with my intro to roleplaying being those ancient Quotev quizzes and the chatroom website Chatzy. If I remember correctly, my first actual RP was either in a Sonic chatroom or a Naruto chatroom. And I've never even watched Naruto- I was going on nothing other than the Fandom Wiki. You could even say that my cringe-worthy OC there was the first iteration of Kouki. Only reason I still remember that chat was one of my writing partners died of some terminal illness. Basically drowned in her own blood.
After that, I moved here to Tumblr. It started with Pokemon blogs... then Steven Universe (where I saw them actively out-toxic the MLP fanbase and drive them out of the fanbase)... then I was the sole Soul Calibur roleplayer... then I made a Skyrim OC based on the Kid Dragonborn mod... then I fell back onto Naruto and joined the fanbase here with more cringy OCs... made my other, still on-going Pokemon blog about eight-ish years ago... joined the JJBA fandom, which was and still is the best fandom I ever joined... then I joined the RWBY fandom... then the BNHA fandom... and now we're here!
★  RP PET PEEVES:
I'm gonna cheat a bit and leave two of Bear's peeves, if only because he completely hits the nail on the head. There's just no better way to put it without rehashing things.
Excessive commentary blogging. Before it was just a lot of dash commentary that had me going 'eh'. But in recent years it's gone past that. I've become disenchanted with blogs that become largely commentary for whatever it is they're doing on Discord. All power to those Discord groups doing what they do! But it reaches a point for me that I don't really see them as indie, and it can feel insurmountable trying to interact with them if you're not entangled with their zig-zagging plotlines.
Blog hoppers. Because for a slow burner and long hauler like myself, they're the most impossible people to write with! Which is a shame, because a lot of the hoppers I come across do seem to have some writing talent to them!
Fandom RP events. When I was younger, I used to love the idea of these big events with their own plotlines and moving parts that anyone could participate in if they wanted to. Galas, holiday parties, festivals- stuff like that.
That lasted until 2018, when I kickstarted Bernadotte's original JJBA blog and brought back my long-running Pokemon blog. In the span of something like 5 months, eight separate RP events happened back-to-back in just the JJBA fandom alone. You can only try to participate and be entirely ignored for so long before it sours your whole outlook.
And I mean entirely. I remember writing twelve different starters that people asked for, responding to numerous open threads and starters, liking many different event starter calls, sending asks- the whole shebang. Not even once did I get anything back. If you enjoy fandom RP events, more power to you. But I've been burned too many times to even want to try.
★   PLOTS OR MEMES: Doesn't matter to me! Either way is great! Back in the day, I relied heavily on memes without any ideas for plot, just sending in whatever sounded like something my muse would say. Basically "Oops! All Memes!" Now? I put more thought into things. Overthink things too.
Receiving memes? I almost always ask if there was a reason or an idea driving my partners to send in that specific thing 'cause you never know, y'know? They usually do. But it really doesn't matter to me if they do or don't. I'm just happy to write with y'all.
★  ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: There's a little bit of me in every one of my muses! An example off the top of my head? Kouki is based on how I was as a kid his age. Corbin was inspired by my high school years, my love for old books and poetry, and my music tastes. My Pokemon OC was straight-up a self-insert when I started that blog. Tino came from my RWBY days and my absolute love for weaponry.
They've all got fragments of me in 'em!
tagged by: @dcviated Thanks bear! tagging: @pluviacuratio, @boomermania, @remunporium, @caestusvulpes, @fctedivided, @monmuses, and anybody else that wants to do it!

Man, I wanna find out what Disco Elysium is really about. Like look it up, or play it maybe.
Cause it started to come across my dash a bit ago, when a mutual reposted a lot of fanart. And I love the character design, and the art style, so I liked it, and now it comes around again and again on my For You. And I've picked up so much and yet so little and it's so interesting.
Every decision you make is a dice roll. It's a highly politically influenced game. There is no right or wrong decisions, just ones you make and their consequences. Even if the success chance is easy, you'll probably fail. Even if it's hard, you'll succeed. Your clothes affect the little voices in your head. The voices in your head are the different facets of your humanity. You remember fuck all. You're just a stupid old man in the most affectionate way. Your partner is cool as fuck. He's patient with you, despite everything. He's dying inside because he has to deal with each of your fuck ups. He is gay as hell. Somehow you both are police. You never wear an actual proper detectives uniform. There's an area called the homosexual underground which is funny as hell to me. The game is profound and in your face in a way you don't see too often. The game can and will call you out in its commentary. You have a little froggy visor. This game is an odd statement I can't wrap my head around from the scraps I've seen. There's a little bastard (affectionate) kid named Cuno.
I just. I have little to no idea about what this game is about, and yet I know so much about it. And it's striking a weird fucking chord in my chest. I love these characters, and yet I don't know them. It's just. It's so profound.

16. what’s the best way to approach you to start playing together?
However you feel most comfortable!
You can IM me and we can talk for a bit, or if you're too shy or not quite ready to talk, I totally got you! You can just send me a random ask, or send me a prompt if I've reblogged a set of them recently! Or--and, admittedly, these are my favorites--you can tag me in me a random starter! Whether it's a one-liner, or dash commentary, or a full-on novel, that's totally up to you! I'll meet you and match your writing style. If you got icons, I got icons, if not, it's all good dude!

KNOWING YOUR PARTNER WELL CAN POTENTIALLY MAKE WRITING TOGETHER A LOT EASIER. ( REPOST DO NOT REBLOG ! )
✿ NAME:   aid! what i’m most known as, shorthand for Asuraid which is just my online handle in most places.
✿ PRONOUNS:   she / her!
✿ PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION:   mmm, mostly thru tumblr IMs / post replies? obvs discord is the best, but because i’m so low spoons for social energy i am a lot more picky with adding people there. :[
✿ NAME OF MUSE(S):   sylvie and my gaymer boy oc! tho i’m not very active on him, i do still have access to his account.
✿ EXPERIENCE/HOW LONG (MONTHS / YEARS?):   uhh, overall i started roleplaying when i was around 12-13 on devART, moving onto tumblr circa 2013 ( so i was around uh ... 14ish? ). so i’ve been writing on here for almost a decade at this rate LMAO ...
✿ PLATFORMS YOU’VE USED:   skype, discord, tumblr, devART, iphone messages, msn for like one person ... never tried my hand at forums, or rather i did early on and dropped it because the format was odd for me w/multiple people going on at once.
✿ BEST EXPERIENCE:   honestly getting to meet the people i talk to now, esp @afacere since we’ve been at the hip for years now; a lot of Hideki has been influenced by her, and we’ve been each other’s friend support pillars for years. honestly, taking the plunge to bring sylvie to tumblr ( since i had been in a heavy hiatus at that point off hideki ) also counts here.
✿ RP PET PEEVES/DEALBREAKERS:   tiny fonts, tiny themes / docs / carrds ... thankfully it’s not terribly prevalent but sometimes i do come across some of them where you either can’t read the text well because it’s too small, or it’s too blended into the background / too contrasting, so it hurts to look at, or the background is misaligned to the text box because other resolutions werent taken into account and i wanna bite my own arm off because it’s like ... pls. this is what ppl see first and where your primary info is. thankfully, dash view mitigates it for themes, but it makes me take -10 hp of damage.
✿ FLUFF, ANGST OR SMUT:   mmm, i guess fluff? mostly just due to sylvie’s personality, i do tend to lean more into silly light-hearted stuff. angst i do enjoy but it’s harder for me to write just cause i’m slow and for angst i really need to do it in the moment of it happening to feel it. smut ... i dont write on here ueueueue. sylvie does fucc tho.
✿ PLOTS OR MEMES:   memes, mostly because over the years i feel like i’ve lost my brain for generating plots. not that im not up for it!!! im just ... very, very very slow and work off spontaneous stuff better ( and discussing stuff more in depth ooc ). i bounce better off an existing base rather than no base.
✿ LONG OR SHORT REPLIES:   mostly short since im often pretty tired, so dash commentary is pretty prevalent. that’s not to say im not open to long replies!!! i enjoy writing them, they just take a lot of spoons for me the longer they are ... though sometimes stuff unintentionally gets long because sylvie rambles.
✿ BEST TIME TO WRITE:   whenever my brain doesn’t feel like death ... it really is sporadic, though most of my writing time ends up being at night because that’s when it’s the quietest and i’m free ( ... almost, my parents are playing a loudass movie rn even at 1am ). otherwise i do just write when i feel the muse for it.
✿ ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S):   to a degree? it’s hard not to put aspects of yourself in an oc, even if subconsciously. sylvie is more-so what i aspire to be in confidence, but we do have some overlap ... especially in our humour. their unfiltered thoughts are my unfiltered thoughts, but i just have a filter to keep them in LMAOOO. we also deviate off topics very easily and ramble about things.

Hello there! I forgot if I asked this before (my apologies if I did, I don't mean to rush you, take all the time you need), but I was wondering if you were able to possibly continue of have a part two for that one request where Star stumbled upon Sam and Danny playing bowling. I really enjoyed it, and would love to see more. Thanks!
I take prompts within reason but literally never expect me to write it within any reasonable amount of time because ho boy
The first part mentioned in the post
But why Sam? Out of all girls in town? Well, ghosts were spooky, makes sense that they’d attach themselves to goths like moths to a light. Did that mean the ghost boy hung out with a lot of local goths? No...surely at least one of them would have spilled the beans.
Star stared off into nothing as she thought, only-half listening to her boyfriend’s commentary on the game. While she wasn’t looking at anything in particular, the popular teen couldn’t help but let her gaze fall into the loser trio’s direction. They were a few lanes down from them, bowling. Why they were in public being losers was beyond her. Especially knowing that Sam’s basement had a bowling alley.
Danny bowled, and he did an excited jump, saying something to the other losers. He had gotten a strike. This was his third one. Valerie had told her he was good at bowling, but she didn’t really ever think much about it. Her cousin was sulking, as normal for her weird, goth self. Sam glanced in her direction, and they met eyes. Star looked away to stare at her own game. Paulina was up, and as normal, she wasn’t a very good bowler. She got a gutter and was complaining to Dash about it.
Star lightly sipped a milkshake to avoid needing to reply, until Kwan finally snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Hey, Starlight? You okay?” he questioned. She glanced at him, and she shrugged.
“Just lost in thought,” she replied honestly.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Kwan was always such a sweetie, and Star couldn’t help but smile.
“It’s just some weird family stuff I can’t quite figure out,” she confessed. It was Kwan’s turn to steal a glance at the loser trio.
“Something happen with Sam?” he asked quietly. Kwan was the only one who knew the cousin connection, and he only knew because her parents had accidentally told him. If anybody besides Kwan, who for some reason really liked Sam, knew that she was cousins with that goth freak, her social life would be over.
“...Sorta.” Star went back to watching them. The three had seemingly completely stopped their game, instead exchanging looks to each other.
And suddenly, they completely abandoned their game.
She didn’t even hide her confusion as she watched them simply...leave. As a group, with their game not even half over and leaving behind nothing, still in their bowling shoes, collectively going towards the back door. Where were they going? They had to be coming back, Sam would have never dared to leave her favorite pair of boots behind.
Kwan noticed too.
“What’s up with them?” he asked.
“I have no idea,” she mused. She stood up. “I’m going to go see. Just bowl for me if you want, or Dash can.”
“Gotcha!” Kwan nodded. “Let me know if you need help.”
“I can handle a goth,” Star lightly joked, smiling as she began to make her way towards them.
Sam was the last in line to exit out the back door, but she had seen Star coming for her, and she paused. She turned to her friends, saying something Star couldn’t make out before shutting the door on them. Sam turned to stare at Star as she approached, frowning.
“What the fuck is with you?” Sam demanded to know the second Star was close enough. “You’ve been super weird since Saturday. You actually texted me. You never text me.”
“Well yeah,” Star scoffed, crossing her arms. “I saw you and Phantom bowling together, and now you’re here? Bowling again?”
“Will you stop that?” Sam grumbled. Her hands went to her hips. “I was home alone all Saturday until you and Aunt Rene showed up. Nothing happened. Stop spreading false rumors just because you need a popularity boost in your prep crowd.”
“I don’t need anything from you,” Star replied. “Besides the truth I mean. Something’s going on. I wanna know what it is.”
“Nothing’s going on,” Sam argued. “Why are you so hung up on this?”
“Because I know I saw something! I heard something!” Star insisted. She jumped, and Sam flinched as a loud crashing noise came from above.
Star jerked her head to the ceiling, but saw nothing. She glanced at Sam, seeing her cousin stare worriedly above. It was obviously ghosts, any Amity Park resident could tell you that much.
...Is that why Sam and her friends were eager to go? To see the ghosts? How did they know that there was a ghost fight going on before anybody else? That had to mean that her weird loser friends knew Phantom too. But Fenton’s parents hunted ghosts, didn’t they? They were the weirdos in town that wore jumpsuits everywhere. Maybe they had a tracker device?
“We should leave,” Star spoke up. “Ghosts are dangerous.” She could have sworn that she saw Sam roll her eyes.
“I’m sure it’s fine,” Sam just seemed to brush off the danger. There were hard thuds on the ceiling, making the room shake, and Star flinched.
“That doesn’t sound fine,” Star frowned.
Sam opened her mouth to reply, only for the ceiling to completely collapse as a ghost rammed inside. Star flew back a few feet from the impact, doing a roll as she was only stopped by the railing that separated the main floor from the bowling lanes. All the lights had gone out, and she could hear people scrambling for the exit.
She looked up to see a full black ghost with its hands around Phantom’s neck, pressing him into the ground. Phantom kicked the ghost off, blasting him with some kind of green energy she had seen him use several times before the ghost screeched in pain, letting go of him and slithering off into the darkness of the bowling alley.
“Are you okay?” Phantom’s voice asked, and Star immediately panicked. Sam.
She rushed over to see Phantom phasing Sam out from under some rubble, moving her away a few feet behind the bowling shoes counter. Star fell to her knees next to them. Sam looked dirty and had a few immediate scraps and bruises that began to form. Her foot was the worst. She couldn’t tell so much in the dark, but Star knew something was off.
“I got her,” Star assured the ghost. He looked at her, almost...quizzingly. “She’s my cousin, I’ll ride with her to the hospital and call Aunt Pam.”
Phantom blinked in absolute awe, glancing between her and the goth with disbelief. Well, it probably was kind of hard to believe. They were nothing alike. He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it. Why was he so hung up on that?
“Wait, what?”
Sam scowled, grabbing Phantom by the collar and yanking him to her.
“Danny, go stop the damn ghost already!” she snapped at him. Danny? Oh, right. Danny Phantom. So weird that Fenton and Phantom shared a name. Well, Danny wasn’t that uncommon. They had several Dannys in their grade.
Phantom broke out of his stupor, and he nodded. He took her hand off him, and he lightly squeezed it. Like they knew each other. It was subtle, but Star saw the touch and that brief look of intimate concern for her.
“Get out,” he spoke to Star, and he soon jumped over the counter, and back into the action.
Star watched his leap, before she returned to Sam. With Phantom gone, Sam seemed to finally break a little. She had tears in her eyes now, and she gave a hard sniffle as she tried to not openly cry. Family rivalry was brushed aside, and Star leaned in to hug her. Surprisingly, one of Sam’s arms wrapped around her in a light hug back.
“Come on,” Star said quietly. She let go, and she got to her knees, staying squatted next to her cousin. Sam stared at her, lip quivering.
“I’m not going to be able to walk,” she complained quietly.
Another glance at the injury, and well, yeah. No way Sam was walking on that kind of a twisted ankle.
“It’s okay,” Star soothed. “I’ll help.”
Star glanced around, seeing the ghost fight finally be taken out of the bowling alley and back outside. The emergency exit they were by before was completely blocked, and several lanes had been torn up. But at least it was ghost-free from the immediate looks of it.
She sighed with relief, standing up before holding her hands out to Sam. She pulled Sam to her foot, quickly shifting as they put their arms around each other’s shoulder. Sam leaned into her, and Star wrapped her arm around her waist, and they began to slowly make their way out, staying hugged along the wall.
“Star! Sam!” The girls snapped their head towards Kwan, who had rushed up to them. He looked a bit disheveled, mostly dirty more than anything else, and he was glancing at them, concerned. “Are you guys hurt?”
“Sam hurt her ankle pretty bad,” Star explained. Kwan glanced down, and he paled a bit.
“It looks bad,” he replied bluntly. Star glanced down, seeing the injury truly in better light. Kwan was right. It did look bad. She didn’t realize until now that Sam was actually bleeding from her ankle too, and that the blood was on her cousin’s tights as well as some on Star’s pants. “Here, let me.”
Kwan shifted to pick Sam up bridal style, and Star immediately rushed for the door to open it for him. Kwan carried her with ease outside, where police cars were already pulling up. Star waved an officer down as he was exiting his car.
“We need an ambulance!” she called out. The officer just nodded, speaking into his radio as he came over.
“What’s the damage?” the officer asked.
“My ankle,” Sam replied, lightly lifting up the injured foot in question. Now in the full bright light of the day, Star was absolutely sure that it was broken. The boot hid her foot, but it was at an odd angle that feet just didn’t bend at.
“Come over here,” the officer instructed. He motioned for them to follow him as he took a few steps back towards a bench. “Set her down here.”
Kwan did just that, with the officer’s help, putting Sam sitting down on the bench. Sam gave a small groan of pain as her foot brushed against the ground as she was transferred.
“Did you call your parents yet?” the officer asked. Sam shook her head no.
“I’ll call them,” Star promised. The officer nodded.
“Star, please call Grandma Ida,” Sam pleaded. Star glanced at her. “Mom’ll flip out.”
“I’ll see if I can reach Grandma first,” Star promised. She pulled her phone out, scrolling for her contact, and she rang up their grandma.
She answered, and Star quickly filled her in on the details, even though her mind was still thinking back to Sam and Phantom. Things were still way too weird. They way they looked at each other, Phantom’s reaction to the family connection. They knew each other. Star just knew it.

an honesty meme for muns
11.) What do you know now about rp that you wish you knew when you first started?
To utilize the queue system with replies. Seriously. It spaces them out nicely so,
A) I'm not just dumping them out as soon as I complete them - which also runs the risk of me getting an immediate reply back (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can lead to me feeling burnt out a little easier cause a reply I spent hours on got replied to within an hour, and then I feel like shit for not being as fast as my partner) B) It keeps a steady stream of activity going on my blog so when I have days where I don't like being very intensely active, or active at all, there's still something happening so I don't feel like poop about it C) To me, it eliminates the illusion of favoritism between my partners that can be perceived in reply frequency. Yes I may still play with some persons more often than others in the quick, little "dash commentary" one-off threads, but if everyone is on the trickle system with replies that have expanded or are taking longer than a single session then I'm clearly no longer playing favoritism when everybody gets tickled replies.
36.) What’s one thing that other people seem to hate that doesn’t bother you?
People interacting with my posts. While I completely understand why it's a point of frustration for some people, I genuinely couldn't care less if anybody likes or reblogs my posts - whether they're my follower or not. In fact, I actually like it when people do interact with my posts because I'm a kinda old school and I like having a note count on my posts. I like being seen and interacted with. It's a form of validation to me, like yes this is/was a good post! Excellent!
But I've always been that whore too who wants to have a well loved blog. Not to say that my blogs aren't loved, but I still have that dream every role player has of being regularly poked at by anons and other players on the daily. I've never reached that "peak" and I just wanna have it, ya know?

Hey gang I made a Promare fic if anyone has seen that! It’s my obsession atm so here ya go:
Galo Thymos woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs drifting through the loft and smiled. Today was a special day, and he was already being surprised. He wandered into the kitchen to find Lio in a loose shirt and boxers holding a frypan over a hand omitting a small blossom of pink flames. Lio glanced up from his cooking and a small smile spread across his face.
“Is our stove broken?” Galo asked.
“I haven’t been using my flames enough, they’re getting restless.” Lio explained.
They sat together at the dining table, eating at a leisurely pace with no job to be at all weekend. The only place they had to be was at an island resort much later in the day for a long awaited holiday.
“Have you finished packing?” Lio checked.
“Are you kidding, I finished that last night!” Galo answered as he passionately devoured Lio’s cooking.
“No, you haven’t, your swimsuit was still in the draw this morning.” Lio pointed out.
“Right!” Galo noted. “This is going to be so fun! We’ll go swimming! In the sea! And we’ll play volleyball on the beach! And we’ll eat so much food! There’s a couples’ dance class at the resort, too!”
“Can you even dance?”
“Wanna see?”
“No, you’ll hurt my eyes.”
Galo grabbed a pillow off a couch close behind him and threw it at Lio’s head.
They finished packing and set off after breakfast, Galo in a straw hat and colourful button up shirt, Lio in his usual all-black getup. The bus trip to the ferry terminal was sunny and Galo was buzzing with excitement. He and Lio rested their heads on each other’s shoulders, staring contently out the window. The ferry terminal was like another world. Lio squinted against the wind that blew his hair in his face. The waves were capped with foam, and clouds lined the horizon.
“Did you check the weather before you planned this trip?” Lio asked, staring apprehensively at the port.
“No, why would I?” Galo shrugged. Lio took out his phone and opened the weather app. Whatever he saw caused him to literally burst into flames. Travellers around them screamed and hurried to put space between them. Somewhere in the terminal a child started crying.
“It says there are storms all weekend, you idiot!” Lio cried, showing Galo the neat row of lightning symbols on his phone.
“Cool it, firebug!” Galo whispered, glancing around nervously. “It’s just a little surprise! Besides, weather reports are never accurate, anyway!”
“You really don’t think ahead, huh.” Lio muttered bitterly, taking a deep breath and vanishing the fire.
“It’ll be fun, I promise! You know I’ll always find a way to make things fun!”
Lio glared at his lover, but the longer he glared, the harder it got to suppress the smile breaking out across his face.
“Let’s get going, then.” He took Galo’s hand and they continued towards the ferry.
The ferry ride was terribly rough. Galo marvelled at the view from the railing the entire time, eyes glued to the sea.
“Look at that wave!” He exclaimed, just as he had for every other wave. “Ooh, that one is like ‘whoosh’!” He wiggled his hands about in imitation. Lio was resting his head on the railing beside him instead of actually looking. “Are you good, Lio?”
Lio uttered a tiny moan as a response.
“Are you getting seasick?” Galo fretted, lightly placing a hand on his back. Lio nodded against the railing.
“Honestly, I don’t do well with motion....” he muttered weakly.
“It’s okay, we’ll be there soon!” Galo assured him, watching the overcast island in the distance.
Lio didn’t speak a single word after Galo’s reassurances, nor did he move. The clouds only got darker and the waves taller as they neared the island. Galo put a hand over Lio’s and felt how tightly it gripped the railing. He kept his hand there to ground him and continued his ongoing ocean commentary on the view Lio was missing.
When the boat docked, Lio finally straightened, looking incredibly pale and delicate.
“You really don’t look like you’re hanging in there...” Galo worried, squeezing his lover’s hand tightly.
“I’ll be fine, I just need to lie down for a bit when we get to the hotel.” Lio insisted bravely.
The second they stepped off the ferry, it began to pour rain. Galo burst into laughter at their misfortune.
“Now you look stupid in your beach outfit.” Lio remarked wryly, and Galo laughed even harder. Lio smiled weakly and snuggled into Galo’s arm. They walked quickly to a taxi queue, eager to escape the rain as soon as possible.
Much to Galo’s horror, the taxi took them swerving through a windy mountain range where they could barely see through the heavy rain. He helplessly watched Lio’s complexion begin to match his hair as their journey progressed. Every few minutes he offered hushed reassurances that they were almost there, stroking Lio’s hand with his thumb. Lio’s hand began to tremble beneath his as they were pulling into the grand driveway of the resort.
They were dropped off and elegantly suited doormen took their suitcases for them. Galo stared at the luxurious decor in awe. The staircase leading into the hotel was marble topped with a red carpet. Gold accents lined the doors and windows. Then Lio tore away to the nearby gardens, collapsing next to a rose bush in the rain.
“Oh, no...” Galo muttered. Lio sat there rigidly with a hand pressed to his mouth. “I’ll get us checked in!” He called, figuring it would make Lio’s life easier and that he would still be there when he got back.
Sure enough, Lio was still kneeling by the rose bush every time Galo glanced out the panoramic reception window while he waited in the queue. Even after they were checked in and Galo had been handed the key card, Lio still hadn’t moved. Galo stood by the window and watched in concern as Lio sat there getting drenched by the rain. He noticed a woman in a white sundress a metre from him staring wistfully at the miserable weather. Evidently, he wasn’t the only one who didn’t believe in reading weather reports.
“Great beach weather, huh!” Galo joked, always eager to lighten the mood.
“I have a boyfriend.” The woman responded flatly.
“Me too!” Galo beamed, pointing to the small man kneeling in the garden. “He’s about to throw up.” Right on cue, Lio’s back arched and he produced a vile torrent of sick. “Oop, that’s my cue to leave!”
Galo joined Lio in the rain, dashing over to make sure he was okay.
“Poor sweetie!” He cried, crouching in the wet grass beside his lover. Lio was shaking violently on all fours. Galo patted his back as he brought up another stream of sick, retching loudly. They were fortunate that the rain softened the awful process a bit, muffling the sounds and washing away the mess as it was made. “That’s the way, get it all up, Lio!”
Lio belched and heaved up the last of his breakfast. He convulsed and gagged helplessly as his stomach continued trying to rid itself of its perceived poison.
“Good job!” Galo encouraged. After endlessly gagging for a few more minutes, Lio finally sat back on his heels, letting the rain pour down his face for a moment. Then he slumped against Galo and buried his face in his shoulder. Galo took him into his arms. “Hey, it’s okay. You’re good.” Lio trembled in his arms. Whether it was from the vomiting or if he was crying, he wasn’t sure, but he held him all the same. “Poor baby!” he cooed.
Eventually, Galo convinced Lio to come inside. They dripped trails of water all the way to their hotel room, shivering and worn out from the cold in each other’s arms. They changed into dry clothes, and then Lio ignited pink flames in his palms.
“Lio, not here, you’ll set off the smoke alarms!” Galo scolded.
“It’s warm.” Lio defended.
Galo sat against the headboard of the queen sized bed and opened his arms. “You know what else is warm?” he prompted. Lio let the flames flare up for a moment, but ultimately chose to climb into Galo’s arms and snuggle against him.
“How are you feeling?” Galo asked, resting his chin on top of Lio’s damp hair.
“A lot better, but I need a nap.” he mumbled into Galo’s chest.
“We can take a nap together!” Galo declared.
“Sounds fun...”
Galo stroked his hair tenderly.
“Of all the people to be stuck indoors with, I’m glad it’s you... idiot...” Lio murmured, setting his heart ablaze once again. On second thought, everything Lio did made him glow inside several times per day.
“Me too.” Galo said, enjoying the rare moment of profoundness from his normally shy lover. They spent that afternoon nestled together and fell asleep to the sound of the rain.

I Think This Could Be the Start of a New Life (The Inc Den)
A/N: Oh hi 👋🏻. Here’s the first piece I guess. Figured I’d get everyone introduced. I hope you enjoy them because I love everyone dearly. so yeah.
Warnings: None? swearing I guess, but this is SFW
Summary: River would really like to stop being sexiled from their apartment.
Word Count: 4.5K
River was lounging on the couch in the main space of their apartment waiting for their roommate Lacey to come out of the bathroom. Literally lounging as one foot was propped up on the couch while the other stayed on the floor, careful to keep their still shoe wearing foot off the couch lest Nox or Lacey throw a fit. They were scrolling through their phone and half answering texts from their work group chat, Al and Roger debating pop music influences with commentary chimed in from time to time. They tapped their foot to some mental tune they were playing to keep themselves occupied, probably something that was on Drake’s playlist that they’d heard at work. River had to wonder if Nox was in the room and waiting for them to leave before coming out, but they were probably still curled up under Lacey’s bed. River threw their head back and let out a groan as they looked at the clock on their phone, Lacey’d been getting ready for nearly an hour.
“Lace, c’mon, do you want to get to Labyrinth before last call or not?” They called. They hardly remembered why they had agreed to accompany Lacey on her night out, she was just going to meet up with Scott and then sexile River from the apartment. Then River would have to call up Drake or Roger or Al and crash on their couch and they weren’t super keen on doing that tonight, their hips still hurt from the last time they’d had to. Lacey exited the bathroom with her red hair curled and her makeup done to perfection which was really impressive, River just wished it didn’t take an hour to do.
“Please tell me you’re not going out like that?” Lacey pleaded. River looked over their outfit: ripped jeans, Converse that had seen better days if the faded canvas and scuffed bottoms were any indication, and their “River’s Fight School” t-shirt that Lacey had made them after the “worst breakup she’d ever experienced” that had ended with River threatening to kick the ex’s ass. The outfit had been what they’d worn on shift and it’d been fine, mostly because unlike Roger, they never dressed to impress at the shop.
“I am, because may I remind you I’m not keen on impressing anyone. Besides, I wanna sleep comfortably on whatever couch I have to end up crashing on.” River replied with only a dash of bitterness sneaking into their tone. Lacey rolled her eyes and slid her boots on.
“Fine, fine, c’mon,” Lacey said. River stood up and grabbed their jacket off the couch arm.
“Nox, don’t tear the apartment apart!” River shouted into the apartment as they closed the door. Their typical parting words to the shadow monster who lived under Lacey’s bed.
The duo walked to Labyrinth with little fuss, minus Lacey occasionally twirling her hair around her finger. After six years of friendship, River knew that she was nervous about something.
“Are you and Scott okay?” They asked.
“What? Oh! Yeah, totally, work’s just been a pain and I’m… wait what —“
“You’re twirling your hair,” River said, miming the gesture by twisting their bangs out of their face. Lacey looked over at her finger and immediately dropped her hand.
“Damn you Rio,”
“You love me,” they were quick to interject with a smile. Lacey chuckled as they approached the bar. Frankie was standing outside and Lacey smiled up at the rakassha as she entered and River gave a mock salute. “Evenin’ Frankie,” they said and received a nod in response. River walked in and was almost smacked by the noise. Boys Don’t Cry was playing over the speakers as the bar and surrounding tables were crowded. As to be expected on a Friday night.
“Lacey Loo!” A male voice yelled from one of the side tables. Lacey grinned as she turned to greet the voice. Decked in a red plaid shirt and good jeans was Scott, the himbo werewolf boyfriend. He was a good guy, he and River got along when they hung out together, they were just… loud when it came to nightly extracurriculars, and that was before getting into the whole “is a werewolf” thing. River nodded that they were taking their leave as Lacey went over to Scott and they found themselves going to the bar. They waited for the bartender to finish dealing with some newbies as they took their seat in their usual stool. It was a miracle that as busy as the bar was, they managed to snag it. If River didn’t know any better, they might’ve thought that Chrissa was saving it for them. They watched the orc bartender work, she eventually turned around and seemed relieved to see River.
“Finally, someone easy,” she said with a sigh. River chuckled and smiled.
“Hey Chrissa, my usual?” They asked.
“One mildly large glass of Coca Cola, coming up.” She said as she pulled a glass and the soda gun. Chrissa filled it and slid it to River with a smile, garnished with its usual orange umbrella, a mental note to whoever came on shift after Chrissa or simply any passing waiter that River wasn’t drinking. They snuck a glance around the bar, trying to spot if there was anyone they knew hanging around. Other than Scott and Lacey cozied up in the corner, the answer seemed to be a resounding no, not that it wasn’t expected. River sighed and went back to focusing on Chrissa doing her work. They’d always had a fascination with watching the bartender work, it was always interesting, trying to follow Chrissa’s hands move and grab the bottles without thinking too hard about what they were, measuring the liquor with ease that only came from repeated movements and months of training before her first shift. Laurence had hired her after he got tired of working the bar himself, roughly around the same time River and Lacey had started frequenting the place when they first moved to the city.
Chrissa dealt with some customers at the other end of the bar before coming back in front of River.
“How was work by the way?” She asked. River shrugged in response.
“Wasn’t too bad, mostly just stayed in the basement with Drake.” They said, the record shop they worked at had a light dampened basement for those who didn’t do well with sunlight, which included their vampire coworker. River just liked it because it was usually a lot quieter than working the upstairs front counter. Even if Al sometimes sent the most ridiculous requests down to them.
“No wonder you’re so fucking pale,” Chrissa joked as she cleaned glasses. River just rolled their eyes.
“Hey, I’m pale because of a lot of reasons. The basement and Nox are just two of the reasons.” They remarked.
“How is Nox by the way?”
“Good, he’s mostly keeping to himself, deep cleaned the apartment the other day and I didn’t even know he could do that.”  River remarked with a chuckle. Nox didn’t pay rent, but he usually made up for it by keeping the apartment clean when Lacey and them couldn’t. “I think he wrote something about wanting to try manifesting fully again while we were there, but we haven’t been in the apartment at the same time long enough.”
“Scott?” Chrissa asked. River groaned and nodded.
“I swear, it’d be easier if they just moved in together so I could start looking for other roommates, but they’re “still taking it slow”.” River remarked.
“Heads up, someone headed your way,” Chrissa said, her tone of voice taking on a dash of an edge. River furrowed their brow until they turned and saw a purple skinned woman stride toward them with a glint in their eyes that River had a sneaking suspicion they should fear.
“Do you?” River asked with a slight head tilt of confusion
“Yeah, if it were anyone else, I’d say run.”
“But it’s me so…”
“Oh I’m so looking forward to what comes next.” Chirssa said with a laugh as they moved down the bar a bit. The woman who finished coming over made a show of coming next to River without getting into their personal space. River watched them out of the corner of their eye, waiting to see what the play was.
“What’re you drinking sweetie?” The woman asked. She had wavy purple and pink hair with white ox horns that curved just below her chin.
“Just soda, I’m a DD tonight,” River lied. Not about the soda, but about being the DD. Really, they were waiting for the text that said they were out of an apartment tonight, but DD seemed like the safer excuse.
“Ah, the responsible friend, those are always nice to have, I’ve never had the luck,” the woman said with a smile. Her voice sounded like honey and it was pleasant to listen to. But between Chrissa’s warnings and this woman seeming to lay on thick whatever it was they were trying, River let a chuckle escape them. “What?” she asked with a slight tilt of her head.
“You’ve struck out Misae,” Chrissa said, coming back over with a martini glass with pink liquid in it. “You managed to pick the one ace human in the whole establishment.”
“I doubt that,” River remarked, the venn diagram of “ace being” and “human” in this establishment was a thin middle ground, but not one person thin. At least, as far as River knew. Misae however chuckled and smiled.
“Then I’m terribly sorry about all of that,”
“Ah don’t worry about it, you’re still pretty and I like getting hit on by pretty women even if they are trying to mildly charm me.” River said with a grin. “I’m River,” they said, offering their hand.
“Misae as Chirssa mentioned, charmed to meet you River,” She said, shaking hands with a gentle grace. When they released each other's hands, Misae furrowed her brow. “Nothing?” She asked which got another laugh out of River. “Not a thing,” they said.
“Wow…” Misae said with a sigh as she took a sip of her drink. River thought she’d leave and go find another target before a grin came onto her lips. “Would you mind coming and pranking my friends? I’ve got one who needs to be taken down a peg and I think you’ll be my secret weapon.” She asked. River looked over at Chrissa who gave a short nod.
“If it’s who I think it is, they’ll knock him down several pegs.” She said, River turned back to Misae who was still grinning, more conspiratorial than sensual, they snuck a quick glance to where Lacey and Scott were still curled up together before facing Misae again.
“Yeah why not,” they said as they popped off their barstool. Misae giggled and offered her hand, a hand that River took, as she dragged them to a booth tucked into the back of the bar, it was an eight person booth currently filled with three similar looking individuals, in so much as they weren’t human and definitely had demonic lineage. River did their best to not make assumptions, but judging on what Misae had brought them over to achieve, the members of the table were all various forms of incubi. Concubi? Was that the technical term? One on the edge of the seating arrangement was a light blue man with his horns curving up from his forehead and a darker blue coloring on his cheek that River had a hard time telling if it was a blush or makeup.
“Mis, who’s this?” He asked, his voice slightly higher than expected and a curious look on his face.
“This is River, River this is Azzy,” the light blue one who smiled slightly and River was pretty convinced that this was the closest they were going to experience an embarrassed incubus. “Kori,” a maroon inc who seemed to be the eldest of the group as he simply smiled at their appearance. He had long hair tied up in a bun and River felt a little bit more at ease seeing him. “And Joliet,” another maroon skinned being who was grinning, he also had tied up black hair, though he wore jewelry on his horns. “Where’s Rose?” Misae asked as she gestured for River to sit next to Joliet. She sat down next to Azzy across the table and River tried not to feel like they’d been suddenly thrown off the deep end.
“Bathroom.” Azzy said.
“Biblically speaking,” Joliet quickly added. River chuckled a little at the need for clarification. Something told them that for him it was actually necessary. They also suspected he was probably their target.
“Ah, well, that’s chill.”
“Mis what are you planning?” Kori asked with a slight glare directed at his friend. Ah, he was the dad friend.
“Oh nothing, just a lil bit of karmic justice,” Misae said with a grin that was anything but innocent. Joliet leaned over to River and whispered in their ear.
“Blink twice and I’ll get you out of here,” he said with a smirk. River stared at him with a smirk of their own and Joliet broke into a laugh. “Oh they’re good,”
“Seriously Mis, what’s going on?” Kori asked.
“It’s payback for Rose stealing my mark last week.” Misae said.
“And how is this gonna be payback?” Kori asked. “You just put a perfectly beautiful human in front of him, if anything all this is going to do is insure none of us sleep tonight,” he said.
“Oh you’ll see,” Misae said, throwing a wink River’s way. River tried to not blush at being called beautiful and simply kept their game face on.
“What’ll Kor see?” A navy blue inc asked. He wore a grey t-shirt and dark black jeans and River saw the issue. Between golden eyes and a charisma that dripped off of him, even as unaffected as River was, he knew who and what he was and was well aware that manipulating people was second nature. He’d been looking over at Kori before scanning the table and landing on River. “Oh… oh hello,” he said. His voice was warmer than Misae’s was, more a whiskey than a true honey, but it didn’t hit River the way they imagined he intended. “If you’d scootch in sugar,” he said. To play along, River did so, pressing a little closer to Joliet in the process. River snuck a glance at the others who all looked a little nervous, even Misae, but River softly shook their head, hiding it by pushing their bangs off their forehead a bit. “Now, hello. I’m Rosair, you can call me Rose,” he said as he offered his hand to shake. River took it with a smirk of their own.
“Nice to meet you Rose, River,” they said. Rosair took their hand and kissed the back of it and River chuckled. “You do this to all the pretty people who cross your path?” They asked.
“Yes,”
“Then I can see why Misae and Chrissa put me up to this,” they said with a chuckle. Rosair furrowed his brow to which River only grinned. “I’m ace Rose, you’re just pretty.” Rosair looked over at Misae who was grinning.
“Payback’s a bitch Rosie,” she said.
“Ah no matter, you’re still here.” he said with a small smirk that seemed to indicate he wasn’t done yet.
“Sure,” River said as they tapped his shoulder. “So, other than trying to pick up people at bars, what do you lot do?” They asked with a tilt of their head. Even Misae looked a little surprised at the question. “What? You think I’m just gonna go back to the bar and go back to sitting alone? C’mon now, you guys are not that dumb.” Joliet broke out of the stunned silence first with a laugh.
“You’ll have to forgive them, they’re very used to transactional interactions and have not quite figured out just normal interactions, I work at a tattoo parlor.” He said with a smile.
“Interesting, Kori?” River asked, glancing a little around Joliet.
“Oh uh, I work at a bakery. Mostly donuts and cake.” He said.
“I’ll definitely have to try it some time, assuming you’re any good,”
“I’m mostly the counter, but Mandy, who actually owns the place, is quite good.” Kori clarified.
“Azzy?” River asked with a raised eyebrow, watching him fight off the dark blue crawling onto his cheeks.
“I work at a thrift shop.”
“I’m a grad student,” Misae said, “mostly focusing on art and culture, and Rosair’s a mooch.”
“I think the technical term is gold digger,” Joliet commented.
“I thought it was drifter,” Kori chimed in.
“None of you are correct, I’m a freelancer.” Rosair said with a roll of his eyes.
“That’s what we said: a freeloader.” Azzy said and River had to quickly get closer to Joliet as Rosair nearly vaulted over the table to get at his friend. River laughed a little and looked over at Rosair for the first time since he sat down.
“What’s your specialty?” They asked leaning on the table and cutting off the others physically a bit, which got a gasp from Joliet.
“Graphic design,” he said.
“You any good?”
“I’ve been told so, but you’re welcome to find out,” he said with a smirk returning. River laughed a little.
“Okay, yeah, I walked into that one,” they said as the giggles subsided.
The conversation continued on like that for a while, giggles and quips and jokes at everyone’s expense. River learned that Kori, Misae, and Azzy had known each other since high school, Joliet wasn’t technically an inc but his dad had been, so his cambion status gave him a weird in when they were in college with the other three, and Rosair had needed people to help pay the rent on his, in Azzy’s words, “fucking massive” apartment which had led to their loose confederation of people. Joliet called them “the Inc Den” which only got a groan out of Kori. They were pleasant and funny, and River tried not to think about how they were the first friends they’d made outside of work in three years.
When Misae had left the table to get drinks, River felt their phone vibrate and they tried not to groan as they fished it out of their pocket.
“Careful sugar,” Rosair said. He’d tucked himself in close next to River even after the rejection and they kept their phone in the pocket next to him.
“Shut up Rose,” they muttered as they clicked it on.
From Lacey Loo: hey…. I’m sorry. Tell drake i’ll pay for his breakfast.
River tried not to slam their head on the table in response. They tried not to think about how normal it was that Lacey didn’t even have to say much for River to get the whole picture. They changed their text channels and started texting Drake.
To Drake-ula: please tell me your couch is open
From Drake-ula: sorry dude, ditto situation
To Drake-ula: a) get some, roger’ll expect a review b) fuck you fine c) please tell me it isn’t roger
From Drake-ula: you think too lowly of me, it isn’t roger. And fuck you too, see you tomorrow.
River went to change chats again when Joliet piped up, “What’s with the angry eyes Riv?” He asked.
“My roommate just sexiled me and my go-to couch did the same.” They said as they pulled up Roger’s contact.
To Roger Snake: please tell me I can crash on a pile of pillows
The lack of instantaneous reply led to River looking at the time. The fact that it was a little after midnight meant Roger wouldn't even be up, the early sleeper he was. “Fuck!” They hissed.
“Aren’t you a little old to get sexiled?” Kori asked.
“Do you want to be in the same apartment as a werewolf having sex when he’s noisy even unshifted?” River asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Fair enough,” Kori said almost immediately. River sighed and tried to think of literally anyone else who might be okay with them crashing. Derek usually didn’t want anyone in his apartment except for holiday dinners, Chasen was out of town, and Al lived with six other people and they usually had people on the couch. They felt bad for Nox, who could technically leave the apartment, didn’t like doing it so they usually just suffered in silence and berated Lacey in the mirror the following morning.
“You could stay with us sugar,” Rosair said. River looked over at him with a look of confused amusement.
“Bet you say that to all the pretty people,”
“Actually we have a “no marks in the apartment” policy,” Azzy said. “It ensures we all sleep and don’t end up in this very situation,” he added.
“Why should I?”
“Because going back to your place means a very vocal werewolf,” Rosair said.
“And we have a pull out couch.” Kori cut in quickly.
“And they think you're cute and the fact that you haven’t run for the hills after nearly two hours with us is a sign they might want to keep you around,” Joliet whispered in River’s ear. Joliet had quickly become a grounding element at the table. He seemed to translate the unspoken wants of everyone with ease of exetend exposure. River tried not to flush a little at the comment.
“Can I convince you all to swear on no funny business?” They asked cautiously.
“Absolutely, just a couch,” Kori said. River looked over at Rosair who chuckled but nodded.
“On my name, there’ll be no funny business, just a couch.” River glanced at Azzy and Misae who nodded in agreement.
“We’re with them.” Misae said. River did a quick pro-con list in their head and sighed.
“Alright, yeah, I’d love it if I could crash on your couch,” they said.
“Then we should probably get out of here,” Kori remarked. Misae stood up and allowed him and Azzy out of the booth. Rosair did the same for River and Joliet. River quickly realized that other than Azzy and Misae, River was the shortest amongst the group, and even Azzy had his horns for a little bit of extra height. As they started walking for the door, River caught Chrissa’s eye who only slightly furrowed her brow and came a dash closer
“Rio,” she said. The group stopped and River went over to the bar, leaning over on their elbows.
“What’s up?” They asked.
“You’re fully conscious and aware you’re leaving with these people right?” Chrissa asked. River chuckled slightly and nodded.
“Yeah, Drake’s got someone over and Lacey kicked me out, they’re letting me crash on their couch,” River said. They appreciated the check, really, it was out of character for River to leave Labyrinth with anyone other than Lacey, Drake, or even Roger if they managed to catch him early enough.
“Alright, text me in the morning, yeah?” She said, which River nodded without comment. They went back over to the others and they continued their way out of the bar, River saluting Frankie at the door as a symbol that they were leaving willingly. Frankie let out a low growl but nodded as they let Kori lead the group to the apartment.
It wasn’t a far walk from the Labyrinth, probably why they favored it like Lacey and River did, and it was actually surprisingly closer to work than River’s own apartment. Which meant it was in the opposite direction of their apartment making changing before work tomorrow a challenge. Maybe they could? No, no that’d be pushing it. They’d just ask Derek to have a spare set in the back room when they got in. When the group reached the complex, River realized why Rosair had needed help with the rent, it was not an inexpensive building, even if Rosair was as good as he said he was. They all piled into the elevator with Azzy practically leaning on Misae out of exhaustion. Kori was scrolling through his phone while Joliet was fishing out the keys. They reached the sixth floor and wandered down the hall a little before opening the door.
The main space was fairly open, a decent size kitchen off to the right, a television on a stand by far wall in between two doors. There was a small set of stairs that seemed to lead into a small hallway. If River had to guess, they were going to go with the idea that that’s probably where the den’s bedrooms were.
“Bathroom’s the left door, I’ll help with the couch when you come out,” Joliet said. Having been relieved from bed duty, Azzy and Misae wandered their way upstairs. River nodded once and wandered into the bathroom that was quite well furnished for a half bath. They quickly went and splashed some water on their face and came back to Kori and Joliet waiting for them. Joliet had tugged the bed out and it looked really comfy, even by pull out bed standards, as Kori had seemed to stack pillows and extra blankets on the end. Kori then handed over a pair of sweatpants.
“Figured you didn’t want to sleep in jeans,” he said and River couldn’t tell because the apartment was dark, but they could’ve sworn Kori was a little flustered.
“Thanks Kor,” River said with a small smile. Kori nodded and untied his hair as he wandered over to the stairs, shaking it out and running his hand through it. River tried not to be mesmerized by the gesture but based on Joliet’s chuckle they were unsuccessful.
“I’m pretty convinced that’s why he keeps it tied up,” Joliet remarked.
“Probably, he could cause traffic accidents like that.”
“Wait until he reminds you he can be a whore,” Joliet said.
“Huh?” River said with a small flush of pink.
“Kori doesn’t like to advertise he’s an incubus, rather just let people think he’s a slightly tall tiefling. Hell, if he could survive without having to feed, he’d do it. But every once and a while either Misae or Rosair will convince him to dress up and it tends to lead people to have a hard time keeping their hands to themselves.” Joliet said. “But, enough chatter, I’m the door to the right, if you need anything just knock. Most of us don’t get up before noon, but I’m your best bet if you need something in the morning.
“Like a different t-shirt?” River asked.
“Oh yeah, I’ll even loot a pair of underwear if you need it.”
“I don’t think--”
“Don’t worry, Rose won’t notice.” Joliet said with a smirk. River tried not to laugh too loudly at the prospect.
“Thanks Jols,” they said. Joliet grinned and held their arm out, allowing River to come into his side if they wanted to. They did, with ease tucking themselves into his side and receiving a quick squeeze.
“No worries darling, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, yeah?” He said with a smile. River nodded and quickly disappeared back into the bathroom to change into the sweatpants that anyone with eyeballs could tell weren't theirs, but they didn't really mind. They were comfy and that was all that mattered. They tiptoed back out and carefully curled up in the pile of blankets. This.... this was good.
