Marcia was to Ace what the sun is to the earth. Everything just seemed to orbit around her. She still remembered in vivid detail the first day she ever met Marcia. Ace was no older than eight, maybe. Little Marica had just moved to town and, by the luck of whatever greater force there was in the universe, was plopped right into her second grade class. Even sat two seats ahead of Ace, which meant she saw the girl every time she lifted her head to look at the teacher. Or Giving Ace from The Outsiders Musical an actual character beyond just being "the girl greaser™" and making her the lesbian she should've been (ft. Two-Bit getting a little beat up by the Socs for fun)

Kissing Two-Bit might be the worst thing she's ever experienced. And Ace once accidentally walked in on Darry and Paul (He refused to make eye contact for a week after it happened. They talked and they’re cool now. But boy was that an awkward week. She was the only one who knew about the two of them as far as she was aware. Which was a strange secret to keep considering out of all the Greasers, Darry may be the one she was the least close to. He also confided in her when he called things off with Paul, probably because she was the only one he could tell.)

Two-Bit must have felt every inch as uncomfortable as she did because he dissolved into giggles and the two collapsed onto the summer ground, trying their best to muffle their hysterics so no one yelled at them for disturbing the movie. They rolled out just in time to watch Cherry throw her soda onto Dally and him stomp off angrily and glory, she needed that. It only further fueled their uncontrollable laughter and suddenly neither were caring that they made out.

They’d have to talk about it eventually… Ace just hoped it would be on her deathbed when they do so she can die in peace afterwards.

Then Cherry asked Ponyboy and Johnny to sit up front with them and if Ace was jealous of a fourteen year old boy, she was not gonna admit it. But what she was willing to admit was that kissing Two-Bit did not, in fact, kiss her queer feelings away, and so now she was left with the knowledge that she did have a crush on Marcia and she kissed Two-Bit, which was a nightmare in itself.

What a truly wonderful day… if “wonderful” were the fiery pits of hell.

The Way Back Machine

In 1966, my family--Dad, Mom, sisters Marcia, Jeannine and Carol--and I moved from Ft. Leavenworth, KS to Japan. Our father had just completed a year of instruction at the Army's Command and General Staff School. The Vietnam War was heating up and the US military was ramping up its support operations in Japan.

We spent our first two years (1966-1968) living on post at Sagami Army Depot (25 miles SW of Tokyo) where vehicles damaged in Vietnam were repaired. The post had seen service in WWII as Sagami Army Arsenal where Mitsubishi developed and manufactured tanks for use by the Japanese army. Dad was the depot's comptroller; Sagami employed a large Japanese workforce refurbishing tanks and armored personnel carriers. Those of us old enough to attend school were bused to Camp Zama which served--and still does--as HQ for U.S. Army Japan.

In 1968 our dad was transferred to Fuchu Air Force Base. We lived in the nearby Kanto Mura Housing Annex where I attended Chofu High School as a sophomore and junior. I recall fondly being 20 minutes by train from Shinjuku and its music bars that never checked our IDs. "One sloe gin fizz, kudasai."

In 1970, our father was shipped off to Vietnam for a one-year tour. We packed up and headed to Hobart, OK (population 4,600 at the time). Our mother was born and raised in Hobart and I'd been born there when Lieutenant Mjoseth, an artillery officer, was fighting in the Korean War.
