the biggest change I've made for efri & co.'s college questline is that they have to sneak around for all of it. in the game everyone will just send you off to do whatever but mirabelle is refusing point blank to let this ten year old (+11 year old + normal apprentices) go gallivanting off on a death mission because Obviously. so the difference is that efri has marginally more difficulty getting the necessary information to go anyway and then routinely shows up again going hi!! we did the thing!!! you can't be mad at me because we only ALMOST died and we were successful. and you can't kick me out because you're attached to me now :D (kazari stop trying to get me to tell them about the really extra stupid shit I did. I'm not dobbing on myself)

Sketch dump time! A whole bunch of requests from the crazy ex-bird app
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Order: Maisie, Pam, Colette, Buster, Chester, Chuster ❤️🧡 (and a teeny Gus), Leon and Sandy (Leondy 💚💜), Bull, El Primo, and Mandy!
Extra notes about each sketch:
Maisie:
Her breath attack is a condensed foam material, similar to that of a fire extinguisher. Using a gas similar to a pressurized CO² (based on gas-based fire extinguishers!), she shoots it out at high speeds. These hits can potentially cause frostbite and even severe damage to the body if left unattended. She's quite powerful in this AU due to this ability 👀👀 being able to put out the fires and overpower another dragon's breath? Now THAT'S some queen moves right there! She can also simply spray out the foam substance at short range without that pressurized gas. This helps with more close range fire fighting work.
Her right wing and front leg were undeveloped, a disability she'd had since she hatched. However! With the help of mechanics, she uses these prosthetics to help her fly. Still gotta test out how to draw it to make sense, as well as sort out how it stays in place. I've been using inspiration from Toothless (HTTYD) and his tail that Hiccup made.
Pam:
Pam is a bulkier dragon, very much on the larger side of all of them. I'm at odds with myself to figure out whether ot not she'll have wings 🤔 so I had two copies there! Perhaps her wings may be a bit smaller if I do give her them.
Pam spits out molten magma that's stored up inside her as an attack. However, it can also be chunks of scrap metal that she stores up. Otherwise, it's just magma.
Though I didn't draw this, I want Pam to be very resilient to fire in general, as her species/family of dragon use their ability to spew this magma (technically Lava after ut leaves her body? I'll do more research on this...) in order to craft and shape metal. While other dragons need to spend some time to build up a fire hot enough, the Junker family line is able to do this much more easily. (Amber is a close second, though)
Her skin has the ability to crack and seep up lava out of it, potentially coating her body in this to give herself a temporary lava shield, something extremely hard to break through. (In the future, little Jessie may also be able to do this... however, Pam doesn't think she's ready at the moment and avoids the topic or any ideas of teaching her how.)
Colette:
Colette flies in a sort of funny way, twirling around and flapping her wings to maintain somewhat of a chaotic flight pattern. Think of a snake slithering through the sky, but with large wings and the grace of... a teenage dragon (not much, but it does work).
When she gets better at flying...pray and hope she isn't able to catch up to her favourite brawlers cause she isn't ever gonna let go of them 💀 It makes for a great attack, actually! Charging at enemies and coiling around them like a snake to prevent movement, like a big hug ❤️ she just loves everyone SO much 😍
Buster:
Finally kinda set on a design for this funky guy! He's a larger dragon (smaller than El Primo or Frank, but still definitely up there in size)
His wings never quite grew fully, so he wouldn't be able to fly 😔 however, that'll never stop him and his dreams of being a cool movie star 🧡🧡
Buster, at the heart of it, is an unstoppable force when he sets his mind to something. He'll charge in with the same ferocity as his favouite protagonists, rivalling the audacity and hard-headed nature of even Bull! All while doing so for his friends 💪 we love Buster in this AU frfr
Chester:
Chester always has theatrics when he flies. Flips, spins, and fun aerodynamic movements up in the sky! He's gotta compensate for his lack of speed compared to other wyverns after all, but he thinks he's pretty great 😎
Loved drawing this kinda unique pose tbh! That's what I loved with these drawings, I got to experiment without really thinking too much for em with how polished and clean that look. It was very fun! 🔥
Chuster ft. Gus❤️🧡:
We love some goofy gays here 🥹❤️🧡 I just wanted to let em have a little nuzzle + smooch! Dragons don't necessarily kiss, but little side boops like this are the equivalent of a cheek kiss.
Also, a little Gus on the side 🥹🥹 I love this sort of found family dynamic that have! Buster being the cool dad vibe/big bro to Gus, and then Buster being in a relationship with Chester so that he's also a cool dad too 😎 Gus loved these two guys from the very start, they're funny 🤭 never a boring day for these silly lads.
Leondy 💚💜:
My beloveds 🤲 I really do cherish the ship, as well as strong friendship Sandy and Leon have. (Btw in my HCs, Leon and Sandy are 13 & 14 respectively, just to clear that up!)
Sandy, I've mentioned a few times, is very inspired by Capybaras, so Leon finding one is just perfect 🤭 silly little deadpan face lads.
Bull:
BULLDOZERRRR- What a lad! Bull is inspired by- uh, Bulls! Great creatures, large bodies and thick necks to support those headstrong charges 🐂 I love making his posture all confident, strong steps to say, "Yeah. You TRY and stand up to me. I DARE you." Don't wanna mess with him on most days 🏃‍♀️💨💨
El Primo:
Still figuring out a full-body for El Primo, bit he's roughly the same size as Bull! (Maybe a bit bigger)
El Primo has got really small wings, similar to his El Dragón skin. Even his scales and horns are inspired by that mostly! Love when characters have preexisting dragon themed skins 🤭 makes it a lot easier to make ideas!
His "mask" is actually just body paint. He has similar paint on his body, really showing off the vibrant colours and persona he puts on for the crowds.
He WILL beat up his enemies into a pulp in matches. Thank goodness there's the gem powered regeneration and the respawn system in place 😭 I plan to give him a very strong body and tail, enough to support him when he needs to go on his hind legs and overpower his opponents. Buster is designed in a similar way as well!
Mandy:
Last but not least, the Queen of Candy herself. Not even the Dragon AU let's her escape fast food work 😔😔
Her super attack is purely a magical sugar-based rainbow blast, as shown in the sketch. Also, I'm now realizing that I forgot her red spots oml- No wonder she looks so empty 💀 uhh sorry about that, lads 😭 I'll redraw her one day to show off that glowing effect of her spots 🥹🥹
And that's all! Thank you for reading if you made it this far! Hopefully I can make more of these sketch dumps 🤭✨️ maybe take reqs from here too! We shall see. Take care y'all!

Okay but Jake Sersin is such a jungle gym type of dad.
Like my friend, her kids run up to give her hugs and kisses and cuddle with her on the couch. Or they'll give some of their blanket to her. But with their dad, they just attack him out of nowhere and start to climb on him. Occasionally challenging him to the odd wrestling match just when he's relaxing and watching tv.
That's exactly how I see Jake and Venus with their kids. Like out of nowhere, Jake will walk in with a kid hanging off of his back, one clinging to his leg, and he's holding the littlest one on his arm, maybe getting chewed a bit. He's grown so accustomed to it, it's nothing anymore. He does occasionally overdramatize just to get them to laugh or to turn Venus on and have her want another kid, but he swears it's just to make the kids laugh.
Or during family movie nights, they older kids will send the younger one in first to ask Venus is she could move, because they want to sit next to Jake and the minute she moves, they're all ganging up on him, but they needed to make sure Venus was out of the way first.
Also definitely the dad where the kids will ask him if he could throw them in the pool instead of them jumping off the edge.
Also, Jake and Venus as parents???? Definitely the parents from Easy A
I love that we all agree they'e the parents from Easy A!
Venus is just hanging out on the beach with their youngest one, Evelyn, (who isn't crawling yet) and hears Jake laughing. She looks to see Emma on his back, Colette clinging to his leg, and their toddler, Thomas, in his arms, laughing up a storm.
"Mama look!" Colette yells out, "We got Daddy!"
Venus gets Evelyn's attention, who just giggles at the sight of their siblings using Jake as a jungle gym. Venus can see the heart eyes forming in Jake's green eyes at the sight of his youngest's gummy smile and adorable laugh.
"We make some pretty adorable kids," Jake sits next to V, joining in on her watching Emma and Colette show Thomas how to make a sandcastle. Evelyn reaches out to Jake, who quickly takes her and places her in his lap.
"We do," for a moment, Venus forgets to breathe because she's too busy admiring how Jake is holding Evelyn up so she's 'standing' on his thighs. Evelyn's little hands are pawing at Jake's chest, giggling as he moves her up and down.
"Soon, she's gonna be able to stand by herself," Jake states, a sly smile on his face.
"Yeah, and then she'll be crawling," Venus replies, wondering if this conversation is going where she thinks it's going.
"And before you know it, she's going to be off playing with them. And we'll just be here," Jake leans over, his mouth now near hear ear, "Alone."
"Jacob Thomas Seresin, are you implying we should have a fifth child?!" She all but rips off her sunglasses, looking at her husband with the same death glare that made him fall head over heels in love with her in that parking lot, all those years ago.
"No! I mean, we could," Jake adds quickly, seeing the death glare turning into something that scares him a little.
He takes a deep breath, "We could also start fostering. I talked to Bob since he and his wife have done it, and contrary to popular belief, there are babies in the system who need parents. And I know that's something you've always wanted to do, I remember you talking about that on our fourth date and -"
Jake's rambling is cut off by Venus placing a chaste kiss to his lips, followed by a quick peck on his sun-kissed cheek.
"I think that's a great idea, but why don't we wait until this one," Venus leans over to place a kiss on one of Evelyn's chubby cheeks, "Is close to being potty trained?"

* TW: This post contains mention of characters who died during pregnancy/childbirth and suicide.
The dawn of a new century brought with it the winds of change. Alfred and his new bride, Anna, forsook the silk trade to move to Henford-on-Bagley to pursue nectar making. The move did not bring the family luck and on her 20th birthday, Anna lost the battle to typhoid and passed. Alone, and on an abandoned farm with almost no funds, Alfred had to work hard to rebuild his home and his family. Eventually, he met the humble Celestina, who was able to give him two heirs before, in 1409, he too was taken from this life. Going into the 1410s, our two main households - the Brookers and the Cliffords- must fight to keep their legacy alive, as there are very few eligble heirs remaining to pass on the family name. Meanwhile, the new families of Shaw and Bigod are blessed with a number of children to carry on the family name. Come 1420, will we still be able to call this the Brooker legacy?

Here is a snippet of the latest thing that's been giving me brainrot; it's a Neloth/OC fake dating fic called A Solstheim RomCom (until I find a better name)
Tagging @thana-topsy @thequeenofthewinter @ladytanithia and @a50e10 for their interested in it <3
Thanking Captain Gjalund, she moves the crate to the side, stopping to read the letter before the journey back. The envelope is sealed with the crest of her brother-in-law's family, the Redwort Flower in matching red wax. Rochelle reads the letter:
Dearest Sister,
Congratulations on your nuptials! I had no idea
you married, how I do wish you invited the family!
Nevertheless, Father will be quite pleased to have
both his daughters being taken care of.
As I am so curious as to who could capture your heart,
I shall be coming to visit! I’ll be leaving shortly after
this letter is sent, see you soon!
Love,
Your darling sister
Oh no Rochelle thought, her mind scrambling no no no no. Her plan had backfired, her plan could not have backfired anymore. Rather than get Colette off her back, she has enticed her even more. I need to leave, I need to run, I need to fake my death! No, no, Colette is already on her way, it’s too late for that. Tucking the letter into her waist satchel, Rochelle begins to head back to Tel Mithryn at a speed of which Solstheim had never seen.
Floating up the Tower, Rochelle immediately runs towards Talvas, who is currently in his bedroll, having a rare nap.
“Talvas!” She whispers, as to not let Neloth hear. “Talvas! Wake up!”
“Rochelle? What’s going on? Is everything okay? Are we being attacked?” He goes to ready a spell when she speaks.
“Oh no, it’s far worse than that, far far worse.”
“Huh?” A groggy Talvas says “What are you on about?”
“My sister is coming to visit” Confused as to why this is a bad thing, Talvas asks:
“And that’s terrible because?”
“Because” Rochelle answers, adding emphasis on because “I wrote to her I’m married and now she wants to meet my husband”
“But you don’t have a husband?”
“Yes Talvas, that is precisely the problem. I need to find someone to pretend to be my husband long enough to convince my sister I’m taken care of. Someone wealthy and impressive.” Talvas starts to wake up a bit and with a cheeky smile, he brings forth a suggestion.
“What about me? I could pretend to be your husband.”
“You’re like a son to me Talvas”
“But I’m older than you”
“And yet you fail to be responsible, Master Neloth and I always need to remind you how to cast correctly.” Talvas huffs a bit, Rochelle may be kinder than Master Neloth; but he seems to be rubbing off on her, in more ways than expected. “Besides you are neither wealthy nor that impressive.”
“Alright, tell me how you really feel” He says, before his face forms a pondering look, signaling he is formulating an idea.
“So your letter said you married a wealthy man?”
“Correct” Rochelle answers, unsure as to why he is repeating information she knows back to her.
“And you’re looking for someone to impress your sister but also someone who supports your research?”
“Correct again” She pauses for a moment “Talvas, I’m not sure what you think you’re accomplishing here?” He laughs, although she is not sure she said anything funny.
“I’m just thinking out loud Rochelle” He looks to his left, to  which she follows, casting her gaze to where Master Neloth is reading. “But what about Master Neloth?”
“What about Master Neloth?”

Lone Louve AU
The idea came from @legendaryanchordelusion
In this au, Ladybug makes Zoé the new Bee Miraculous holder earlier than in canon because Audrey actually brings Zoé to Paris with her in Style Queen.
Of course Chloé's obviously upset by this and doesn't talk about it (no matter how hard Sabrina Adrien and Alix tried).
The episode Malediktator ends with André and Audrey getting divorced, which absolutely breaks Chloé's heart.
Chloé then takes all the money André put aside for her and went to New York.
She's able to get a job at a small diner and find a place to stay for at least a year and half.
While she's there she avoids Audrey, cuts her hair & add black highlights to it, and watch the Miraculous Team in America (who shows up alot sooner) in action.
When Monk's looking for a welder for the Wolf Miraculous, he's attacked by super villains that aren't far from the dinner Chloé works at.
Chloé sees this seemingly defenseless man getting attacked by actual super villains & nearly puts herself in danger getting them away from.
Eagle, Uncanny Valley, and Bliant Bear (The welder of the Bear Miraculous) out of danger and heal whatever injuries she got.
After that, Monk knew who he was gonna give the Wolf Miraculous to.
Monk goes to where Chloé staying, tells her that he's the Guardian of the Native American Miracle Box, and gives her the Feather Charm that is the Wolf Miraculous.
And after three months in New York... Chloé is now Rebella Louve!
- Her Kwami's name is LuLu.
- Her phrase to transform is "LuLu, Howl Loud" & her phrase to transform back is "LuLu, lay low".
- Her costume's mostly ash grey, but her gloves and boots are white. The black highlights in her hair are replaced with white ones and her ash grey tail has white highlights as well.
- Her costume also has two pockets on her sides where each of her Wolf Claw Brass Knuckles are. They aren't sharpened until she takes them out her pockets.
- The Wolf's power called "Pathmaker". A vision based ability that allows her to see the solution to the problem she's currently focused on. The weak spots on somone she's fighting, an item she's gonna get away from her tatget, it basically shows her what to take or hit to get her team on the path of victory for the fight that day.
Chloé spends the rest of her time in New York doing the following:
- Training alongside the other American Heroes.
- Helping them take out american super villains.
- Trying her hardest to not be in the public eye.
- Bonding with LuLu and learning about the past Wolf Miraculous holders.
- Helping Monk, Eagle, Uncanny Valley, and Bliant Bear find more members of their superhero team.
After being in New York for a year and a half, Chloé decides it's time to go back to Paris.
She tells Monk her plans to return to Paris and even tries to give the Wolf Miraculous back to him.
But to her shock, he insists that she keep it. As she and LuLu now have a strong bond.
Chloé then says her goodbyes to the older and newer members of the America's Miraculous Team at the airport before she goes on a plane and flies back to Paris.
However when Chloé returns to Paris, she learns it's gotten quite different since she lefted for New York.
Heroes and heroines that clearly have different types of miraculous jumping through the streets.
One heroine that caught her eye was a certain Rabbit Themed Heroine jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
Chloé then decides to go by the name "Colette Agard" and decides that Chloé Bourgeois shouldn't reveal herself to the public just yet.
She finds an abandoned warehouse that she and LuLu clean up real good.
Chloé even starts working at a new cafe in Paris called "Impresso Espresso Bistro" and wears honestly black and grey clothes to not draw too much attention to herself.
When the Miraculous Team in Paris see Rebella Louve for the first time, there are mixed results.
Ladybug's quite suspicious of Rebella Louve when she comes off as cold and distance when talking to her and trying to recruit the Wolf Heroine into the team.
Chat Noir actually thinks Rebella Louve's quite cool and a very skilled heroine. He often looks forward to working with her.
Those who agree with Ladybug: Rena Rouge, Carapace, Polymouse, Minotaurox, Coq Courage, and Viperion.
Those who agree with Chat Noir: Pigella, Purple Tigress, Vesperia, Traquemoiselle, Caprikid, Ryuuko, and Bunnix.
Rebella Louve will only help the heroes of Paris out if she absolutely has to. Other than that, they're on their own.
Bunnix and Rebella Louve end up developing a closeness that they keep secret from the others heroes.
Rebella Louve's surprisingly flirty with Alix.
Chloé (as Colette) is quite sweet to Bunnix. More than the other heroes.
Chloé (as Colette) often watches Alix study in the cafe while working (if she's not watching over her as Rebella Louve).
Rebella has a habit of watching over André, Zoé, Adrien, Sabrina, and Alix to make sure they're okay.
André hires a Detective by the name of Lucinda Zeal to find Chloé and bring her home. He doesn't tell her about the letter tho.
Hope you all enjoy this one!

I'll Always Be Yours (Part 5)
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Tumblr media
Fifth Song: Dahan (Gently)
You stop trying to fight your stubborn heart. Just wanting to live a lonely life without her.
A/N: Officially completed and I'm starting on my Wanda fic now!!
Might take weeks to finish that one though...
Oh well.
Dialogues that are in parenthesis are spoken in Japanese.
Warning: Angst
No more tears
I won't force it anymore
You are my love
Until eternity
No more listening
My mind is confused
I hope you know
You are the one I love
-
You hum as you draw. It took you a week until you can finally draw your sketches again. Another week to pick up a paintbrush and actually paint.
It’s been four months since then. Your only missing at least two more paintings so you could open another art exhibit. You hum as you take a sip of your coffee.
“Shouldn’t you stop?” You raise an eyebrow at Silvia.
“That’s your third cup already and it’s only 11 am.” You shrug at her and continue sketching.
“Will the last one be Natasha?” You stop and contemplate Miyuki’s words. You haven’t sketched her since you broke down.
“Most probably.” You’ll probably use one of your older sketches. The ones where the woman you draw was the one you knew. Not Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow and Avenger but just Natalia, the little girl who turned into a gorgeous woman. Natalia whom you loved with your every being.
“Maybe sell it this time?” You frown at Silvia. “You rejected the last offer for the portrait!” You shrug. “It was 20 million!” Miyuki whistles at you and you smile.
“I still don’t want anyone to monopolize her.” Silvia sighs in defeat and Miyuki consoles her.
-
You start painting her portrait again and you can’t help but smile. You just hope that wherever she is. Whomever she was with. That you’re still holding onto your promise with her. You’ll always be waiting for her. Loving her. You stretch your body as you pause for the day. You really did meant forever.
“Silvia?” Silvia opens your door and peeks inside.
“Yeah?”
“Can you contact Professor Asuna? See if there’s any willing gallery that I can rent for a week?”
“Okay. Got it.”
“Thanks, even though you’re only my bodyguard.”
“It’s called assisting. I do that too.”
“I know!” You chuckle as she closes the door. You open your phone and lay down on the floor. You begin watching videos of the love of your life.
-
“Natasha.” Nat ignores Clint and stares at her portrait. “Hey.”
“What?”
“There’s a kid that wants to interview you?” Natasha sighs and turns around.
“Why?”
“About the painting, I think.”
“Where?”
“In front of Mona Lisa.”
-
Natasha approaches the kid who smiles at her.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Colette. A big fan of Master Y/N.”
“Have you met her?” Natasha sits besides the kid and they both look at Mona Lisa.
“Yes. Many times. Through her exhibitions. Never got to buy any of original painting though, just the postcards one.”
“What do you want from me?”
“Just answers.”
“To what?”
“Do you and Master Y/N know each other?”
“Knew.” Natasha answers with a sigh. “Before I became an Avenger, I knew her.” Colette hums.
“To what extent?”
“What?”
“Your relationship? Friends? Lovers? Enemies?”
“Lovers.” Natasha says with a sad smile.
“Ah. I knew it.”
“What do you mean?” Colette shrugs and smiles.
“Do you know that she still loves you?” Natasha gulps and looks at Colette. Colette smiles and gives Natasha an envelope. “It’s all just postcards but you can compare them to your portrait here. The strokes and the color aren’t matching. She must’ve spent days on your portraits and only hours on the landscapes. Granted they’re the ones she sells all the time.”
“She never sells my portraits?” Colette chuckles.
“Never. She said to a buyer once that she doesn’t want anyone to monopolize you. That you’re better taken care of if you’re seen by the world.” Colette bids her goodbye and Natasha looks at the miniature version of your paintings, she goes back to her portrait and her heart stops. Colette was right.
You do still love her. She can’t stop her smile and Clint smiles at her.
“You okay?” Natasha smiles.
“I’m good.”
-
And if it’s not for me
The love that you offer
Then I won’t hope anymore
To be kissed again
-
You sigh as Silvia and Miyuki cuddle each other while you were behind them. You insisted on this arrangement so you could deny that you know them. You pay attention to the screen and flinches when Steve appears. He says that warning that every movie theater does before showing the movie itself. You sigh and you look and see that the two are looking at you. You chuck them a piece of your popcorn and they look at the screen.
-
“The movie was so good!” You yawn as Silvia gushes about the movie.
“Yeah!” Miyuki agrees as you stretch your body.
“Boss? You going back?”
“Yep. You two go on a date or something.”
“You sure?”
“Yep. I’ll go take a nap before painting.”
“How many more days till you finish it?” You grin at them.
“Probably just one more.”
-
You wake up and see Natasha’s portrait staring down at you. You yawn and smile. Your phone rings and you see that it’s Asuna.
(“Hey.”)
(“You ready for it?”)
(“Yup. I’m just going to have the final one in center.”) Asuna hums.
(“Another portrait of her?”) You look at it and smile.
(“Always.”) After you hang up, you send an email to Tony Stark, confirming his invitation to your new exhibition.
-
Slowly release
My heart can't resist
Because once you left
It’s been Extremely difficult
-
You put on your suit and hum at yourself. You clean up nice.
“Is that an appreciative hum for my fashion sense or are you just being narcissistic?” Silvia asks and you roll your eyes. You get out of your room and Asuna smiles at you.
(“Finally. After hours.”)
(“Only an hour. Don’t compare me to you.”) Asuna gasps and Miyuki snickers.
(“Hush, you. Now, come on.”) You smile as you all leave the Ryokan and into your gallery. You laugh as you look around and your new paintings are displayed.
(“Asuna! Thank you! This is amazing!”)
(“On such short notice too.”)
(“Anything for the master. As long as you save me one painting.”)
(“Pick one.”)
(“Wait, seriously?”)
(“Yeah? There are a lot more than the usual so pick one.”)
(“This one then.”) She presents the portrait and you raise an eyebrow.
(“Anything except that one.”) They laugh and you shake your head.
(“This one then.”)
(“Ah. Your hometown?”) Asuna hums and you nod at her.
(“It’s yours. I’ll tell Norah not to auction that one.”)
(“Thank you, Y/N.”) She hugs you and you smile.
(“Okay, then! Two more hours till we open the doors!”) Miyuki shouts and you smile.
-
“Are you sure about this?”
“Of course.”
“It’s your call.” Natasha hums as she approaches the gallery with Tony.
-
You smile as visitors gush about your paintings. Exhibitions are still the one thing that you do make an appearance at. You were about to be approached when you see her. Natasha… she’s alone and looking at her portrait. Your heart beats faster and everything seemed to close in on you. FUCK. She’s here. DAMN IT!
“Boss?” Silvia calls out but you don’t hear her. “Y/N?” She shakes you and you finally look at her. “What’s wrong?”
“Air.” You simply answer and Silvia nods. She escorts you out of the gallery and Miyuki follows after.
-
You clutch your chest as you try to breathe normally.
“In and out, Y/N.” Silvia guides you through your sudden attack.
“Did something trigger it?”
“Not something.” You answer with hoarse voice then drink the water that Silvia gave you. “Someone.”
“Natasha?” You nod in confirmation. “Damn it.” You stop Silvia from going back inside.
“Don’t kick her out. Don’t be rude.”
“Then-“
“I’ll leave. I’ll come back tomorrow.” They nod and you sigh. “Tell them that I got sick or something. Just go.”
“You’ll be okay by yourself?” You nod and bid them goodbye. You walk back to the Ryokan to clear your head.
-
Natasha looks at the stage where Asuna got a hold of the mic.
(“I’m sorry to announce that Master Y/N cannot be here tonight.”) She hears disappointed murmurs go through the crowd. (“It seems that she suddenly got sick and had to leave early. She did say though that she’ll try her best to be here tomorrow.”) Asuna gives back the mic to the Dj and goes among the crowd again.
Natasha tries to find her and sees that Tony actually got to her first.
“Excuse me, Miss-?”
“Ah. Yuuki. Asuna Yuuki.” Natasha shakes her hand and they nod.
“What exactly happened to Master Y/N?”
“I don’t exactly know. Her bodyguards just told me that she got sick and left early.”
“Is she okay? Did something bad happen? Where is she-?” Tony gets ahold of her arm.
“Okay. Sorry for the sudden barrage miss Yuuki. We’ll be going now.” Tony drags Natasha away from Asuna.
-
I will not allow it anymore
You hurt me
That again and forget
Our past
Can't you hear
My chest throbbed
It's getting away from you
My feelings
-
You take a deep breath and fix your suit.
(“You ready, Y/N?”)You nod at Asuna and she opens the doors to your gallery once again. People immediately flock to you. They’re asking how you’re feeling. Some about the paintings. Some about the portrait.
“PEOPLE!” Silvia’s booming voice freeze them and she drags you away from them. (“Stop mobbing the master! She’ll talk to you if she’s feeling any better! Understood?”) They nod simultaneously and Miyuki gives you a glass of water.
“You okay?” You nod and drink the glass in one go.
“You sure about that?” You nod again and give the empty glass back to Miyuki.
“I’m fine now.” You tell them and go to a visitor.
-
You’ve managed to avoid both Tony and Natasha as you talk to everyone else and it’s the last day of your exhibition.
“Miss Y/LN.” You hum as Tony approaches you. “You’ve been avoiding me.”
“You’re with miss Romanoff.”
“Ah… do you not like her?” You scoff.
“It’s nothing.”
“She didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what?” You sigh and wave your hand.
“As I promised, a million dollars.” He gives you a check and you shake your head.
“No. The exhibition is free for all. Keep it.”
“You sure?” You nod. “Then I’ll just have to bid all of your paintings.” You chuckle.
“And where will you put them?”
“Avengers’ Compound and Stark Industries.” You hum. He bids his goodbye and you smile.
-
You laugh as Tony bid 5 million on the last painting that Norah auctioned… he just spent 125 million dollars on all of your paintings.
“How about the portrait? A special gift for someone who just got you 125 million?” You go to the stage and Norah gives you the mic.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Stark. But that portrait will be donated, not bought.”
“Come on, Y/LN!” Silvia growls and you put up your hand to stop her. “125 million! Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”
“It means everything Mr. Stark. But that woman in those portraits also meant everything to me.” You get off the stage and get something from Miyuki.
“Instead of that, please accept this.” You give him the canvas that is covered.
“And this is?”
“A painting for her. I know she’s with you.”
“She had to leave early tonight because of an emergency mission.” You smile.
“And you can just half all of your bids, I don’t mind.”
“No. You earned those 125 million. Pepper will be happy with these pieces.” You hum.
“Mr. Stark.”
“Yeah?”
“Please tell her not to come looking for me again.” You bid him goodbye and leave.
-
Tony tried to find you again but he huffs in frustration. You were too good at hiding your own trail. He hoped to find you before Natasha gets back from her mission but as he hears the Quinjet land softly, he knew that he failed. He runs a hand through his hair and look at your paintings.
You really were a master.

The Family Business AU: Part 2
Part 1
Alright I honestly don't remember much of the game plot anymore and the memories feature didn't help much SO I apologize for this probably being horribly inaccurate to the game's canon. Eh, canon sucks anyway, this is an AU, whatever! Colette Belrose belongs to @gcldensnitch and Alex Vega belongs to @weirdcursedvaultkid
I do want to mention a couple things before the part starts. First, the way I headcanon Legilimency works is that it's a bit temperamental even for the most powerful Legilimens. Connect enough with a certain person, and disconnecting becomes harder and harder, and eventually you'll be linked forever with nothing to stop the transfer of thoughts and emotions. Second is about the twins. Tessa's got it really hard in this AU. Most of her development in 'canon' comes from her giving up the vaults and becoming more independent from Gracie, but that obviously didn't happen here because her family would never let her, so she has even more self worth issues than she should. About Gracie: from a young age she's been selected to be the heir, right? Her family and the other R members have always put her on a pedestal, and it's gone to her head a bit. She's a little too arrogant, and even too naive in a few ways. And she really doesn't know just how upset Tessa is, or how unworthy she feels, because unbeknownst to Gracie, Tessa's Occlumency is far stronger than hers. But both of them will get their proper development, I promise! They'll figure out just how fucked up their lives are soon enough.
Onto the story!
Are you questioning your grandmother's intelligence? Clarissa's stern voice rang through the twins' heads.
R's planned attack had not, in fact, gone as planned. Instead of throwing a few curses and leaving, as the agents were supposed to, they stayed and decided to duel with the twins and their friends, resulting in Ben getting a nasty curse to his leg that almost caused it to fall off. After a couple risky maneuvers to get the agents to finally leave, he was hurried to the Hospital Wing, where most of the friend group was at the moment. Thankfully they were paying Ben too much attention to notice that Gracie had crept away to the window to scream mentally at her mother - the only other member of R who possessed Legilimency. Tessa hoped that following her would make it look like they were just talking silently to each other. Clarissa hadn't taken too kindly to being shouted at in the middle of her lunch, unsurprisingly.
I'm questioning whether we're being given the correct information in the first place, or if Grandmother decided we don't need to be alerted when there's a change of plans, Gracie snapped. If I hadn't risked being outed by jumping in front of everyone else, he would have lost his leg!
And why do you care? I've heard your complaints about this young man. You don't even like him.
He's our friend!
Gracie, just stop, Tessa pleaded, grabbing Gracie's arm. She glanced over to Ben's bed; Ismelda (why was she even there?) was staring back at the two of them.
Sensing her sister's distress, Gracie followed Tessa's eyes to Ismelda, who kept her gaze. Tessa felt a wave of suspicion from Gracie. Either Gracie was so angry she wasn't keeping herself together well - which was very possible - or the twins' link had deepened without them realizing. Either option posed an issue.
I give you the information I've been given, Clarissa spoke, drawing their attention away from Ismelda. If you're truly this upset, I could have your grandmother stage a kidnapping so you may speak to her yourself.
No, no, Tessa interjected, not letting Gracie agree while still so uncontrolled. We can manage.
Good. I will be in contact on Tuesday to update you.
The intense headache Tessa had been feeling dispersed. Clarissa had closed their link. Tessa sighed, leaning back against the wall and finally dropping Gracie's arm. Legilimency over such long distances really took a toll on someone.
Gracie seemed fine though. Tessa knew she was just weaker.
You'd think the heir to the metaphorical throne would be shown a bit more respect, Gracie hissed. They really aren't doing themselves any favors here; I thought they wanted to bring in our generation? How in Salazar's name do they expect to gain more members if they keep fucking attacking them?!
Stop, please, Tessa begged, pressing her hand into her eyes. The anger Gracie was feeling was unnerving at this point, almost as if it was impossible for her to calm down, and Tessa could feel all of it like a fire burning in her heart. She didn't like being angry herself, so feeling someone else's anger was so much worse. Our link deepened.
Gracie's hand found hers and intertwined their fingers. It helped, just a little.
I noticed. Ismelda's still staring at us.
Tessa's eyes shot open. Ismelda had a blank look on her face. Too blank. Forced blank. What was she thinking? The idea to get into her mind was tempting, but Tessa had never liked using her Legilimency without permission. It just felt too violating; she would hate it if someone did it to her.
Gracie didn't have the same issue - within a second she was in Ismelda's head. This was important enough to warrant the intrusion, Gracie reasoned. No one could know until they had been recruited. The twins couldn't afford for anyone to be suspicious of them before they were able to get their most important people safe; Ismelda could ruin everything.
Thankfully, Ismelda hadn't drawn any connections to R yet - probably because she hadn't been very involved in the vaults and barely knew what R was, Gracie reminded herself. But Ismelda was very observant, and noticed almost every instance where the twins had mental conversations with each other or their mother.
The twins' Legilimency wasn't a secret. It may have been supposed to be, but in moments of blind panic an untrained Legilimens' mind will latch itself onto the nearest person to beg for help, and no one had been fully prepared for the Ice Vault, so Bill, Ben, and Rowan had very quickly realized the twins were not screaming out loud. The information spread quickly.
All things considered, it was fair for Ismelda to wonder why the twins sometimes chose to speak silently instead of out loud, and why they always seemed so upset while they were doing it. It was also fair for Ismelda to think that maybe the twins knew more than they were letting on. After all: it was true, they did. But she hadn't told anyone of her suspicions yet, which was the most important part, and she wasn't going to until she had proof.
Gracie extracted herself from Ismelda's head as smoothly as she could - the exit was always more noticeable than the entrance - but it didn't seem like the girl had felt anything. Gracie squeezed Tessa's hand.
"We're safe," she murmured aloud. No need to keep speaking silently, though neither of them closed the link. It was a strange sort of comfort to the both of them to keep their sister so close, even if their link was getting too deep to be completely safe.
"I don't like it when you do that," Tessa scolded gently. "What if someone invaded your mind without you knowing?"
"No one could," Gracie deflected. "Not even Mother can get in without permission."
Tessa shook her head in disapproval.
"It was important, Tessa. What if she started rumors we couldn't shut down? You know how Hogwarts is."
"I know."
"Come on." Gracie tugged Tessa's hand. "Lets go check on Ben."
The large crowd had mostly left, leaving just Alex, Merula, and Ismelda. Gracie idly wondered what Ben felt like being surrounded by Slytherin girls all the time.
"If they hadn't left I could have gotten some information out of them," Ben was saying. "We almost had them."
Merula scoffed. "If they hadn't left when they did you'd have to hop everywhere."
"A small price to pay if it meant we were closer to stopping them once and for all."
"I agree with Merula," Alex said. "Your health is more important, Ben. You'll have more opportunities."
"I wasn't concerned with his health!"
----------------
It seemed extra dark that night, sitting in the Slytherin Common Room with Colette as the fire died down. It was just Tessa awake; Colette had fallen asleep on her shoulder a while ago. Something about huddling under a blanket with a friend helped Tessa think more clearly, even without talking. The weight of Colette's head on her shoulder helped to ground her and remind her she wasn't alone.
Of course, even being comforted left Tessa feeling guilty these days. This was Colette. Colette, who had always been there, who always brought sunshine to the dark days. Colette, who had no idea that the girl she was sleeping on was technically her brother's superior in a wizard cult. Tessa had done nothing but betray Colette since the day they met. There were too many lies that would tear them apart, and Tessa selfishly remained anyway, taking the comfort Colette offered while tearing the girl down behind the scenes. How could she do this? What kind of monster took advantage of someone's kindness like this?
Times like this were when Tessa cursed R with her entire soul. She cursed her mother for bringing children into R, she cursed her grandmother for starting R in the first place, she cursed Vance for not giving his sisters the option to flee with him and for never contacting them, and most of all, she cursed herself for taking that stupid magical vow that meant she could never tell Colette any of this, because Colette was too good. She'd never join R, and when she inevitably found out, Tessa would never be able to explain herself. When that happened, Tessa would lose Colette forever.
The link Tessa shared with her twin flared just a little, grief seeping in and mixing with what she was already feeling. It was too muted for Gracie to be awake. Bad dream? Tessa let her mind expand into Gracie's to try and calm her - one of them needed to be well rested, at least, and Gracie was the stronger of them in every way. Whatever dream she was having lost its grip on her as Tessa yanked on it, leaving no trace and no more grief spilling over. Good.
This was Tessa's only way of protecting her sister. Gracie was always the one who led in battles, who talked their way out of things, who people respected. Tessa was a follower, nothing more. It hurt, but at least Tessa knew that she could keep people safe like this. Her first practices with using her Legilimency undetected were on her friends as they slept, trying to influence their dreams, and nightmares were always easy to dispel. Fears never mean as much when you can't remember them. To Gracie's knowledge, she hadn't had a bad dream since she was thirteen, except on the nights they shared nightmares.
The only downside was that dispelling a nightmare sent the sadness, fear, and/or pain barreling into Tessa in full force.
As Tessa let the tears she didn't understand fall down her face, the fire flickered more, casting just a bit more light into the room, illuminating Liz as she appeared from the hallway to the dorms.
"There you guys are," she whispered. "I woke up to go to the bathroom and you weren't there."
"Sorry," Tessa responded. She felt Colette stir.
Liz frowned, coming closer. "Are you crying?"
"Yeah, uh, it's nothing." Just the fact that Tessa was a horrible human being.
"What time is it?" Colette asked, lifting her head but not moving away.
"Maybe three?" Liz guessed. "I didn't look. What's wrong, Tessa?"
Tessa shook her head and wiped at her cheeks. "Nothing." She didn't know what her sister had been dreaming about.
Liz and Colette shared a look, then Liz sat down on Tessa's other side and leaned into her.
"You don't have to tell us, but we're here for you."
That makes it worse, Tessa wanted to say, but how could she? How could she explain that she didn't deserve any compassion?
"We love you," Colette said quietly. "You're getting worse, Tessa, and we just want to help in any way we can. But you have to let us."
I'm in a cult! I'm a liar! I'm a monster and you need to get away from me before my family kills you!
Nothing came out but sobs that were fully hers, so her friends held her tightly through the night, whispering reassurances that made Tessa want to throw up.
----------------
"You can admit you have a heart, Merula, it's okay."
"Vega!"
Gracie rolled her eyes. "It's okay, love, we know you don't care about anyone."
"I didn't say that either!"
Alex grinned. "So you do have a heart?"
Merula angrily scooped more fruit onto her plate. "Get me the dip," she demanded, and Gracie passed it over. The seasonal October dip had always been Merula's favorite.
"Why are you so interested in me anyway?" Merula asked Alex. "Shouldn't you be fussing over Copper still?"
"I already visited him earlier."
"I swear you're in love with that loser."
"He's not a loser!"
"At least the two of you would be a good match."
"Merula!"
"Would you two just kiss already?" Gracie taunted, rolling her eyes. "We can't have one breakfast where someone isn't bickering with someone."
"Are you seriously insinuating I want to kiss Vega?" Merula asked in disgust. "You're the one dating me!"
"And I regret it more every day."
"Hey!"
"I could date Rowan. It would be much more peaceful."
Rowan winked across the table.
Merula huffed, but thankfully shut up. She knew Gracie was just joking. Besides, Rowan would never lower her standards enough to date Gracie of all people, and it was well theorized that Alex did in fact fancy Ben. Gracie didn't understand that in the slightest, but whatever made her happy.
Alex was pouting into her eggs. Why did she take Merula's insults so seriously? At this point it should be obvious she didn't mean it. Still, Gracie kicked her girlfriend under the table, jerking her head at Alex.
Merula scowled.
Gracie kicked her again.
"You're not a loser Vega," Merula said. "Copper is though, and I stand by that."
Alex smiled a little. "You can think that, but he's awesome."
"I could kick his ass easily," Merula boasted.
And: more bickering. At least this was a bit more friendly.
"Chiva."
Gracie and Tessa both turned around. Ismelda was standing behind them.
"Yeah?"
"Cursed Chiva."
Tessa turned back around, tension radiating off her. She was always nervous these days. Gracie wished she could help Tessa see that everything would be okay. The two of them could protect their friends if something went wrong, because they knew spells only family was ever capable of, and if it really came down to it, R members all knew that they would be executed if they harmed the twins. They could use their bodies as shields, like Gracie had done for Ben.
On a more morbid note, Lorraine was old. It couldn't be too much longer before she either died or had to step down, and then Gracie would be the leader and exempt from the oath keeping her quiet. Once their friends found out why the twins had been lying to them, they'd understand. Sure, they'd be upset, but they were good people and they'd forgive them. Gracie had a lot of reform she wanted to do anyway, and after that was taken care of, their friends might be more willing to join if they hadn't already by then. Even if not, Gracie would be the leader and she could mark them all as untouchable. So in a horrible way, Gracie was just waiting for her grandmother to die. It would solve a lot of problems.
Tessa just hadn't come to that same conclusion yet.
"What?" Gracie asked, remembering Ismelda had addressed her.
"You have first period free, right?"
"Yeah, why?"
"We're talking. Courtyard."
"Okay?"
Ismelda reached over Merula for a bagel before leaving the Great Hall.
"What's that about?" Rowan asked, looking at the doors Ismelda had walked through, fork halfway to her mouth.
Gracie shrugged. "No clue," she lied. Shit, had Ismelda noticed Gracie in her head after all?
Tessa nudged Gracie with her leg. Gracie nudged back. It would be fine. If it came down to it, she knew her way around a memory charm.
Don't be stupid, Tessa warned.
Relax.
I can skip out on Divination if you want.
It'll be fine, dumbass. Don't risk your grade over nothing.
"Want me to come with you?" Rowan offered. Gracie focused back on her best friend.
"Nah, I'm sure she's not gonna kill me."
Rowan didn't like that answer, if the glare she gave Gracie meant anything.
----------------
Ismelda stood with her arms crossed in front of the fountain as Gracie approached. It was rather chilly out; the thin school sweater wasn't cutting it. Before Gracie could greet her, Ismelda made her claim.
"You know something we all don't."
It was a split second decision, fueled by the tingle in the back of Gracie's head, that made her agree.
"Yeah."
Taken aback slightly, Ismelda paused, having clearly been ready to argue.
"Okay, so what are you hiding?"
"I can't tell you."
"Chiva - "
"I'm under a magical oath," Gracie admitted. "I can't tell anyone."
Ismelda frowned. Her arms fell to her sides as she took in that she was being told the truth.
"I take it your sister is, too?"
"Yeah," Gracie agreed. "It's a family thing."
That threw Ismelda off even further. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Do you want to know what we know?"
Ismelda narrowed her eyes. "That felt like a threat."
Little do you know.
This could be a bad idea. Ismelda could take the news very badly and get killed. But Gracie was almost certain she wouldn't, and someone like Ismelda could be a really good ally. She had already proven herself to be rather observant, and she was the type of person who wasn't deterred by violence. And the power aspect would certainly tempt her.
Ismelda hadn't been a priority, but it was a start. Besides, if that tingle Gracie felt was to be believed...
Gracie sat, gesturing for Ismelda to join her, which she did with some hesitation.
"If you find out you'll have to take the same oath."
"I figured as much."
"Believe me when I say this is dangerous. Knowing will keep you safe, but only if you go about it correctly. If you refuse the oath, bad things could happen. And that's before you find out."
Ismelda yanked the end of her scarf out of the fountain with a muttered curse, charming it dry before responding.
"Your family sounds more fucked up than you normally let on, Chiva."
There was no arguing with that. Gracie let Ismelda sit for a moment, turning the information over in her head.
"When?"
I thought so.
"Next weekend is a Hogsmeade weekend right?"
"Second weekend of every month, isn't it?"
"Hope you don't have any plans."
Ismelda stood, and Gracie copied.
"Is this a trap?"
"No."
"You'll tell me?"
"After you take the oath."
She stepped back a bit.
"Then tell me where to be."
Gracie grinned. Lorraine would be pleased.
"Meet me behind Madam Puttifoot's at one. My family - " the oath prevented her from saying grandmother " - will take it from there."
She turned to where the persistent tingle in her brain was coming from.
"You can come too, Rowan." Two in one.

"There is no way I'm ever going on that thing. You can't make me."
"Come on, you promised that if I scored better than you at darts you would ride the Riptide with me! Gonna go back on your word now, Sheena?"
"Stop smirking at me, Zelos! You clearly cheated! That game was rigged!"
"All carnival games are rigged. That's common knowledge."
"I don't care. You still cheated!"
"Cheated how? You were watching me the whole time!"
Colette giggled, watching her two friends have a go at each other as they inched closer to each other with each word they spoke. All three of them were leaning against the cold metal railing, though Colette was careful to keep a safe distance from Zelos and Sheena. When they were engrossed in arguing with each other, there was a safe zone, and a not-safe zone where one was liable to get smacked by a wildly gesturing arm or two.
Surrounding them were various stalls staffed by people who were enthusiastically calling out to potential customers, hoping to receive more coupons in the final hour before the carnival closed. There were pop-up game stalls featuring the classics like ring toss and soccer, food stands selling carnival staples like candy floss and popcorn, and even thrill rides like the aforementioned Riptide, a roller coaster that paled in comparison to USS' coasters but certainly had the most twists and turns of anything offered at the carnival. Adorning everything was bright neon lights and colourful decorations, and noise came from every angle, lending to a cheery atmosphere that could get a tad overwhelming at times.
Despite the late hour of 9 pm, there was still quite a crowd - mostly consisting of young adults like them, the majority of families having gone home for the night. She had bumped into quite a few classmates in the past three hours, who had come here with the same idea of having a fun night out with friends after the end of A-levels. A lot of pictures had been taken, until her cheeks hurt a bit from smiling so much, but it had been great fun.
She, Lloyd, Zelos and Sheena had managed to visit almost every booth, using up all of the coupons that they were sharing amongst each other. But even with their combined efforts, they had only managed to win one prize: the adorable Siberian Husky plush she was currently hugging. Though they'd certainly snacked on their share of popcorn, sharing one large carton between the four of them until their fingers were sticky with kernels.
"Colette, back me up!" Sheena begged, turning to face Colette. Despite the biting words that were leaving her mouth, her true emotions were betrayed by the smile playing at the corner of her lips. Sheena's hair was tied up into her trademark high ponytail, the ends of her hair swaying slightly in the weak wind.
"What, me?" Colette exclaimed, rather surprised she was being pulled into the conversation. Zelos and Sheena tended to retreat into their own world whenever they got into this state, forgetting anyone else existed.
"Uh, well..." Colette muttered, sheepishly smiling. "Sorry to disappoint, Sheena, but I have to give this one to Zelos."
"See? Even Colette agrees!" Zelos placed their elbow on the railing, leaning closer to Sheena, smirking.
Sheena didn't even spare Zelos a look, just shoved their face away with a hand, ignoring Zelos' sputters of protest. "How could you, Colette? How could you side with the idiot?" Sheena cried in mock betrayal.
"Well, I and Lloyd were both there, and we both saw Zelos win fair and square. And a deal's a deal," Colette replied, shrugging. Zelos did seem more insistent than usual, but she couldn't discern why.
"Just think of it as a date!" Zelos waved a nonchalant arm in the air, that smirk never fading as they took hold of Sheena's arm.
"Screaming in abject terror is not my idea of a date," Sheena hissed through gritted teeth, though she didn't free herself from Zelos' hold. "Besides, we're supposed to ride the Ferris wheel together once Lloyd comes back!"
"Eh, we won't make it before the carnival closes if we catch the Ferris wheel. Don't worry, I'll treat you to ice cream afterwards! And if that isn't enough to appease you, surely some Ajisen will." Zelos turned to Colette and winked, leaving Colette utterly confused. Was there an underlying meaning to all of this she was supposed to be catching?
"If you drag me on that damn thing, Zelos Wilder, I swear I will never forgive - GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME! STOP!" Sheena shrieked as Zelos began to drag her by brute force towards the snaking queue of the Riptide. Colette gaped, watching Sheena struggle wildly, digging her feet into the ground and hurling curses that got steadily fouler at Zelos, who didn't seem to be affected at all.
"I'm back with the drinks!" Lloyd's happy voice came from behind her as he walked up to her, holding two cups with steam venting from their tops, hair adorably ruffled from the day's hectic events, woefully unaware of everything that had occurred in the time he was gone. "Wait, what's... Happening...?" he asked, only now spotting the gradually diminishing silhouettes of Zelos and Sheena.
"I... Uh, Zelos and Sheena are going to ride the Riptide," Colette said, explaining the situation as succinctly as she could. How else could she word it, anyway? There was no explaining the antics of those two.
"Alright." Lloyd shrugged, accepted her explanation and passing one cup over to her. She pushed the plushy into the crook of her elbow, freeing up a hand to accept the cup and still managing to almost drop it. She closed her fingers around the plastic cup, soaking in the warmth it emanated.
"It's hot chocolate," Lloyd explained between gulps as he practically downed the whole cup in half a minute. "They're out of hot milo. Sorry."
"It's alright. Any hot drink would have done." Colette finally took a sip, feeling the sting from the heat and sticking out her tongue.
"Should we wait for them to come back or go queue for the Ferris wheel?"
Colette sighed. "We should just go. The queue for the Riptide is really long... They know to meet up back at the MRT at 10."
The original plan was to take a group photo at the peak of the revolution of the Ferris wheel, but that didn't look like it was going to happen now.
So it would just be her and Lloyd riding the Ferris wheel. An activity that could be seen as romantic. The pamphlet for the carnival had even advertised it as a ride of love. When they'd walked past it just now, she'd seen that the Ferris wheel was decked out with a ton of wire hearts that lit up in multiple colours.
It was just ten minutes. It would be over in the blink of an eye! Totally!
"Then, let's go," Lloyd said, grabbing her hand and giving her a minute heart attack, causing her bravado to crumble into dust.
Nope. There was no way this could end well.
The two of them joined the short queue for the Ferris wheel, having thrown their empty cups into a nearby dustbin. Only eight people were waiting for the next empty carriage to descend to ground level and open its doors. Five of them - three children and two adults - belonged to one family, while the rest were a group of three girls, enthusiastically talking to each other. It wouldn't take long for their turn.
A bout of shivers overcame her as the wind picked up, the warmth of the drink already a memory. She wrapped her free arm around herself, gaze dropping to the floor as she once again regretted forgetting to bring out her favourite dog-ear hoodie. It was always hanging on her clothes rack, and it would have been so easy to just reach out a hand and swipe it on her way out. But no, she just had to wake up late and stumble out of the house still half-asleep.
She'd forgotten how cold the nights could get. Especially for her, someone who couldn't even handle the lecture theatre air-conditioning. Forgoing a long-sleeved T-shirt for her kiwi bird-print tee was not helping matters.
"Here." Something warm and soft was draped around her shoulders, and she looked up to find herself draped in Lloyd's familiar jacket, his face hovering close to hers. "You should have told me you were cold," Lloyd muttered, his breath tickling her neck. "I would have given you my jacket earlier."
His jacket smelt like him, a safe, comforting blanket that reached to her thighs. It held his body heat, too, slowly seeping into her.
Colette flushed, turning her face away so she didn't have to look into those russet eyes. For there was concern there, as well as the ever-present kindness, but there was also more. There was no way to hide her blush, not when he was right here, but she still had to resist the urge to hide her face behind the plushy.
Why was she still trying so hard to hide, anyway? It's not like it was of any use. She was so obvious. As Zelos had told her, it had gone far past the point of being funny.
"Though I guess you're always cold," Lloyd said, tearing his gaze away from her and taking a hurried step back. Perhaps the words were meant to be teasing, but they fell flat with the out-of-place laughter attached to the end.
"I - I mean, it - it was my fault for not bringing a jacket in the first place," she stuttered, the words stumbling over each other in her mouth in her hurry to answer. Now Lloyd would know she was nervous too. She was doing really well, wasn't she? “But thank you.”
"The next carriage is here," the attendant called out, voice flat and expression terribly bored. He was staring at them with a barely veiled expression of disinterest, waving his arms to direct them into the next carriage, doors wide open.
"Come on." Lloyd grabbed her hand, the smile returning to his face. The Ferris wheel was lit up to the nines, throwing soft purple light onto everything around her and illuminating half of Lloyd's face. Beautiful. He was always so beautiful, but it was moments like these where it made her heart hurt, wanting so desperately to reach out and touch his face.
Heart pounding in her chest, she took her seat, Lloyd sitting directly on her left, their legs close enough to brush.
She placed the plushy in her lap, resting her chin on it and trying her best to slow her racing heart, knowing it would be of no use. Here, in this carriage that was slowly rising into the sky and gently rocking, it was just the two of them in this little space, cut off from the rest of the world.
It was hard to tell herself she was imagining the intense way Lloyd was staring at her, like she was the only thing worth looking at, even though the beautiful night scenery was right outside the glass. Nor was it possible to imagine the tension, sharp as a knife, that had arisen between them for the past half a year or so. Almost everything was the same: they were still incredibly close, but there was a hesitance there now - in the way Lloyd’s fingers sometimes curled away from hers, in the way she sometimes stopped before throwing an arm around his shoulder to embrace him.
Neither of them had spoken up about that tension, dancing around each other like fools. Even if he did return her feelings… Love wasn’t enough to bridge the impossible distance between them. She could never fully comprehend all that he felt, just as he could never fully comprehend the absence of what she felt. She could never give him what others could, not with her extreme revulsion towards anything sexual in nature. She’d be willing to try, for him, simply because her love for him knew no bounds, but… she couldn't say where her limits would be. Likely not very far from where she would start.
Even though Lloyd had been nothing but supportive of her, that didn’t mean he was willing to take a chance that could very well end in failure and heartbreak. She might not be enough for him when it came to a relationship. If that was the case, she could understand. Neither of them had done anything wrong. If they were incompatible from the start, then she could keep her silence. She’d be perfectly happy to remain as friends, even if these nebulous feelings would never leave her chest. She didn’t want to lose them.
"Um, do you, uh... like the plushy?" Lloyd asked, his voice cutting through her anxious thoughts. Awkwardness radiated off of him in spades as he shifted in the seat, turning his head away to stare down at the floor. At least she wasn't the only one that was nervous. He was repeating the exact question he’d asked her when he’d given her the plushy.
"I love it. It's soft, and it's cute. Thanks for giving it to me." The same answer she’d given him before.
Lloyd had been the one who won a carnival game - the ball toss, to be specific. He'd managed to down all the cans with a single ball and gotten the choice of any of the first-place prizes. Zelos had raised an eyebrow and asked him how he'd gotten past the unfair odds. Lloyd had sheepishly scratched the back of his head and said it was a lucky accident, one that he couldn’t repeat, which proved to be true in his later attempts.
Lloyd had taken one look at the prize pool, pointed out the Siberian Husky plush to the staff, and then stuffed it into her hands the moment he'd gotten it, proclaiming that it was a gift for her. Zelos had been outright snickering, while even Sheena had looked like she was holding back laughter, shoulders shaking.
Lloyd's hand found hers in the little space between them, his thumb rubbing the skin of her palm just below her fingers. It was a repetitive, soothing motion, helping to calm her down.
She hoped that, no matter what, they would always stay together. Whether as friends or more. Just the two of them.
"I'm glad you like it." Lloyd's voice was getting progressively quieter with each syllable his lips formed, slowly shifting right along the seat towards her.
“Can - can I…” Lloyd asked timidly, turning to face her and leaning closer. Her field of vision narrowed to just his face, barely lit by the scant light that reached them from the carnival grounds and the spokes of the Ferris wheel. Everything else was slowly turning into a blur. “Can I kiss you?”
The carriage had reached the top of its revolution. Through the window, she could see the sparkling lights of the high-rises in the distance. Silence suffused the air as no one spoke, the world itself seeming to hold its breath, neither she nor Lloyd moving a single part of their bodies as they stared at each other. His eyes were wide, filled with such incredible emotion, built up over years and spilling over at this very moment.
Her breath caught in her throat, a current of warmth making itself known in her heart at the fact that he’d actually bothered to ask. She’d expected Lloyd to - the kind, considerate soul that she’d come to know and love, but somewhere in the back of her mind was tucked the irrational fear that there would never be anyone who respected her boundaries, simply because she wasn't worth it.
She took a deep breath, preparing her answer. It wouldn’t be “normal”, that was for sure. It wasn’t a simple yes or no, but rather…
“Is it fine if it’s on the cheek?” were the quiet words that left her mouth, shattering the expectant silence as her grip tightened on the plushy. Maybe one day, she wouldn’t mind a kiss on the lips, but not today. She wasn’t up to it yet.
She doesn’t know what answer she expects. Probably a no. It’s perfectly understandable for Lloyd to just step away.
“Of course,” Lloyd replied instantly, the gentle smile on his face once again shattering all the preconceived notions she’d constructed in her head, absolutely terrified of rejection but huddling herself into a corner in the belief that that was all she could possibly receive. There had been no hesitation behind that statement, no hint of reproach or anger or irritation towards her.
“Yes.” The word slipped out without any thought, for she herself had yearned for so terribly long. The desire she had always held to love, and to be loved, despite everything - to experience it all with the boy that had always been part of her life and that she hoped could continue to be there for the rest of it.
She turned her head to the side, and it didn't take another moment longer before Lloyd pressed his lips against her cheek, one hand still holding hers while his other arm wrapped around her shoulder, the plushy trapped between them. He was nothing if not gentle, bringing up her earliest memories of being kissed on the cheek by her mother, before she had left her life forever. It was through that gentleness that the force of his love was truly impressed on her - for there was passion there, in the very act of holding himself back. Love, gentle like a warm flame, but not any lesser for it, for his love was just as impregnable as a brick wall, unyielding and unbreaking.
She could feel his warm breath against her cheek, his lips softer than she could have thought, his hair close enough to run her hands through as she’d always wanted. So she did, letting the strands fall through her fingers like melted chocolate.
Was he… smiling? It sure felt like it.
It wasn't a magical moment like people always said the first kiss would be like. After all, theirs was nowhere close to conventional, but it was an experience that belonged only to them. No sparks were flying in the air, nor did time stop. It was just the two of them, fitting together perfectly like puzzle pieces in the way they always had, and she couldn't ask for anything more.
Lloyd moved away, his arm dropping from her shoulder, hand joining the other to clasp her limp one. His eyes were shining with joy, the same joy that filled her heart and made it feel like it might take flight at any time. Everything had finally fallen into place.
Her whole face was now on fire as she turned away, leaning forward over her legs. Her hair fell by the side of her face like a veil, letting only tiny glimpses of Lloyd through.
“You’re sure?” she asked, knowing that she needed to clarify. Even if his actions had been the shining light that burned away most of her doubts, some still remained. Lloyd really, truly needed to understand what he was getting into. She would not let him mindlessly enter into a relationship with her without knowing about all the ups and downs, all the complications that would come with it. That would only end in them hurting each other, and then they might never be able to stand the sight of each other again. It was the dreaded future she never wanted to come to pass. “It’s not going to be easy."
“I know,” he replied, squeezing her hand, his russet eyes focussed on hers. “But all relationships have challenges, don't they? We'll figure it out together, just like always. And if it doesn’t work out, then we’ll stay as friends, forever. I just want you to know that I love you.”
There is nothing but burning conviction behind his words, and a determination that reached deep into her soul and lit a flame of hope.
There would be many more difficult conversations that needed to be had, candid discussions that would need to take place. But for now, she didn't say anything more, hoping the unspoken “I love you” from her side could be understood, clear as day. She still couldn’t make herself say it, the final lingering doubt that she suspected would never fully go away holding her back: that romantic love had to go hand in hand with sexual attraction, and that one could not exist without the other.
She simply closed her eyes, leaning against him and enjoying the gentle rocking of the carriage for the remainder of their time on the Ferris wheel.

25-years-old
"Remember this Ferris wheel?" Lloyd teased Colette, squeezing her hand as they stood in front of the Ferris wheel at the reopened carnival. It wasn't the exact same one they’d ridden at the age of 18, for that one had been deconstructed years ago. But it was a near-perfect replica, down to the purple lights that lit up the spokes, though the hearts were gone. Even the bored attendant who was barely paying attention to her duties was right!
"How could I forget?" Colette laughed, her trademark bright smile on her face. Even after knowing her for twenty years and dating her for seven of those years, the sight of her smile never failed to light a spark in his chest.
At least this time Colette was dressed appropriately for the colder night, in a pencil skirt and a long-sleeved collared blouse with a few frills. She looked a lot more put-together than him, who was just wearing plain old jeans. He had picked her straight up from work before driving them here, after all.
All that was missing was the staff pass that she’d removed from around her neck and left in the car. Her smart-casual image, however, was completely shattered by the pair of grey dog ears poking out of her hair, attached to the headband sitting behind her ears. They even felt furry to the touch, though it wasn’t real dog fur.
A pair of brown ears sat on his own head. Colette hadn’t managed to win a grand prize at the game stalls like he once had out of dumb luck, but she'd managed to do pretty well at the ring toss, scoring almost all of her tosses onto the red-rimmed bottles. That meant she could redeem a few mid-tier prizes, so she'd gotten two headbands with dog ears attached, one for her and one for him that he could wear if he wanted to. He'd put it on immediately. Now they matched! He needed to take a picture of them sometime - Sheena and Zelos would appreciate the cute image.
More like Sheena would strangle him over digital space if he didn't send cute photos.
The carnival had finally returned after four years of absence, and he and Colette had jointly decided to return almost immediately upon hearing the news. It was small and honestly not that impressive compared to other theme parks they’d been to, but it still held precious memories. And it would make for a fun date, which it certainly had so far!
They'd retraced their steps from years ago, though unfortunately, they were lacking Zelos and Sheena. First riding the pirate ship, Colette’s hair going wild in the air as the ship swung from side-to-side, then visiting the game stalls, laughing at each other’s absolutely horrendous attempts, then buying and sharing a stick of cotton candy between them, taking turns biting from the fluffy substance and having their tongues curl from the overload of sweetness, before finally arriving back here at the Ferris wheel.
"I know I've said this already, but thanks for planning this all out," Colette said, linking her arm with his and smiling up at him as they joined the queue. The queue was much longer today, amounting to more than 40 people, by his rough estimate. It was still quite early in the evening, half of the sun still peeking over the horizon, the sky painted in a pink that would soon be darkening to orange. It was just as noisy as in the past, perhaps even noisier, for the families hadn't gone home yet. "There were quite a few kerfuffles with the system at work today, and this really helped."
"That bad?"
"Mm. We had a new intern come in today, and then the old system just decided to crash. Not the intern's fault, she's the sweetest girl. But it was still a headache to deal with."
"Well, I'm glad it helped. Though I'm just happy to spend more time with you."
If everything went according to plan, then he'd be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
He shoved his hand into his pocket, checking that the all-important box was still there. It was the crux of this whole operation, and he could not lose it.
Colette laughed, a sound that inevitably made him smile. "I'm sorry I haven't been free for the past few weeks. It's a busy time for the company."
"It's alright. I'll be starting work soon too, after all. Besides, we still stay two floors apart. There's pretty much no way we don't see each other every week, silly."
"Sorry, sorry. Shouldn't be a downer; you're right. Anyway, since tomorrow’s a public holiday, want to spend it over at my place?”
“Netflix and chill?” Lloyd answered, well aware that he was probably getting some weird looks from people close enough to overhear him. He wasn’t even sure if Colette knew of its double meaning - she was generally completely clueless about the world of euphemisms. Over time, they’d just started co-opting the phrase. After all, their time together at each other’s place was mostly spent… watching shows while curled up together on the couch, creating dishes that were more like unrecognisable disasters in the kitchen while attempting not to set the whole place on fire, or Colette playing video games at the foot of the bed while he tickled her neck with his toes. In terms of risque activities, they so rarely happened - and only after he checked, double-checked and triple-checked that Colette was feeling up to it and not forcing herself for his sake.
“I don’t mind, but we haven’t finished that card game we started last month. The card piles are still sitting untouched on my bay window. Wanna do that instead?”
“Sure!” He replied enthusiastically. Board games or card games always promised a good time, if infuriating when nothing would line up and Lady Luck was decidedly not smiling on him. Colette seemed to get all the luck in these party games. Maybe it was consolation for tripping all the time.
“It’s such a shame that Zelos and Sheena aren’t here,” Colette said, pulling out her phone. “I know they went on the Ferris wheel the year after we did, but we still haven’t gotten that group photo we were supposed to.”
“One’s in Europe and one’s in Australia. There’s no way they could join us on such short notice.” The last he'd heard from them, both were doing well for themselves and very happy in their long-distance relationship.
“True. I guess I can add them to the photo afterwards with the power of Photoshop. Oh, and Zelos sent me this really weird message...” After a few swipes of her finger, Colette shoved the bright phone screen under his nose.
Zelos Wilder: Looking forward to the good news ;)
“Do you have any idea what they mean?” Colette asked, cocking her head to the side in confusion. “They haven’t been replying to my question!”
Lloyd could feel his fingers twitching. Zelos Wilder wasn’t here, but if they were, Lloyd would have strangled them already. Trying to spoil the surprise, were they?
“It’s probably nothing! You know how they are. Always trying to cause chaos.” Lloyd shrugged, hoping he wasn’t being too obvious, as he tended to be.
“I suppose that’s true… What good news?” Lloyd could hear Colette repeating that question to herself under her breath, not quite soft enough for it to escape his notice. She didn’t seem to have noticed that anything was up with him, thankfully.
“It’s our turn! Come on, let’s get on!” Lloyd declared, just loud enough to startle Colette and cause her to nearly drop her phone. She hurriedly stuffed it back into her pocket, following Lloyd to the open carriage. She hadn't realised the space before them had completely cleared.
The attendant lazily waved them onto the open carriage with barely a glance at them, a mumbled: “Have a nice ride” leaving her mouth.
Lloyd was the first to scramble on, turning around to give Colette a helping hand - only to find her falling straight into him, having tripped over the raised step. With a shocked “Oh!” falling from her lips, Colette crashed into him, nearly knocking him flat onto the carriage seat. With a shocked yelp, Lloyd braced himself against the glass window of the carriage, barely maintaining his balance. Years of practice at stopping Colette’s sometimes fantastical falls over obstacles that weren’t visible to him had honed his reaction times to near perfection, giving him ample preparation for this situation.
The attendant continued to ignore them, gaze fixed not so discreetly on the phone sitting in her lap. The doors of the carriage slid smoothly shut, and with a jolt that nearly knocked them off balance again, the carriage set off on its journey.
"Um, sorry..." Colette apologised from her position pressed flush against Lloyd's chest, arms entangled in his. She slowly extricated herself from the mess, stumbling a few times but managing not to fall again, even with the gentle swaying of the carriage floor. He tried his best to steady her without falling over himself. She sheepishly smiled. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” Lloyd adjusted her headband, setting the ears that had been knocked crooked back into their rightful place. He’d told her multiple times that she didn’t need to apologise for tripping, but she still did, the habit too ingrained to break. It was endearing, though. “You?”
“I’m fine!” Colette smoothed out her skirt (though there weren’t any noticeable wrinkles in it from the fall,) and sat down to rest her weary feet, giving Lloyd the cue to sit down as well. “Thank goodness I wasn’t wearing heels…”
Lloyd did not want to imagine what would have happened if she was - she might have twisted her ankle, or worse. She rarely wore heels due to her clumsiness, but when she did, all sorts of accidents tended to happen.
He stuffed his hand into his pocket again, fingers feeling the velvet texture again.
It’s still here.
"What's still here?" Colette’s confused voice broke through his relieved thoughts. Her hands were resting in her lap and she was leaning forward, eyes shining with a curious light. The usual white lights of the new condominiums close to the carnival grounds shone, a few glimmers of pink visible as people celebrated Pink Dot. It was at this very moment that the Ferris wheel's lights turned from purple to pink, the spokes emanating soft pink light that washed over Colette, making her hair glisten - almost like an ethereal fairy with imaginary wings that shimmered, having come to visit him on this mortal plane. The dog ears only added to that image, somehow. Even now, the sight of her was enough to make him feel dizzy, both out of love and awe, even if he no longer blushed like an embarrassed schoolboy. Awe that she could get more beautiful every time his gaze landed on her. And awe that such an incredible person had chosen to trust him and stay with him.
He was so enraptured by the angel before him that it took a few seconds for her words to process in his mind, after which he froze in horror.
OH NO, HE’D SAID IT OUT LOUD. A thousand alarm bells were ringing in his head. Some days he was reminded that he was an adult now, and other days he was reminded that he was as much an idiot as he used to be. Some things just never changed.
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” Colette said, a teasing lilt to her voice as she rested her chin on her palm, an amused smile playing on her lips.
He could just play it off - he knew Colette wouldn’t pursue it any further if he gave off the signals to drop the topic. She was just like that: the most considerate person he knew.
But…
The original plan had been to do it on the Ferris wheel. It even had Zelos' approval. This, right now, was the perfect chance to just let the cat out of the bag. And he would grasp the opportunity in hand before it could escape him.
For he could think of no future happier than one spent Colette’s side.
Taking a deep breath, he pulled the purple box out of his pocket with a shaking hand, dropping to his knees on the surprisingly clean carriage floor, devoid of the usual spilt drinks and crumpled up tissues.
He could tell the exact moment Colette gleaned the true intent behind his actions, the blank, confused expression on her face morphing into one of shocked disbelief, eyes widening and hands flying up to cover her mouth.
Damn it, he’d completely forgotten the script he’d written with Zelos’ assistance in a back-and-forth over messages, Zelos alternating between giving actually good advice and being extremely annoying, though Lloyd had gotten them to shut up by asking them when they planned to propose. The two of them had both struggled to find the right words, since neither of them had done super well in English. But Lloyd had persevered, wanting to get his feelings across eloquently.
But now that he was staring into Colette’s blue eyes, all the words were sprouting wings and flying mockingly out of his head, leaving only blank space for him to reach uselessly for.
The one piece of advice Zelos had given him that continued to stick in his head was this: speak from the heart, and surely she would understand.
He couldn’t keep her waiting forever.
“I… ” He couldn’t help but start off slow, struggling against the block in his mind but determined to push past it. The words then seemed to just come to him, progressively faster as time went on, stumbling out of some unknown part of his mind - or perhaps it would be more accurate to say his heart. Somehow, throughout it all, he didn't drop the box despite his trembling hands. “Colette, you’re the most amazing person I know. Your compassion, your gentleness, even your clumsiness, they’re all vital parts of my life that I wouldn’t give up for anything. You are my shining star in the sky, the one that gives me hope, that inspires me to be the best version of myself. If I had the choice to relieve my life from the start, I wouldn't change a thing, because meeting you on that playground all those years ago was the best thing that has ever happened to me. All my years spent with you have been incredible, and I would like to spend many more by your side. So, just like years ago, Colette, I have something I need to ask you, right here and right now.”
“Will you… Will you marry me?” He finished, voice drifting off into silence as he flipped open the box to reveal the two plain, thin metal rings he’d bought. Colette wasn’t the type to go for flashy diamonds or colourful gems. She’d appreciate something simple like this.
He waited, the few seconds of deafening silence seeming to stretch out into eternity, broken only by the sound of blood rushing past his ears. This wasn’t the first time he’d asked this very question, if in a different and less dramatic form. He’d already received her answer once. But he would respect whatever answer she gave now, and most of all, they would keep the promise they had made at this very place: that they would always remain friends, no matter what.
~~~
Colette still couldn’t quite believe her ears, gaze flitting between Lloyd’s face and the box he was holding up towards her, the two rings housed snugly within reflecting pink light.
Marriage had crossed her mind many times. She had learned over the years that it wasn’t a penultimate goal that had to be reached to prove her relationship successful, and she’d told Lloyd as much when he’d asked her two months ago if she’d be willing to get married.
But still, even if she had managed to break free from most of the notions the fairytales of old had implanted into her head, able to just enjoy them as sweet stories now, she couldn’t quite rid herself of the dream of having a fairytale wedding. One that was perfectly planned, with family and friends present to stand witness to their union.
She’d told him yes. That she would be willing to tie the knot with him, the one she loved. The expectation of a proposal had been simmering in the back of her mind ever since, often going forgotten. She had not expected the time would be now. Lloyd had been more fidgety than normal, constantly checking his pockets while disguising the action as keeping his hands in his pockets. She’d known something was up, but his true intentions had escaped her detection until just moments before, when she’d been taken off guard. All she’d thought when he’d pulled out the box was that it resembled the ring boxes in the dramas Sheena was always recommending to her, the ones that appeared in all the emotional proposal scenes, until the realisation had hit her in the chest like a truck.
Once again, like years ago, they’d reached the top of the revolution. The silence remained unbroken as Lloyd patiently awaited her answer, not pushing her towards one. And so events repeated, mirrored across time.
Colette slowly stretched out her arm, eyes shimmering with unshed tears as a smile graced her face. She nodded, her throat blocked by all the emotions that swirled in her chest, unable to say ‘yes’ out loud even as she screamed it over and over in her mind, the tears finally breaking free of whatever barrier was holding them back to spill down her face.
Lloyd broke out into the most beautiful smile she had ever seen, radiating pure joy as he slid one of the simple, elegant, silver bands onto her ring finger. It fit. Perfectly. When had he even learned her ring size?
She picked up the other ring that was meant for Lloyd, marvelling at how her hand could somehow remain stable as the rest of her body trembled in barely contained emotion. The ring was so tiny, held between her thumb and index finger, and yet it held such significant weight as she slid it onto his ring finger, the skin of his hand rough against hers and the metal cold.
Lloyd jumped to his feet, pulling her into an embrace and pressing a kiss to the top of her head (his nose bumping the dog ears), holding her close, his happy laughter rumbling through his chest. Even now, when he must have been bursting with joy, he was still mindful of her boundaries, refusing to do anything that would cross the line. Heart filled with warmth, she pressed herself impossibly closer, intending to just melt into his arms forever -
"Please get off the carriage."
The deadpan voice that belonged to neither her nor Lloyd broke through the peaceful bubble that had been constructed around the two of them. She froze, feeling Lloyd stiffen around her as well. Looking to the left yielded the view of solid ground, and the same uninterested attendant gesturing towards it.
Ah. They'd reached the bottom without even noticing. This was… embarrassing, to say the least.
Thankfully, no one seemed to be in the queue at the moment, allowing the two of them to escape from the Ferris wheel without much attention. It appeared that only the attendant had borne witness, and she couldn’t seem to care less, having returned to the booth.
Their interlocked hands swung in the air, the matching rings glinting under the bright neon lights of the carnival as she wiped away her happy tears, both of them grinning uncontrollably.
"I love you," Lloyd said, the words leaving his lips with ease, as they always had. "Shall we go home?” he asked.
Home was with friends and family and Lloyd, the one who held her heart.
Colette squeezed Lloyd’s hand. She felt light as a feather, like she could somehow fly with wings that she didn't have.
"I love you," she replied, the words coming so easily now. "Let’s.”
~~~
The attendant shook her head, scoffing as she returned to scrolling through Twitter.
“I suppose love does make the world go round.”

Fic: Building and Rebuilding
Summary: Rumpelstiltskin finds a young woman by the side of the road on his way home from the market. She has no memory of who she is or where she’s come from, but it’s obvious that she’s a noblewoman, and even as he takes her home to care for her, he knows she will not be able to stay. Or will she?

Building and Rebuilding
Ever since he had first found her in the forest, Rumpelstiltskin knew that this day would come. He had known that Belle would not be able to stay with them forever, even if she did not know it herself at the time.
It had been a perfectly normal day. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened. The reports from the front lines of the ogre wars were becoming ever bleaker. More and more towns and villages were falling in the path of the brutes, and everyone in the Frontlands was becoming increasingly nervous that the war would come to them much sooner than anticipated.
For his own part, Rumpelstiltskin was mainly concerned about the constantly lowering age of conscription. Bae was only eleven, still too young to be drafted and dragged away, but within the past six months the age had already lowered from twenty-one, down to nineteen, down to eighteen, and now down to seventeen. How long would it be before the soldiers were taking babes in arms to use as fodder for the ogres?
The straggling lines of refugees moving through the Frontlands on the main roads had been an ever-present sight ever since the wars had begun, but now not a day went by when caravans were not seen.
Rumpelstiltskin’s heart always went out to those he saw. These were people who had lost everything to the war, their only possessions the things that they could carry on their backs or in the few carts that they had managed to salvage from the ogres’ destruction. Although he had lost so much as a result of the war, at least he still had his home, and his income from spinning, and above all, he still had Bae. He dreaded to think how many of the refugees on the road had lost loved ones.
For the most part they kept their heads down, trudging towards a destination that they did not yet know what it was. They still had enough pride not to beg for provisions or shelter, perhaps knowing that the villages they were passing through had been hit hard by the crops being razed, but whenever Rumpelstiltskin had offered them what little he could when he passed them on the roads on his way to the market, he had been accepted gratefully.
It was on one of these market excursions that he had found her. The night had long since fallen and the roads were quiet, but far from empty. He wouldn’t even have noticed her if he hadn’t had to jump into the hedgerow to avoid being run down by a war waggon thundering along, taking supplies and fresh soldiers to the front lines as fast as it could go. He had tripped over her, literally, lying in the ditch at the side of the road.
Although she was battered and bruised and covered in mud and twigs, Rumpelstiltskin could see from the quality of her clothing that she was a high-born lady, and he wondered how she had come to be by the side of the road. There was a bloody gash on the side of her head where she had fallen, and she groaned as she came round.
“Can you move?” There wasn’t a lot of point in asking her if she was hurt; that was obvious. Rumpelstiltskin wondered what had happened to her; if she was one of the people who had been displaced due to the war, or if she was here by happenstance.
Either way, some great misfortune had befallen her. Perhaps she’d been set upon by the desperate bandits who sometimes frequented the woods, looking to make loot from her jewels and silks. She had no possessions with her, as far as Rumpelstiltskin could see, and she certainly wore no adornments.
The woman moved her arms and legs gingerly, then nodded.
“Yes. Thank you.”
He helped her to her feet, not an easy task considering his own imperfect balance, but once they were both upright, he led her back onto the road towards his village. It wouldn’t do for anyone who was unfamiliar to the area to be out alone at night, let alone a lady, but Rumpelstiltskin didn’t know the proper protocols for inviting her back to his home.
“What happened? Is there somewhere I can escort you?”
“I… I don’t know. I can’t remember…”
It was at that point that Rumpelstiltskin decided that it was probably best to leave the proper protocols for dealing with accosted ladies and get her back to his home as quickly as possible.
Her name was Belle, and she could vaguely recall her home being attacked by the ogres, but where that home was and who her people were, that had all fled from her memory when she had been injured. She remembered vague impressions of running, of someone calling her name - and then the next moment she was lying in a ditch with Rumpelstiltskin worrying over her.
Bae was instantly smitten with her, and immediately started thinking up all sorts of wonderful and overly romantic stories in which Rumpelstiltskin had saved her from a band of at least twenty-seven ruffians, and now, naturally, they were going to fall in love and live happily ever after.
Belle just laughed at the suggestion, even as a mortified Rumpelstiltskin shepherded his son off to bed.
“Is there nothing you remember of your identity?” he asked once Bae was safely asleep and in no more danger of interfering.
Belle shook her head, but then stopped, her brow furrowing as she brought a hand to her throat. Beneath the collar of her dress, there was a worn leather string, and she pulled it out to show an old gold signet ring.
“I suppose there’s this,” she said. “The picture looks familiar, but I don’t know what it means.”
Rumpelstiltskin looked at the image, a stag beneath a fruit tree. He was sure that he had seen it somewhere before, but coats of arms and official seals weren’t something that peasants like him had much call to recognise.
“Well, maybe more will come back to you once you heal.”
Belle nodded, touching the bandage around her head. “Thank you for everything that you’ve done for me. I don’t know how I can ever repay you for your kindness.”
Rumpelstiltskin just shrugged. “I’m just doing what every decent person would do.”
“Yes, well…” Belle’s face darkened. “Maybe there aren’t too many decent people around these days.”
Despite her bruises, her smile, when she turned it on him, was still the most beautiful thing that Rumpelstiltskin had ever seen, and although he would not change his actions for the world had he had the chance to go back and do it all over again, he began to think that maybe he had made a terrible mistake in bringing Belle home.
X
So yes, Rumpelstiltskin had known from the first moment that he had met Belle and she had come to stay with them that she would not be around forever. People would miss someone like Belle, and not in the sense that Rumpelstiltskin would miss her when she inevitably left to go back to her own people. Her absence would be noticed, and people would come looking for her.
That had indeed now happened. After almost four months of the modest domestic life that the three of them had settled into, flashes of Belle’s memory returning in dribs and drabs but never enough to full identify her, the news started to trickle in along the trading roads. The duke and duchess of the Marchlands were searching high and low for their lost daughter Isabelle, who had been separated from them as they fled their castle under ogre attack. Lady Colette had refused to give her up for dead, and now they were travelling throughout the kingdom, looking for her.
Several imposters had been offered up, all to no avail since the family had not been apart long enough for the duke and duchess to have completely forgotten what she looked like.
If Rumpelstiltskin hadn’t already suspected Belle’s identity when this news started to arrive, then the official proclamation that appeared in the market square sealed the deal.
Quite literally, in fact. The Marchlands duchy seal was unmistakable. A stag beneath a fruit tree.
It was the same symbol on the worn signet ring that hung around Belle’s neck.
He looked back to where Belle and Bae were sitting with the barrow of spun yarn they were hoping to sell, and he watched them for a moment. Belle had slipped into their lives so easily; although she did not have any knowledge of peasant life, she had been happy to learn and had taken to it like a duck to water, never once pining for a finer life that she could occasionally half-remember like a dream.
It would be sad to lose her, for both him and Bae; Rumpelstiltskin had grown so fond of her over the past couple of months that he couldn’t imagine going back to the lonely life that they’d had before. Belle had brought additional happiness into their home with her very presence, and he didn’t want to lose that.
Perhaps there was the possibility of gaining a few more days or weeks, if he could keep her from seeing this notice and the link to her ring, but Rumpelstiltskin shook his head at the idea.
Belle needed to get back to her own family; although she seemed happy in this life that they had shared for the past weeks, this wasn’t her life. She was a lady, not a peasant, and she belonged with her own people. Her parents were anxious to have her back safely, and had Belle remembered who her parents were, then she would no doubt be anxious to get back to them.
It would be selfish to try and keep him with her for longer than he was entitled to her presence. After all, maybe a reunion would be what it would take to bring Belle’s memories back. He knew how frustrated she was at not knowing anything about herself and her life prior to the accident.
No, he was going to have to let her go. It was the best way, for everyone.
“Belle.”
She looked up on hearing him call, giving him her brilliant smile once more, and he beckoned her over to where he was looking at the proclamation.
“What is it, Rumpel?”
“I think I may have found your family.”
Belle stared at the paper pinned up on the tree, and she touched the front of her dress where the ring sat beneath.
“Do you really think that could be me?” she asked.
“I would say that the evidence is fairly solid.”
“Oh.”
For a long time, Belle just stared at the notice, but it was clear that her eyes were looking straight through it as she toyed with the ring, a little furrow forming between her brows.
“I guess I should probably go and see them,” she said eventually, but she sounded about as enthusiastic about the entire thing as Rumpelstiltskin felt. It struck a note with him, and he ventured to probe a little further.
“You don’t sound very happy.”
“Well, I’m not unhappy.” Belle sighed. “I just don’t remember. I should be excited about finding my family and getting back to them, but I can’t remember anything about them. Did I have a loving relationship with my parents, or was it distant and cold? It’s not like I would be going back to live in the lap of luxury that I’d probably been accustomed to - the Marchlands have been razed and the people displaced. I’d be no better off than I am now. And…”
A little blush began to rise in her cheeks, and she trailed off, looking away.
“Belle?”
“This feels like home,” Belle admitted, finally looking Rumpelstiltskin in the eye. “Here, with you and Bae. You’ve been so good to me, taking me in when you knew nothing about me and sharing your home and your food and your lives with someone you didn’t owe anything to. And I know it would be selfish for me to stay when there’s someone else out there looking for me and I have a proper place in the world; I shouldn’t prevail upon your hospitality any further, but… I like the life that I’ve been building here, and the things I’ve been learning. It feels like something that’s completely mine. And then there’s you and Bae… I’ve grown so fond of you both, and I don’t want to just up and leave you for some people I don’t even remember.”
Rumpelstiltskin was silent for a long time, digesting what Belle had just said. Whilst he had been wanting to keep her near him, he had never entertained the notion that she might actually want to stay.
“You know, you don’t have to go,” he said softly. “You’re welcome to stay with us for as long as you like.”
Belle smiled. “Thank you, Rumpel. That means so much to me, and I would love to stay with you for as long as I can. But if these people really are my parents and they’re really looking for me, then I think I owe it to them to at least let them know that I’m still alive and I haven’t been trampled by ogres. But…” The furrow came back into her brows, but this time it was one of deep thought rather than sorrow. “Maybe there’s a way after all.”
Everything happened rather quickly after that. Rumpelstiltskin and Bae escorted Belle to the tavern where the duke and duchess of the Marchlands were lodging, waiting outside whilst Belle went in to see them. The minutes stretched on into what felt like hours, although Rumpelstiltskin knew that it couldn’t be that long. Presently, Bae tugged on his hand.
“Papa?”
“Yes, Bae?”
“Does this mean that Belle’s going to leave us?”
Rumpelstiltskin looked back at the tavern door. Belle had thought that another way was possible, but he couldn’t see it himself.
“It’s likely, Bae. I mean, we’ve always known that she has her own family somewhere out there. She couldn’t stay with us forever, you know that.”
“Yes.” Bae heaved a long sigh that made him sound far older than his years. “It’s not fair. She was part of our family. This new family can’t just come and take her away like that.”
“Sadly, the world works like that, sometimes., Bae.”
His son folded his arms with a huff. “Well, it shouldn’t.”
Despite feeling the same way himself, Rumpelstiltskin couldn’t help but laugh at Bae’s indignation, and he was still chuckling when Belle emerged from the tavern. She came over to them slowly, walking almost as if she was in a dream, and the little frown line was back between her brows.
“Is everything all right?”
Belle nodded slowly. “I’m definitely their daughter,” she said, “but I still don’t remember them. I guess I was hoping for a magical moment like in books, where I’d see my mother and everything would suddenly fall into place, and I’d have all my memories again and the world would be instantly set to rights with fairy magic or some other such nonsense.” She shook her head. “I suppose it will come with time, but right now, they still feel like strangers to me.” She smiled at Rumpelstiltskin. “You’re not a stranger, though. You’re familiar. I feel safe with you. And… if you’ll have me… I’d like to continue feeling safe with you.”
Rumpelstiltskin took a few moments to make sure he had really heard her correctly, and even then, he did not entirely believe his ears.
“Are you sure? Surely your parents would want you to go home with them.”
Belle glanced back at the tavern. “This is their home, for now. Like I said before, the Marchlands where I grew up and lived with them have been flattened. There’s no home left there. So doesn’t it make more sense for me to stay in the home I’ve been building with you?”
Words failed him. He’d hardly dared to hope before, and he didn’t want to dare now. He thought that he knew Belle well enough to be able to trust that she was not playing some sort of trick on him.
“Rumpel?” Her soft hand - not as soft as it had once been after weeks of hard housework, but still like velvet to Rumpelstiltskin’s skin - touched his cheek. “All of the Marchlanders need to make a new home for now, and I might as well make mine here. Maybe my memories will come back in time, but that won’t negate anything that’s happened since I lost them. It won’t change any of the wonderful new memories I’ve made.”
Rumpelstiltskin chanced to take her hand. “Are you sure about this, Belle?”
Her laugh was bright and musical. “How many times are you going to have to ask me that before you’re convinced? Yes. My home is here now. Whatever home I might remember from before is gone. My parents are here, and they know I’m safe, and we’re close enough that I can get to know them again. I know that things would be different and far more difficult if my previous home was still standing. And I’m not going to pretend that things might get complicated if they decide to go back and rebuild in the Marchlands. But if there’s one thing that these past months have taught me, that you have taught me, Rumpel, it’s that I’m my own person, and no one decides my fate but me.”
If Rumpelstiltskin was stunned by her speech, then he was even more stunned when she pressed her lips against his cheek. He must have looked a complete sight, as Belle burst into giggles when she pulled away.
“I think I broke your father, Bae.”
Bae waved away her concerns. “He’ll be fine. I don’t think a pretty lady’s ever kissed him before. So, does this mean that you’re coming home with us after all, Belle?”
Belle nodded. “Yes. If you’d like that, of course.”
“Yes!” Bae gave a hoot of victory. “Come on, Papa. Let’s go home.”
He took Belle by the hand, dragging her along towards the road that led back to their village. Belle looked back at him, holding out her other hand, and Rumpelstiltskin took it.
He did not know what might happen in the future, but for the present, Belle was content to stay with him, and he would count that as an infinite blessing. And who knew? Maybe the life that she was building with him could turn into a life that they would build together.

Ch. 3
Characters: Colette Marston and Red Army
Tagging: @plumpblueberry @thetwinkims
A/N: It’s been a good while since I wrote Colette but here she is!
Tumblr media
A gentle pat against curly blonde locks startled the young girl. Her head swiveled up; clear blue eyes glazed over with water threatening to turn into more tears. The throbbing of her heart caused her chest to ache. Why didn’t he look angry? Edgar was a master of hiding his emotions, but the death of the King of Hearts by her own hand should be called nothing short of treason.
“I can see why you’re distraught. That was quite a vision to have.”
That’s it? He’d seen what she had. Where were the handcuffs? Wouldn’t he escort her to the cells? Her head spun, unable to tear her blurry gaze away from the Jack. “But I…”
“You should be well aware that King Lancelot won’t be foiled so easily, but the protocol of your visions is to have you tip them in our favor. You’ll work on it and report back to me, alright?” He’d inform his two superiors in private. The last thing the child needed was an explosion from Jonah.
Edgar relayed the vision to Zero without one important detail. Everything remained the same. Central quarter in absolute ruin. Destruction beyond comprehension, likely the end of Cradle altogether. And finally, a hooded figure before a wounded Lancelot, about to deal the final blow. Not a mention of Colette at all.
He hadn’t seen her as the villain of their tragic future?
Colette could hardly eat the breakfast that was served and decided to dump it in the trash. She couldn’t imagine what would possess her to harm Lancelot. He’d been incredibly kind to her since she’d arrived, and unlike most adults, he also had innate magical abilities.
“Don’t let Jonah catch you or he’ll give you a lecture.”
The sudden comment startled the girl and the plate slipped from her fingers, shattering into various pieces on the floor. The racket brought out the kitchen staff.
“Ouh-” Kyle pressed his palms against his ears, shaking his head gently. His hungover state did not appreciate the loud noise. Golden eyes darted over her features, concern showing in the crease between his brows. “You look pale. How are you feeling?”
Using magic drained her energy, like all magic users, and yet it wasn’t near as severe as with Lancelot. Perhaps it was her age. Not much information was available about natural magic users since they were a rare breed. Kyle had to compile his own research and continually build it with first hand knowledge. This instance, whether magic or not, something wasn’t right.
He bent down to place the back of his hand against her forehead. “Fever.”
Colette leaned into his touch, reaching out to grab his other hand and place it against her cheek. “Your hands are cold. It feels really good.” She swayed slightly, threatening to fall over at any moment. Her whole body felt heavy.
“Yeah, you’re coming with me. I’m officially committing you to the infirmary until this fever breaks.” The doctor rarely gave any orders, but this one he’d follow through with. Not that he truly needed to. The eight year old would obey any task or request given by an officer because Lancelot had told her to.
Shuffling the child to the infirmary, Kyle carefully observed her climb onto the empty bed near the window. It allowed her to see outside even when she felt ill. She wobbled, looking fainter than before. “This new vision. Did it keep you from sleeping?”
“Yes and—” The hesitation in her voice evident.
Kyle pulled up a stool, pouring a spoonful of medicine to aid in reducing the fever and allowing her to sleep. “You know you can tell me anything and it stays between us.”
Colette’s features soured as she dutifully swallowed the liquid. “Zero had to stop me from almost falling down the stairs to the storage building. I don’t… know how I got there.” If he hadn’t grabbed her, she might have been injured or worse. Those thoughts scared her terribly.
“Hmm. That is worrisome. You’ve never slept walk with a vision before.”
“What if it happens again? What if-” She nearly choked on her own words, visibily working herself up over the endless possibilities of what could go wrong. If the abilities she possessed allowed her to move without her own consent, it would be reasonable to believe that she could also wield attack spells and harm someone.
The doctor took her trembling hands and brushed his thumbs across the back soothingly. Having a meltdown would not aid in her recovery. “Easy, kiddo. Take a deep breath.” Kyle mimicked doing so as she did. “You don’t have to worry about that right now. I’ll be here the whole time you’re asleep, alright?”
He helped her settle beneath sheet, staying by her side until her breathing evened out. Although she silently struggled, the medicine worked her into a deep sleep. Kyle moved to his desk, taking notes of all the effects of her magic. The file thick with his scribbled pages of mostly questions and a few observations. Truly, magic in humans was a vast field of unknowns.
A few soldiers came and went, receiving treatments for minor injuries. The sun had slid completely beyond the horizon, giving the moon it’s time to light the sky in a silver glow surrounded by twinkling stars. The girl still wishing to rest hid beneath the sheet, squeezing her eyes shut at the conversation beyond the cracked door.
“That’s an order, Kyle. I must speak with her straight away.” Jonah’s harsh tone laced with urgency. It came as no surprise. He always reacted in such a way whenever it came to the King of Hearts.
The Seven sighed but continued to block the doorway, his back shielding anymore light from spilling into the darkened infirmary. “You’re only going to scare her. This is why Edgar was left in charge of this particular vision. You overreact.”
“Overreact? How is one to react with the news that there is an imminent attack on King Lancelot?”
“Calmly.”
“I am calm!” Jonah snapped, not willing to back down on this subject.
Without the knowledge of how she managed to show Edgar the vision and not reveal herself in it, Colette shivered. Jonah would surely lock her away for her participation, regardless of the reason behind it. She couldn’t live with the harsh judgement that would reside behind those amber eyes that used to be soft and kind when directed at her.
No, facing Jonah was simply too much.
Silently moving to the end of the bed, the girl unlocked the window and shoved the pane upward to escape. The task much harder than anticipated. Her knee dug into the sill, sending a wave of pain up her leg. Colette tumbled forward, rolling unceremoniously across the shrub beneath before smacking into the freshly watered soil of the flowerbed. “Ouch.”
A shadow fell over her. Matching clear blue eyes met as the young Two of Hearts turned her gaze upwards. Being caught by a patrol guard might have been less embarrassing. Her dress sullied with stains of green and brown, blonde curls stuck with twigs and leaves. Not the least bit presentable to be found by their prestigious leader.
“What is the meaning of this, Colette?”

When Life is a Song
Genis narrowed his eyes, looking up at Lloyd and Colette both. “You two… What kind of dancing was that?” He frowned, standing on his tip toes, trying his best to be tall, though in comparison to his already tall friends, this only slightly worked. “How about we leave some room for Martel, huh?"
In which there is awkward dancing, awkward confessions, and awkward musings about a sleeping Goddess.
Fandom: Tales of Symphonia Characters/Pairing: Lloyd Irving/Colette Brunel, Genis Sage, Raine Sage Rating: G Mirror Link: AO3 Notes: This was a secret santa gift made for @poesby for the Colloyd discord server! Thanks so much for being a part of it! I had so much fun with this prompt.
-
It was at a school dance that Lloyd first realized he was in love with Colette.
That dance happened just a year before Colette would be off on her journey to regenerate the world, Lloyd remembered. No oracles had come down to Sylvarant, and no Desians had gone to attack the Martel Temple where she would train and take her lessons on the scriptures of the Angels. It was still just in the tail-end of spring, before the air would grow more humid with the coming of summer. The farmer’s crops had yielded their share, and the treaty still kept them safe, as far as everyone was concerned.
It was the Professor that had arranged the school dance to begin with, which had always confused Lloyd back then, even though she claimed that it was to celebrate a successful school year. Only years later, after the journey, would he realize that perhaps this had been his teacher’s way of giving Colette what had been denied her for so long. Never allowed outside of the village, with sometimes her entire days being holed up in that temple, Colette barely got to just relax and enjoy the normalcy that everyone else had.
But of course, Raine had to make that be a part of school somehow.
“Lloyd! Why are you so late?!” Genis was standing at the wooden door to the Iselian schoolhouse, hands on his hips, and looking very displeased. The air around them was warm, even in the early evening, carrying the scent of the oak trees that surrounded the village. “The party started a half hour ago!”
“Gah, sorry!” Lloyd said, rushing up to the entrance as if he had just run all the way from his house. Which, well, he did! Once he realized he was late… “Noishe doesn’t like to walk around the forest at night, and it’s really dark! Monsters are also kind of a pain…”
Genis wasn’t convinced. He eyed Lloyd’s outfit. “And you just wore the same thing you wear every day to a party ever since you were 13?”
“It’s not the same thing!” Lloyd proudly pointed at his familiar red jacket, but specifically at the buttons that lined up his torso and sleeves. “See? These are golden buttons! This is my fancy jacket!”
“…That’s stupid. You can barely even tell they’re different in the light!”
“At least I’m not wearing a lame bowtie,” Lloyd argued back. Bright red and decorating Genis’ little suit like he was a doll, Lloyd would have teased more had he not felt Raine’s sudden smack across the back of his head, his only warning being the slow smile on Genis’ face just a half-second before.
“Don’t be rude, Lloyd. And you are very late. This is going to affect your grade, you know.”
“What?! I’m being graded for a school party?!” But he barely got to argue, already being pushed along into the schoolhouse by Genis. To think that he’d have to go to school still on a weekend…
He hadn’t realized how that night would be so important to him then.
The schoolhouse wasn’t big, containing only one room for the entire class. But with the desks put away, replaced with tables of home-cooked food from local chefs in the village, and fun party decorations that lined the walls, it looked so entirely different. Streamers that were a multitude of colors flowed down from the ceiling, and even some balloons were tied around the place, some having cut loose and now floating way up high to the wooden beams overhead.
And honestly, to Lloyd, it still felt a bit like another school day with the other students here too. The girls who always gossiped in the corner were chatting away in the very same place, but wearing different dresses that looked like the colors of the grass outside. And the boys that he remembered being part of Professor Sage’s fan club were milled about in a small group, sneaking occasional glances towards the door where Lloyd and Genis came through, groaning when seeing their teacher wasn’t with them. They always had more and more members than he thought…
But the ages of everyone also ranged all over the place, from those being as old as him, to others as young as seven. He could already see a group of the youngest students trying to play tag with each other while flitting about the tables, treating the party as if it was just another recess period. That was what happened when everyone in the village had their classes at one place and with just one room.
But through all that, through all the people he recognized and the color that brightened the walls, he searched for her, barely finding a trace.
“Where’s Colette?” he finally asked Genis.
The boy pointed to the back of the classroom-turned party hall. “Over there when I last saw her. She tripped, and well…”
Lloyd winced, knowing exactly what that meant. “Ah man, again?” Hopefully she was okay, but then again this was the usual for her.
“She didn’t mess with my decorations at least, but I made sure Raine healed her of any injuries.” Genis nodded, looking proud of himself for that decision. “Anyway, I don’t think she’s moved from their since.”
“Why aren’t you hanging out her? She’s probably been really bored of this party!” Now Lloyd was starting to feel bad about being late if Colette had been by herself this whole time.
“Hey! It’s not boring!” Genis argued. “Besides, I can’t hang out as I’m in charge of chaperoning. Well, sis is, but I’m helping out!”
Lloyd tilted his head. “Chapa what?”
Genis frowned. “...Just go to her.”
Honestly, Lloyd didn’t need to be told twice, already heading off while Genis was still talking. “Whatever you say!!” Saying the last bit in a shout was not exactly the smartest move, the sound traveling easily in the room and making heads turn; from the kids playing tag, to the boys still gossiping, openly wondering why Raine wasn’t here yet…
It made her head turn too, just in time.
Underneath the dim lights of the set table lamps and the stars outside, he saw Colette, still brushing away the wood chips from her dress. A familiar-shaped hole was just behind her, which was about her very height and width. Maybe something that Lloyd could help fix up later…
But it was at his sudden shout, bouncing across the room that took her attention, made her turn to see him coming over. “Lloyd! You finally made it!”
And for one moment, Lloyd slowed his steps.
Back then, maybe Lloyd hadn’t understood what he felt just yet. Colette’s dress was different from her usual one, still covering her from head to toe. But it was more flowy than her usual, the edges trimmed with lace, her hem printed with star-shaped patterns. It was a summer dress perfect for the warm air outside, the kind that would let her feel the summer breeze. Her hair was also tied up in a bun, showing off more of her face, such as the red on her cheeks, and the dimples that formed whenever she smiled.
Lloyd hadn’t understood why his heart had beat so strangely back then, why he took a moment to speak… and why he suddenly felt a little ashamed at how he dressed, wishing he had gotten something cooler, like a cape, or maybe even a party mask… “Uh, hey Colette! Why are still over here?”
Colette laughed, though she looked nervous as she did so, still brushing away more invisible dust from her dress. “Ah, well, I messed up…”
She gestured to that hole, scratching her cheek in embarrassment. “I’m not even sure how I did it this time!”
“Oh right… It must be all these balloons here,” Lloyd offered as an explanation. “They’re in the way of the floor a lot!”
“Aw, but they’re really cute. I was afraid I’d pop them if I get too close.”
Lloyd reached out to one balloon floating nearby, its pink color so bright and pastel-shaded that it drew the eye a bit. “Nah, there’s no way these can just pop that easily!” He took its string, pulling it to him quickly. “You just gotta-” Pop!
The sound made both Lloyd and Colette flinch, along with a few other people who stood nearby. From the front of the room, he heard Genis yell out to him. “Lloyd! Careful with those!”
“Er, sorry about that!” Now Lloyd held a completely deflated balloon by its string, smiling at Colette shamefacedly. “Guess we both should be careful…”
Colette giggled. “It’s okay, I’m just happy you’re here. I thought that maybe you wouldn’t come.”
“No way! I uh, did kinda forget for a little bit, but then I remembered!”
Her smile was gentle in that dim light, and it was different than what Lloyd was used to, even though he was always seeing Colette’s smiles each day. How come…? She spoke again, breaking the brief little spell he was under. “And you have new clothes too! I really like those golden buttons.”
Lloyd stood there in shock. She noticed! “Y-yeah! It’s my fancy set! See, look, look!” He turned around, showing off the white ribbon strips that streamed from his collar, looking the usual to the untrained eye until…
“Oh! There’s patterns on it!” Colette said, reaching out to hold one of the ribbons, so softly in her hands. “They look like little dogs!”
“Hehe. I was using Noishe as a subject to make these! I still gotta get better at sewing though…” He turned back around, while Colette still held onto that ribbon, tracing the shape along the surface. He stared at what she wore as well, so used to her thick overcoat and not the dress that fluttered about her legs freely. “And, uh, you look pretty great too!”
“Hehe, thanks. Usually the Church doesn’t want me to but… they said it was okay for tonight.” Her voice lowered a fraction, her fingers still twiddling with the ribbons until the note of a flute floated in the air. She dropped it in surprise, raising her head. “Oh!”
Lloyd turned around, seeing some of the other students gathered near the very front of the classroom (party room?); one girl was holding up the flute that played softly, while a spectacled boy was by her side, strumming a guitar, and another was holding up a triangle, waiting for the perfect moment to strike it… “Isn’t that the music club?” he asked aloud.
“Oh, they’re playing for the party! That’s so nice.” Colette clasped her hands to her chest as some of the other students moved from their groups to go out into the middle of the room. The music was still in its beginning phases, but the tune was finding its place, delivering a rhythm that even the youngest student could jump around to. The song was simple, the beat easy to nod heads to.
“Wow…” Lloyd hadn’t expected this party to be much of anything, but the music stirred something in his chest. Did Iselia do stuff like this often? Was this what he was missing living so far off in the forests with his dad? He looked at Colette, finding her suddenly very quiet, eyes rapt to the front of the room.
“Colette, what’s up?” he asked.
“Hm? Ah nothing! Well maybe just, um, Lloyd…” Her voice held something soft that he didn’t understand, not just yet still, but it made him give her his full attention either way. The candlelight within the lamps shone off her tied-up hair, illuminated the stars on her dress, all as the music stirred louder around them. “Do you think… you want to try dancing?”
Lloyd only felt a twinge of nervousness – just a bit. But not enough to make him hesitate or refuse. With a grin, he held out his hand for Colette to take. “Yeah! Just uh, I haven’t ever danced before.”
“Hehe, that’s okay! I haven’t done anything like this before either, I think.”
“So that sounds like a pretty good excuse to try it then,” he teased, feeling her hand go in his. It always felt so natural to hold her hand like this, like it was just the right size when her palm pressed against his. His heart went ba-dump! all the sudden, but he only focused on Colette, walking with her to the floor, hearing that same flute play with more energy, the student musicians giving it all they had.
On the way, Colette caught the edge of her shoe against a small pile of confetti on the ground. Lloyd reached out with both arms to catch her, pulling her up. “Oh, uh, watch out for those!” It was literally just paper Colette had tripped on but somehow that was enough…
“Ah, I’m sorry… I’m just too clumsy.” She bit her lip. “Maybe this is silly…”
“Didn’t you just say you wanted to try?” Lloyd asked, genuinely wondering. And they were already here, weren’t they? A brief glance to their surroundings showed him how everyone else danced too; many of them just excitedly moving around each other in erratic patterns, while others interlocked their arms together, skipping across the floor. Genis was to the side, arms crossed, looking out over the place with a certain pride, with Raine finally not far behind. She was taking a red pen to a piece of paper she held in her hand… She really was grading people right now!
He had a few ideas on how he couldn’t fail on this.
Lloyd quickly looped his right arm into Colette’s left, keeping her close. He heard her lightly gasp, but she didn’t move away, her cheek brushing against his shoulder as she turned to him. “How about this? You definitely can’t fall if we dance this way!”
Colette looked radiant before nodding in approval. The warm light over her hair made it glow, and she gripped Lloyd’s arm back just as tightly. “Okay!”
Lloyd had no idea what song was playing, or if it was a mish-mash of many at once. (The students were still learning, after all). But as he took Colette out to the floor, he made sure to keep her standing upright. The most he knew about dancing was a few dwarven jigs, and Lloyd quickly kicked out his legs to imitate such a thing, moving to the beat of the song(s). “Dad taught me this!”
“Oh, I wanna try!” Colette saw and then attempted to follow through. The hem of her dress flew along with her, and already Lloyd could see her tilt a bit backwards at the motion. But he kept hold of her fast, and even when she lost her balance, soon she was falling back against his arm safely. “Ah! I almost fell again…”
“But you didn’t! See? I won’t drop you, promise.”
Colette’s face was nearby, a few stray blonde strands already slipping from her bun. “Okay, I trust you!”
Even as they tried out their dwarven steps that a few people raised an eyebrow at, Lloyd felt the night rush around him. They were clumsy on their feet, and they bumped into other pairs that were also out on the floor. But even through all the stumbles, Lloyd felt his cheeks ache with a constant smile.
Even for a party that he was being graded on, this wasn’t so bad at all.
Still, there were a few hiccups along their dancing journey. Colette would somehow, through by her own little miracles, accidently step on someone else’s toes, earning a complaint from the victim. “Sorry!” she’d say, and then trip over another person, and then sometimes, even accidentally planting her heel against the tip of Lloyd’s boots.
“Ah! Oh no…”
“Hey, that’s nothing!” Lloyd reassured, the pain simply brief and then forgotten. But he’d have to carry her closer, or hold her nearer to avoid everyone else. “Just follow my lead!”
“I thought I was…”
“Oh, watch out for that other balloon!” he warned before neatly whisking Colette off her feet, saving her from accidentally popping the party decoration. “Phew. Just in time.”
“S-Sorry about that!” Colette giggled, hands placed on his shoulders as he held her up by the waist. Her cheeks were red from their dancing, and she was catching her breath, all while she grinned so wide.
Lloyd didn’t move for a few moments, staring at her before finally getting the idea to set her down. “No more apologizing, remember?” he teased, one hand slipping from her side while the other lingered. Because they were going to keep dancing! Unless she was tired? “Did you wanna keep going?”
Colette nodded, and the relief in Lloyd was so palpable, he wondered then just what he would have felt if she had said no. The music still went in their same beat, bringing everyone else on the floor into more energetic movement. A pair of young children swerved around them both, one of them bumping against Colette’s leg and offsetting the precarious balance she always had.
With hardly any sound, she fell forward. Lloyd caught her deftly by the waist once more, because it was natural to do so. She was always so light between his fingers.
“Still not letting you fall,” he said to her with a smile, helping her stand up just a bit. “No matter how many little kids run into you!” In this room right now, that was a very high probability.
“Hehe…I’ll do the same for you!” Colette said, straightening, but only a bit. She was leaning against his chest, head tilted downward. He still held her, and she felt perfect against his palms. “Wow, those buttons are really shiny…”
“Told ya they were!” Lloyd said with pride, having made sure to extra polish them before coming over. But even with that, and the frenzy of the students around them who still danced to the music, he felt a little calmer then usual. Colette hadn’t moved away and he didn’t want to question why.
“Sorry,” she whispered again, hands reaching up to clasp before her chest. But her knuckles just brushed against the front of his jacket. Her fingers loosened their hold on each other. “Just trying not to trip…”
She was shuffling her feet across the floor. Lloyd found that he did the same, keeping the slow, slow pace with her.
Were they still dancing? It didn’t match the music, or everyone else around them…but he liked it.
“Dork, don’t apologize,” he chided once again, but softer. Would she be able to hear him through the noise? But she was so near, she must have. Her hands finally let go of each other to press against his jacket lightly. “But, this works out, doesn’t it?”
“Hm?” Colette, eyes half-lidded, raised them to meet Lloyd’s own.
“If you’re tired but don’t wanna stop dancing, we can just do this.” This seemed like the perfect solution, that and holding Colette this way made him feel so warm. “Right?”
“Yeah, hehe.” She nodded, her cheeks still a bit red, her hair still reflecting the dim light of the room. “Just tired… And, you don’t mind?”
He had more to say, but the way she looked up at him made his words catch in his throat for a short moment. How to say that he really, honestly, liked this so much? “I don’t mind…” he told her, and as she lingered in his hold, he wanted to say something more. “Hey, um…”
Colette gave him all her attention, a hand now over one of those bright buttons of his. “Yes, Lloyd?”
Something that his voice was doing, his own brain barely able to catch up. But with Colette, it felt natural still. Along with…
“Do you think…that maybe you and I could-”
“Noooope!”
And then he felt a sudden force between them, with Colette somehow further away from him? But she looked just as confused in the position, her hands held up in the air with surprise. Huh? What is-?
It was only the tell-tale peek of silver hair that brought Lloyd’s eyes down to see Genis was right in-between them, hands pressed against their stomachs as he pushed. “Red flag, you two!”
Both Lloyd and Colette blinked, looking down at their tiny friend, who was doing all he can to stretch out his arms. “Oh, Genis!” said Colette, smiling down at him, even though she was still very confused. “Um, is something wrong?”
Lloyd was less nice about it. “Yeah, what gives? Ow!” Also, Genis was pushing on his stomach way too hard!
Genis narrowed his eyes, looking up at Lloyd and Colette both. “You two… What kind of dancing was that?” He frowned, standing on his tip toes, trying his best to be tall, though in comparison to his already tall friends, this only slightly worked. “How about we leave some room for Martel, huh?”
That… made no sense to Lloyd at all. “What are you talking about?”
“But… Martel isn’t here though.” Colette argued, though she sounded just as confused. “I mean, I guess she is everywhere technically… Oh, Genis! Can you talk to Martel? Is she dancing with us?” Then a softer question, her concern so apparent. “Are we squeezing her too tight?
“N-No! It’s an expression!” Genis sighed, putting down his arms but still standing in-between them. “You’re getting way too lovey-dovey in here. You’re just lucky my sis isn’t watching right now.”
And that was it, the moment Lloyd completely understood what he had been feeling all evening just then. He could only hope the light was dim enough to not show off his blush, and that the crack in his voice was unnoticeable. “K-Knock it off!” Had that been it all along?
Colette also looked a little shocked…. Though maybe for different reasons. “I didn’t know Martel would be so angry…” She bowed her head to Genis. “I’ll tell her I’m sorry.”
“Colette, I just said it was an expression! Agh, forget it.” Genis still hadn’t gotten out of their way, which probably made Lloyd more annoyed at his friend then he had ever been. “I have to watch out for you guys all the time.”
“No you don’t!” Lloyd argued. “We’re older than you!”
“Sometimes I honestly wonder about that.”
Colette was more patient than Lloyd, but her hands still hovered over her chest, fiddling with her fingers as she could only just stand and wait. “Um, does this mean we’re not allowed to dance anymore?”
Genis sighed and waved away the question, already stepping away. “Go ahead, but again: No lovey dovey stuff. It’s weird!”
Lloyd was about to protest that it wasn’t that lovey! Even if the memory of holding Colette close got his heart racing just a little bit… But Colette stepped forward, taking Lloyd’s right hand in her left, while placing her other hand on his shoulder. The way she took over made him lose his very track of thought.
“Is something like this okay? Oh, maybe you can dance with us too, Genis!”
Genis flushed then. “No way! I’m still chaperoning! So you two better keep those hands where I can see them!” Pointing at his two friends, Genis walked off, maneuvering easily between other dancing pairs across the floor.
Lloyd stood there now, gripping her hand tightly in his, unused to this somewhat fancy dancing position she had gotten them into. “Is he still watching us?” Lloyd asked Colette, who still faced the direction Genis had gone off to.
Colette leaned past his shoulder slightly, the loose collar of her dress falling gently across her neck. The sight made him consider a few new feelings in him. “A little bit… But he keeps looking at the musicians a lot!”
“Genis always wanted to play that flute,” Lloyd said, letting his other hand fall to her waist again. Again, fitting so perfectly against his palm. “Um, did you still wanna dance?”
She smiled up at him, and even though she wasn’t as near, the sight of it got him feeling warm. “Only if you want to.”
So Lloyd took her hand and they tried again to dance across the floor with the others, not as slow as before, but careful to not trip Colette’s feet. Still, he had to swerve her out of the way of an excited third-grader, or another couple that kept stepping too near their pace. It was only a matter of time before Colette tripped again!
“If we danced outside it’d probably easier…” he whined aloud, needing to make another quick swerve to the left to keep Colette from running into a table. “More room to move around, also way less stuffy than in here!” That was also one other issue; having so many people packed into one large room made him yearn for fresh air.
“Hehe, and the moon outside looks really pretty too.” Colette turned her head to the windows, where the torches that served as Iselia’s light helped illuminate the dirt roads outside.
“You think so? I guess it kinda does.” Lloyd looked too, then back to Colette. She blinked up at him as he shifted his hands to hold both of her own. “Is Genis still watching?”
A soft pause, but she looked again past him. Her loose hair tumbled just past the shell of her ear. She then giggled. “He’s now trying to play the flute too!”
Perfect. He shared with her a grin, all while still holding her hands, that he had shared with her so much over the years, the kind that he knew Colette would recognize what it meant.
“So,” he started to ask, tilting his head towards the door. He had again seen the night sky outside, how inviting it looked, with the stars so intensely bright, with even the upright torches so warm. “Wanna sneak out?”
The party was festive, with music that was now accompanied by a few off-beat tunes from a certain flute. But it was always nicer when it was just the two of them anyway.
“Oh…” Colette breathed, and then he saw the hint of a smile at the corner of her lips. “You think we could?”
“Genis is distracted.” Another piercing flute note that made Lloyd wince slightly. Yeah, he was definitely distracted. “It’s now or never!”
He barely had to wait for Colette to decide – who already locked his arm in hers, head just slightly touching his shoulder.
“Just so I don’t trip,” she said, winking at him.
Lloyd knew exactly what he was feeling then, and it only made him smile. “Yeah!”
With the two of them together, they had all the awkward grace of a stumbling newborn deer, but it hadn’t mattered much. They had rushed out from the schoolhouse, once again underneath the soothing dark sky. Lloyd quickly ushered Colette, their boots stepping hard on the wooden doorsteps. “Come on, come on!”
“I am!” Colette agreed, but her eyes had caught something else, just behind them as they finally got out into the open world before them. “Oh, is that the Professor…?”
Lloyd swore he felt his blood leave his face at the mention of it. He dared to turn, saw that familiar frown framed by silver hair as their teacher stomped after them. “Uhhh let’s go right now! Hurry!”
“Waa! O-Okay!” And somehow, in their mad dash away from the schoolhouse, Colette didn’t trip or slow down. She held fast to Lloyd’s arm, and rushed alongside him down the Iselian roads. Dirt kicked up at their travel, but neither really cared at all.
-
“Okay…I think we lost her,” Lloyd said as stopped at a nearby hill to catch his breath. It was a place that overlooked Iselia, but still stayed clear of the forests where monsters roamed. He winced then, remembering. “Man…I probably got detention for a week now.”
Colette was also panting a bit, but each breath she let out was like an airy giggle, making her shoulders shake. “We ran so fast! I think I tore my dress a little too!”
“Huh!?” Lloyd snapped his head up towards her, and then immediately saw that tear on the hem of her outfit. “Dammit, it must have been when we ran past that tree and a branch got you… Argh, I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?” Colette asked, sticking out her tongue at him. “But if you really wanted, maybe you can fix it for me later.”
“Oh, yeah! I can do that!” Lloyd figured he could use the practice at sewing. If he could stitch up the face of a dog into his ribbons, he could fix up a dress!
“And besides, we can dance out here.” Colette reached forward to grasp his hands. “Like you said?”
“Heh, already? There’s no music this time, but we don’t need it!” And he went to grasp her hand in his, the other settling on her waist. “And no people to trip you.”
“Yeah! Unless you do.” Another tease, prompting out a ‘Hey!’ from Lloyd but she only laughed, and so did he. The night air was comfortable, and the flowers that were near surrounded them with the scent of pollen, mixed in with the pine from the forest.
And then – another trip.
Colette this time got her boot caught up in a tangled nest of grass stalks and weeds. She fell back, pulling Lloyd down with her until they were both sitting on the grass, legs askew.
“You let me fall!” she told him with a grin.
“I didn’t think you could even fall now!” Lloyd protested. He sat up straighter in the grass, hands still on Colette as he helped her do the same. “I want a do-over.”
It must have been something from before that made him still keep his hand in hers, that made his thumb brush against her dress, now not only torn, but stained from the grass. He hoped she wouldn’t be in trouble, not with her grandmother, or the Church, or with Professor Sage who had just saw them sneak out…
“Lloyd…” Colette asked, and her voice was now more serious than before. It made him pause, wondering. Maybe he was being too weird with her now, and she didn’t like it and- “Didn’t you want to ask me something before?”
Oh. He hadn’t expected that. There was no warm candlelight to color her hair, but the moon made it shine even more, highlighted the many ruffles and folds of her dress.
“Haha, um…” He did know. He knew exactly what he wanted to ask, even before he understood the significance. “It’s too lame though.”
“I won’t think so,” Colette reassured him.
“Why do you say that?” he asked, curious.
“Because it’s you, Lloyd. I know I’ll be okay with what you want to say.”
She was okay with being with him too, away from the party, their hands still clasped.
“Ah well…” he hedged, feeling suddenly so childish in all the wrong ways. “Maybe it’s a weird thing to ask.”
At that, Colette only looked even more curious, looking up at him. No crowd to continually make her trip, or the well-meaning friend of theirs to keep them from getting too close, or the teacher who probably already had their grades set.
It was just Colette, and no one else.
“Do you think, um…” Lloyd started, worried for an interruption; from the sky, from the forest nearby, or from Colette. But she waited for him to move on, to be brave enough in what to say. “Do you think you and I could be…I dunno, uh… more than…” It was sounding worse by the minute, even as he couldn’t stop holding her. “More than friends?”
It was the best he could say, and he only hoped that the silence that followed would be merciful enough. Maybe Colette would only make fun of him a little bit.
“Lloyd, is this your way of asking to kiss me?”
Huh?! Wait, is it?! He blinked, staring at Colette, who seemed to have also made her own little gamble on what should happen next. Her cheeks were still flushed, even long after they had stopped dancing and running, and laughing…
Maybe it was dumb, to take her bet just then. But he leaned down to kiss her, just like he wanted to at the dance so suddenly before being pushed away. It was quick and tinged with a bit of panic, but he felt Colette press against him, not turning away.
He was already laughing in mid-kiss, pulling away only to cup her face in his hands. “You’re really a dork.”
“So are you,” she told him, matching his smile. But then there was something so sad in her eyes then, that it made Lloyd pause.
“Oh…was it that bad?” he asked. It had been his first kiss! Not exactly something one could practice…
“No, not that! It was… really nice.” Colette reached up to brush her fingers against his hands, happy to keep him near. “I’m just thinking about what Genis said.”
Lloyd’s mind stilled. “You were thinking of Genis when you kissed me?”
“Not like that!” she argued with a pout. “It’s just, what he said, I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Lloyd let his hands fall from her cheeks to rest on her shoulders. “You’re gonna have to remind me what he said because I completely forgot.” Really, Genis was the last thing on his mind right now!
Colette wavered, hands now brushing from his wrists down to his arms, always continually touching him. He hoped she would keep doing that. “Lloyd, do you think…Martel would be okay with this?”
That had been unexpected, a weird splash of cold water that just got dumped on his head. “Um, why are we talking about Church things right now?” As if talking about Genis after their kiss wasn’t weird enough!
“Maybe she wouldn’t… Because I’m supposed to…” Then she trailed off, stopped.
Lloyd saw the defeat her eyes, a pain in them that he hadn’t understood back then. There had been so much he didn’t truly get until it was too late.
Maybe what he said next was careless, but the feeling gripped his ribs, wanting to be known. “It doesn’t matter what Martel thinks,” he said, and saw Colette’s eyes widen. “I mean! Well…this doesn’t have anything to do with her, does it?”
Colette blinked, her hands gripping his tight. “It doesn’t?” she repeated, thinking it over.
“I mean, not that she’s not important!” All he ever heard about Martel was how important she was, especially to Colette, a Chosen! He didn’t want to make her feel bad, but how best could he explain? “It’s just, well, this isn’t part of being a Chosen. So… it doesn’t have anything to do with her, right? Just us.” He paused, thinking it over again, liking that so much suddenly. “It’s just us right now.”
Colette still hesitated, and suddenly he was understanding that whatever she struggled with now, she had struggled with for years and years. All of it unraveling right before him, in his very hold.
“But anything I do… has to do with Martel.” She looked down, right at those golden buttons of his. “So, shouldn’t I…”
Lloyd tried one last thing, a thrown-out fact in class that he had somehow been able to retain. “But Martel is asleep. Would she even know what you’re doing?”
Colette didn’t say anything, silent, considering.
“And besides…” Lloyd continued. “Martel is supposed to be good and kind. So, even if she was awake and everything…why wouldn’t she want her Chosen to be happy?”
Still Colette stayed silent, still, she would not say anything.
Lloyd worried just then he had messed up, but he couldn’t take back what he meant. “But it only matters if you like this.” He grinned nervously, his lips still tingling from remembered warmth. “Because I definitely do.”
“…Me too,” Colette said, staring up at him again. The words came out fast, all as she looked up at him. “I- I really liked it!”
He hadn’t expected such intensity in her eyes. “Colette?”
“I do too, I really do, I-” she said it even faster, as if she was releasing something held insider her for so long, and then she moved to kiss him again, surprising him with the force of it. But he was eager to learn, eager to take whatever Colette was giving him right now. He held her close, kissing Colette underneath the many stars.
And if Martel really was watching and disapproving them right now in her sleep, Lloyd thought, then he didn’t care. Not if Colette wanted this too. She deserved to want things, and he promised since then, that he would keep helping her believe that with every part of her heart.

Analysis of Dare me (SPOILER)
-BETH:
Is she a psycho bitch? Yes. Is she dangerous? A lot. Does she deserve all this? No, I need to protect her. Beth is a character built purely out of pain and frustration. Having to always stand out, always wanting to attract attention and lack of affection, I think it is obvious why, seeing their family situation, it is a clear example of not judging anyone for their behavior, everyone is fighting an internal battle ... and the scene where she runs out of the night and screams? Master piece. The scene with the anxiety attack by start remembering the rape when the other breaks her mouth? Another master piece. That is the problem of always wanting to be tough, when the inside goes beyond, there are fissures. She is tired of being the puppet of her parents and everyone, she is ready to show what she is and where she is because of herself and not of no one else
-ADDY
Honestly? I don't get her. I don't like her, that’s for sure, she has zero personality and she lets herself be bossed around by anyone. She is neither good nor bad, she is simply what they want her to be. She does not make clear her family and personal environment or anything and I do not know if it is an acting problem or what, but I had no connection with the character.
-REGIONAL SCENE
My heart continues to sound like broken glass after seeing this, I don't know how unsee it. She comes from a moment of frustration after the fight with her stepsister, realizing once again that she will always be everyone's second choice, and she can no longer take it, she needs to know why the person with whom she is most honest (Addy), with the one that she really feels comfortable and whom she feels that she is in a safe place to be herself, the person to whom she has given everything, even with all that, still does not choose her, she genuinely asks what the hell is wrong with her so that no one love her. I think it is the time that Beth has been most vulnerable, from what we have seen, the time that she speaks most honestly, head-on and without masks. I think Addy's response is truly cruel, even if she didn't feel that way for her, just for the affection she has for her, she shouldn't have said that. Still, Beth shows her inner strength once more, after her heart has been broken for the first time, she wipes away tears and she is ready to win.

-KISS SCENE
I've never been so physically hurt by a wlw kiss, it frustrated me so much .. the whole fucking series waiting for a kiss for it to be a flashback... I am very angry that Addy compares the two moments of the rain, with Colette and Beth, I am angry that this special moment with Beth is replaced by another with someone who has just met. I am angry about the subject of the bracelet, seriously, poor Beth. It gives me the feeling during the kiss that Addy is acting on impulse and letting herself go for the moment, that she really didn't kiss her because she wanted to, and it tears me down because the moment she moves away a little and they look at each other, Beth can't contain the smile, She can not believe what will happen, I love the face she has, of pure happiness, that finally she is going to kiss the person who she has long wanted. And when the flashback ends, Addy's smile feels like when you close a chapter of your life and you're ready to move on, like when you're at peace with your past, and I don't like it at all.
Tumblr media
-FINAL
Absolutely everything Beth has done in the last chapters has been to protect Addy (very badly done, yes, but the girl does not know otherwise), and she is going to keep doing it, no matter how many times Addy pushes her away, once she will continue in the first line to protect her always, no matter what happens, because she loves her too much to see how they hurt her (and she hurt herself). I am very pissed off that Addy believes someone who did not even know over her best friend, I understand the frustration that it is for Beth and more because she is in love with her, but I am sure that Beth will continue there. It frustrates me that Addy reproaches Beth over and over again for being selfish, when she is doing nothing but protecting her, even talking alone with the person she least wants to see in the world (her rapist). Actually I don't know if I would like them to end up together, I meen I think it's more than clear that it is a toxic relationship, but besides that, if Addy hasn't already valued Beth after so many years, Beth doesn't deserve to be with a person like that, she deserves to be with someone who values her and loves her as she is, with her demons and internal battles

find your way (back to me) - chapter six
Happy New Year!! Hope y’all are starting off the new year with health and safety for you and your families. Less than 2 weeks away from season 2 and I’m so fucking excited/anxious. Weird note, this chapter is actually the first thing I wrote for the entire story. I had the first part stuck in my head for a little over a month and threw out the concept to my best friend Em. They encouraged me to build the story and so far I’ve been so pleased with it and the reactions y’all have given. Thank you so much for reading and commenting. It really means the world to me.
Three days wears on the psyche, Gil notes in yet another confrontation report. It’d been three days since they’d found the car with Jessica’s phone inside and no sign of her except for her blood on the back window. Malcolm was quickly unraveling, it’s not hard to see. He’d slammed a reporter up against a wall for even suggesting that maybe the world was better off with another Whitly gone. With him visiting Martin the reporter got too close. It didn’t take much more for Malcolm to throw a punch.
He has two of his best cops tailing her children, taking much needed focus away. JT took on Ainsley almost immediately, after her snap with Endicott it’d become an unspoken agreement that she be kept an eye on. He has to bury his feelings every time he sees Malcolm’s hand shake uncontrollably, or when Ainsley comes back from the bathroom with her makeup absolutely perfect but her eyes still red and puffy from the tears she shed in private. It takes all of his power not to go to them and hold them close to his chest.
Every part of him aches.
Two bodies dropped since Jessica’s disappearance. Both had gunshot wounds to the back of the head. Malcolm had made the connection with the information from Martin, thank god. It didn’t take much more to connect the dots after that. They’re lucky Colette even considered it, but they were all desperate. Their time frame was 48 hours. They’re now at 56.
God, where is she?
“Oh my god!” He’s on immediate alert when he hears Ainsley’s scream followed by shouts of other officers. With his hand on his gun he races to where he’d left her and Malcolm earlier.
The room is in absolute chaos, JT is barely holding back Ainsley, her face red while she screams in protest. Several officers have their weapons drawn, Dani included. In the center of it all Malcolm stands with his hands extended, as if reaching for something.
And then he sees her. Her hair is disheveled; dirt and blood are smeared across her face. She’s barefoot, she likely lost her heels long ago. Her once white blouse is also caked in muck and grime. There’s a cloth wrapped around her thigh and one hand is cradling her side. Most startling, though, in her other hand is a knife stained crimson.
“Where is he?” She shouts, her eyes are wild. Gil’s not all that certain she even knows where she is.
“Mom, it’s me.” Malcolm steps a little closer.
“Bright, stand down.” Dani’s voice is a warning.
“It’s ok. She’s not gonna hurt me.” He breathes out slowly, as if trying to calm the entire room at once. “Give me the knife and I’ll find Gil for you. Okay?”
“No!” She springs back and the shouts erupt again.
“Lower your weapons.” Gil barks above the noise. All eyes turn to him, even Jessica’s. They’re reluctant but they obey.
“Mom.” Malcolm steps closer again, drawing her attention back to him. Her face crumples, truly seeing him now for the first time.
“Malcolm.” She sobs, the knife clattering to the floor. She pulls him into a tight hug, her voice barely carrying, “You’re ok. Thank god you’re ok.”
“I’m ok?” Malcolm chuckles humorlessly. The hug is enough for all of the weight that had been on him to crash all at once. He buries his face into her shoulder his whole frame now shaking with the sorrow he kept so tightly wrapped for days.
Once the knife is removed and bagged as evidence JT releases Ainsley and she crashes into the hug too. “Ainsley, baby.” Jessica’s voice carries as she recognizes the touch of her daughter. Her crimson stained fingers tangle in the blonde curls. He puts his gun back in his belt allowing himself to relax. He aches to join the embrace. Jessica lifts her chin and meets his eyes feeling his gaze upon them. Her face slackens, and he realizes just how pale she looks.
“Mom?” His heart drops at Ainsley’s tone, the two younger Whitly’s stumbling backwards with sudden weight. He’s on them in seconds, helping to settle Jessica gently onto the ground. The spot where she had been cradling with her free hand was spreading quickly staining her blouse red. In the embrace the cloth the she’d been holding to her fell as well.
“Call a paramedic.” He orders shucking his coat off to press against the wound. She groans in pain, eyes widening. “I’m sorry, I know.”
“What’s happening?” Malcolm’s arms come around Ainsley, stopping her from coming closer. His hands shake, he’s closed himself off again holding him and his sister together at once. His eyes are glued to his mother, his face as red as Ainsley’s.
“Where is he?” Jessica asks again, this time pleading. His eyes flash to Malcolm, confused. “Please Gil you have to find him. I tried to get him out, I tried.” He shushes her trying to get her to relax.
“Who Jess?” Her fingers grip the front of his sweater, looking around terrified. “Hey, focus. Jess, who do I need to find?” It was too late, however, her eyes slid shut and her body slumped completely against him. He holds his breath until he feels her pulse against his fingertips, strong and steady.
“She just passed out.” Malcolm assures his sister after he likely saw the look of relief cross Gil’s face. The precinct seems to remain still until the paramedics arrive and take her away.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“We collected three different sources of blood on Ms. Whitly.” Edrisa remarks, though slowly, her eyes on Malcolm the entire time. She’s worried about him being there, they all are. His insistence was to stay. With Jessica in surgery, it would be a few hours before she was released. “Her own, obviously being the first. But the spots on her face and blouse were of our fourth and fifth victims, Tommy Moore and Andrew Rankin. She was likely sitting in front of them when…”
“What about the knife?” Dani asks, she’s biting the inside of her cheek, almost regretting having to ask the question. Malcolm shifts, Gil knows all too well the scene flashing through his memory.
“The blood on the knife was Ms. Whitly’s. With the help of Dr. Garcia, who is the trauma surgeon who I met in the hospital, we determined a loose thread of events.” She looks to Gil and he nods for her to continue. “We are aware of the wreck, Ms. Whitly was showing signs of a concussion upon arrival at the station and in the hospital when she briefly regained consciousness before being sedated. She likely hit her head off the window during the wreck. This is conducive with the bruising and dried blood on her right temple.” Edrisa turns back to the board she was using to present her information swallowing.
It wasn’t often that she presented the injuries of a victim who survived but after the events of today he’s exercising caution. He makes a brief note to check on her and maybe buy her lunch for her work. He knows none of this is easy but Edrisa is close to Malcolm. She understands him in a way that doesn’t quite make sense to the rest of them. She deserves to know that she’s appreciated.
“Then there’s the gunshot wound. It was likely received two days ago but opened up again when she escaped.” Gil bites the inside of his cheek thinking privately to himself. She’s lucky she didn’t bleed out. The old stab would on his own abdomen aches with the sympathy of that pain. One he wishes she never knew. “Next we have some yellowed bruising across her cheekbone and under her left eye. It suggests that she was hit. With the scrape on her cheek I would assume the perpetrator wore a ring when doing so.” She checks her notes again adjusting the glasses that slid down the bridge of her nose. “The large bruise on her forehead suggests that she hit her attacker. With her wrists and legs bound I would assume she headbutt him.”
Malcolm’s laugh catches them all by surprise. He shouldn’t get as much glee out of the moment as he does; but imagining prim and proper Jessica Whitly slamming her head against her captor is more satisfying than anything. “Sorry.” He mutters muffling a further laugh with his palm.
Edrisa relaxes slightly at that. “Finally we have the wound in her leg. She was stabbed, obviously. But the wound pattern along with some small cuts on her wrist suggest that she pulled it out herself.”
“She saw her opportunity. Her captor left the knife and she cut the ties around her wrists and ankles to escape.” Malcolm nods in agreement with Edrisa’s assessment.
“Holy shit.” JT mutters. “How the hell did she get back here without anyone taking her to the hospital or calling the cops?”
“That we won’t know. The doctors have my mother under sedation, for now. She’s undergoing her second surgery now, she’s severely dehydrated, and was delirious when she woke up in the hospital.”
“Shouldn’t you be with Ainsley?” Dani asks slowly. “Your mom needs you.”
“My mother needs me to find who did this to her before he strikes again.” Malcolm snaps. Dani grits her teeth but nods.
“What about the guy Ms. Whitly was talking about before she lost consciousness?” JT shifts, eyes combing over the file in front of him. “Do we have any idea who it could be?”
“We can only assume it is another missing person. Until she’s coherent enough to talk to us, we won’t know for certainty. Until we find the guys we are looking for I want detail on all of the Whitly’s until further notice. With her reaction earlier we can only assume that Malcolm and Ainsley were the next targets if Jess didn’t participate in what the killers wanted.” He turns to Edrisa, “Thank you Dr. Tanaka. Keep us updated if Dr. Garcia contacts you with any more information.”
“Yes sir.”
“Colette and her team are canvassing the area now. She couldn’t have made it far without being noticed by a concerned stranger. Dani, I want you and JT looking through missing persons. See if there’s any new disappearances that could be our missing man.”
“What do you want me to do?” Malcolm sits up straight, alert.
“We’re going back to the hospital.” He holds up his hand when Malcolm stammers to protest. “Ainsley needs you right now, more than anything. Not to mention once your mother wakes up she’ll need a face she can trust. Something scared her into coming here with a knife. I have a bad feeling.” Malcolm nods in agreement, though he still doesn’t look too pleased with the information.
He can’t shake the feeling in his gut that they’re missing some key information. He only hopes that Jessica will wake and tell them before it is too late.

Annon-Guy: Lambda - "Hello. Coffee ☕?" Good question. 😉 In regards to that, how do you think the 14 Symphonia Characters take their coffee. P.S. I found this out, but officially Regal hates coffee. Regal states that coffee tastes like muddy water.
In some cases I’m gonna give 2 answers, the first for a general coffee order and the second for a more customized order akin to a Starbucks Order. Lloyd - Cream and 2 sugars, the “normie coffee.” Starbucks order is just a latte. 50/50 whether he’ll get a hot or iced coffee. ;D Colette - Blonder than she is with cream and loaded with sugar. Starbucks order is probably a frappuccino with extra pumps of caramel and mocha and SO SO MUCH WHIPPED CREAM. She will also order 10 Puppaccinnos (the tiniest cups with whipped cream) and hand them out to all the doggies she sees. Genis - Drinks coffee to feel grown-up even though his sister says it stunts his growth. Orders anything new and changes his order all the time. Will have whatever Presea is having if she’s with him. Raine - There was a clip going around about “How people on Tiktok say they take their coffee.” And it’s like Instant coffee and espresso powder and espresso shots and it’s made with coffee instead of water and it’s got ground coffee beans on top and it’s just a heart attack waiting to happen. That’s what Raine drinks. She has two kinds. “Study juice” which is just that, as it is, just coffee on coffee on coffee. Then she has “Bullshit juice” which is the same shit but full of Irish Cream (basically whiskey and cream). And she’s been desperately trying to figure out how to make them into gels so she can carry them as an item instead of in a flask. I have no proof she does this, but this is the vibe I get from her 100%. When she orders at Starbucks, she tells them to surprise her and her only request is 10 or more shots of espresso. Sheena - Less cream than Lloyd takes but more sugar. Starbucks order involves an extra shot of espresso, a pump of caramel, and possibly a seasonal flavor shot like peppermint or pumpkin spice. Probably prefers tea but only the kind she drank in her village growing up. “Nothing compares to the tea back home. Matcha doesn’t even come close.”
Zelos - Literally gets whatever the cute barista lady would recommend just to chat her up. Only drinks hot coffee. If he has to order from a man his preferred order is light cream, honey (not sugar), and nutmeg.  Regal - If he doesn’t like coffee his order is obviously “No thanks.” or tea. But if he HAD to have coffee, he’d probably give Colette a run for her money. He’d basically order a bowl of sugar with a shot of coffee. Catch Regal ordering mocha syrup in hot milk with sugar so it LOOKS like a coffee but isn’t actually a coffee. Presea - If she can’t have it with a triple berry scone, she doesn’t want coffee. She takes it straight black and no sugar because she uses it to add flavor to the scone. Don’t @ me. It’s not canon but I know I’m right. Will accept black coffee with a seasonal flavor shot but won’t be happy about it. Only likes hot coffee, only drinks it in the morning. If it’s afternoon, she’s not drinking it. Kratos - Probably also prefers tea but basically likes his coffee the same as Lloyds with one exception. He likes his extra blond. Cream up in that bitch. More cream than coffee. If the coffee is even SLIGHTLY acidic he hates it. Will 100% order Colette’s coffee order too.  Emil - I waffled on this. I ALWAYS feel like Emil likes sweets, but canon actually pushes that he likes salty, meaty things. His favorite food is fried chicken according to Crestoria, I think? Or was it Rays? Either way, a mobile game says he likes fried chicken, and in DotNW he complains that Colette only cooks with fruits and doesn’t make something “more substantial like a steak.” So if Emil likes coffee, all evidence points to him liking it either black with no sugar or with just cream. 100% would rather make redeye gravy with his coffee than drink it straight. Marta - Sugarbomb seasonals. Will get whatever flavor shot is in season before anything else, weak or decaf coffee, lots of sugar or caramel syrup, whipped cream, hot coffee in cold months, iced coffee in warm months. If there’s no added flavor shot, she feels like the coffee is boring. Is 100% the person who orders with a pastry and dunks it in her coffee.
Alice - Blacker than she says her heart is and with ungodly levels of sugar. Carries packets of jam or spices to add her own flavor shots because she likes them but there's no way in hell she’s going to order the Mocha frou frou double dunk chip whip at the Starbucks from some barista that she can 100% feel is judging her. Sometimes makes Decus order for her to get the flavor shots without the shame. Iced coffee in all weather. Decus - Independently of Alice, he ALSO likes black coffee with flavor shots and sugar but considerably less sugar than Alice. Is 100% the dude in that one meme who orders black coffee with a blueberry flavor shot and nothing else. Richter - Probably prefers tea, specifically herbal tea, but when he has coffee, he has it the way Aster always made it: Double espresso with mocha and whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg. Will take sugar if he’s drinking the coffee by itself, will refuse sugar if he’s eating it with a donut (Aster always ate a donut with his coffee and Richter sometimes doesn’t have the heart to order a donut.) Prefers the coffee hot.
