okay let's break it down. i'm an engineer, so i'm going to come at you from a perspective that may be different than someone else's.
i don't hate ai in every aspect. in theory, there are a lot of instances where, in fact, ai can help us do things a lot better without. here's a few examples:
ai detecting cancer
ai sorting recycling
some practical housekeeping that gemini (google ai) can do
all of the above examples are ways in which ai works with humans to do things in parallel with us. it's not overstepping--it's sorting, using pixels at a micro-level to detect abnormalities that we as humans can not, fixing a list. these are all really small, helpful ways that ai can work with us.
everything else about ai works against us. in general, ai is a huge consumer of natural resources. every prompt that you put into character.ai, chatgpt? this wastes water + energy. it's not free. a machine somewhere in the world has to swallow your prompt, call on a model to feed data into it and process more data, and then has to generate an answer for you all in a relatively short amount of time.
that is crazy expensive. someone is paying for that, and if it isn't you with your own money, it's the strain on the power grid, the water that cools the computers, the A/C that cools the data centers. and you aren't the only person using ai. chatgpt alone gets millions of users every single day, with probably thousands of prompts per second, so multiply your personal consumption by millions, and you can start to see how the picture is becoming overwhelming.
that is energy consumption alone. we haven't even talked about how problematic ai is ethically. there is currently no regulation in the united states about how ai should be developed, deployed, or used.
what does this mean for you?
it means that anything you post online is subject to data mining by an ai model (because why would they need to ask if there's no laws to stop them? wtf does it matter what it means to you to some idiot software engineer in the back room of an office making 3x your salary?). oh, that little fic you posted to wattpad that got a lot of attention? well now it's being used to teach ai how to write. oh, that sketch you made using adobe that you want to sell? adobe didn't tell you that anything you save to the cloud is now subject to being used for their ai models, so now your art is being replicated to generate ai images in photoshop, without crediting you (they have since said they don't do this...but privacy policies were never made to be human-readable, and i can't imagine they are the only company to sneakily try this). oh, your apartment just installed a new system that will use facial recognition to let their residents inside? oh, they didn't train their model with anyone but white people, so now all the black people living in that apartment building can't get into their homes. oh, you want to apply for a new job? the ai model that scans resumes learned from historical data that more men work that role than women (so the model basically thinks men are better than women), so now your resume is getting thrown out because you're a woman.
ai learns from data. and data is flawed. data is human. and as humans, we are racist, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, divided. so the ai models we train will learn from this. ai learns from people's creative works--their personal and artistic property. and now it's scrambling them all up to spit out generated images and written works that no one would ever want to read (because it's no longer a labor of love), and they're using that to make money. they're profiting off of people, and there's no one to stop them. they're also using generated images as marketing tools, to trick idiots on facebook, to make it so hard to be media literate that we have to question every single thing we see because now we don't know what's real and what's not.
the problem with ai is that it's doing more harm than good. and we as a society aren't doing our due diligence to understand the unintended consequences of it all. we aren't angry enough. we're too scared of stifling innovation that we're letting it regulate itself (aka letting companies decide), which has never been a good idea. we see it do one cool thing, and somehow that makes up for all the rest of the bullshit?

Clarification: Generative AI does not equal all AI
💭 "Artificial Intelligence"
AI is machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and more that I'm not smart enough to know. It can be extremely useful in many different fields and technologies. One of my information & emergency management courses described the usage of AI as being a "human centaur". Part human part machine; meaning AI can assist in all the things we already do and supplement our work by doing what we can't.

Can AI technology be used maliciously? Yeh. Thats a matter of developing ethics and working to teach people how to see red flags just like people see red flags in already existing technology.
AI isn't evil. Its not the insane sentient shit that wants to kill us in movies. And it is not synonymous with generative AI.
💭 Generative AI
Generative AI does use these technologies, but it uses them unethically. Its scraps data from all art, all writing, all videos, all games, all audio anything it's developers give it access to WITHOUT PERMISSION, which is basically free reign over the internet. Sometimes with certain restrictions, often generative AI engineers—who CAN choose to exclude things—may exclude extremist sites or explicit materials usually using black lists.
AI can create images of real individuals without permission, including revenge porn. Create music using someones voice without their permission and then sell that music. It can spread disinformation faster than it can be fact checked, and create false evidence that our court systems are not ready to handle.
AI bros eat it up without question: "it makes art more accessible" , "it'll make entertainment production cheaper" , "its the future, evolve!!!"
💭 AI is not similar to human thinking
When faced with the argument "a human didn't make it" the come back is "AI learns based on already existing information, which is exactly what humans do when producing art! We ALSO learn from others and see thousands of other artworks"
Lets make something clear: generative AI isn't making anything original. It is true that human beings process all the information we come across. We observe that information, learn from it, process it then ADD our own understanding of the world, our unique lived experiences. Through that information collection, understanding, and our own personalities we then create new original things.
💭 Generative AI doesn't create things: it mimics things
Take an analogy:
Consider an infant unable to talk but old enough to engage with their caregivers, some point in between 6-8 months old.
Mom: a bird flaps its wings to fly!!! *makes a flapping motion with arm and hands*
Infant: *giggles and makes a flapping motion with arms and hands*
The infant does not understand what a bird is, what wings are, or the concept of flight. But she still fully mimicked the flapping of the hands and arms because her mother did it first to show her. She doesn't cognitively understand what on earth any of it means, but she was still able to do it.
In the same way, generative AI is the infant that copies what humans have done— mimicry. Without understanding anything about the works it has stolen.
Its not original, it doesn't have a world view, it doesn't understand emotions that go into the different work it is stealing, it's creations have no meaning, it doesn't have any motivation to create things it only does so because it was told to.

Mythbusting Generative AI: The Ethical ChatGPT Is Out There
I've been hyperfixating learning a lot about Generative AI recently and here's what I've found - genAI doesn’t just apply to chatGPT or other large language models.
Small Language Models (specialised and more efficient versions of the large models)
are also generative
can perform in a similar way to large models for many writing and reasoning tasks
are community-trained on ethical data
and can run on your laptop.

"But isn't analytical AI good and generative AI bad?"
Fact: Generative AI creates stuff and is also used for analysis
In the past, before recent generative AI developments, most analytical AI relied on traditional machine learning models. But now the two are becoming more intertwined. Gen AI is being used to perform analytical tasks – they are no longer two distinct, separate categories. The models are being used synergistically.
For example, Oxford University in the UK is partnering with open.ai to use generative AI (ChatGPT-Edu) to support analytical work in areas like health research and climate change.

"But Generative AI stole fanfic. That makes any use of it inherently wrong."
Fact: there are Generative AI models developed on ethical data sets
Yes, many large language models scraped sites like AO3 without consent, incorporating these into their datasets to train on. That’s not okay.
But there are Small Language Models (compact, less powerful versions of LLMs) being developed which are built on transparent, opt-in, community-curated data sets – and that can still perform generative AI functions in the same way that the LLMS do (just not as powerfully). You can even build one yourself.

No it's actually really cool! Some real-life examples:
Dolly (Databricks): Trained on open, crowd-sourced instructions
RedPajama (Together.ai): Focused on creative-commons licensed and public domain data
There's a ton more examples here.
(A word of warning: there are some SLMs like Microsoft’s Phi-3 that have likely been trained on some of the datasets hosted on the platform huggingface (which include scraped web content like from AO3), and these big companies are being deliberately sketchy about where their datasets came from - so the key is to check the data set. All SLMs should be transparent about what datasets they’re using).
"But AI harms the environment, so any use is unethical."
Fact: There are small language models that don't use massive centralised data centres.
SLMs run on less energy, don’t require cloud servers or data centres, and can be used on laptops, phones, Raspberry Pi’s (basically running AI locally on your own device instead of relying on remote data centres)

Let's recap
Generative AI doesn't just include the big tools like chatGPT - it includes the Small Language Models that you can run ethically and locally

It means everything – and nothing
Everything – in the sense that it might remove some of the barriers and concerns people have which makes them reluctant to use AI. This may lead to more people using it - which will raise more questions on how to use it well.
It also means that nothing's changed – because even these ethical Small Language Models should be used in the same way as the other AI tools - ethically, transparently and responsibly.
So now what? Now, more than ever, we need to be having an open, respectful and curious discussion on how to use AI well in writing.
In the area of creative writing, it has the potential to be an awesome and insightful tool - a psychological mirror to analyse yourself through your stories, a narrative experimentation device (e.g. in the form of RPGs), to identify themes or emotional patterns in your fics and brainstorming when you get stuck -
but it also has capacity for great darkness too. It can steal your voice (and the voice of others), damage fandom community spirit, foster tech dependency and shortcut the whole creative process.

Just to add my two pence at the end - I don't think it has to be so all-or-nothing. AI shouldn't replace elements we love about fandom community; rather it can help fill the gaps and pick up the slack when people aren't available, or to help writers who, for whatever reason, struggle or don't have access to fan communities.
People who use AI as a tool are also part of fandom community. Let's keep talking about how to use AI well.

"But there is a yawning gap between "AI tools can be handy for some things" and the kinds of stories AI companies are telling (and the media is uncritically reprinting). And when it comes to the massively harmful ways in which large language models (LLMs) are being developed and trained, the feeble argument that "well, they can sometimes be handy..." doesn't offer much of a justification.

When I boil it down, I find my feelings about AI are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: they do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can't do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial. And while I do think that AI tools are more broadly useful than blockchains, they also come with similarly monstrous costs.

But I find one common thread among the things AI tools are particularly suited to doing: do we even want to be doing these things? If all you want out of a meeting is the AI-generated summary, maybe that meeting could've been an email. If you're using AI to write your emails, and your recipient is using AI to read them, could you maybe cut out the whole thing entirely? If mediocre, auto-generated reports are passing muster, is anyone actually reading them? Or is it just middle-management busywork?

Costs and benefits
Throughout all this exploration and experimentation I've felt a lingering guilt, and a question: is this even worth it? And is it ethical for me to be using these tools, even just to learn more about them in hopes of later criticizing them more effectively?
The costs of these AI models are huge, and not just in terms of the billions of dollars of VC funds they're burning through at incredible speed. These models are well known to require far more computing power (and thus electricity and water) than a traditional web search or spellcheck. Although AI company datacenters are not intentionally wasting electricity in the same way that bitcoin miners perform millions of useless computations, I'm also not sure that generating a picture of a person with twelve fingers on each hand or text that reads as though written by an endlessly smiling children's television star who's being held hostage is altogether that much more useful than a bitcoin.
There's a huge human cost as well. Artificial intelligence relies heavily upon "ghost labor": work that appears to be performed by a computer, but is actually delegated to often terribly underpaid contractors, working in horrible conditions, with few labor protections and no benefits. There is a huge amount of work that goes into compiling and labeling data to feed into these models, and each new model depends on ever-greater amounts of said data — training data which is well known to be scraped from just about any possible source, regardless of copyright or consent. And some of these workers suffer serious psychological harm as a result of exposure to deeply traumatizing material in the course of sanitizing datasets or training models to perform content moderation tasks.
Then there's the question of opportunity cost to those who are increasingly being edged out of jobs by LLMs,i despite the fact that AI often can't capably perform the work they were doing. Should I really be using AI tools to proofread my newsletters when I could otherwise pay a real person to do that proofreading? Even if I never intended to hire such a person?
Or, more accurately, by managers and executives who believe the marketing hype out of AI companies that proclaim that their tools can replace workers, without seeming to understand at all what those workers do.
Finally, there's the issue of how these tools are being used, and the lack of effort from their creators to limit their abuse. We're seeing them used to generate disinformation via increasingly convincing deepfaked images, audio, or video, and the reckless use of them by previously reputable news outlets and others who publish unedited AI content is also contributing to misinformation. Even where AI isn't being directly used, it's degrading trust so badly that people have to question whether the content they're seeing is generated, or whether the "person" they're interacting with online might just be ChatGPT. Generative AI is being used to harass and sexually abuse. Other AI models are enabling increased surveillance in the workplace and for "security" purposes — where their well-known biases are worsening discrimination by police who are wooed by promises of "predictive policing". The list goes on.

Meta AI will respond to a post in a group if someone explicitly tags it or if someone “asks a question in a post and no one responds within an hour.” [...] Meta AI has also been integrated into search features on Facebook and Instagram, and users cannot turn it off. As a researcher who studies both online communities and AI ethics, I find the idea of uninvited chatbots answering questions in Facebook groups to be dystopian for a number of reasons, starting with the fact that online communities are for people. ... [The] “real people” aspect of online communities continues to be critical today. Imagine why you might pose a question to a Facebook group rather than a search engine: because you want an answer from someone with real, lived experience or you want the human response that your question might elicit – sympathy, outrage, commiseration – or both. Decades of research suggests that the human component of online communities is what makes them so valuable for both information-seeking and social support. For example, fathers who might otherwise feel uncomfortable asking for parenting advice have found a haven in private online spaces just for dads. LGBTQ+ youth often join online communities to safely find critical resources while reducing feelings of isolation. Mental health support forums provide young people with belonging and validation in addition to advice and social support. In addition to similar findings in my own lab related to LGBTQ+ participants in online communities, as well as Black Twitter, two more recent studies, not yet peer-reviewed, have emphasized the importance of the human aspects of information-seeking in online communities. One, led by PhD student Blakeley Payne, focuses on fat people’s experiences online. Many of our participants found a lifeline in access to an audience and community with similar experiences as they sought and shared information about topics such as navigating hostile healthcare systems, finding clothing and dealing with cultural biases and stereotypes. Another, led by Ph.D student Faye Kollig, found that people who share content online about their chronic illnesses are motivated by the sense of community that comes with shared experiences, as well as the humanizing aspects of connecting with others to both seek and provide support and information. ... This isn’t to suggest that chatbots aren’t useful for anything – they may even be quite useful in some online communities, in some contexts. The problem is that in the midst of the current generative AI rush, there is a tendency to think that chatbots can and should do everything. ... Responsible AI development and deployment means not only auditing for issues such as bias and misinformation, but also taking the time to understand in which contexts AI is appropriate and desirable for the humans who will be interacting with them. Right now, many companies are wielding generative AI as a hammer, and as a result, everything looks like a nail. Many contexts, such as online support communities, are best left to humans.

it doesn’t matter wether AI art is real art or not. “what is art?” is a question that has been answered a million times in as many different ways. it’s a theoretical question that we do not need to answer in order to understand AI generated images and the place of AI in art today.
AI image generators are trained on data skimmed from the internet. this includes images that are not in the public domain. artists and individuals do not have the ability to opt out of this selection. they are not warned, asked for permission, or able to give or take back consent.
there is no transparency in the dataset on which AI image generators are trained. no way for users to know wether or not the prompt they give results in an image based on work from people who did not consent. not even AI developers have access to that information. there is no way to remove specific datapoints from an AI’s training either, so creators cannot even retroactively have their content removed from algorithms.
this is what matters. not the ethereal nature of art, but the fact that real life artists are having their work stolen without the option to give or to revoke consent.
I don’t care if AI art is real art and also don’t care if you do have a strong opinion on the matter. none of this is relevant. if AI art is not real art it is exploitative of content creators and artists. if AI art is real art it is still exploitative of content creators and artists. it is still immoral and of dubious legality, still harmful, still disrespectful.
AI art creators: you would have nothing without the millions of images the tool you are using was trained on. do you want to spit in the face of all of those who made your creations possible? if so, go fuck yourself. if you do care about artists then stop using AI image generators. stop using them until there is full transparency in datasets, until people have a choice to consent or not to their work being used. AI could be ethical, but now, it isn’t, not a single one of them is. the entire industry is built on foundations of theft and exploitation.
ceasing to post AI images isn’t enough. stop giving silicone valley AI startups web traffic. stop showing them you like their product. stop using the AI, stop helping it progress, stop feeding it prompts.
AI art may be art. it may not be. there is no wrong answer and it doesn’t fucking matter. stop exploiting artists, stop facilitating the exploitation of artists, stop stealing from creators. stop thinking of art as a nebulous and detached thing, stop thinking of images online as free of context. I am begging you to start caring about artists.

Hey, I just wanna say that, as a disabled person who at first vehemently disagreed with you, reading your pinned post really helped me understand your perspective and I can't, in good faith, say that I entirely disagree with you. AI art could be a very good creative resource for people, and I also disagree with a lot of art snobbery surrounding 'real Art' anyway. BUT if AI art programs were trained on datasets comprised of only the art of consenting artists, I don't think this would be as big of a debate. The only thing I have an issue with is you blaming the proliferation of data scraping on 'bad actors' when it feels like, at the moment, that 'bad actors' are intrinsically tied to what AI art is, and that those "bad actors" are controlling the entirety of neural network learning. Imo as of right now AI art is just data theft and if/when we reach the point where that isn't the case the conversation that you're trying to have can be expanded upon, but until then I don't see the majority of artists agreeing that copyright theft is a valid way to help the disabled community. And I personally disagree with stealing other people's art to further my own creative abilities.
First of all, thank you very much for being polite and presenting your thoughts in good faith.
I understand where you're coming from; the AI industry as a whole is deeply fraught with ethical issues. However, I don't think that art theft is one of them. You see, digital art only exists as abstract data. This means it could only be "owned" as intellectual property under copyright law. Intellectual property is purely a legal construct; it was invented for the purpose of incentivizing innovation, rather than to uphold the philosophical principles of ownership. I find that it makes very little sense that people should be able to own ideas—after all, it's seemingly human nature to adopt others' ideas into our own viewpoints, and to spread our ideas to others. In fact, there is an entire field of study, called memetics, dedicated to this phenomenon. So, I don't think that data scrapers are guilty of art theft. There is, however, an argument to be made that they are guilty of plagiarism. Scraped AI training databases generally do not credit the original authors of their contents, though they do disclose that the contents are scraped from the internet, so they aren't exactly being passed off as the curators' own work. Make of that what you will—I'm not really sure where I stand on the matter, other than that I find it questionable at best. Either way, though, I believe that training an AI makes transformative use of the training data. In other words, I don't think that training an AI can qualify as plagiarism, even though compiling its training dataset can. Rather than art theft or plagiarism, I think the biggest ethical problem with the AI industry's practices is their handling of data. As I mentioned in my pinned post, the low standard of accountability is putting the security of personal and sensitive information at risk.
Feel free to disagree with me on this. I acknowledge that my stances on IP certainly aren't universal, and I know that some people might not be as concerned about privacy as I am, but I hope my reasoning at least makes sense. One last thing: a lot of AI development is funded by investments and grants, so refusing to use AI may not be very impactful in terms of incentivizing better ethics, especially considering that ethics-indifferent businesses can be a fairly reliable source of revenue for them. That's why I think seeking regulation is the best course of action, but again, feel free to disagree. If you aren't comfortable with the idea of supporting the industry by using its products, that's perfectly valid.

Need to rant because this post ignited something beastly inside me :P

As a philosophy major, seeing that ad actually drove me fucking nuts, because I know a lot of people in my school's humanities department (as well as some in the Philosophy course itself) would actually use it.
In my city Philosophy is already considered something of a dying humanities major as it doesn't hold as much attractive options as, say, Communications, Psychology, or Political Science—so barely anyone even takes it seriously anymore. In fact, my university came so goddamn close to shutting down the Philo course entirely.
Our department's barely holding it together, and seeing other humanities majors actively thriving despite taking advantage of something like this is such a huge slap to the face.
We have maybe 15–20 students left in the entire programme, and most of them didn't even choose Philo out of genuine interest—they either just got redirected here, or decided on it as a last-minute resort. It's become such a fucking joke what with how people began seeing it as a dumping ground for has-beens and do-no-betters. It's treated as the goddamn lobby for rejects and undecideds; or worse yet, some will stay for a month to a year, only to dip out at the end when they realise how unaligned they actually are with the course. Bitch; if you wanted an easy way out, why are you here?
There's only one constant professor teaching every subject across every year level. And I say the word constant loosely—because while he technically holds the position, he's also our adviser, a.k.a. our last line of defense anytime the department's on the chopping block. The catch? He's part-time. That man is barely hanging on himself, with multiple teaching gigs at other universities; which means we only get scraps of his time, and even then, he's already usually burnt out. He's not just underpaid. The man's old, overextended, and chronically tired. The worst part? He's good. He's actually a damn good philosopher and an even better teacher. If we lose him, it's fucking over. An algorithm isn't going to help you or your professor. You're silencing the very people who've helped you develop your critical thinking skills.
The people here tend to have this preconceived notion that Philosophy is something of a 'high-brow art'—hence the lack of engagement. This is utter bullshit, by the way, because that's just double-edged classism. The whole point of it is critical access to thought—not intellectual gatekeeping. Call me petty and salty for this but this is one of the reasons why I hate it when bitches say shit like 'I'm too small-brained for this'—like, no. You're not. The fact that you're even recognising your own limitations is already a huge move in itself. You just need to put in the goddamn effort.
There's zero funding for conferences or outreach unless we tie ourselves to other, more 'useful' disciplines (our dean does what she can, but God, it's nowhere near enough; and I know damn well what our department is capable of given how much favouritism Psych and PolSci gets).
As the VP of our org, it's humiliating to have to cosplay as other departments just to get a foot in the door. And the worst part is: admin eats this shit up. They love to say things like relevance and fucking real-world application while simultaneously gutting any space we might’ve had to show how philosophy is deeply relevant, precisely because it questions the frameworks everyone else takes for granted.
Don't even get me started on AI. Half the 'cutting-edge' discourse around machine ethics, bias, decision-making, sentience, consciousness, language—all of it—is stolen straight out of philosophy. Hell, some of these LLMs are trained on archives of our papers and books. But none of y'all are hiring philosophers. No one's inviting us to panels unless we're there to play the silly widdle ethics people and make everything sound profound for five minutes before the principal takes back the mic. We're useful enough to train the machine. We're relevant enough to pad your datasets. But God motherfucking forbid you actually pay a specialist to teach or contextualise those ideas.
I felt worse rereading all the points I made considering my dad just piped in and essentially confirmed what I already knew. The bastard saw me typing and fucking laughed, saying it's just not profitable anymore. At one point in history Philosophy was regarded as the greatest of all sciences. Then religion commodified it, and soon after that technology virtually killed it. Who needs it when the people most rewarded for thinking are the ones who do it loudest, fastest, and with just enough fake nuance to sound profound in under sixty seconds?
Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, fuck AI.
I've been begging my professor to change our output formats for these very reasons. I told him to give all of these fucking essays a break because theoretical knowledge isn't going to solve everything. Nobody gives a shit about deep dive papers on Kant when they can't even pay their rent, much less have the energy for critical theory after working a shift at some minimum-wage job.
I suppose the biggest issue about Philosophy is that it isn't as 'practical' as other subjects are. The main problem with its presence in the modern world is that it's mostly just those writing about things that won't pay the bills, won't solve the climate crisis, and sure as hell won't put food on the table. We're not necessarily equipping ourselves to survive in the world as it is right now.
But neither are we reaching anyone like this, nor are we making any true progress no matter how wonderfully the concept of AI services is presented. We are actually losing relevance in real time. We're sitting on centuries of intellectual legacy and presenting it like goddamn expired toast. Philosophy was revered for its ability to interrogate meaning and question the frameworks that govern society. And now philosophers are being asked to hand its intellectual power over to algorithms and systems that don't even feel.
People forget that that's the real kicker: companies want philosophy specialists to 'work with' AI, but what in the giggling goddamn fuck does that even mean?
Some of y'all say we're supposed to fix AI with the same academia we've spent years honing. But instead of doing the deep, reflective work philosophy was built on, we're now just handing over centuries of intellectual labour, programming our thoughts into a machine, and hoping this utter parasite of a system works. Yes, artificial intelligence may have its benefits—but that doesn't take away the fact that you're letting automatons belittle all the history and all the hard work that built the foundations of human understanding.
Stop pretending like AI can actually solve problems. They don't. They can't. They can get as humanlike as they can, they can mimic our speech and our processes to sharper degrees, but at the end of the day they're soulless machines. They don't have the same capabilities you or I do. Stop it. Just stop.

I can’t believe we already started the second part of this trimester! I want to say thank you for your feedback from last week. I feel a bit embarrassed that I didn’t answer the question about fonts. We learned this topic before, but I forgot the English name and got confused.
This week, we didn’t have class on Monday, but we covered everything on Friday. Even though the class was fast, I understood everything. I didn’t turn on my camera because I wasn’t feeling well, but I still enjoyed listening.
The first topic was about the logos of CNN, BBC, and The New York Times. I saw these logos before in different styles, but I never thought about why they look different. Now I understand that some of them were just old versions.
Then we talked about AI in the media. First I want to talk about Duolingo. I was shocked they removed Duo! I used this app when I was a child, but I stopped 2-3 years ago. After the rebranding, I wanted to try it again. So, I think it was a smart way to get attention.
Now about the lesson questions. You asked who is responsible if a journalist uses AI and something goes wrong with facts or ethics?
In my opinion, the journalist is responsible. AI is a tool, a helper but it doesn’t do our job for us. We must check everything and fix mistakes. AI gives us drafts, but the final work is our job. AI is not always correct. It helps, but it’s not enough.
And what about ethics? That’s a hard question. Ethics are always changing. Something we could say yesterday maybe we can’t say today. People can feel these changes. But AI can’t. Developers try to teach AI to follow rules, but sometimes it just avoids hard questions. A person can give a better answer and follow ethics. We have critical thinking and empathy, AI doesn’t. So if a journalist uses AI, they must say it in their article. It’s honest and responsible.
About the cases from class, I want to talk about The Guardian. They published an article written by AI. Some people didn’t even notice it was not written by a human. But I think it only works for simple topics. If it’s something serious, AI is not good enough.
And finally, about AI replacing journalists. This is a scary question for many people, not only in media. Yes, some jobs may be replaced by AI. But human intelligence is always more powerful. AI was created by people. Only humans can invent and create truly new things. AI knows only what people put in it. That’s why, for news and media, we still need people.
Only a human can really connect with another human. AI can help, but it’s not the same. So I don’t worry about using AI for ideas or editing, it’s helpful. But if someone is afraid of AI, maybe they are not doing real work, just copy-paste :)
