My thoughts about Wriothesley

Literally my thoughts about him, and his personality when I play the game.

He had a wonderful childhood, before he knew the truth. He thought he was the lucky child in the world, had been adopted and lived happily with silbling.

Based on his personality when we get close to him (and his sense of humor), I think he used to be a talkative child. Not the energetic one but the one who has a positive, extrovert vibe. I can image Wriothesley, in the past, giving newcomers a sweet and encouraging smile while walking them around the house.

So well-behaved *sob*

His smile used to be so pure and sweet, kind. I think in a normal life, Wriothesley could be a kind entrepreneur or a nice, helpful officer. He is easy-going and willing to help others.

So when he knew the truth, it devasted him. Imagine your dear parents, your saviors, your most loved ones, you used to swear that you would protect them when you grow up, but actually use you like livestock. He would feel like a clown. He was furious from the betrayal. I’m sure it ruins every memory, warm feeling of him about childhood. I can imagine how struggling he was (or is) to endure the thought that his dear memory was nothing but fake.

Think about a lively teenager who suddenly lost everything. He couldn’t rely on anybody or anything. He must be angry so much. Why now? Why did they lie? Why they were careless to let him know the truth? Why?

I think Wriothesley, sometimes, just sometimes, wishes that he could die without knowing the truth. So he could remain as a pure boy who had a beautiful childhood.

But nothing can undo, his memory about his childhood now was stained by the dirty truth. He may talk about his past with ease now but it still bothers him.

After all those years, he still healing and comforting his wounds. He avoids touching it or digs deeper into it. He even doesn’t connect with any of his “silblings”, knowing that helping them could hurt him more.

Living in the fortress taught him that everyone has their own story, their own reason, well most of them. So do his “parents”, but he doesn’t want to understand that, he doesn’t want to empathize with them. If he does, who will empathize with him? Who will bring back his pure childhood to him? Who will let him have a life as a “clean profile” citizen? No one. So just let him despite them.

 That’s why he went himself to the criminal house in the teaser. He wants to protect that child’s world so she can live a happy life, unlike him. When that girl gets older, she will understand her father's guilt.

Although Wriothesley is an easy and sassy guy, he will bonk whoever tells children that Santa Clause isn’t real.

Overall, Wriothesley is deeply hurt and he is trying his best to heal that trauma. I know every character in Genshin has an unforgettable past but hyv did really well at Wriothesley’s. I can feel his pain and struggle through every single line. (or maybe because I like him too much ig lmao)

Wriothesley is smart with craft things. If whoever plays Tears of Themis, you will understand what I mean. Wriothesley plays with materials just like Luke. We can bring him a broken clock and he will fix it as if his hobby. Maybe he will even add more functions to that clock lmao. (Something like an alarm when is tea-time).

Wriothesley admits that he has trust issues and most of his friends are not human. I guess they are Melusines. They may be weird a little bit and cannot understand or act like humans, but Wriothesley can trust them since they are not as greedy as humans

As a happy boy he used to be, Wriothesley loves playing =))) He enjoys his daytime with many entertainment. He will delay work till night if it’s not urgent. He is smart enough to be lazy.

One more reason is he wants to sleep faster. If he does the work at night, it will drain his energy. As soon as he flops on the bed, he falls asleep. Better if he is tired enough that he can’t even dream of anything. He doesn’t want to sleep alone in bed, thinking about his life, past life.

The Pact and Wars

I think I've talked about this before (cannot find the post) but the way history is handled is so racist and antisemitic. Wars are not because of their real reasons, but instead conflict. WWII is made to be because Hades, Zeus, Poisiedon, and their kids had another spat, instead of the fascism and racism that really caused it. The Civil War, instead of being about racism, was made to be about a fight between the romans and greeks. The wars we see in series have no connection to real world events, why couldn't the old ones be the same? It also deminshes the accomplishments of real people. For example, Harriet Tubman is said to be a daughter of Hermes. To me, this says a black disabled woman can't do great things without great blood in a world where that exists

Annabeth

Annabeth is a girl boss, and this would be great, if her writer wasn't a cishet man. Being strong is equated to being mean, physically and verbally. When she thinks Rachel likes Percy, a guy she isn't even dating, she gets pissy at them for even hanging out! She constantly demeans Percy and hits people who anger her, including Percy, and this is treated as cute and quirky. And then her trauma is dismissed and diminished by a boy who went through similar treatment. Sorry Percy also was hurt by who his author is, but it makes things worse with Annabeth's portrayal. Also she once says people don't take her seriously because she's blonde. During HoO. With Piper and Hazel right there

The Hunters

The Hunters of Artemis, in mythology, are a group of women and sometimes men who joined Artemis to escape the deeply misogynistic culture at the time, and there are sapphic undertones to much of their myths! In the books, they're portrayed as man hating, romance hating, and functionally aroace. Hippolytus is completely ignored. Zoë is constantly talking down to Percy without giving him a chance and makes probably the dumbest decision by choosing Bianca for the quest in Titan's Course. Jo and Emmie were kicked out for finding love. I'm aroace. I love aroace rep. I'm overly weary of (cis white) men. But the way the Hunters are written is so similar to how angry anti-SJW youtube saw feminists

Nico

Nico is forcibly outed in one book and in the next gets a boyfriend with literally no personality or relationship with him up to that point. The drawbacks of shadow travel so clearly align with disability. He's also obviously depressed and deeply traumatized. Yet Will gives him no medical autonomy, something we disabled folk have to deal with all the time that's really very ableist. I love Nico, but the way he's portrayed just isn't great

Sadie and Carter

Sadie and Carter are biracial and look wildly different. This is good representation from what I've heard, but not how it's different or some incidental stuff. Carter, the boy, has dark skin and dark, coily hair, while Sadie, the girl, has pale skin, striaght blond hair, and pale eyes. This plays into colorism where darker people are seen as more masculine, as does Carver being the host to the god of war. Sadie is also a young girl who's put into a relationship with a god who kinda bullied her at the start. Carver is also in a relationship with a person who was hostile, but she gets better so I'll let is slide

Leo

Leo is latino, and stereotypical at that. Je is constantly flirting with everyone and looked down upon. As a Leo who is not an astronomical Leo, he deserves better especially when you consider c//leo

Piper

"I'm not like other girls" girl who's hailed as absolutely gorgeous. She was born on a rez that didn't exist at the time which just goes to show the lack of research. Her eyes are kaleidoscope, which is a trait none of her siblings, or her mom, have. She's cut off from her culture enough to not know the significance of feathers but has plenty of memories of her grandfather who lived on the rez. Also, she's a cleptomaniac. I love Piper, I like how she's representation for a person who was cut off from her culture and longs to know it despite living with her bio family because I and a few friends are the same, but Piper is still a stereotype. I also feel like the veganism plays into the whole spiritual nature stereotype, but I'm not sure so don't quote me

Frank

The only confirmed greco-roman demigod without dyslexia is also East Asian. I think the stereotyping is obvious it doesn't help that the only two Asian characters before him, Ethan and Drew, were antagonists. He was infantalized while fat and then had a magic glow up for... no reason, really, but that matters less here. Also he's dating a seventh grader as a tenth grader basically and I'm trying to not spoil stuff but the end of the Tyrant's Tomb is bullshit from a lore perspective imo

Hazel

She's a black girl whose parents both had very dark eyes and hair, yet her eyes are gold and her hair is paler than her skin, and both of those last two are described as looking like foods. Again, she is the age of a 7th grader. See Frank. And this may be the fandom's fault, but it seems she's always either infantalized or adultified from what I've seen

Will

All we know about Will Solace in BoO is that he's attracted to men and a medic son of Apollo. I bet you didn't remember he was at the Battle of Manhattan or that he's counselor because all his siblings died. And that's a lot of kids. Also he calls Nico nicknames he doesn't like. Samirah is a hijabi, but we see under her scarf at least once and that feels really disrespectful, especially considering how observant she is of other stuff. Only women or close family (brothers, direct descendants, or direct ancestors) can see a hijabi's hair. Even if Magnus, Hearth, and Blitz are like family that usually isn't enough. She should have gotten a regular valkyrie's cloak imo. Some stuff feels off about Hearth but I'm not D/deaf so I'll hold my tongue on that as I'm not sure. Lavinia could use more yiddishisms in her speech and I'm curious to know what sect she was if her rabbi wasn't cool with her being a lesbian, but they do exist so *shrug.* There's probably something I missed with Reyna and Hylla, I feel like there is, but I can't remeber so it just gets an honorary mention

I just saw your new masterlist (the one with the analysises) and I noticed the whole section about how canon characters would realistically handle romance which I though was funny considering how much fan content revolves around having perfect romances XD I think a lot of people also thought twst was an otome game when it was first being marketed and someone's even working on a twst otome fan game right now. Wondering if you have any thoughts on that?

Before I comment on the concept of TWST as an otome game, I want to preface this post with the disclaimer that, in sharing my thoughts, I do NOT mean to invalidate anyone that enjoys otome games, anyone that likes the idea of TWST as an otome game, or anyone that likes making and/or consuming romantic TWST content.

This response is meant to be a critical analysis of the otome genre and how well or not well it fits with the lore and the characters presented to us in TWST.

As someone who has admittedly played a number of otome games and dating sims in their lifetime, I think TWST would function poorly as one. This ultimately comes down to two major concerns: the story and the characters.

Now, I don’t mean to imply that the writing for all otome games is bad, but it’s certainly difficult to find a well-written one, even in today’s highly saturated market. I think the issue with otomes is that, by virtue of being a genre that focuses on developing an explicitly romantic relationship with a character of your choosing, it limits what the story can do and where the story can end. You can anticipate some bumps here and there, but you also expect the guy to be head-over-heels for you and you expect a happy ending where you kiss and live happily ever after with him by the end of it. There are only so many times you can follow this formula without it getting stale.

There are also a lot of tropes (as well as subversions) commonly associated with otome games, and it is extremely difficult to avoid them or to put a fresh spin on them when writing. This can make routes entirely predictable so long as you know the basic archetype that a certain character falls into. For example, how many celebrity characters have storylines which involve obsessive fans bullying the poor main character out of jealousy, or the paparazzi getting involved and blasting a secret relationship all over the news? I can almost guarantee you that this would also happen if someone like Vil got an otome game route. In fact, I could sit here and rattle off tropes I can expect to be in every TWST boy’s route, simply by virtue of how ingrained some of them are in otome culture. (It’s not even that I’ve played a lot of otome games, but I’ve certainly seen enough to notice the patterns with little to no changes across various titles.)

The other big problem is that otomes tend to focus on the protagonist--on making them feel loved and important. What usually ends up happening in order to achieve this is that all character development for the potential love interests hinges on their involvement and interactions with the protagonist. Not only does it create this unrealistic expectation for romantic love (ie your S/O will come into your life and fix all your problems), but it creates the weirdly codependent implication that you cannot improve or be a better person without romantic love. It also downplays the significance of platonic relationships with family and friends in favor of propping up romance. It’s not uncommon in otome games where literally no one but the main guys and the protagonist get unique artwork, signifying that the only important people are the ones involved in the romance. No one else matters. Sometimes the parents are just written out entirely, or the friends are jealous, or the family and friends exist SOLELY just to push the romance (“when do I get to see you marry”/“wow, why are you still single, do you need my help?”) Nothing else matters but figuring out how these faceless blobs can be stepping stones for the route. What would become of companion characters like Grim? He would lose his importance in the story. What about Ortho, who is considered too young to date? He’d be made nothing more than a wingman for Idia.

Speaking of the characters, it’s not just the side characters and NPCs that would be watered down; I feel that the TWST boys themselves would also be done a disservice. Since the nature of otome games is to endear you to a character and have them fall in love with the player/protagonist by the end, it would force a lot of the boys (most notably the “nastier” ones) to forego their wrongdoings by the end to shower the player/protagonist with love. Like... you can’t really write the TWST boys being assholes the entire time through because it would harm the player’s enjoyment of the story even if it would be true to the boy’s character. For example, let’s look at Ace. He is the only boy to have canonically been romantically involved with someone. He ghosted his ex-girlfriend. It’s possible he may do the same again--but even if that’s something Ace could very well do, a TWST otome game would probably avoid it altogether because being ghosted in a game doesn’t make the player feel good. In TWST as it is now, the characters are allowed to freely be assholes because their personalities aren’t constrained to being nice to the protagonist all the time or by the end of a chapter. The boys still maintain a lot of their rough edges in spite of gaining some new epiphany, and other boys won’t have changed at all. But in an otome, a lot of the less savory aspects of the boys’ personalities would have to be significantly sanded down to entertain the player’s fantasies. Alternatively, those unsavory aspects could still be included, but it’s more likely that they would be written in such a way that they would be completely gone or not even an issue by the end of a route, OR they would be written such that the nastiness is ONLY directed at anyone that ISN’T their love interest. It’s just kind of odd, and it hampers the boys’ characters, as well as limits how they are able to change throughout their routes.

I believe that character development that relies on being in love with the protagonist fundamentally clashes with what TWST is. In Twisted Wonderland, characters don’t grow only because of Yuu, they grow because of the intervention of many other characters, as well as them coming to realize the faults of their own actions, learning to take responsibility, and making a conscious, active decision to better themselves. What’s more, characters take ample time to recover and learn from their errors, and even 6 episodes into the main story, we still don’t have concise or clear conclusions to anyone’s character arcs--because the characters are continuously changing, and there technically is no end to their development. They help each other out. They feel organic, they feel real--but it wouldn’t hold true for an otome game.

As an example, in episode 1, it was Ace and Deuce that challenged Riddle to a duel because they couldn’t stand his tyranny, then it was Ace that decked Riddle and called him out, and Trey who negated Riddle’s magic with his own when the dorm leader was on a rampage. Riddle eventually realizes that he was being unreasonable and breaks down post-OB, confessing to all the normal things he wants to do instead of so strictly following the rules. Yuu didn’t do much of anything. Even late in the main story, characters are helping each other develop, and some scenes exclude Yuu entirely. Deuce got his unique magic after a compelling conversation with Epel on the beach--and Yuu wasn’t even there to overhear that talk. In episode 6, Riddle-Azul and Leona-Jamil had major moments of growth through their clashing characters AFTER they had split up from MC and Pomefiore.

If TWST were an otome, Overblot battles would be resolved with the power of the protagonist hugging the boy and confessing their love, or the OB boy snapping back to their senses when he realizes he had hurt his S/O. Deuce’s character development and even his unique magic development would be walled off until the protagonist meets all of the requirements to get to the proper happy ending. The same would go for Azul, Riddle, Leona, Jamil, Vil, Idia, and Malleus’s growth. Other characters would not be given as much spotlight or screen time, because the focus would be squarely on the protagonist and their developing relationship with the boy of their choice. The flexibility of the story would be greatly hindered, inorganically railroading all progression and locking it behind one fact and one factor only: the protagonist’s presence, their love. In an otome, all the growth that a character goes through only happens because they found a S/O.

For characters who have particularly sad backstories, it can be difficult to write their route in such a way as to not come off as... insensitive? There’s really no other way for me to put it. Like... especially for the OB boys, a lot of the issues they have cannot be solved with a smooch and positive affirmation. You cannot just tell Riddle’s mom she’s awful, tell Leona it’s okay that he’ll never be king because at least he’ll always be “king of your heart”, tell Azul that you think his octopus form is cute and he should have more confidence in it, free Jamil from his service to the Asims, tell Vil that he’s fairest of all to you, bring back Ortho for Idia, etc. That will not solve their issues. A lot of these traumas are deep-seated (to the point where it has obviously had a major impact on their current personality), or extend to systems a single person cannot influence, or even society itself. The characters would have to realistically work through their issues over a large span of time, and with the proper therapy and other professional resources. People don’t just change overnight or the instant they get a romantic partner, they need time to process and to heal, sometimes by themselves if necessary. To think that “true love can conquer all” can easily oversimplify very complex issues and can do a great disservice to the characters going through these problems. Sometimes it can feel like the main issue is tossed aside in favor of addressing the more “important” thing: the romance--and that can honestly hurt.

Of course, it’s great to have a positive and loyal support system there to help you! But at the same time, it is NEVER someone’s responsibility to be a therapist for their partner, and nor are they responsible for the wellbeing of their partner. This then circles back to the concerns I expressed earlier about the implications that otome games tend to perpetuate (that a S/O can come in and fix all of the problems).

One last thing I want to make note of is that by nature of “otome” games being directed at “maidens”/females (usually straight and cis females; the word “otome” literally MEANS “maiden”), it... alienates a lot of their potential audience pool. Males, nonbinaries, non-straight people, etc.--none of them would be able to enjoy TWST if it were an otome, because most otome already assign and assume a sexuality and gender before you’ve even booted up the game. They cannot readily identify as the protagonist, and they cannot easily self-insert because of that. It’s not fair, and it’s not as inclusive as the TWST we currently have, know, and love. We also need to consider that a lot of TWST’s current fans aren’t into the game to romance the boys; a lot of people also find value in friendships with them, or being able to relate to them on a platonic level. If TWST were an otome, they would be shoehorned into intimacy they didn’t ask for, and it might make them feel uncomfortable or not able to enjoy the game at all. Otome games appeal to a certain audience, and the opposite also holds true: it repels a different audience, thus dividing the current TWST fanbase.

At the end of the day, otome is often set up for that immediate payoff, that happily ever after, because otome is generally not concerned with telling a deep, complex, or thought-provoking story. Its primary goal is to satisfy and to indulge the player, even if it means sacrificing other things, like character complexity or plot, in order to achieve that. The structure of otome is best for guilty pleasure, wish fulfillment, and escapism, which, again, I don’t think that vibes well with the friendship and character growth driven nature of TWST. TWST is allowed to explore mature themes and it is allowed to have all of its characters be equally as important because it is not restricted by the expectations imposed by the otome genre. There’s definitely still some bones thrown at the players in terms of a few main story and home screen lines, but that’s where the fanservice stops. TWST’s aim isn’t fanservice, it’s telling compelling stories with its wonderful cast of characters.

It would have to take an extremely skillful team of writers to pull off a TWST otome game that avoids all the pitfalls I previously mentioned (if the goal is to preserve the charming characters and their development despite the genre shift). You can’t just copy paste TWST’s current main story plot and add dialogue choices that increase affection with various boys and call it a day; you’d seriously need to reconstruct and rewrite literally everything to make it cohesive.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION(S).  uhhh hmmm lots and lots and lots about dark. he's not actually chaotic evil despite his edgy appearance and anime villain colorscheme; he's chaotic good. he's just as equally silly and approachable as he is sensual, serious, and a diehard romantic. he's subtle and manipulative but he's not trying to manipulate daisuke anymore in any selfish way. dark likes to flirt and is the 'cool' and 'hot' one but he's also so Doomed, you guys, and canonically, actually actively avoids 'true' love bc he knows how doomed he is, leaving him with what i call a 'good host(club host) mentality.'(aka, he wants people to feel good around him with his charisma but he'll pretty much never actually commit.) power of love despite it all is very real to dark even if he personally can't feel anything without daisuke. speaking of daisuke, the simplest misconception is that he's weak or a wimpy coward. he's not and almost always pushes bravely through fear (real courage shines in the dark of terror my friends) and always gives it his all for anything he puts his mind to. also, he's awkward, but once he comfortably warms up to someone, he can be incredibly romantic and loving. dai being clumsy is true in its own way (he's a little scatterbrained most of the time) but that's at odds with the fact he is still quite literally a trained phantom thief, which is easy to forget sometimes. dai's also not a perfect woobie, dark's literally meant to represent his flaws and the sins of his family: daisuke and dark is, in the end, a fallen angel, someone who's supposed to be 'guilty' of sin and likewise a sinner. i can't think of anything else huge off the top of my head but i'm sure there's more.

AN IMPORTANT HEADCANON.  dark is daisuke's dream and daisuke is dark's heart. it's plastered all over my blog and only visually represented within canon, so i regard it as somewhat more of a headcanon than canon might have it. dark embodies daisuke's aspirations, he encourages and inspires daisuke to have something to reach out for and step forwards towards, the sort of 'self' he wants to become, if not absorb traits of self-confidence and 'style' from. dark, as a nonhuman entity, requires daisuke as his human host and heart both to literally live, exist, and to feel anything; he also has a line that canonically states [he] as an artwork, "cannot exist outside of a human's dream." dark and dai should not necessarily ever be physically separated or pit against each other in a contest of favoritism. if you want to fully love dark, you also have to acknowledge daisuke. if you want to fully love daisuke, then you have to acknowledge dark. the way i portray them in their canon verse, they're always at the point where they're basically in positive harmony with each other. i don't really even consider myself a multi just because dark and daisuke are supposed to be that intertwined and reflective of each other; when you cut down to their absolute character cores, how they feel about themselves and their own thematic functions, they truly are the same despite their superficial personality differences.

A USELESS HEADCANON.  daisuke considers a lot of his skills as a phantom thief useless, but his absurd dexterity can come in handy in some other ways. aside from all the fun little magic tricks he knows how to perform, if you show him how things work and then turn around so he doesn't feel pressured and get embarrassed, he can basically perfect full combo any rhythm game for you or hit the jackpot every single time at an arcade in games of skill. dark also has a plethora of talents that he either doesn't care to use, or rarely gets the opportunity to use- for example, in canon he's shown to know how to ballroom dance (very capably, at that,) and so i've let him inherit from his inspiration as the phantom of the opera: he's also capable of playing just about any instrument, has memorized an impressive repertoire of pieces, and has an exquisite singing voice that he sometimes lulls daisuke to sleep with, especially since daisuke is the only one who can actually hear his voice most of the time.

POTENTIAL TRIGGERS.  uhhhhh thematics of loss, death, and grief? crime? theft? the suffocating feeling of being trapped in an inherited cycle or religious trauma in the form of unwilling martyrs and manmade devils? the occasional delve into light-ish psychological horror? lots of stuff happens to dark and daisuke that could be considered triggering, for example getting shot and outright physically injured by magic and literal swords, but dnangel isn't rlly out to hurt anybody rather than teach people how to move on and cope with various forms of loss, loneliness, and separation.

SOMETHING YOU ENJOY ABOUT (WRITING) THEM.  god the contradictions. always. daisuke has one foot in the criminal sphere that's very popular in the tumblr rpc but his magical-girl alignment simultaneously makes him a complete and total fish out of the water. the monster has a heart, the boy is a monster, it's very meta for a chara who's trying to keep a secret and quite literally bears a curse that inevitably isolates him away from any true intimacy. that chaotic good rather than outright chaotic evil throws soooo many people off, it's so funny. dai's somehow a bastard rogue and the most kind-hearted middle schooler ever, and this is something that once the muns have grappled over, their muses have to grapple with too. i think the moral dilemma that dai n dark both present to others (are you going to hurt dark? are you willing to, even knowing he's daisuke? what about not knowing, and only learning after you've hurt him?) alongside the dilemmas that dai n dark have to face themselves (are you going to tell? do you know what you want? do you belong here? can you trust this person) is always entertaining.

SOMETHING YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW BEFORE WRITING WITH THEM. nothing in particular comes to mind rn? you can go through my reference tag if you want to see me ramble about hc stuff for miles, otherwise, the only thing i can think of is that dark and daisuke literally share a single body, and their transformations into one another can be extremely fluid, hence me not separating their interactions or IC tags. it's okay to question and ask yourself who the hell you're actually interacting with because again, dark and daisuke have such a weird relationship of host/possessor + alter ego/alter ego (yet actually are one and the same) going on. for the most part tho, dont worry about it. just act naturally. also yeah dark's wings are real and he actually does have freaky demon teeth and weird eyes. daisuke's just a lil guy but chances are he WILL try to befriend and support you, so like, know what you're getting into with that and all.

1 - his character design it's basic, but i need somewhere to start. i LOVE phils character design, idk, maybe its just something to do with birds and green and me being a cosplayer. especially his new skin! it has details, anon, and they all have meaning. i love me some details with meaning. and bc its minecraft, and because minecraft is pixels, theres SO MUCH ROOM FOR INTERPRETATION. anyone can go COMPLETELY ham with the design if they want to and they all look SO COOL.

2 - EMERALD DUO okay so ill say it outright; im a qpr emduo sorta person. at the very least im an ‘old friends/war buddies/ex emperors emduo’ person. dont get me wrong, techno is the eldest child, but in the dsmp, he’s not phil’s kid, they’re just really old friends. AND OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM. ‘for you the world’ NEED I SAY MORE??? the emeralds, the phil risking his life to protect techno from the butcher army, the techno worrying about phil participating in doomsday, the complete and utter undying trust they have in each other. theyre not perfect, they still disagree and still have differing opinions but they sort it out and compromise and make sure each other is always okay!!! them!!!

3 - birb cphil is a bird we all know this. and this is leaning more into fanon not explicitly canon, but im including it because i can. phil is bird, he has bird brain. bird instincts and bird features, like hollow bones, chirping, nesting, preening, all the good stuff. it adds a layer of depth to his character thats so fun to play with when writing!! there’s so much potential for both angst and fluff and i love it so much. also i just love birds so yknow. win win situation for me.

4 - family, its messy phil is part of what i believe is the biggest canonical family on the dsmp. there’s four generations ffs. he has a son, a grandson, even a great-grandson. and it’s not perfect. wilbur is. wilbur, but even though he went mad and even though he lied in his letters he still cared enough to send letters in the first place, phil still cared enough to read them. phil still cared enough to drop everything for his son. it was messy and it was heartbreaking but that is what it is to be a father, i think. sometimes whats right is whats hardest and its phils love for wilbur that was forever just so clear. its the way fundy fucked up, its the way phil fucked up in return, its the way they made up without properly making up but phil was always, always there for fundy, always cared for him at least a little, because that’s his grandson.

5 - leading on from the above, kristin!! ANON DO YOU KNOW HOW COOL IT IS FOR PHIL TO BE MARRIED TO THE LITERAL GODDESS OF DEATH?? phil is a trophy husband and you cannot convince me otherwise. his wife is SO COOL and SO POWERFUL and he loves her SO VERY MUCH. yeah sure hes a het guy in a homonormative society but i can forgive him for that because his wife is amazing. also less cphil, more ccphil, but i think its SO FUCKING COOL AND/OR FUNNY that ccphil literally just. wrote his wife into the dsmp on a whim. THATS how much he loves her that even tho shes not involved in this thing hes doing she’s still there in some sense.

6 - immortality yeah cphil CAN die, but here’s the catch; he doesn’t. hes functionally immortal and godddd i love it so much. hes so fucked up from it, but i love that about him (more on that point later). cphil has lived through so much and he has known so much and he has gained and lost SO MUCH but he’s still going strong, hes still loving and living and trying. who knows when he’ll finally die, not him and certainly not us.

7 - WOO TRAUMA mans is SO FUCKED UP. god where to even START with this. phil has not processed a single emotion in 500 years and he does NOT plan on starting now thank you very much. his sons death? nah lets build a country instead. watching his best friend be executed? nope not processing THAT lets find somewhere else to live oh yeah also i almost died. phils favourite thing is avoiding emotions and busying himself with some Other Task for Someone Else (new lmanburg, training room, various farms for techno, just to name a couple) so he Doesnt Have To Think About Anything. also perception of time? hell no he’s gonna be working for days without realising it. this is not healthy. he does not intend to stop. he blames himself for so much and rarely ever accepts help from anyone at all.

8 - kindness dont get me wrong if you get on the wrong side of phil you will find out exactly why some know him as the angel of death, but if ur not on that side of him, hes just. so kind and so caring. that one time when ranboo was deliberately trying to trigger the enderwalk out, and phil ran in and got rid of all the splash water bottles because he thought ranboo was getting hurt? yeah. that. protecting tommy without hesitation or question when dream was chasing him? yeah. that. building new lmanburg because tubbo had enough on his plate and he needed something to do anything to do he needed to keep his hands busy then it would be okay it had to be okay he had to be okay? yeah. that. visiting techno even while he was under house arrest to make sure he was okay? yeah. that.

9 - hes such a chaotic little fuck this is something a LOT of the fandom seem to. ignore. phil is not this sophisticated, calm, rational father figure. he can be sometimes (at a push) but thats not who he is. he’s an absolute chaos machine, and a fucking deadly one at that. he’s bored and you’re in the general vicinity? bye living! i think its well summed up in that one clip of phil and techno in a village, and techno’s grabbing a couple supplies here and there, and phil is just fucking gutting the place even if he doesnt actually need those supplies. he will murder (for fun), he will explode shit (for fun), he will cause mass genocide (for fun), he will fucking. idk he’ll do it all for fun.

10 - history imo, phil and techno are some of the best—if not the most—fleshed out characters in the dsmp. part of this, i reckon, is because of the history they have. you cannot talk about dsmp cphil properly without acknowledging smp earth and hardcore at the very least. the antarctic empire is there, phil and techno carry its shields and wear its colours. the angel of death is familiar to most if not all, the love for fucking freezing temperatures is there too. phil did decanonise the connection to hardcore, but a) many people who care ignore that, b) i ignore that, and c) it was there for at least a little, it had influence for at least a little. cphil is and old character, he didn’t just blip into existence in the dsmp, he has real, solid, pre-established history.

so yeah, thats cphil for you! im more than happy to go into more detail about any of the above things, just ask! that goes for literally anyone btw. ill happily talk about fanon and more fandom characterisations, but ive tried to keep it as close to canon as i can so far. what’s great is that despite what he claims, ccphil is an excellent roleplayer and general storyteller, hes always adding little details and explaining reasoning behind things, so theres so much nuance and so much depth to cphil and the section of the world he inhabits. can you tell that cphil is my favourite character perhaps.

It really depends. Nowadays, probably wolfstar. Some of them are pretty fucking annoying. But it's far from what it used to be. I was here during the gold old ship war days, and I remember dramione and harmione (?) stans being the most annoying people on the face of the earth. 2012 dramione fandom anyone? the ron bashing?? 2016 jily stans with the anti-snape posts??? *shudders*

Unwillingly is a strong word... I have read some good Tomarry fics in the last year (but. like. literally three (3). don't get excited) which is something that I would have rather gauged my own eyes out than do in the past. But then again only under very specific conditions for themes/setting/length/etc. It's not something I would ever look for, it's something I read if I know the author from other works and think “let's give it a try”... so, probably, I'm actually more in love with those authors' writing ability than the actual ship. You can tell if you actually like a ship in the following way: mediocre stories still make you swoon. You can tell if you like an author in the following way: I would rather get slapped in the face than read this ship but you make it interesting/enjoyable.

Jily is another, not because I disliked it in the way I dislike Tomarry but just 'cause it bores me a little. After exhausting any and all Snape character studies where he mopes about Lily (happy-ending Snily is not something I've ever liked) I thought meh, why not.

Oh! And you might be absolutely shocked to hear this but Belladolphus was one of these too. I was (and always will be) a Bellamort shipper, for my first few years in the fandom I was indifferent to Rodolphus at best. The man doesn't have a (1) single line in the books and we don't even really know what he looks like, but he's my angel and my baby and my darling and I accept no Rodolphus Lestrange slander in this house. All serious answer though:

1. Know the difference between values and morals. Just because you THINK it’s the right thing, doesn’t mean it IS the right thing.
