Behind the Fic: TW:OPT - Jonah Argentum’s Declassified Boarding School Survival Guide

We've finally done it, guys! We finally finished this filler arc!

This is actually harder to write since I don't have the base script for this. This arc is basically just me writing random incidents and hoping it could connect.

This was hard! How did anime do this millions times?!

WARNING: This will contain a bit of spoiler for the newest chapters of my fan fiction Twisted-Wonderland: Our Precious Treasure. Click here to read the whole arc from the beginning!

I think we should start from the beginning: why was this arc written? Well, originally it was supposed to tie up the "Jonah need to say thank you to Azul for cleaning his dorm" plot point. It was originally supposed to be a two bonus chapter, covering "Chapter 37: Come On and Get Your Game On!" and “Chapter 40: We Got a Hot Crustacean Band!". But because I was stubborn, I extended it into five episodes.

I have no reason why this arc was named after 'Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide'. I just thought it sounds cool (this will probably be a trend, I can feel it)

I also have no reason to pick random quotes from various media and memes as the summary. I just think that having quotes made it sound wiser. But then again, I’m quoting memes.

The first episode "Chapter 36: No Colors Anymore, I Want Them to Turn Black" actually covered Episode 2-3 until 2-4 of Savanaclaw Arc. I was thinking that Crowley needs to tell the boys about overblot as soon as possible.

I won't be revealing anything about Jonah's eye but it seems like absorbing the blot might end up damaging his eye.

"Chapter 37: Come On and Get Your Game On!" is part of the original draft. 

Ace was supposed to be there and it was partly inspired by Deuce's School Uniform Personal Story. 

This chapter was also inspired by Azul’s School Uniform Personal Story.

When Deuce mention about 'magical wheel', for some reason I immediately thought about a human-size hamster ball. I just think it's funny to see Deuce running around in a giant hamster ball.

The twins weren't supposed to appear here. It was supposed to be Azul who takes Jonah to the Board Game Club.

The reason why Jonah joined the Board Game Club is that I think the Board Game Club was the closest for Jonah to learn about strategy because being a captain in a pirate crew needs good planning.

In the original script, they were supposed to play a parody of Mario Party. But because of my wacky schedule, I have to cut it short and change it into a monopoly.

Originally, it was supposed to be based on PB&Jeff Super Mario Party gamplay but I changed into TheOdds1sOut Monopoly intro.

"Chapter 38: It’s the Same as Having Wings!" was interesting because it was supposed to show how Jonah is a natural flyer.

Originally, I was going to use the How To Train Your Dragon Test Flight sequence to show how Jonah and Grim can work together. But then I rethink it again. Jonah already has his natural cooking skill, if I give him a natural flying skill, will it make him a Gary Stu? So, in the end, I make him bad at flying. This is their early first-year after all.

Also, I let Epel shine in this chapter. I'm actually interested in how far their relationship will go and change before Pomefiore Arc.

"Chapter 39: Heads Held High, Touch the Sky, Our Hearts We Pledge to Thee!" was the hardest chapter to write and my least favorite. I was thinking to delete this chapter, but if that happens, I won't have a perfect episode list. This was also affected by Heartslabyul Arc. I think I deleted some chapters, which ended up with me keeping this Prefect Meeting episode.

The chats with Riddle about the Magishift Tournament was based on Episode 2-5 of Savanaclaw Arc.

Another reason why this chapter was hard was that I never pay attention to school student council meetings or was never invited, so I don't exactly know how it goes.

Jonah wants to punch Leona is probably the best part of this chapter. I was thinking to make them rivals, but I'm still not sure.

Jonah noticing Malleus was absent was an on-the-spot idea, completely unscripted.

"Chapter 40: We Got a Hot Crustacean Band!" was probably the best chapter in this arc. It's my personal favorite. 

It was a musical, so of course, it was longer.

What makes this chapter interesting, in my opinion, is the potentials in Octavinelle Arc. With Jonah already signing a contract with the Ramshackle Dorm on the line, what will he give when he needs to free his captured crew?

What were they like growing up? Morpheus was a quiet kid that stayed at home most of the time reading. The people from his hometown weren’t really fond of him.

What kind of drunk are they at a party? When he is drunk he’ll get super giggly. Say hi to him and he’ll giggle. Also, don’t get him drunk if you don’t wanna hear him sing. He may even serenade to you. He may also serenade to a total stranger.  

Reaction to someone telling a dirty joke? He’ll try to pretend he didn’t find it funny, but probably will ended up giggling and blushing.

Reaction to stubbing their toe? He’d curse the wall really loud and then proceed to check if his nail polish is damaged

Favorite color? Royal Purple

Favorite See’s chocolate? Bordeaux Pecan Fudge

Favorite poptart flavor? (I have never ate poptarts in my life so i have no idea what Morph would like)

Favorite hobby? Reading and writing.

How they sing at karaoke parties? It depends on who is with him. If he is with strangers or people he’s not very close he probably won’t sing anything, even though he has a great singing voice he is pretty shy, he’ll probably bring a book with him. However, if he is with friends who are up to sing with him, then Morpheus will mostly do a full performance. He’ll only sing the songs he knows he’ll be able to rock.(Have you ever seen Adam Lambert performances? Like that.)   

Preferred social media platform? Pinterest. 

Opinion on puns? He loves puns, especially bad ones.

How do they typically deal with their problems? At first he may try ignoring it. He’ll get anxious if he needs to deal with it and may have a problem speaking up. After noticing the problems won’t just vanish he’ll start dealing with them at his own pace, alone. He’s still getting used to the idea of having people he can count on, so asking his friends for help is the last resource and he’ll feel guilty about it. 

Spice girl nickname? Apprentice Cheeky Spice (thanks Raven)

Personal hygiene routine? He takes quite long baths every night. More often than not he forgets to take his make-up off before entering the bath, so he usually takes the makeup after. 

Favorite alcoholic drink? Probably mead.

Favorite genre of music? Indie folk and glam rock.

Modern AU job/career? Make-up artist and booktuber on his free time.

Favorite musical? It’s not broadway but, Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Apprentice Morgan (The Arcana)

Decided I’d do this questionnaire I saw floating around in order to nail down some more details about my fan apprentice for The Arcana, Morgan. For the record, they’re a grumpy nerd who exists in the same canon as @fairysealmother‘s apprentice Amalthea; Morgan’s on Asra’s route, Amalthea is on Julian’s.

Their surname?  Reid. 

Halloween costume? They’d complain the entire time about dressing up being a hassle and then show up in a pirate costume that they’ve lovingly handmade. 

Familiar/animal friend? If they had one, it would be a fox, but at the moment they don’t have one. 

Big spoon or little spoon?

Little spoon almost always. 

Religious?

Not particularly. They’d describe themselves as spiritual--as in they believe there’s something out there--but not religious per se. 

Favorite fruit?

They’re really fond of orange-flavored things. 

Idea of a nice date?

Shutting the shop for a day, going on a long walk on the beach and just talking/playing in the waves, shopping for dinner food on the way back, making and eating a nice dinner together, reading together/falling asleep together. 

Favorite season?

Fall. Morgan loves fall more than almost anything else. 

When is their Birthday?

August 21

Favorite carnival ride?

They love rollercoasters but also can only go on the scary ones once and curse the entire time.

They usually will either be reading extensively, re-organizing the shop, or taking walks outside.

I feel like they’d like soccer quite a bit. Wouldn’t be very good at it, though. They’d like Tae Kwon Do or a similar martial art.

Some old beat-up car they got used and very carefully take care of. But they prefer to walk. 

How do they treat their significant other when they’re feeling unusually affectionate?

Very clingy out of nowhere, going out of their way to do nice things for them/get them what they like, very flustered when confronted by any of this. 

Favorite manga?

Gotta say they’d like Boku no Hero Academia. 

Main store to shop for clothes (if they lived in our world)?

Secondhand stores where they can get used-but-not-too-used jeans, cargo pants, and t-shirts

What were they like growing up?

They were a pretty rowdy kid. Their grandmother, the prior owner of their shop, looked after them, but a lot of the time they were fending for themselves, which contributed to their prickly, abrasive attitude and defensiveness. 

What kind of drunk are they at a party?

Affectionate sappy drunk. Anyone who points this out once they’re sober will see full Flustered And Angry Morgan. 

Reaction to someone telling a dirty joke?

Depending on the level of the joke and at whose expense it is, either an eyeroll, a snicker, or righteous outrage. 

Reaction to stubbing their toe?

Loud and profuse cursing.

Either going for long walks or sewing, which they picked up out of necessity and continued because it was cathartic.

Well, but only under great duress. Very hard to get them to the mic but they can belt pretty much any song you give them.

Every time they hear one you can see them go through the five stages of grief. 

How do they typically deal with their problems?

Their usual thought process is “well time to talk to Nobody about this Ever and repress it for the rest of my life”. However, if it is one of their friends’ problems, they will do anything to fix it, usually in a rather belligerent manner.

I have no idea unfortunately. 

Personal hygiene routine?

They shower every day or every other day depending on time, wash their hands often because they work with a lot of different herbs and resins in the shop and some of them aren’t good to have lingering around. They try to look put-together but not very fancy.

Total sucker for hard lemonade

Either they would do what they do in Vesuvia, which is run an apothecary, or they’d be a queer activist. Or both.

They’ll say it’s American Idiot but in reality they’re a huge sap and love Wicked.

Waking up/going out early to get their favorite food for breakfast, closing the shop for the day and spending it with them instead; going out of their way to do nice things and make things easier for them. Nothing huge or dramatic or showy, but they’ll make sure that person is happy for the entire day. 

Would they rather turn into a tiny rhinoceros or a giant hamster?

Tiny rhinoceros. 

What would they do for their significant other for Valentine’s Day?

Similarly to their birthday, but given that there’s two-way spoiling on Valentine’s Day they get very flustered and blush a lot whenever they’re complimented/something is done for them .

Pros and cons to having them as a roommate?

Pros: Cleans things up quickly and well, will clean up your stuff, will go out of their way to help you if they like you, good at fixing things

Cons: Will clean your stuff sometimes when you don’t want them to; will bottle up all emotions and then end up sobbing on your shoulder at 3am. 

On a scale from 1-10 how Extra are they?

They’d say a three but instead they’re closer to a six or seven. Compared to some of the other cast, though, that’s nothing.
