it was as if the plague had made a deal with the devil.

and the devil was going to pay.

- Kaz:

Expects to see like Jordie or money. But it's him and Inej. Holding hands - smiling - gloveless. And when he's about to look away mirror Kaz and mirror Inej turn to each other and kiss - no hint of trauma, no hint of second thoughts. Kaz leaves with his head down, trying to hide tears.

"What did you see in the mirror, Kaz?"

"Myself, doused in krudge."

His family. His mother, his father, and Wylan, holding his hands, smiling at him, but he knows it's more than just that, too - he sees in the mirror acceptance and love from people who truly know him.

"What about you, Jes?"

"Winning every table in Ketterdam, love. Me, but richer."

Matthias. Alive. Breathing. With her. And a child - their child - made out of peace in a world of war between their people.

She cried. She wept. But she left the room with her head high.

"Nina?"

"A life supply of waffles."

A life full of freedom, far from the chains of his past, a life with Jesper and a new family.

"What about you, Wylan?"

"A new flute. Golden."

A ship sailing the wild seas, free of burden, full of possibility. And on that ship was Kaz Brekker. Not hers. Maybe never hers. But alive. And smiling.

"Inej?"

"A beautiful ship on the ocean," she said. Kaz looked away to the harbor and for a fleeting second she could have sworn something like pain flickered across his eyes.
