Proposal for a new gramatic term: the phonetic palindrome. Aka, an palindrome, but it doesn't reverse any diphthongs/other letter pairings that make a different sound than the original letters (i.e. th, sh, ch, er, ar, or, ir, ur, ou, oi, oy)
The only example I have on hand right now is thorn/north, but I shall keep my eye out for more.

As much as I wish I was born in a more tolerant future, I've got to admit that this life is pretty good sometimes. I get to debate what flavor of trans Henry Tilney is with my best friend, while sewing as my day job, on an electric machine.
I may be broke, I may be stressed, I may be struggling. But I do get to live, not just survive.

August 14th:
Coffee shop! Studied for three hours then retook the mini exam and did much better this time. I'll move onto section three tomorrow which only has five modules instead of nine and is on cost accounting. I took my cost accounting class in college a year and a half ago so I'm really hoping some of this material comes back to me. Tomorrow one of my friends is having a going away party since she's moving this weekend so I'll have to work hard and get all my studying done early in the day. The goal is going to be three and a half hours of studying and modules one and two done of section 3. I've got to keep moving!
Today's accounting topic: Cost accounting focuses on what businesses deal with on a daily basis by assessing the cost of production.
Other activity: I went back to the new and used book store and bought Mansfield Park and Persuasion by Jane Austin as well as Villette by Charlotte Brontë! I read Wuthering Heights in high school so I'm excited to read another Bronte sister's book. Now I just need Emma and Northanger Abby to complete my Jane Austin collection and now I've started a Brontë sisters collection!

I read Wuthering Heights for the first time last winter and it absolutely wrecked me in the best way. Is there anything else like this you would recommend Abby?
ah so many options ranging from the romance to the gothic to the horror... depends on what grabs you! i keep recommending the same books over and over again so i'm sorry in adavance lol i'll try to pull a little deeper in a bit and add more
rebecca by daphne du maurier, jane eyre by charlotte bronte (paired with wide saragasso sea by jean rhys), ethan frome by edith wharton, beloved by toni morrison, flowers in the attic by vc andrews (yes.), anything angela carter but especially love and the bloody chamber collection, jane austen's northanger abbey is always fun, i would also honestly recommend you look into helen oyeyemi's work

Ok what Jane Austen novel do you think is Eddie's favorite because I read something that said it would be Mansfield Park, but personally I think he would like Northanger Abby the best.
I think it depends on when in his life you're asking.
I think Sense & Sensibility was his first favorite. I think he would really identify with Eleanor Dashwood - someone who keeps their emotions in tight check and doesn't feel free to speak of them and has a strong sense of duty. I think he would also like Colonel Brandon, in a slightly idolizing way and in a slightly "yeah I'd end up in that situation like a dumbass" kind of way.
As he got older I think he would identify more with Persuasion. Given everything with Shannon I think Eddie would really feel for Anne, someone who also has made mistakes in her love life and deeply regrets them and wishes she could redo them, even though that choice felt like the right thing to do at the time. I think he'd also, again because of Shannon, understand Captain Wentworth's position of loving someone and being unsure if you can forgive them. And now that he's in a position of pining after Buck (I mean it's not confirmed but personally I think that's where the show is angling), he'd identify with both Anne and Wentworth, being painfully in love with someone and thinking you missed your chance and trying to distract yourself with something lower-stakes and lighthearted. "Half agony, half hope" indeed.
But, while those are his favorite(s), I do think he'd enjoy Pride & Prejudice and have a soft spot for it because Lizzie would remind him of Buck.

Books read in 2023:
The secret life of bees (Jan 6) 4/5 (probably would have enjoyed it more when I was younger. Great overall but still the mammy stereotype. Don’t like it when poc women are portrayed as ~divine creatures~ we are just normal people and we just wanted to treated like normal people. Nothing more, nothing less. Too flowery and cliche at parts but still good overall.)
I’m glad my mom died (Jan 15) 5/5 (funny and thrilling. Reading this would probably help a lot of people with toxic parents think through their own trauma)
Evil Under the Sun (Jan 17) 4/5 (simple and entertaining. Not a masterwork of literature but satisfying nonetheless. A bit slow to get started but great overall)
The hunting party (Feb 4) 4/5 (found hard to get into it/get invested because of unlikeable cast of characters but stil high rating for unexpected ending. I was bored a few times in the beginning and middle parts but it really picked up in the end and made up for it. Would make a great movie)
Sparkling cyanide (audiobook) (Feb 20) 3/5 (good to listen to while doing other work around the house. Probably not worth it to take separate time out to read)
Last bus to Woodstock (Feb 24) 3/5 (hated the main detective and how he went about the investigation eg. relying on instinct and chance discoveries. But the side characters were super interesting and the ending was unexpected. Would have liked it better if inspector Lewis was the main character. No decent female characters. Only wh*res or the "shrill wife." But the crime itself was interesting and I liked the writing style).
And then there were none (audiobook) (Feb 26) 5/5 (Omg. I was in thrall throughout. My favorite Agatha Christie book I’ve read so far. I actually thought there had to be a supernatural explanation lol)
The dark remains (feb 26) 3/5 (not bad. Just boring. Can tell it was written by a dude. Not one interesting character despite being set in the gang world. Very cliche type of noir)
The Falls (Ian Rankin) (March 1) 4/5 (great buildup but disappointing payoff. Loved the concept of the quizmaster. Very likable the main detectives and very interesting plot. Sustains you throughout despite being so long. But yeah. Didn’t quite like the solution to the murder)
Wire in the blood (March 22) 5/5 (excellent. Gory but excellent. What a plot!)
The distant echo (March 30) 5/5 (omg. If someone asks me what’s your favorite crime fiction book I’d say this one! Very suspenseful and unpredictable loved it loved it loved it!!!!)
The Guest List (April 13) 6/5 (this surpasses the distant echo. This actually made me feel things. The amount of gasps I gusped could have powered the state of Texas for a year. Absolutely loved it. )
East of Eden (May 15) 100/5 (what kind of genius do you have to be to write such a book?
In Cold Blood 4/5 (May 30) maybe bc I already knew the story, I kinda had to force myself to finish this
Macbeth 5/5 (June 14) iconic
Northanger Abby by Val Mcdermid 4/5 (June 17) fun modern retelling. Expected a crime and twist but it was faithful to the original. Enjoyed reading.
Gone girl 6/5 (June 24) omg her mind. Will definitely read more by her. Wish I hadn’t seen the movie before so I could have been fully surprised. Liked the ending.
The Pearl (5/5) (July 3) not a page turner but a good depiction of reality. Very sad.
Age of Vice 3/5 (July 7) great beginning but I didn’t like the ending. I think the author tried to put too many stories and perspectives in one. That whole bit of Sunil was unnecessary? It just slowed the story down at such a crusial moment. And Sunny’s backstory with Vicky too. I don’t think it was necessary to have an unbelievably tragic backstory for every character and he already had his deal with his dad. Some things are never clarified like what happened to his mom, his true relationship with Vicky. Why Ajay agreed. Ajay turns out of be such a loser in the end. Maybe it’s “realistic” but lots of things that happen in this book are not realistic so I don’t know why only the ending has to be realistic. I wish I could have followed Ajay’s journey to a good ending.
Milk fed 2/5 (August 12) only read bc of booktok. Good seeds here and there. didn't realy like it.
The club (5/5) (august 19) excellent, gripping. A bit longer than it needed to be though.
The grownup Gillian Flynn (4/5) (October 19) great short story. Great writing. So engaging. Perfect length for getting back into reading
Emma by charlotte Brontë and another lady (5/5) (Nov 2) love. Mr. Ellin needs to be played by Simon Baker in a movie.
A room of one’s own by Virginia Woolf (Nov 11) (1000/5). This has been on my to read list for ages. I see quotes from this everywhere and every time I’m astounded by how she just she gets it and knows exactly what to say to express it perfectly. The essay was everything I imagined it would be. Forever grateful to that Destiel fanfic for introducing me to this.
Villette (4/5) (Dec 29) lovely
Girl, interrupted (5/5) (Dec 31) made me ponder about a lot of things. Her youth was really kind of stolen from her. Made to freeze just like that painting. what is the right thing to do? What is helping and what is hurting? What does “crazy” even mean? I think I tend to be very judgemental about this kind of stuff. But this book made me realize that people are people even if you do not understand why they act a certain way. They feel the same as me.

IFD 2023 - Crossover and Fusion Fic Recs
Look. It would be tacky to recommend my own crossover fic. So I'm not gonna do that. But here are some current faves in that arena, from multiple fandoms (all of these are from AO3, though if I had time I would dig for some old FF.Net ones)
The End of Magic (Avalon High/BBC Merlin) Where Allie is the Lady of the Lake as she was in the book, while Miles is still Merlin and still in love with said Lady of the Lake. Ending’s a bit sad, but there are so few Avalon High fics, let alone Merlin crossovers, so I had to rep.
every breath, every hour has come to this (Avalon High/BBC Merlin) Merlin never reincarnated in Miles, but Arthur reincarnated into Allie. Merlin finally finds Arthur after all this time, and gets a bit of a shock. Merthur.
if you ever did believe (Ted Lasso/Practical Magic fusion) Rebecca is a witch cursed to either die of a broken heart or become consumed with bitterness. After Rupert betrays her, she's leaning towards bitterness... but a spell cast in her youth may come back to change all that. Lots of interesting departures from the Practical Magic plot specifics while still capturing the magical feel. Also, even funnier since Hannah Waddingham has played a witch more than once. Also Ted/Rebecca centric, which is just adorable.
The Schneiders of Stars Hollow (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel/Gilmore Girls) "Jess is tasked with taking a delivery order to 36 Maple, where a nice old couple from New York spend a few months out of the year. It turns out that the Schneiders are...not quite who Jess thinks they are." (Or: Lenny Bruce marries Midge instead of dying of an overdose in the 60s. Marital bliss and a name change ensues). I just love this idea so much. I'm not even much of a Midge/Lenny shipper, but the idea of them as an old couple wintering in Stars Hollow and snarking at the goings-on is just too good. Also highly recommend checking out the author's tumblr ( @wonderlandleighleigh) , she sometimes posts drabble fics in this universe and they are, in a word, marvelous!
Bright (Agents of Shield/Stardust fusion) Fitzsimmons as Yvaine and Tristan respectively are so cute, while also flipping gender roles for fun. I'm just happy to see the Stardust film referenced, even if it has to be in the form of fusions like this. Also features Steggy as Jemma's parents, which *yes*.
Harry Potter: The Legends Reborn (Harry Potter/BBC Merlin) What if Harry and Draco were the reincarnations of Merlin and Arthur? How do sworn enemies reconcile with their pasts as close friends? How does Harry reconcile his incredible abilities as Merlin while trying to hide out as a typical (if famous) Hogwarts student? Features some surprising reincarnations and fascinating character parallels. Only drawback is the author is more familiar with the movies than the books in a few places, but overall good stuff. (note: platonic Merthur/Drarry, not shipping)
Guardian Tadashi AU (Lighting Candles and A Friend in the Dark) (Rise of the Guardians/Big Hero 6) Gets a little angsty at times, what with Tadashi dealing with existential crisis after existential crisis now that he's a magical spirit whose brother can't see him, but overall hopeful and beautiful. Really fleshes out Tadashi as his own chaarcter beyond the saintly older brother, and the banter and imagery are pretty amazing.
Don't be shocked when your hist'ry book mentions me (Sleepy Hollow(TV)/Hamilton) Alexander Hamilton wakes up in modern day Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod and Abbie are there to help.
In a pub, briefly (Outlander/Captain America MCU) I just love the idea of Peggy Carter and Claire as friends during World War II. Sue me.
Henry Tilney and Mr. Norrell (Northanger Abbey/Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell) Henry Tilney is the second magician in England, but his magics are more based in his mothers homemaking spells than anything big and flashy, so it's lovingly feminist in its way. Also, Catherine is just so into it.I really wish the author had gone a bit farther with this one, but what's there is quite lovely.
My Heart Don't Wish to Roam> (Captain America/Merlin/Doctor Who) This series of Steggy AU one-shots includes a couple of different fusion ideas, which I enjoy.
