I used to think the reason why my dad became my soccer coach, my scout troop leader, basically the head of any activity I wanted to do as a kid was because he thought he needed to keep an eye on me because I was a bad kid.

Turns out the reason he took on these second, third, sometimes fourth unpaid jobs was because we were poor, and if he volunteered his time I could participate for free. And it was guaranteed time together, either at the activity or just in the car to and from.

You know that Ada Limón poem where she’s like “i can’t help it i love the way men love”? my dad recently confessed to me that he became a shoemaker because they buried my grandma shoeless
