Dear, free world: Apathy No More!
Note 1: Resharing my post from my terminated Tumblr account (@mahmoudkhalafff).
Note 2: Short-term goal of 30k for evacuation has been thankfully achieved. I am consulting with the Irish Refugee Council and Doras in Ireland regarding the procedures and requirements for issuing reunification visas once the crossing is operational and my family can evacuate for Egypt. We are a big family of many brothers and sisters who have so many children. They are scattered in different areas in the Gaza Strip including the North of Gaza where they can be very hard contact sometimes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many other Gazans in Limerick are working hard and reaching out to Irish politicians and MPs to facilitate a safe passage for their families out of Gaza to Ireland.
When piles and piles of people are apathetic when it comes to the genocide unfolding in Gaza, be the source of relief, hope, and support for the stranded helpless besieged people there. Astonishingly, our life in Gaza turned upside down in an instant?! We woke up one day to realize that a massive-scale war was to be launched against more than 2 million people in Gaza. My Facebook timeline was filled with countless posts in which Gazans publicly asked for forgiveness before their expected imminent mass murder. Can you imagine what it feels like reading all these scary posts and wondering if you should say a final 'Goodbye'?!
Then, Gazans ventured on their own version of Via Dolorosa (Way of Suffering) which included multiple forced displacements, acute life-threatening shortages of water and food, lost jobs, humiliation, mass destruction, injuries, and murder.
It is beyond shocking and sickening how desensitized our world has become to see all the horrifying images of children's body parts scattered everywhere and not lift a finger to stop this ruthless and inhumane genocide. I can say with all certitude on behalf of my people in Gaza that we have lost hope in all the vile desensitized regimes and politicians of the world.
However, we still have strong faith in the lovers and supporters of our just cause who never cease to shower us with their heartwarming words of support and uplifting wishes. Our belief in your humanity and support for our just cause drives us to ask you for help in this worst crisis in our history since the Nakba.

"Measles used to be an extremely common disease. Just sixty years ago, over 90% of children would have been infected by it, and of those who developed symptoms, around a quarter would be hospitalized.1
The United States alone had around three to four million cases annually, leading to tens of thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths each year.2
However, in 1963, John Enders developed the first effective measles vaccine. Vaccination efforts ramped up rapidly in richer countries, and in the 1970s and 1980s, they were scaled up worldwide.
In just the last fifty years, it’s estimated that measles vaccinations have prevented over ninety million deaths worldwide. Two to three million people would die from measles every year without them.3 This means these vaccines are likely the most life-saving ones currently in use, as you can see in the chart.4 ...
Tumblr media
...Measles deaths continued to be common in poorer countries until vaccines became widely available. In the chart below, you can see that hundreds of thousands of people died from measles annually in Africa and South-East Asia between the 1980s and 2000s.
Tumblr media
Measles vaccination saves millions of lives each year
The global rollout of measles vaccines has been one of history’s most successful public health efforts. Each year, they save millions of lives.
This is especially true in low-income countries where children face the highest risk of dying from measles because of poorer overall health, nutrition, and living standards.10 ...
In the 1980s, coverage was very low in many parts of the world, especially in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Eastern Mediterranean. In some countries, like Yemen, only 2% of children received vaccines; in Spain, only 8%.
But since then, vaccination rates have increased rapidly.
One reason is the scale-up of the Expanded Programme on Immunization by the World Health Assembly from the 1970s, which aimed to vaccinate children against the deadliest infectious diseases, including measles. Vaccination efforts reached more than 90 million children — or 60% of all infants — by the early 2000s.
But millions of children were still left behind, particularly in poorer countries. In response, the Gavi Vaccine Alliance was established in 2000 to close these gaps and ensure that life-saving vaccines reached the most vulnerable children.
Now, over a hundred million infants receive vaccinations for measles, which is over 80% of them.
These efforts have transformed global health, dramatically reducing child mortality.
This next chart shows estimates of the cumulative number of lives saved by measles vaccinations over time.13
Tumblr media
Fifty years since the start of measles vaccination programs, we can see that their impact has been substantial: researchers estimate that 94 million lives have been saved from measles vaccines. That means, on average, nearly two million measles deaths prevented every year.13
The impact has been greatest in Africa, with 29 million lives saved, and Southeast Asia, with 20 million lives saved. These are regions where measles was a leading cause of death in children until recently.
This means measles vaccines rank as the most life-saving childhood vaccines currently in use.4"

Love getting feedback on an assignment where the professor praises my work and says it's a very thorough analysis. But then I get an 83. I even checked off everything on the rubric to make sure I'd get a good grade.
Um, I'm trying to get all As for this masters degree I can't be earning low Bs on assignments. I can get a high B because I can balance that with a high A but anything below an 85 is going to ruin this goal.

listen, the point isn't that the appalachian mountains are old in a vague sense. like, the age of the appalachian mountains doesn't exist in a vacuum. the point is that they're older -- in some cases by orders of magnitude -- than things that are often perceived as timeless.
like, yeah, obviously mountains are old, everyone knows that, that in and of itself is not the interesting thing. the interesting thing is that the rings of saturn -- which are, in popular imagery, associated with the unending vastness of space and, by association, the endlessness of time -- are in the neighbourhood of one-tenth the age of the appalachian mountains.
the interesting thing is that we're walking around on structures that are older than bones, which are so established in the public consciousness as a permanent and unchanging aspect of the world that it can be literally difficult to conceptualise life before they existed.
it's about context, dude. like we think of the Atlantic Ocean as being a major and permanent element of the world, which, to our scale, it kind of is -- it started forming almost two hundred million years ago, which is, on a human timeframe, basically eternal. but that's less than half the age of the appalachians. there are two things (an ocean and a mountain) that are symbolic of eternity, and it can be incredibly fascinating to engage with the idea that, when Eternal Symbol 2 formed, Eternal Symbol 1 was already hundreds of millions of years old. it's like realising that a 90-year-old man was already a full adult when a 60-year-old man was born even though they are, now, both "old" people.
it's about opening up your perception of history. like that thing about how Cleopatra was born closer to the invention of the Zune than to the building of the great pyramid. like, if the vast majority of what someone knows about history occurred in the past 2000 years, it can be a little mind-blowing for that someone to realise that "Ancient Egypt" alone had even more history than that.
and that's the thing that's interesting about the age of the appalachians. hearing "the appalachians are older than the rings of saturn" can reshape someone's perception of time.'
and if you don't find that interesting then, like, idk man, go eat a hot dog and think about feather dusters or whatever it is you do

WAKE UP DAMN IT!
synopsis: on a scale from 1 to 100%, how difficult is it to wake them up? (1.08k)
warnings: contains SPOILERS from lesson 16, mentions of nightmares
Tumblr media
lucifer
depends, but most of the times it's 1% since he's a light sleeper, he has to, so his brothers wouldn't burn the house down with any of their antics or so...
depends on the long working nights he pulls out for Diavolo's paperwork pushed on him. In this occasions he may become a 10% difficult to wake up.
his reaction may vary, since he's the one supposed to wake you and the rest of the brothers up, he'd be at first embarrased and surprised.
still, when he recognizes you, he relaxes for a brief moment and mutters a sleepy "thank you MC."
Tumblr media
mammon
may be different from time to time.
the morning next to a horror special sleepover may lead to the both of your getting scared, so it's then a 3% difficult fully wake him up and a 10000% scary. why? Mammon would scream from your light touch on his shoulder to wake him and you'd scream because he did. It would go on like this for at least 2 more times in the same morning.
but when it had been a normal night or a casino one, he'd just whine at your attempts and he may have or have not tried more than once to pull you to bed and sleep again as if you were his sleeping pillow... so does it count as a 90% mostly?
Tumblr media
leviathan
also depends as you can imagine.
when he, for some reason, does not watch anime or plays videogames 'till the alarm goes off, he may be a 1% difficult to wake. unlike Mammon, he'd get scared almost everytime. that you wake him. squeaking a little, he thanks and tells you he'll be ready in a moment.
although when he does sleep late, you'll find one of two sceneries; the most common of these being him still glued to the screen, headphones on, then you'll just have to take them off and he'll make a little sound surprised but won't budge further. the other one is him being fast asleep on his desk and the computer on, a bit of saliva on the corner of his lips threatening to fall.
those occasions it is recommendable to poke or shake just a little his shoulder and still you'll get a big reaction from him and that's it.
Tumblr media
satan
i think he's kind of a heavy sleeper when he gets through the night reading. getting so engrossed on the story he even dreams with it and him being an active participant. then it'd be a 30% difficult to wake him.
your best shot to get him to open his eyes without being scared to dear life? scream from affar something that'd normally pick his interest. here are some examples:
"oh, Lucifer! did you just fall for that? i saw Satan make it! so his plan finally succeeded?!". now that it's a great one but you may have a more difficult time calming him down when you tell him that was a lie. "aww a little stray cat? sir what can I bring to you? oh? you want Satan to feed you? but he's asleep—" well he's not anymore and if it's true that a cat it's at the house's door expect to have a happy Satan for the rest of the day.
when he has a good night sleep, it's 1% difficult, normally he wouldn't miss any of their brothers or your shaking on his shoulder so that'd be enough.
Tumblr media
asmodeus
to begin with, being the only one who has a more decent and planned sleep schedule, it's impressive how difficult it can be than his brothers. he's a 50% when sleeping 8 hours straight in the comfiest bed of the Devildom. this is because when he sees you, he starts whining and doing grabby hands to go to sleep with you now. oh, but if it is any of his brothers? "Asmo, you have to wake up, we have school—" "ok, going..."
but if he had a party night, it's a different story.
if he was not drunk and did a night routine at 5 a.m. to be awake at 6 or 7 a.m. it'd be a 20% difficult to get him, because he'd not be able to sleep quickly. so you'll end up hugging him to recharge him for the day. if he in fact, came drunk, it's a 60%, you'd find a semi-naked Asmo barely resting on the bed with make up all over the pastel-pink sheets. you better know if he had one of these night because Lucifer will not allow to bring him smelling like Demonus.
Tumblr media
beelzebub
he normally has a good sleep because his work outs exhaust him after a big dinner plate he's a sleeping like a baby. for this he's 15% difficult to wake. light touches do nothing to him so you'd have to fully shake him to stir a reaction from him.
in the nights he has to go for a snack at 3 a.m. it decreases to a 7% because he could not stop thinking about going for another round of food. when he has a nightmare he's most likely to keep thinking about it for a complete day, so those days you'll find him awake by himself. ask him why has he been pacing out and looking really down with a snack on your hands.
Tumblr media
belphegor
if he had a nightmare about his family in any way, from them dying, from him being trapped in the attic and fighting with Lucifer through the bars, to the day he killed you... he wouldn't be able to sleep again, so then it'll be a 2% difficult to wake. maybe he'd pout a little but it's his way to bring himself back to reality and see everyone's still alive and he's on his bed in his and Beel's room, so when you're not seeing, he sighs relaxed.
however, when he's having a good dream, it'd be 100% and might have to bring Beel to help you, wether it'd be waking him with his twins trust and playful tactics or carrying him around the house to get him to do something.
Tumblr media
BONUS
the first time you're tasked to wake up Beelzebub, as you may have or not screamed when he turned to face you but still he did not open his eyes, you ran to get any other brother to help you.

Would you be willing to explain what a 2:1 means? I can tell it’s good, but not whether a 2:1 is better or worse than a 2:2, or how good it is (though it’s clearly amazing for them and the situation).
AuDHD USAmerican here, so I’m following everything but the grading scale
- Reina
You can look up the conversion to US systems on Google - a lot of websites are out there to explain the equivalency for students from one system transferring to the other, and that will probably give you a cultural touchstone for understanding it. But in a nutshell:
UK degrees, once awarded, are either First Class, Upper Second Class, Lower Second Class, or Third Class. That's a mouthful, though, so from best to worst, they get abbreviated to:
A first
A 2:1 (verbally pronounced 'two one')
A 2:2 (pronounced 'two two')
A third.
The most common award is actually the 2:2. It used to be affectionately nicknamed the Desmond (because Desmond Tutu/two two. Get it? Oh, how we laughed.)
If you look up the actual grade boundaries in terms of percentages, you'll definitely find them weird from an American perspective, but UK degree marking systems are more rigorous in terms of the numbers given - American students famously struggle to get used to it if they study in the UK, because they're so used to needing to get, like, 90% and up, which is nearly unheard of over here. So that's where a website describing the equivalency of US grades would be helpful.
So, when I say Ceri managed to pull off a low 2:1, I mean he got the second highest grade boundary, while thinking it was "probably a pass, maybe a 2:2."
I am endlessly proud of them. I've been bouncing all week
