Color Psychology in Tarot, part 1

Initial Comparison Between Two Decks

So as part of my personal musings on the relation between color and suit in RWS-based tarot decks, I decided to compare two of my own decks and show the pictures that resulted from them. These two decks are the Manga Tarot from Lo Scarabeo (written by Riccardo Minetti and illustrated by Anna Lazzarini) and the Celestial Tarot Cards from Kalan (and illustrated presumably by Canva because I've seen these clip arts in Canva before).

Notes: The Manga Tarot genderbends every single card in the deck and some Major Arcana cards are, thus, renamed (the Magician to the Sorceress, the High Priestess to the Priest, the Hanged Man to the Hanged Woman, and the Star to the Stars). The Celestial Tarot is a pip deck, and I mean that in the most intense way possible - every card is vaguely illustrated.

Example 1: Major Arcana - Death, the Devil, the Tower

The biggest example of how color comparisons break down across these two decks is seen in the Major Arcana.

The Manga Tarot is dominated by a single color, though that color varies depending on the card. Death and the Devil are both red. The Tower and the Sun (not pictured) are both yellow. The Empress and the Hanged Woman (neither pictured) are both green. The Moon and the Hermit (neither pictured) are both blue. The Fool (not pictured) is grey to demonstrate how they're at the beginning of their journey and have a ways to go. The World has all of the colors to demonstrate the end of the journey and completion.

The Celestial Tarot (on the right in each image) has a multicolored rainbow background and then a transparent white overlay. This avoids attributing elements to the Major Arcana.

Example 2: Minor Arcana - 4 of Cups or Chalices, Queen of Pentacles, Ace of Swords, and 8 of Wands

This is the best illustration of how the two decks approach the predominant color of their suits.

The Manga Tarot utilizes Western color psychology and matches them with suits in terms of personality. Yellow is associated with happiness, so it's tied to the Chalices, which rule emotions. Green is about money, abundance, and nature, so it's attached to the Pentacles suit, which rules the physical realm. Blue has connotations of intelligence and ties it to the intellectual Swords. And Red is about action and personality, tying it to Wands.

The Celestial Tarot Cards, on the other hand, tie the colors to the suits based on color. Blue is Water and Cups, Green is Earth and Pentacles, Red is Fire and Swords (according to some people), and Yellow is Air and Wands (again, according to some people).

Most tarot decks go with Swords = Air and Wands = Fire, but the Celestial Tarot Cards went a different direction and swapped the two. You're going to find all kinds of people who argue that this is how it's actually supposed to be, but we're not here about that detail.

In Conclusion

While most tarot decks either utilize color psychology in far more subtle ways or don't use it at all, these two decks are so overt in their usage of color that they make good examples for an introductory testing post.

I was crossing the park when I checked my email and saw that there had been a plane crash in Brazil.

The hair on my arms stood on end. My mind went to last night when blinded by the light played. It hadn’t played in months.

(In March 2022 I woke with it in my head, and it just kept playing in my mind. So I went to the roof to figure it out. I could tell there was some message for me to get from the buzzing in my body.

The first time I sang it, I was still unclear.

But the 2nd time, I saw a plane crash. I gasped. And sobbed a lot. Then I grabbed my phone and posted “there’s going to be a plane crash”.

The next morning the news reported there had just been a plane crash in China. )

Last night when it played it crossed my mind that we might be hearing about a plane crash today, but you just don’t know til you know.

It’s easy to cling to other things in that song, especially because that was the first song I heard Blue talking through:

“But mama, that's where the fun is.”

And because it talks about calliope crashing into the ground, which is one of the things the spirits use to refer to me, with all my poetic license, and falling.

What hits me the most about this is the way they talk about things before they happen. What does that say about destiny and free will and spirits knowing about what will happen to us before we do?

*Ages of this post based on information from Jason and Tim's original runs in the 80s, as im still in the process of reading the comics and I respect original runs more anyway

Jason was 12 (pre-crisis, not contradicted) when Bruce adopted him at some point after Dick left, and Dick had left Wayne Manor for about 2 years by the time Jason died (Batman #436) making Jason 14 at death, to turn 15 that year if his birthday is August 16th

Tim is 13 when he introduces himself after Jason's death (Batman #441)

They have like, a 1-2 year age difference

Jason returns to life 6 months after his death, spends 1 year in the hospital, then 1 year on the streets before someone recognizes him as Robin, then 1 year with the league of assassin's before being thrown into the pit (Batman Annual #25)

A total of 3 years with Jason running on just instinct and muscle memory before being healed by the pit

Therefore, Jason, while physically older, is largely missing 3 years of his life

Jason is younger than Tim

lyanna stark means so much to me. i have made a post about her before and how she is the most enigmatic characters that is talked about a lot through the series but still no one seems to know her truly. which just amplifies the fact that she was just 16 years old when she died. she was an angry sad 16 year old girl that no one could understand. she wasn’t some glorified saint like robert remembers her as she wasn’t a tragic character in some play she was a real living breathing girl that was full of love and hope and anger. she wasn’t just one thing.

i believe that she willingly left with rhaegar but didn’t think it through completely because SHE WAS 16 and when she heard her father and brother died because of her she wanted to go back to her family but rhaegar was so obsessed without he prophecy that he made her stay.

“No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice, “now it ends.” As they came together in a rush of steel and shadow, he could hear Lyanna screaming. “Eddard!” she called. A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death.”

she fucking screamed for her brother. in the end she wasn’t some brave she-wolf or a martyr she was a scared little girl who was impulsive and wanted her big brother to save her.

if you believe R+L=J theory (which i do) then her prodigal son who was never meant to be this ancient prophecy come to life is alone in the world and has no clue how much his mother would’ve loved him. but jon shoudlve never been born. lyanna shoudlve never been in that situation.

i’ve also seen a lot of people blaming lyanna and shit talking about her and that’s just flat out victim blaming because even if lyanna willingly went and was cool with being with rhaegar the whole time and was completely in love with him SHES STILL 16. and before you say it’s normal in the asoiaf universe it doesn’t change the fact she’s 16 and can’t make executive decisions like this.

My understanding of Jason Todd's age;

Jason dies when he's 15, 4 months before his 16th birthday. He is dead for any number of time; it doesn't count towards his age.

He's resurrected; he is in a coma for 1 year, then catatonic for another. He is then put into a Lazarus Pit. (These 2 years are practically useless, as he doesn't remember them and they contribute very little to the story. They could be condensed to 2 months and it would change basically nothing.)

He trains for about a year. You can then give him 1-12 months of prep and planning time before his debut as the Red Hood, and the story of UT(R)H, at which point he would be mentally 16-17, physically 18-19, and it would be (--) years after his birth.
