Hello, everyone! Welcome to my blog!

As outlined here, my New Year’s Resolution for 2024 was to do something for my art every day. Whether writing, drawing, watching/studying, exploring or reading—I’d do something to sharpen my artistic focus daily.

As the year has gone by, I’ve documented some of the process on Tumblr. The tag “#Fiona’s Art Journal” has both reflections and artistic works, and “#Poetry” has an index of poems. This post is an index, and I’ll update it with hyperlinks to journals, art posts, and other favs.

NB: Aside from theatre and art posts, much of this blog is fandom posting about whatever (usually queer) media has most recently captured my interest. You can track various Strange New Worlds, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Supergirl and House of the Dragon rotations (to name a few), along with other shows/movies on my list. I will probably spend the rest of 2024 crying about Agatha All Along (as WandaVision is an all-time favorite media & I’ve waited 2 years, since the night before I graduated undergrad, for Jac Schaeffer to fix this mess). I appreciate your understanding during this time, lol.

Venus & Satan

Connection with Satan/Lucifer

In the Book of Isaiah, chapter 14, the king of Babylon is condemned in a prophetic vision by the prophet Isaiah and is called הֵילֵל בֶּן-שָׁחַר (Helel ben Shachar, Hebrew for "shining one, son of the morning"), who is addressed as הילל בן שחר (Hêlêl ben Šāḥar), The title "Hêlêl ben Šāḥar" refers to the planet Venus as the morning star, and that is how the Hebrew word is usually interpreted.

This passage was the origin of the later belief that Satan was a fallen angel, who could also be referred to as "Lucifer".

However, the translation of הֵילֵל as "Lucifer" has been abandoned in modern English translations of Isaiah 14:12.

An association of Isaiah 14:12–18 with a personification of evil, called the devil, developed outside of mainstream Rabbinic Judaism in pseudepigrapha and Christian writings, particularly with the apocalypses.

The metaphor of the morning star that Isaiah 14:12 applied to a king of Babylon gave rise to the general use of the Latin word for "morning star", capitalized, as the original name of the devil before his fall from grace, linking Isaiah 14:12 with Luke 10 ("I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven") and interpreting the passage in Isaiah as an allegory of Satan's fall from heaven.

Astronomy

Venus is the third-brightest object in the sky and the most prominent planet.

The third smallest planet in the Solar System, Venus is a terrestrial planet and is sometimes called Earth's "sister planet" because of their similar size, mass, proximity to the Sun, and bulk composition.

Venus is shrouded by an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid, preventing its surface from being seen from Earth in light.

Venus has an extremely dense atmosphere composed of 96.5% carbon dioxide, 3.5% nitrogen—both exist as supercritical fluids at the planet's surface—and traces of other gases including sulfur dioxide.

The ground shows evidence of extensive volcanism, and the sulfur in the atmosphere may indicate that there have been recent eruptions.

The absence of evidence of lava flow accompanying any of the visible calderas remains an enigma.

The planet is bright enough to be seen in broad daylight, but is more easily visible when the Sun is low on the horizon or setting. As an inferior planet, it always lies within about 47° of the Sun.

Venus "overtakes" Earth every 584 days as it orbits the Sun. As it does so, it changes from the "Evening Star", visible after sunset, to the "Morning Star", visible before sunrise.

As it orbits the Sun, Venus displays phases like those of the Moon in a telescopic view.

To the naked eye, Venus appears as a white point of light brighter than any other planet or star (apart from the Sun).

If looking with human eyes, Venus is white and yellow with a reddish and brown surface. Scientists generally agree to describe Venus as white and yellow.

To the world of antiquity, Venus/Copper stood as a personification of the divine feminine.

Venus/Copper was the planet/element that represented aspects of feminine beauty, love, lust, artistic creativity, affection, fertility, and balanced thinking.

In magic, Venus/Copper is used to promote love, sensuality, friendship, positive relationships, fruitful negations, and peace.

To the alchemist, Venus/Copper represents the love and compassion needed to become a well-rounded individual. It is the balanced psychological energy of Venus/Copper that allows the alchemist to evaluate experiences through one’s inner eye and bring those powerful insights into conscience awareness.

Culture

Dante Alighieri associated Venus with the liberal art of rhetoric.

The Venus symbol, ♀, consists of a circle with a small cross below it. It has been interpreted as a depiction of the hand-mirror of the goddess, which may also explain Venus's association with the planetary metal copper, as mirrors in antiquity were made of polished copper (alloy), though this is not certain.

In botany and biology, the symbol for Venus is used to represent the female sex, alongside the symbol for Mars representing the male sex, following a convention introduced by Linnaeus in the 1750s.

Arising from the biological convention, the symbol also came to be used in sociological contexts to represent women or femininity.

The discovery in the modern era that Venus was a distant world covered in impenetrable cloud cover gave science fiction writers free rein to speculate on conditions at its surface; all the more so when early observations showed that not only was it similar in size to Earth, it possessed a substantial atmosphere. Closer to the Sun than Earth, the planet was frequently depicted as warmer, but still habitable by humans. The genre reached its peak between the 1930s and 1950s, at a time when science had revealed some aspects of Venus, but not yet the harsh reality of its surface conditions.

Not for real.” The guy shrugged. “Sure, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care.” Suddenly, Bruce felt like his chest was caving in. He didn’t want anyone to care, not about him. Haven’t done a personal vent in a while, but...here goes.

Content Warning for transphobic parents, transphobic laws in the USA, mentions of unpleasant or bad news (via a song cover on TikTok), heavy emotions.

Read at your own risk (and if you do, some reassurance would be welcome too).

So....some backstory before I dive into why I'm upset right now:

- came out as genderfluid to mother in 2019 (now 5 years ago). she somehow interpreted this as “neither man nor woman” and exclusively used they/them (but she/her behind our back, including on the phone). we tried to correct her but she didn't listen at all. didn't know we were a system yet.

- updated her 3 months later that we were a man actually & wanted he/they. she didn't listen at all and kept assuming genderless ish neither man nor woman and only using they.

- updated her in 2021 (3 years ago), because we knew we were a system now (didn't tell her but informed our understanding of our gender better) and knew we were masc nonbinary (man ish). asked for he/him pronouns.

- outed us to our uncle (Uncle P) on the phone, very snarky “yeah they use they/them now”. Loudly yelled down the hall “he/him! if you're gonna out me, at least get it right!”

- continues to use they/she. reminded her in 2022 that we asked for he/him.

- been asking again, every 2-3 months this past year, gently encouraging and asking for effort. agreed to be patient with this big change.

- started testosterone May 2nd 2023 (approaching 10 months ago)

- gave them 3 different books on being transgender and supporting your trans child. they had resources at their fingertips.

- she continues to she/they us. she argues that we're not being patient enough when we protest.

- 6 months on T (November), finally told her we were on T because she noticed facial hair finally (“the women in our family don't have *that* much facial hair”). she was shocked it had been 6 months already. somehow hadn't noticed our voice drop an octave* or so.

*the musical term - this is about 8 notes on a solfege scale (do re mi fa so la ti do), which if you're not familiar with that, it lines up with piano keys (C-D-E-F-G-C-D-E on a major key) and is quite a jump.

- discussed with her how happy testosterone had made us. she knew we understood it to be the best decision we'd made for ourselves.

- Yule (Dec 21st), we bring our girlfriend over. she genders us correctly. both parents get visibly uncomfortable. we're shooed out the door after only two hours (usually 4-6 hour minimum event).

- gets service on secondary phone with new number that parents can't contact, preparing to go No Contact. uses secondary phone way more often. forgets to check original number for up to a week at a time. easier to not feel obligated to talk to parents.

- one month ago, finds out parents both knew we had bipolar. we had finally gotten meds (lamotrigine (medication name) / Lamictal (name brand)), they helped a lot, so we told father about that and he said “oh we knew”. he doesn't explain.

- asks mother when they first realized, why they didn't tell me, & what other mental illnesses or neurodivergent traits they noticed & didn't mention.

- mother says they specifically called it bipolar 2 years ago (2022) and that she thought they discussed it in front of me (father says they did not, & just didn't want to “force a label” on me). also tells me she knew we were ADHD in fourth grade, 9 to 10 years old (diagnosed professionally at 16), and also knew at the same time we had an anxiety disorder but she assumed it would be cured by forcing us into Gendered Scouts and trying to “just build self confidence”.

- also admits that she noticed in high school that we were trans, but she phrases it as “you suddenly started caring about being perceived female because the boys were flirting immaturely, and you just needed self defense classes and self confidence”.

- realizes she hasn't changed that very misinformed view of our transgender realization journey (said the same thing when we came out 5 years ago). upset, but decides to ghost her for 4 or 5 days instead of saying something. realizes we definitely need to go No Contact.

& then, yesterday / last night:

- sends TikTok video to her (this one:)

- is seeking reassurance & comfort, or at least to laugh together about it.

- she replies with her usual dismissive line to avoid accountability, “well, if everyone picked a small thing at a local level, we could affect change”. true fact, but only brought up to dismiss emotions and avoid accountability.

- gets angry, because feeling hurt.

- sends her several recent (last two years) transphobic laws (including Texas trying to label parents who support their trans kids’ social transition as “abusive” and place trans kids with families that will “convert” them; including bathroom bans, sports bans, drag bans; including West Virginia very recently actually trying to outlaw trans people from public life entirely). it's a lot of text and screenshots of the news.

- “This is about *me*, mom. This is my life. This is MY life, and my friends’, and my girlfriends’ and their girlfriends’*, and any adult who has ever supported me. We're long overdue for a full-scale revolution.”

*we're polyam, have 2 gfs and they have a lil polycule with 2 or 3 others

- follows up with a text that's more personal, “on a more personal note”, about her lack of support and her never even once using he/him or our given name.

- specifically says “when you don't even make an effort, I feel unloved, unseen, unwanted, and unheard”

- also says “I am in pain. I am your son.”

- ends message with heavy emotional line “Learn to love me, or at least tell me you can't and I'll find a parent who will.” ((insinuating no contact))

- tempted to delete, hesitates. hits send on a message we'd normally never send. too firm of a boundary, must be a threat, bad ultimatum.

- feels like a bad son, bad person, etc.

- expects her to lash out. expects several attempts to call, or many angry texts, or at best to be ghosted / left on read for a week (the way she did when we admitted we feel uncomfortable during family gatherings & wanted to bring gf). expects her to tell father & cut off our car insurance and all remaining (admittedly pitiful/pathetic) financial support.

- panics, turns phone she can contact completely off.

- cue today.

- goes to appointment with employment specialist, prepares to have them talk to new job about accommodations as soon as this job sees that we're worth keeping. specialist says am easy to work with because I already know what accommodations I need and what I need in a supportive workplace. calls me “very capable”. feels a little better.

- leaves appointment. anxiety builds again.

- gets home (~10:30a)

- terrified to turn phone back on. still haven't (12p).

....It's been one heck of a day and a half. I'm reeling with how bold that boundary was and how it's been a long time coming but I still feel “mean” and like I'm “a bad son” for letting on how hurt I actually feel.

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite is sending down tantalizing views of Earth’s water, including a global composite of sea surface heights. The satellite collected the data visualized above during SWOT’s first full 21-day science orbit, which it completed between July 26 and Aug. 16. SWOT is measuring the height of nearly all water on Earth’s surface, providing one of the most detailed, comprehensive views yet of the planet’s oceans and freshwater lakes and rivers. The satellite is a collaboration between NASA and the French space agency, CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales). The animation shows sea surface height anomalies around the world: Red and orange indicate ocean heights that were higher than the global mean sea surface height, while blue represents heights lower than the mean. Sea level differences can highlight ocean currents, like the Gulf Stream coming off the U.S. East Coast or the Kuroshio current off the east coast of Japan. Sea surface height can also indicate regions of relatively warmer water – like the eastern part of the equatorial Pacific Ocean during an El Niño – because water expands as it warms. The SWOT science team made the measurements using the groundbreaking Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn) instrument. With two antennas spread 33 feet (10 meters) apart on a boom, KaRIn produces a pair of data swaths (tracks visible in the animation) as it circles the globe, bouncing radar pulses off the water’s surface to collect surface-height measurements. “The detail that SWOT is sending back on sea levels around the world is incredible,” said Parag Vaze, SWOT project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “The data will advance research into the effects of climate change and help communities around the world better prepare for a warming world.” More About the Mission Launched on Dec. 16, 2022, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in central California, SWOT is now in its operations phase, collecting data that will be used for research and other purposes. SWOT was jointly developed by NASA and CNES, with contributions from CSA (Canadian Space Agency) and the UK Space Agency. JPL, which is managed for the agency by Caltech in Pasadena, California, leads the U.S. component of the project. The People of Svalbard's Dominant Worldview

When visiting the northmost town in the entire world, you will also stumble upon a single small Christian church within the town of Longyearbyen that was built in 1921. Although 90% of the 2,800 residents residing within this town are Christian (Lutheran), this church acts as an important role within the community as a meeting place and venue for various religious services and culture gatherings no matter the denomination or religion [1]. Because of this, the people of Svalbard tend to practice religious tolerance throughout their small community, even though their population tends to be fairly homogeneous within the Lutheran Christianity branch. Their small church is open 24/7 to the public and is looked at as “A bridge builder for a divided community.” Along with regular religious services, the church offers an open community space. It has a kitchen that is used for events, and a room that is also used for musical productions, board-game nights, and meetings [1].

Since the majority of the country follow the Lutheran branch of Christianity, they believe that Jesus Christ is the world’s savior from sin, death, and the power of evil. They follow Jesus Christ’s word of the Bible as well as the Holy scriptures as a guiding rule. Along with that, their religion also believes that men and women should have equal status and importance before God [4]. The Lutheran church is known to have more moderate to liberal views within the Christianity religion. The ethics within the church have been described as centering on faith active in love, which means that the believer makes moral choices in freedom, without present rules and laws [2]. Lutherans do not believe in any sort of earthly millennial kingdom of Christ. Once somebody passes away, the souls of Christians are immediately taken into the presence of Jesus, where they await the second coming of Jesus on the last day. Both burial and cremation are acceptable ways for the Lutheran faith to lay to rest [4]. Although unfortunately for Svalbard, as of 1950 nobody can be buried within the small cemetery that is within the town of Longyearbyen since the soil is almost always frozen and bodies do not decompose on the island from the cold. This brings worries that since the bodies cannot decompose, they may contain preserved viruses that killed the bodies that lay within the cemetery. If someone dies, they must be buried in Norway or cremated [3].
