Lore details I've noticed: Farewell Rayashki event

As always that's mostly Russian/USSR/Slavic stuff and some translations, feel free to add anything. I've also made a post about Silver Knot lore details

Obviosly, spoiler warning

Alenka - a USSR chocolate type produced since 1965, they are quite soft and sweet and still popular among kids and adults

The playground is quite typical for the time period. The drawings and sunflowers might be Vila’s and kids’ work. It’s not very clear if the graffiti is made by someone inspired by hip-hop culture or is August’s failed attempt at scribbling out his name, judging by “А” and “Г” as 1st and 3rd letters. The only thing I’d add here is more scraped parts recycled into playground constructions

Ijirak, Kikituk, Qiqirn - creatures from Inuit folklore (as far as I know they are not known in native Siberian folklore). I haven’t found information about Hoituk

The Russian word for “most” means “best” in the phrase “the most “most”” (“самый-самый”)

“It was only by luck that we found the runium. For over 60 years, people here have worked together to make it what it is now” - Vila. If the events happen in 60s-80s (judging by the overall vibe), than the last time reverse was at 1977 and Rayashki started to grow from a village to a town at 1917 or later. It means the town exported runium for all the Soviet years.

Most of the sighs say “For Better Future”, “Welcome to Rayashki” and “Welcome Zeno’s Military Institute”

The room in which Windsong stays is Soviet af. There are an old TV with a lens, cool bookshelf and tiles that surprised me. They’re common for public and liminal spaces but not so much for the living ones. Maybe they’re chosen because they endure harsh Artic climate better that wood or linoleum

EDIT: the TV looks like KVN-49 model, produced in 1949—1962

“It must be Kikituk! But their closest habitat should be Kong Kalrs Land, hundreds of kilometres away”. Kong Karls Land - a group of island of Svalbard archipelago, Norway. As @vingler-mirror point out in their post, Rayashki is likely based on Pyramiden town owned by USSR on the same archipelago

Poneva/ponyova - an element of Russian (Eastern Slavic?) female clothing worn on top of the main skirt of the dress. I believe there was either a mistranslation in Needles and Loaves message where Raisa said “poneva dress”, either she meant the whole outfit

Samodiva - Their name is feminine and can be roughly translated as “self-wonder”, but that’s another word for vila the creature from Western and Southern Slavic mythology similar to Eastern Slavic rusalka/mavka

Other stuff I’ve noticed:

The town seems to have a big arcanist population, if not most of them are arcanists. An arcanist right is applicable to them and all Vila’s known students are arcanists (if the kids are arcanists, their parents and grandparents are arcanists too)

The people of Rayashki seem to come from different places, and it makes sense with Pyramiden's history (EDIT: the workers were mostly from a western region of Ukraine). Pasono’s first name seems to be obscure and I’ve found only a surname mostly known in America. Patrik’s name is more popular name in other countries, and it make me to believe his ancestors might be foreigners. Bogina’s name comes from Southern Slavic languages

Rayashki is very communistic compared to the rest of USSR. Maybe it’s the town’s history, citizens’ temperament, small town’s size, seclusion and big self sufficiency combined. EDIT: the town's athmosphere conctasts with the period of USSR where people start feel more positive about the world around and capitalism with it

In all honesty, I've always had the feelings that giving gifts would be Steve's love language right alongside physical touch, and I'm happy to say I could highlight both of these in this fic! It's been almost five years since you joined the Avengers, and during that time, you have built an inseparable bond with each of them. However, none of them are as strong as your one with Steve.

From the moment you two laid eyes on one another, there was an unspoken, undeniable connection, and this was very obvious to everyone except the two of you.

Neither of you wanted to admit it, but your love for one another goes deeper than just friends. You don't want to admit it, though, because you're both scared to lose your friendship and risk your position as an Avenger.

But lately, Nat has noticed that something's been off with Steve, and after the last mission all three of you went on together, she decides to go and see what's going on with him.

''You still haven't told her how you feel, have you?'' she asks outright. Steve snaps his head towards Nat, and a bright red flush creeps over his face, neck, and chest out of pure embarrassment.

''Would you shut up?!'' he hisses to her, but she's not letting up.

''No, Steve, I will not shut up. We were almost killed because you can't seem to keep your head on straight every time she's near, and I'm sick of it. I'm not dying over a silly crush,'' she spits the words at him.

''S not a silly crush,'' Steve says with a pout like a small boy, but Nat isn't having any of it.

''Either tell her how you feel, or I will do it because I am sick of it, Rogers. I'm not putting my life on the line for you two if this continues. We both know she won't come onto you because you're her superior; if you want anything to change, you know just as well as I do that it will have to come from you.''

Nat's dangerously close to Steve now, and even though he's towering over her, he's impressed and a little afraid of the former Russian spy.

''Fine,'' he grits out through his teeth. ''But I'm going to need help.''

And with that, Steve and Nat are developing a plan that will surely blow you away. It will require some planning on Steve's part, but he's sure you will love it.

Over the next month, he is busy preparing to buy 24 small gifts ranging from books he's heard you talk about countless times to some make-up items you love, and from your favorite sweets to some baking supplies since you love to bake in your time off.

Once he has everything ready, he spends most of his time wrapping all the presents to the best of his abilities, and it's fair to say he tried his hardest, but wrapping isn't one of his strong suits.

Once December 1st hits, Steve is taking you out for lunch, which will be the perfect moment to give you your first present. It's small, but Steve wanted to start with something representing your friendship.

''I have something for you,'' Steve says just after the waiter leaves to take your lunch orders; he grabs the square box from his pocket and hands it to you.

''Really? You didn't have to do that!'' you say with a shy smile, but you also know that giving gifts is one of Steve's love languages, along with physical touch.

You tear the wrapping paper off, and it reveals a square, flat box, and it instantly piques your curiosity.

When you lift the lid off the box, it reveals a necklace with a small copy of his shield, making you chuckle when you look at it.

''Did you take me out to lunch to give me this? You could have just given this to me at the Compound, you know?'' but Steve shrugs in response.

''I wanted to give this to you without everyone being on our case since this means a lot to me.'' The words ''just like you'' were unspoken between you.

You pick up the necklace to enjoy it from every angle, and when you look at the back, you find an inscription on the back of the shield. In small letters you recognize as his handwriting, it says 'Forever yours.' The words that have come to mean so much for both of you.

''Now I feel bad I don't have anything for you,'' you say with a slight pout, clutching the necklace to your chest as you fight off the tears.

''I thought about that, and I found the perfect solution,'' he tells you as he fishes his dog tags from his shirt, showing that there are now three instead of the usual two.

He takes them off his neck and hands them to you, and you look at the new addition, which has the same inscription as yours, but instead of his handwriting, you see yours.

Every last word you want to say has officially left your brain, and instead, you let the tears you were fighting earlier escape, though Steve quickly wipes them away.

''Hey, are you okay?'' he asks, and you nod as you let out a breathy chuckle, trying to compose yourself as you're holding the metal of both your necklace and Steve's tags.

''Thank you,'' you whisper to him before handing back his tags and putting the necklace back in its box, not wanting to lose it or break it. You'll save it for a special moment, for the right moment.

The rest of the days, you are away on a mission, and Steve is a little upset that he can't give you your presents in person, so instead, he decides to leave them in your room, one present for every day that you're gone.

Wrapped books go on your bookshelf, wrapped pieces of make-up go into your bathroom, wrapped baking supplies go on your desk, and the biggest one, for December 24th, goes on your bed.

It's nearly 3 AM on Christmas Day when you arrive back at the Compound utterly exhausted from your mission, but before you can let yourself fall onto your bed, you find a present on your mattress, with a little note attached.

Merry Christmas

He wanted to give it to you in person yesterday evening, but sadly, you couldn't make it, much to Steve's dismay. However, that didn't stop him from giving it to you.

''Oh, Steve...'' you sigh softly as you sit on the bed where your present was. The note is put to the side, and you turn over the item in your hands so you can carefully take the wrapping paper off.

It lands on the floor without a single sound, and when you turn over the item, you can finally see it's a photo album. On the front is a photo with you and all the other Avengers from the first day you were officially part of the team.

The book is made from sturdy, red leather, and when you open it, you see lots of photos, either selfies from you and Steve, but also more candid photos from you when you're baking, a few of Steve and other Avengers, but there's one page blank.

The pages have little stories written; the last one says ''Forever yours'', but no photo. You carefully close the book and put it together with the note before getting up, not bothering to change out of your tactical gear before making your way to Steve's room.

With a soft knock, you patiently wait for him to open the door, and you don't have to wait long. Steve waited for your arrival while he patiently drew in his room, listening to music from the 40s.

As soon as he opens the door, you fling your arms around his waist, and your cheek is pressed against his chest as you hold him tight, not needing to say a single word. He knows you've found the photo album.

''Steve-'' is all you can say before he stops you.

''Go out to dinner with me tonight, please. I'll make this Christmas one never to forget,'' he tells you, and you nod in response. He places a soft, lingering kiss on your forehead, his hands on your cheeks.

He wants to kiss you the way you deserve, love you the way you should be loved, and touch you the way he craves to touch you. But he has to have more patience because, hopefully, this will all change after dinner.

''Okay,'' you whisper before pulling away and giving him a reassuring smile. With that, you return to your room and get ready to catch up on some much-needed sleep.

Steve has told you to be ready at 19:00 so you can make it to your reservation at 19:30, though he didn't tell you where you would be going.

You opted for a blue velvet dress with a waterfall neckline, white heels, and silver jewelry. Your hair is put in an elegant bun, and your make-up is simple because you don't want to take away from the beauty of the dress.

To finish the entire look, you put on the necklace Steve gave you before your mission, and the outfit is complete.

Precisely on time, you're done, and Steve is at your door, ready to pick you up for dinner, and the butterflies in your stomach are going wild.

You open your door and see Steve in a black suit, a crisp white shirt underneath, and the top three buttons undone. His blond hair is styled beautifully, and he looks like an angel.

With a lopsided grin, he takes in your appearance, and you can't help but flush a little under his gaze as he takes in your outfit. His eyes stop at the necklace, and you're glad you saved it for the right moment.

''Wow...'' he whispers as he extends his hand to guide you to the car, ready for your dinner reservation. The other Avengers are having a Christmas dinner together, and after lots of compliments on your outfit, you're finally ready to go.

''Have fun, you two! And don't come home before midnight!'' Nat jokes, and you can't help but laugh loud at her comment. That is when it finally clicks: this is all her doing.

He has opted to take you to a beautiful Italian-style restaurant since pasta is one of your favorite dishes, and you always enjoy the atmosphere with the soft music in the background.

''Thank you for taking me here tonight, Steve. This is already the most amazing Christmas I have ever had in my entire life,'' you tell him, and that's when the nerves boil up in Steve's stomach.

''I'm glad you agreed to come here with me tonight because I've wanted to tell you something, which I probably should have told you ages ago,'' he starts, reaching for your hands.

You put them in his and you look up at him curiously, and you know where this is heading, your answer ready to go once the last word leaves his mouth.

''I'm in love with you and have been for as long as I can remember. The connection I feel with you is worth more than anything in this world, and I can't keep it to myself any longer. So I want to ask you to be my girlfriend if you have me.''

''Yes, Steve. Nothing in this world would make me happier than to be your girlfriend,'' you say, and Steve stands up, pulling you with him so he can finally kiss you the way you deserve, love you the way you should be loved, and touch you the way he craves to touch you.

''And I'm in love with you too, Steve. I'm glad Nat finally talked some sense into you,'' you tell him with a chuckle before giving him one more peck on his lips.

That night, you and Steve had a beautiful photo taken in front of a Christmas tree, and of course, it had to be one where you were kissing. This will be the perfect addition to the photo album because it will show the beginning of the rest of your lives together.

List of russian lies in the UN or during diplomatic speeches:

1. In January-February of 2022 russia claimed in the UN that they will not invade Ukraine, that they have no plans to invade Ukraine, and evidence of upcoming invasion are lies made by the US or others.

End of the same month russia launched a full-scale invasion.

2. Russia claimed in the UN that the reason they attacked Ukraine was to fight some "local nazis" and that they are indeed good guys fighting Ukrainian hatred. That, however, does not explain why: a) russia opposed the grain deal until Turkey threatened to make it work one way or the other, showing their intention to starve hundreds of millions of people in neutral countries for no reason whatsoever, b) russia refused to allow UN or Red Cross etc to observe the conditions of POWs or to open humanitarian corridors for people to escape from Mariupol or other conflict zones, with thousands of witnesses reporting abductions, filtration camps, and shelling of retreating civilians, c) russia claimed to only want to protect local russian population, yet completely destroyed whole cities in majorly-russian-speaking Eastern Ukraine, like Mariupol (satellites showing mass graves), and bombing mainly civilian targets - schools, hospitals, theatres, a shopping mall during peak hours, a train station where people waited for evacuation, apartment buildings, etc. Currently we can see that there is no effort on the russian-controlled side of Dnipro river to help people in flooded areas, with videos and citizen testimonies reporting shelling of all disaster aid attempts, d) russia claimed that they only hate the "nazi" Ukrainian government, yet they openly shelled Ukrainian power grids during winter, for no other reason than to leave innocent civilians with no gas or electricity.

3. Russian state TV, public figures like Solovyov, former President and Prime Minister as well as head of security council of russia Medvedev openly stated either on national TV or in their social media pages that they want to "exterminate" Ukrainians. That the whole country should not exist, that Ukrainian language is fake, etc etc. This is genocidal speech and it is not limited to Ukraine either. The Baltic States, Poland, etc also received such claims - that they "do not exist" that they "belong to russia" or that they "should be invaded". Makes it very obvious who the imperialistic, colonist aggressor actually is. Medvedev also repeatedly threatened Western European countries with missile or even nuclear attack, yet they claim to only be "defending themselves".

4. Lavrov got laughed at during a summit in India for claiming that "russia was invaded by Ukraine". Do I even need to explain why this is a lie? If I do, check 1st point again. Or just turn on your brain.

5. Then there's more sci-fi nutjobby official russian claims (or lies) about - bioweapons in Ukraine, pidgeons carrying disease or weapons to russia, Ukraine having some super-soldiers, or even dark magic, as indicated by russian Ministry of Defense changing the goal of their "special military operation" from "denazification" to "desatanization".

So, knowing all of this, why the fuck would you believe ANYTHING they say? Especially about the destruction of dam?

Russia has repeatedly shown aggressive attitude towards neighbouring countries, claimed their wish to occupy them, russian officials called for extermination of whole nationalities, and both President putin and Belova have enough evidence against them for ICC to issue a warrant for them for GENOCIDE AND WAR CRIMES.

If you still believe in russia, despite anything they themselves say, you're either a genocide-supporter or unbelievably stupid.

Headcannon that a lot of the Orphanage staff were people displaced from the Great war.

People who weren't originally from Japan who found a place working at the Orphanage because of the Headmaster.

He fought with them and gave them a job, a home.

And maybe that's why they turned a blind eye to his methods, or even why they understood them and followed them.

Anyway, this results in Atsushi being multilingual.

As while the staff taught Japanese, a lot of them would speak in their own native languages.

Especially when they were angry, which they usually were. And so the kids learned to picked up on it fast.

You couldn't use "I didn't understand" as an excuse.

It just meant you were ignoring orders.

A lot of the books were ones the staff had owned as kids.

Given they hadn't had the budget for anything more.

And Atsushi spent hours pouring over pages and figuring out details and words.

Atsushi didn't realise that most people don't know more than one language.

For him it was the norm, a necessity, a means of survival.

Because the staff would change their language like shades on a chameleon, and if you got caught out you'd be punished.

He never bought it up, he hadn't needed to given everyone at the Agency spoke Japanese.

So did he.

Sometimes he listen to music on headphones from other languages.

Because it was werid speaking and listening to one language all the time.

Though Atsushi makes an effort to look more into the languages he's learned.

Because he's afraid of losing another part of himself. Esspecially after everything that happens in Dead Apple.

There are clues here and there.

Like how Atsushi watches soaps in his spare time.

Ones his old matrons would watch when they were supposed to be watching him.

Kyouka finds them intresting and sometimes watches them with him.

She doesn't notice that Atsushi only turns on subtitles when she's watching.

However no one knew until one time Fyodor made a mistake with his Japanese.

Dazai laughed at him, Fyodor cursed at him in Russian. And Atsushi, absolutely done with all this man's bullshit.

Proceeded to swear at him in Russian. Full on, rip this man to shreds, curse out his entire bloodline.

Fyodor was completely speechless, as was everyone else.

Dazai looks at Atsushi with the most devious look in the world. "Soo... Atsushi, mind sharing that with the class?"

Atsushi is confused, realised no one else knows what he said and is so embarrassed.

"You know Russian?!"

"You... Don't?"

Eventually, Atsushi quietly tells Dazai what he said.

Dazai falls onto the ground rolling around laughing his ass off.

"Atsushi I have never been more proud of you than I am now."

Hello! I meant to get this done around the year anniversary of the server, but that ultimately didn't end up happening, so we have it now about a week late-- considering the growth rate for the fandom, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Before we get into it, I want to say that the last year of QSMP fandom has been amazing. There's been a lot to deal with, but there's also been plenty of amazing fanworks, and I really do want to celebrate that along with the multilingual nature of the fandom.

Fun tidbits/disclaimers to start:

QSMP has 8739 works as of today!! That's about 6x as many works as it had in June of 2023, when I started doing these stats.

AO3 has 12,750,000 total works as of today (this is a rough estimate that displays on the front page when you're logged out, not an exact number).

There's a few more languages since my last update, including new languages on the server!

I've mentioned my methodology on previous stats posts, but just as a reminder, I gather this data manually by filtering by language within the QSMP tag. On occasion I miss a new language, but on the whole the significant numbers should be accurate.

The last nine languages, Latin, Esperanto, Malaysian Malay, Filipino, Vietnamese, Turkish, Danish, Finnish, and Swedish, all have 1 work and 0.01% of total works respectively.

Observations:

English has maintained 80% or above for the last year; the current percentage (83.71%) is the highest it's been at that I've observed. Spanish has been at a slight decline since the start of the server, with its high happening in June (again, from my observations) at 17.73% and the current percentage (10.22%) being the lowest. This could be attributed in part to a steady decrease of active Spanish speaking members over the course of the server but I wouldn't want to assign causation. Brazilian Portuguese works have stayed around 5% since December, French is at 0.5%. Korean is at 0, which isn't surprising to me; Korean has low numbers on AO3, and I assume most Korean speakers use other fanfiction websites. German is at 2 works, which I believe have been there for a bit (as in, since before Hugo was added).

European Portuguese obviously makes sense to be on here, as do Russian and Chinese (two of the most used languages on AO3 aside from English), and their numbers don't surprise me-- they haven't changed much over the course of the server's history. The other one-work languages are interesting, and to me demonstrate the growth of the server & fandom along with the way the fandom incentivizes and encourages creating fanworks in one's native language(s).

To repeat, AO3 has 12,750,000 total works across the site as of today.

English has 11,180,000 works and 87.69% of total works in QSMP.

Spanish has 154,900 works and 1.21% of total works.

Brazilian Portuguese has 35,980 works and 0.28% of total works.

French has 61,620 works and 0.48% of total works.

Korean has 2,957 works and 0.02% of total works.

German has 26,170 works and 0.21% of total works.

Russian has 266,200 works and 2.09% of total works.

European Portuguese has 1,150 works and 0.01 % of total works.

Mandarin has 766,200 works and 6.01% of total works.

Polish has 18,270 works and 0.14% of total works.

Latin, Esperanto, Malaysian Malay, and Danish have 95, 125, 116, and 344 works respectively and 0.00% of total works.

Filipino has 9,665 works and 0.08% of total works.

Vietnamese has 8,354 works and 0.07% of total works.

Turkish has 3,400 works and 0.03% of total works.

Finnish has 2386 works and 0.02% of total works.

Swedish has 1,039 works and 0.01% of total works.

Observations:

The only changes I see here from June that I find interesting are that English has gone down over a percentage since last year-- I'm not a statistician, so I'm not sure if it's a super significant amount of change, but since English is by far the most tagged language on the site, I think any notable change is interesting. Mandarin is up slightly, but again, I'm not sure how to go about measuring what is a significant amount of change. Otherwise there's not a ton of changes I've seen over the last year, at least not in regards to the languages I've been tracking.

Biggest thing of note here is just the amount of languages-- we've gone from eight tagged languages to 19 tagged languages, more than doubling the number of languages from June. Super impressive! I hope we continue to see more and more languages used in fanworks.

Brief personal opinions time

In previous stats posts, I talked about reasons as to why these languages break down like this and what makes people interested in various characters. I think those points are all still pretty true, particularly the ones about interest in certain characters because of roleplay skill and centrality to the narrative, along with the usual reasons people like certain MCRP characters (hot creator, existing fondness from prior series, etc.) but I think the ways the server has changed and the characters people have latched onto as time has gone on have shifted somewhat, which is interesting to me.

This is less related to AO3 numbers and more the general fandom, but it's interesting to me to experience the fandom on Tumblr, Twitter, and AO3, where the language usages and focus on certain characters differs so much across platforms. We've all talked about this before, but the lack of an autotranslation feature on here really prevents a lot of multilingualism, whereas I've noticed a decent amount of people reading fic in various languages, probably bc the level of interactivity is very different on AO3 versus here.

If I have any more interesting analysis/theories/opinions/etc. I'll rb with those.

Final disclaimers:

Fics often get deleted from the archive for a myriad of reasons, and in the last several months there have been a lot of things that could and have led to works being deleted. This means both the growth rate for the fandom (which I'm not numerically tracking but do keep an eye on more casually) as well as these specific stats are impacted by these deletions. Not to get on my soapbox, but as someone who finds fandom history and archiving really important, I want to encourage people to orphan works rather than delete them. Here is the AO3 FAQ section on orphaning.

Languages are manually tagged by users; they are not double checked by the archive nor by me (I am not looking through almost nine thousand fics to check if the language tagged is actually accurate). Sometimes people tag the wrong language for various reasons, I can't do anything about this and on the whole most works are tagged correctly.

People sometimes tag for the wrong fandom, either on purpose or by accident, or works are wrangled into QSMP even though they don't necessarily involve the server. Wranglers make decisions based off usage, but if you genuinely feel there is some error in how something is wrangled, you can make a polite request for it to be fixed with Support and Feedback.

I am a volunteer tag wrangler for AO3; this does not give me any extra data-gathering capabilities nor do I agree with all actions/statements the org makes. I am disclosing this, and always disclose this, to make sure people are aware of any bias I may have. This is not free reign to harass me or any other wranglers who disclose their volunteer work.

If I did any math wrong, please politely let me know and I will fix the data. Again, I am not a statistician nor particularly talented at math, I'm just a nerd about languages and I enjoy looking at stats. Also sometimes people post or delete works while I'm in the middle of doing stats (this has happened, without fail, every time I've done these), so the numbers are inevitably a little off. I've learned to live with it.

Worth mentioning just because I didn’t enjoy it, doesn’t mean you’ll hate it!

Can’t speak much for biomed, but looking back on my joint degree it was a recipe for disaster and burnout. Perfectly fine if I’d come from a wealthy family and didn’t need to be concerned about bills, place to live etc but I worked my entire way through uni and missed out on a lot.

The fact people could go study at the library on Saturday/Sunday morning and then have the rest of their day was genuinely alien to me until a few months ago when I was in Edinburgh and went for a walk and saw it.

I always worked a full day at weekends and throughout the week after classes, I had next to no time. My lecturers didn’t appreciate I had to work to pay rent and eat.

Chinese department annoyed me because it didn’t focus on what I was interested in, think we had one small module focused on language for business. Meanwhile I was doing full courses on Chinese silent film for the early 1900s - not as riveting as it sounded.

Russian department was a joke. It allowed Russian native speakers to take it (something the Chinese department banned) and their course was marketed to complete beginners. So even the memories of my earliest 1st year classes was of the lecturers neglecting beginners to have full fledged conversations with the Russian students who literally went to their homes in Moscow and St Petersburg over Christmas break and summer.

At a more general level, the gulf between super rich students and working class students were huge. I was the only working class Scottish person in my later courses, and dealing with certain wealthy students was a nightmare. They live on a different planet.

Left feeling very disillusioned with the whole experience as you can probably tell if you’ve read this far.

She still fights to survive. Both against the room and herself, but Ghost now helps her once he first found her attempting to end herself.
