Day 20: Book you’ve read the most number of times

I am going to break the rules here and not use the book I have read the most number of times, but the series I have read the most times. It is actually quite a fun story about how I came across these books. They were recommended to me by one of my coworkers back in 2017 or 18. I started reading the first book and I really disliked the first 7 chapters, so much so that I let my co-worker know and…

Okay as we started talking about Ben and Lettie's random pair up, I want to talk about how how hilariously out of place their main "love" moment were in the final of the book.

Without any hatred to the final itself, it's one of the best happy endings I've ever read, it's just this particular scene looks like it was written in the last second.

Wizard Suliman was at least a strong-minded as Lettie was. Lettie looked quite nervous as Suliman loomed craggily over her. "It seemed to be the Prince's memory I had of you and not my own at all," he said.

"That's quite all right," Lettie said bravely. "It was a mistake."

"But it wasn't!" protested Wizard Suliman. "Would you let me take you on as a pupil at least?" Lettie went fiery red at this and did not seem to know what to say.

First of all, Ben, dear, WHY are you starting conversation with "the Prince" and the fact that it was his memory? I mean, it is important, yes, but it also wasn't really worth mentioning as you both see each other for the first time, and she had a brief conversation with the Prince? Lettie is smart, she can connect two dots together.

(seriously, If you want to talk about Prince Justin talk about Prince Justin, there's no need to do randomly conversation with his mention.)

Second of all, again, what happened to "hello"? Or "sorry"? Or some kind of introducing of yourself? She knew Percival, yeah, but this is first time you see eachother, as, well, each other.

Ben, I love you dearly, but you clearly cannot start a conversation. That's the price you're paying for being a nerdy introvert in your thirties.

(Yes, starting the talk with your countryman by apologising for biting him is not the best possible option, either.)

Third of all, I think we all can agree the "at least a pupil" line didn't exits. It was delivered so rapidly and quicky, no one present could actually process whatever is going on here.

Let's all just sing my bestie Ben Sullivan for speaking club lessons, I think he's gonna be glad.

Today i made food for the week, got my chemistry textbook in the mail, and did a lot of bureaucratic stuff, as well as some math exercises with my friend online. I’ve known them for little time, but they’re absolutely wonderful.

5/30 days of productivity— What morning routine keeps you on track?

I do NOT function properly in the morning, so all the time consuming stuff like showering and the big meals are shifted towards the end of the day. In the morning i just sit in the kitchen drinking tea and eating fruits and nuts until i’m awake enough to get dressed and leave.

Day 19-20/30 days of productivity

I completed The Phantom of the Opera! It was quite enjoyable and there were plenty of scenes that made me chuckle. The difference between the book and the play is, to me, pretty big. But all the characters were far more fleshed out, which is to be expected. Also to celebrate the completion of that book, I saw this very cool hardcover of Dracula and couldn't resist adding it to my collection.

One thing you’d change about the Nibelungenlied

This is a minor thing, but I would change the name of Dankrât, the father of Kriemhild and her brothers (who is only mentioned once or twice in the Nibelugenlied). Everywhere else he’s called Gibich/Gybich/Gibica/Gjuki etc. With his children’s names being Gunther, Gernot, Giselher and Kriemhild/Grimhild – there is obviously a tradition in the family of alliterating names to G (which corresponds to the names of the historical Burgundian kings). The Nibelungenlied poet cannot simply break with this tradition like that! xD

The commentary of one of my Nibelungenlied editions (Deutscher Klassiker Verlag) states, that it's not clear, according to research, why the poet replaced the name (the name Gibeche is reintroduced in the manuscript k of the Nibelungenlied). I personally assume the name Dankrât might have been a reference to a patron or some figure in the poet’s environment.

But I will never accept it as my personal canon! xD

There is even a person named Gibeche in the Nibelungenlied, but he’s just some random knight at Etzel’s court.

i think all the books have their charm (but personal ranking, without much explanation, is below the cut), but if i'm forced to pick one, i'd have to say book 6. there are many things i like about this book, such as:

idia and ortho are featured heavily! to start their relationship has been endearing to me but i do like how there's this theme of "rebirth" going on. from what i've seen in books 6, 7, it seems almost like it's idia's fate to lose ortho. first he lost the real ortho, then he lost the humanoid ortho (once), and then in the dream world in book 7, the fact he broke out of the dream, seemingly, speaks to the fact he lost ortho there as well.

parallelism is chef's kiss - i dunno if this is because this book plays into "rebirth," but i love how we sort of get like "leave it to your big bro" twice (said in different tones because of the context), and like how idia makes a comparison between like heaven and the underworld at first, and then later it changes to heaven and a local park. the distance is getting a little smaller, even in baby steps!

we get a whole lore dump on like blot and grim?? excuse me but like what is up with him??

the dynamic between the characters is actually really well done. we get to see a lot of sides we don't normally see from them, especially when they split into smaller teams. for example, we'll probably never get to see jamil and leona interact again after this book. but i'm surprised they managed to work as well as they did, and dare i say, i think jamil especially needed this sort of interaction to help him understand himself. we even see him in the end of book 6 finally bossing kalim around a bit out of something other than him or his family getting threatened (if kalim gets hurt). that probably never would have happened if not for leona and his "counseling session."

and it was just nice to get to know the pomefiore group more and see vil, rook, and epel all acting more like brothers than an overbearing coach, his right-hand man and an apple like the first halfish of book 5. plus riddle and azul's bickering was like peak frenemy content who work very well together. i know they did work together in the prologue a little bit to catch grim, but seeing them struggle through the towers together in book 6 allows us to see them in a whole new light, and we even see them be vulnerable with each other. while reading them i feel even more they are fit to duo together in their dorm uniform cards. they are more close than they normally let on, i think.
