Legendary Monster in Pathfinder
Tumblr media
Legendary actions are, to put it plainly, one of the very few things I appreciate about D&D 5e. It's a great way for GMs to prevent their cool boss monster from being Action Economy'd to death. Legendary resistances are... less beloved, but I think in Pathfinder (a game positively ridded with save-or-dies and save-or-sucks) it provides a more interesting tactical gameplay than boss monsters simply being immune to petrification, paralysis, etc etc.
Additionally, I deliberately didn't make any of the legendary actions here do anything NEW, in contrast to 5e monsters. I, perhaps uncritically, assumed that these Bestiary 1 monsters didn't need new tools as much as they just needed more actions. Hey, did you know that Pathfinder 1e turns 15 years old in a month?
Legendary monsters are exceptionally powerful or important members of their kind; the blue dragon at the center of a web of mysteries, the sphinx guarding a legendary artifact, the vampire who rules an entire kingdom. Fights with them are meant to feel monumentous, and legendary monsters have a repertoire of tools that ensure that battles with them are drawn out and memorable.
Any being can be granted the legendary quality; they gain legendary resistances and legendary actions as seen below. Most legendary beings have a third option when spending legendary actions or modify their Strikes and Respositions; some monsters that tend towards the legendary have a specific recommended action, but a GM is free to modify these as they see fit.
Legendary Resistances
3/day, a legendary creature may choose to succeed on a saving throw without rolling. It makes this choice before rolling the save.
Additionally, these uses can be expended as a swift action on a legendary creature’s turn to remove any of the following conditions; blinded, deafened, entangled, paralyzed, or petrified.
Legendary Actions
At the start of a monster’s turn, it gains three uses of a legendary action. Additionally, a monster gains three legendary actions at the start of combat if it is not flat-footed. Legendary actions are taken at the end of any other character’s turn, be they player or non-player. Legendary actions can only be used on specific things. All legendary monsters have access to the two following legendary actions;
Strike
The monster makes a single attack against a single target.
Reposition
The monster moves up to 30ft using any of its movement type. It cannot move farther than its movement speed. This movement triggers attacks of opportunity, but grants the monster a +2 bonus to AC against such attacks.
Example Monsters
Aboleth
As a legendary action, an aboleth may use its Persistent Image, Mirage Arcana, or Veil spell-like abilities.
Kraken
When making a Strike legendary action, a kraken may attack with two tentacles against one or two targets, instead of making a single attack against a single target.
Lich
As a legendary action, a lich may cast any necromancy spell she knows or has prepared that have a casting time of 1 standard action and are level 3 or less
Gynosphinx
As a legendary action, a gynosphinx may use its Dispel Magic spell-like ability.
Androsphinx
As a legendary action, an androsphinx may cast any of its prepared Cleric spells that have a casting time of 1 standard action and are level 2 or less.
Unicorn
When using the Reposition legendary action, a unicorn does not trigger attacks of opportunity.

I wanted to reference the Tiny Jax AU by @smallpwbbles (I think I spelled it right pls correct me) in IOSAU by making him slowly get physically younger the longer he holds his breath. It’s kinda like the 5e dnd sphinx where it caps off at 1 year old in dragon age (I think that’s like 5 or 6 in human years idk) anyway I honestly love this AU and it’s a really creative idea so credit to @smallpwbbles for the original AU

Sphinx Race for dnd 5e that I made because there’s barely any good ones I can find out there. It comes with four subraces, based around the four main tropes that sphinxes tend to fit in, two mundane and two magical!
There’s the stoic Aegisphinx, devoted to Truth and Knowledge almost religiously. They make good watchers, guardians, and especially amazing paladins.
Then their counterpart, the mysterious and magical Curiosphinx, a creature with a profound penchant for curiosity and riddles, motivated primarily by whims and flights of fancy. They make excellent wizards, eccentric artificers, and collectors.
The Wild Sphinx is more mundane, staying close to their roots and fully utilizing their status as Apex Predators. They make great rangers and druids, as well as just about any form of martial class.
And in contrast, the Domestic Sphinx is the closest you can get to a regular person while still being a sphinx. They inherit small traits from each subrace, and even have a limited capacity for flight!
I made this primarily because, as anyone who follows my blog would know, I’m a sphinx. And I wanna play as a sphinx in dnd. So now i can :3

Hm I have an obnoxiously long list of ttrpg characters I've played over the years.
Zaldur: undead Redemption Paladin, once a cruel mercenary in life, now incredibly guilty for his past life and current undeath. VERY complicated story since he's my only character I played all the way to lvl 20.
Isaac: Spore Druid in a Bloodborne 5E thing. Scientist infected by the Beast Blood mutated parasitic fungus that is killing him. Mad scientist who loved experimenting with seeing what kind of strange fungus would grow from the beastly corpses. Ended up reincarnated as the first mushroom-person after dying in the final boss.
Isaac Cuil: Monster of the Week character. A corporate Agent supernatural investigator that was once accidentally killed then revived by a "Goddess". Works for an evil corporation and became a mole against it, eventually forming a counter organization to research and protect supernatural creatures from his bosses unknowingly. Eventually a disciple of the Goddess who killed him.
Rustbeard: Rust (spore) Druid Junkion in a Transformers game. Reformatted old man. Sort of a healer but also a (retired) mad scientist
Vask: Aberrant Sorcerer that was the guinea pig of a mad mage, sole survivor of the experiments that made him into an aberration-blooded psion. An experienced adventurer of some renown.
Joggin: Fathomless Warlock Halfling, Frostmaiden game. Once a petty thief in Neverwinter that was captured in a heist gone wrong. Shipped off to a prison in Icewind Dale but managed to escape and nearly drown, meeting his surprisingly benevolent Patron. (backstory predated the D&D movie by a few years)
Tham Loto: Psi-Warrior Fighter, Shadar-Kai, agender. Only used in oneshots but backstory of exile from Shadowfell and a desire to explore due to not having a home to return to.
Chimeratron: Beast Barbarian Transformer from same setting as Rustbeard, an amalgam of multiple beastformers, very happy being a monster but still seeking revenge against the mad scientist that made them
Fisher of Men: OCT character, a crabman from a once lush ocean world that has been reduced to a Mad Max wasteland as the oceans were stolen, forced to become a bounty hunter. Tried to join a fighting tournament between fighters from many worlds for the hope of a God's Wish to bring back his worlds oceans
Slochini: Air Genasi Bard, former noble exiled after playing a haunted song in a performance that killed and traumatized many in attendance. Drawn to seek out the source of the song that came to them in dreams.
Kirim: Lizardfolk Ranger, celebrity chef. Raised by Dwarven monster hunters. Got a recipe/autobiography book deal thanks to a God of Stories he whipped in the face. Has a feathered velociraptor animal companion that he dotes on.
Slrrp: Plasmoid Artificer, Spelljammer. Merchant's child who decided they wanted to explore the many different worlds they heard about from traders coming to their slime-covered planet
Mezeve: Plantoid Necromancer Wizard. Once in a Stellaris setting they're now in a weird world filled with the extinct or near extinct. Doesnt bother them since their species has been reduced to a single seed or sapling before
Boulder: Warforged Ancients Paladin. Former warbot that was killed in an ancient battle but was dug up by druids revitalizing the area (source of his name, they thought he was a big rock) and learned to love and appreciate nature and decided to protect. DEFINITELY predates Bastion Overwatch
Charles: Minotaur in a Fabula Ultima game. A simple farmer who got lost, sent on a mission by a prophetic sphinx (who he ends up marrying in the post game)
Duck: New Fabula Ultima character. A goblin exiled from Fairy Land who is quite literally cursed with bad luck. A veteran of some Fairy Land wars.
Carnigore: Oh where to start. Originally a Beast Barbarian in a weird 5E "hack" where she was a biotech Mech. Then a Monster Hunter. Most recently the threat in my Monster of the Week campaign where she's an artificially created creature called a Homunculus that was the "sister" of the were-thylacine player

Doom Desert in the Decanter of Delirium
The Doom Desert in the Decanter of Delirium is an exotic romp through a mysterious world. Full of riddles, puzzles, and inscrutable denizens. 5e compatible, this love letter to psychedelia is as vivid and beautiful as exciting and surreal. You can wrap yourself up in conversation with the dead drunks at the last saloon on earth. Or you could solve the sphinx riddle and discover the secrets of the…

This actually kinda fits better than Tressyms' former classification of "Beast". "Monstrosities" include Driders, Displacer Beasts, Centaurs, Sphinxes, Medusas, Owlbears, and Tarrasques—quite the noble classification. The classification also involves verbal as well as nonverbal creatures with higher intelligence than beasts, often with the inclusion of magic. (Though it may be noted that, while Displacer Beasts are considered Monstrosities, Blink Dogs are not.)
She also fits in with other winged hybrids like Griffons, Hippogriffs, Perytons, and Chimeras.
All other classifications include either a plain of existence (e.g. Fey), or Tera simply doesn't qualify for (e.g. Elemental, Aberration).
That she's a "Monstrosity" is merely down to the misinformation of the categories presumably being named by Adventurers.
D&D Wiki sources under the cut.

A less despicable patron than most, this subclass allows your warlock to buddy up and draw powers from a sphinx! Sphinxes work for gods, but they're extremely powerful beings in their own right as well: their poker faces are legendary, they have lots of wits as well as lots of strength, and they can even warp time and space. This subclass is very different to other warlock subclasses I've made before, so it was a refreshing challenge.
I'm still on a sort-of break doing my dissertation for another month, so thank you all for your continued patience.  If you want to more know more, check here for a full explanation. When I come back I'll hopefully have something VERY exciting to share with you all. No teasers just yet though!
If you want access to the high quality PDF version of this subclass, please consider pledging to my patreon. Your support would mean the world to me, and even a small financial contribution would allow me to set aside more time to dedicate to my homebrew hobby.
EDIT: Updated with some changes, check my patreon for “patch” notes.

Hero Forge still doesn't have great options as far as creating sphinxes goes, but this attempt at least avoids the usual "humanoid crouching down and bending their neck too far" issues. I had put this model together for a D&D 5e game where I was using aarakocra for her race mechanically, and using mage hand for most fine manipulation.
The base is a bit too small for her body, but it means that she actually shows up in thumbnails versus using the 1"x2" base. I like her big hair, but it's basically required in order to hide the fact that I've had to pull Shou Tucker and combine a girl with a dog.

Arcanatober Days 8 & 9– Green Hag Keeper / Sphinx’s Wheel
Alright, so I totally drew a card and made a homebrew based on it yesterday, I swear. But I also went on a 3-hour (actually 4.5 hour) car ride to a cabin in the woods and forgot to post it. But now I’ve got yesterday and today’s creations to post together, which is in a way even better. The cards for these were, respectively, The Hierophant/The Witch & The Wheel of Fortune/The Twins. I don’t wanna get into all the little intricacies that inspired them here, but maybe you can pick out the different meanings and details of each card that inspired them
