this may be something i might change my mind about later, but i don't actually Hate artificially generated aesthetic pictures that are like "fungus themed couch" "art noveau inspired camera" "stained glass bathtub" "gothic style platic chairs" or "really fancy sky" tbh. like i think there's lots of room for playing around with ideas and concepts using - applying some good faith here - public domain source photos or otherwise ethically/consensually acquired images. what DOES drive me up the wall is that every time i come across a set of pictures like that there's NO mention that it's artificially created. sometimes there's no source listed at all, which is really common for ~*Aesthetic Pictures*~ anyway. what's worse is when it's like, [Name Of Creator, Name of Collection, 2023] as if it's a legitimate art exhibit, with no mention of the program used to create the pics. that's actually pretty upsetting - the underhandedness of it all. ugh.

Too many writers are using generative 'AI' to make their book covers, so I've written a guide on how to make your own cover for free or cheap without turning to a machine.

I also do not believe that shirtless men require a warning, but yeah, two of the covers have shirtless men. The cover with a tasteful nude drawing (showing a bum, but not a weenor) has already been censored.

Um, WoTC. Do you recall what the purpose of a tabletop rpg is? or how it is played? If not, allow me to summarize: A group of people who are or likely will become friends collaboratively sit down to have fun creating some sort of sequence of events based in the ruleset of the game in question.

When developing rules, you want them to make the above experience enjoyable for all involved. How, exactly, are you planning on training an AI on what makes a fun game and play experience? Because you cannot just make things up. And you need to have players interfacing with the rules baked into the training data. Which leaves you with a few options:

Train the AI exclusively on previous rule sets, and other games, thus making a game WITHOUT PLAYTESTING (bad idea for many reasons). a) Potentially include War Stories, thus getting some training data on typically the more extreme experiences, from the perspective of (only) the player who felt like they were being cool.

Train the AI on play by post games. This is kind of valid if you want to make a game for playing by post - I am concerned about how you got that data however, and you probably want to cater more to the live play experience.

Train the AI on recorded online sessions obtained from e.g. Roll20. This could be useful for a game meant to be run exclusively over the internet, which is OK if that is your goal. You are straying a bit from the "tabletop" idea though. Also, many people use the virtual tabletop for only the tactile parts of the game, leaving the actual RP (two thirds of "RPG"!) to take place through a separate and typically non-linked program. This means your training data is incomplete, not to mention that this mode of play likely has a higher incidence of total strangers. Oh and of course this means using live recordings of people who almost certainly did not consent.

Violate every kind of respect for privacy and train your AI on recordings of people playing in their own homes. Considering I addressed this to WoTC, I probably do actually need to tell you that this makes you a very, very bad guy who needs to be defeated.

Hey folks, with the news that this February's Steam Next contains over 2500 games - it's pretty disappointing to say the least. While games are fantastic, and it's great that so many are being made - it also just makes it impossible for small indie games to get any sort of discoverability.

This is made worse by Generative AI which causes lists to be filled with phoned-in slop. While Steam has added an AI Generated Content Disclaimer on store pages, it's often hidden at the bottom and requires searching each store page individually.

I've written a post in their Suggestions / Ideas forum to allow players to filter out games made with Generative AI. As far as I'm concerned, it should work in a similar way to players being able to filter Adult/NSFW content.

An important message to college students: Why you shouldn't use ChatGPT or other "AI" to write papers.

Here's the thing: Unlike plagiarism, where I can always find the exact source a student used, it's difficult to impossible to prove that a student used ChatGPT to write their paper. Which means I have to grade it as though the student wrote it.

So if your professor can't prove it, why shouldn't you use it?

Well, first off, it doesn't write good papers. Grading them as if the student did write it themself, so far I've given GPT-enhanced papers two Ds and an F.

If you're unlucky enough to get a professor like me, they've designed their assignments to be hard to plagiarize, which means they'll also be hard to get "AI" to write well. To get a good paper out of ChatGPT for my class, you'd have to write a prompt that's so long, with so many specifics, that you might as well just write the paper yourself.

ChatGPT absolutely loves to make broad, vague statements about, for example, what topics a book covers. Sadly for my students, I ask for specific examples from the book, and it's not so good at that. Nor is it good at explaining exactly why that example is connected to a concept from class. To get a good paper out of it, you'd have to have already identified the concepts you want to discuss and the relevant examples, and quite honestly if you can do that it'll be easier to write your own paper than to coax ChatGPT to write a decent paper.

The second reason you shouldn't do it?

IT WILL PUT YOUR PROFESSOR IN A REALLY FUCKING BAD MOOD. WHEN I'M IN A BAD MOOD I AM NOT GOING TO BE GENEROUS WITH MY GRADING.

I can't prove it's written by ChatGPT, but I can tell. It does not write like a college freshman. It writes like a professional copywriter churning out articles for a content farm. And much like a large language model, the more papers written by it I see, the better I get at identifying it, because it turns out there are certain phrases it really, really likes using.

Once I think you're using ChatGPT I will be extremely annoyed while I grade your paper. I will grade it as if you wrote it, but I will not grade it generously. I will not give you the benefit of the doubt if I'm not sure whether you understood a concept or not. I will not squint and try to understand how you thought two things are connected that I do not think are connected.

Moreover, I will continue to not feel generous when calculating your final grade for the class. Usually, if someone has been coming to class regularly all semester, turned things in on time, etc, then I might be willing to give them a tiny bit of help - round a 79.3% up to a B-, say. If you get a 79.3%, you will get your C+ and you'd better be thankful for it, because if you try to complain or claim you weren't using AI, I'll be letting the college's academic disciplinary committee decide what grade you should get.

Eventually my school will probably write actual guidelines for me to follow when I suspect use of AI, but for now, it's the wild west and it is in your best interest to avoid a showdown with me.
