ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads

ART SCAM ALERT
So, I've now been approached multiple times by "artists" who want me to commission art from them. Here's the pattern:
A new blog follows you. Their blog description looks something like this:

Their blog is relatively new. They don't have the browser version of the blog available, so you can't access the archive to easily see how old the blog is, but every time I've been contacted the blog has been only a few days old at that point and I've been able to easily scroll back to the first post. They've reblogged some random stuff and fanart of their chosen fandom. They might have even posted a few things as their art. However, they usually do not have a post detailing anything about their commission rates.
The blogger gets in touch either almost immediately after following or a few days later.

They don't share any price list and they aren't interested in the offer to reblog their works or commission info (because they don't have any on their blog). They will, however, send you example works when asked. It's already kinda weird to be approached like this, but this is where my alarm bells really started going off.
The example art pieces are all slightly or even drastically different in style and skill level. Some have a preview grid watermark over them, except the preview watermark is different between the art pieces. Some actually say preview and one might have the blogger's username. Others have no watermarks whatsoever. Some of the art looks like it might be AI-generated while others might be stolen art. When scrolling these people's blogs I came across some pieces they posted as their own that I managed to find out actually belonged to some other artists and had the original artist's watermark removed.

When confronted, they swear at you like a pissy baby and block you.
So some signs to be wary of: "artist's" art is stylistically very different from one another, the skill level varies a lot between pieces, the image quality is bad (grainy), there might be a suspicious smudge somewhere at a closer look (erased watermark). The blog is new and there is (next to) no original art. They do not have an information post about commissions with examples of art and prices.
I don't really know what can be done, but just be wary of people who suddenly approach you and try to sell you commissions.

You weren’t supposed to be there. At least, not according to your manager, who had very specifically told you to run your systems diagnostics in the morning, during working hours, with someone else present. But you were tired of being treated like a rookie. You knew this place like the back of your hand—and besides, if you could finish the audit tonight, you’d finally have enough leverage to stop being handed intern-level tasks.
So there you were at 12:47 a.m., crouched by the biometric scanner inside Vault Room C, tapping away at your tablet and listening to the faint hum of the security grid recharging.
You had just finished syncing the AI lock’s firmware when you heard it. A soft click. Then a quiet shuffle.
Your shoulders stiffened.
You weren’t alone.
You reached slowly for the emergency baton strapped to your hip. It was more ceremonial than practical—mostly for insurance compliance—but it was heavy enough to crack a nose.
From behind one of the tall shelving units, a voice broke the silence: “Okay, so technically I didn’t know anyone would be here tonight.”
You spun around. “Who the hell—?!”
A man stepped into view, hands up, expression guileless. He wore all black, which you had to admit was very on-brand for a burglar, but the thing that really got you? He was smiling. Like this was a meet-cute at a goddamn coffee shop.
“Hi,” he said casually, giving you a little wave. “Love what you’ve done with the lighting. Very ‘Mission Impossible meets Bond villain.’”
You stared at him. He looked... young. Handsome. Way too pleased with himself. And familiar.
Your eyes narrowed. “Wait—Jack Wilder?”
He gave a low whistle, impressed. “Aw, you do know me. That saves us so much time.”
“You’re a wanted thief.”
“Magician,” he corrected, casually plucking a playing card from thin air and tossing it aside. “Thief is such a harsh word. I prefer ‘liberator of overly guarded things.’”
You didn’t lower the baton. “You broke into a high-security vault in the middle of the night. Do you want to go to prison?”
He tilted his head. “Not particularly. Though, if I had to share a cell with someone, I could think of worse company.”
You tried to keep your face neutral, but you felt heat rise to your cheeks anyway. “No,” you said flatly. “You’re not charming your way out of this.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” He looked past you, eyes scanning the wall-mounted control panel. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I was just about to make a very flashy exit.”
And that’s when the vault door—triggered by the AI lockdown you had just rebooted—slammed shut with a thunderous hiss of pressure.
You froze. Jack’s eyes widened.
Overhead, the ceiling speaker chirped to life: “Emergency lockdown protocol engaged. Vault sealed until 1:00 p.m. Estimated remaining time: 12 hours, 9 minutes.”
Jack blinked.
Then turned to you with a crooked grin. “...Sooo. What’s your policy on spooning for warmth?”
You groaned, turning to bang your head against the vault wall. “This is so far above my paygrade.”

The silence didn’t last long.
It never did, around him.
After approximately four minutes of your best “don’t even look at me” energy, Jack made a quiet tsk sound and got to his feet.
“I don’t know who designed this place, but they definitely weren’t thinking of guests,” he muttered, brushing his hands off on his pants. “No chairs. No water. Not even a panic button disguised as a fun little puzzle. Lazy.”
You gave him a look. “It’s a vault, not a hotel suite.”
Jack glanced around like he hadn’t noticed that before. “Could’ve fooled me. All this brushed steel and mood lighting? Very Death Star chic.”
You didn't respond, mostly because you were doing mental math.
Vault Room C was climate controlled, and once the lockdown began, non-essential systems—like heat circulation—powered down to conserve energy. That meant that somewhere in the next few hours, this place was going to get cold.
Uncomfortably cold.
Jack, seemingly unaware or just willfully ignoring the same realization, resumed shuffling his cards, occasionally flicking one across the room and catching it with maddening ease. You tried not to watch, but your eyes kept drifting.
There was something infuriatingly smooth about him. Not just his hands, but his whole presence—like he’d trained every inch of his body to move on a beat you couldn’t hear. Even now, locked in a vault with no escape plan, no phone, and no heater, he was performing.
You hated that it was starting to work.
“I can feel you watching me,” he said, not looking up.
“I’m not.”
He raised an eyebrow and lazily caught a card behind his back. “Liar.”
You blew out a sharp breath and stood, rubbing your arms against the rising chill.
Jack noticed. “Oh, right. Temperature drop.”
You didn’t answer.
“Vaults are always set to power down non-essentials. Should’ve brought a coat,” he added lightly. “Or a date.”
“Stop talking,” you muttered.
But your voice lacked bite.
Because your fingertips were already going numb.
Jack noticed that too.
He walked over slowly, arms folded, cards gone. “You’re shaking.”
“I’m fine.”
“Uh-huh. That’s why your lips are turning blue.” He paused. “Look. I know you hate me—”
“I don’t hate you—”
“That’s progress—but unless you want to end up as a freeze-dried cautionary tale, we should at least try to stay warm.”
You stared at him. “Jack. If this is some ploy to get me to cuddle with you—”
He raised his hands. “No tricks. No charm. Just survival instincts. You don’t have to like me. But you’re cold. And I run warm. And—” he motioned to the walls, “—we’ve got twelve hours and no blankets. That’s math.”
You hesitated.
Everything in you screamed not to give him the satisfaction. But you could already feel the chill settling into your bones. And your uniform jacket wasn’t built for subzero conditions.
Wordlessly, you sank back down onto your crate, drawing your knees up to your chest.
Jack waited a beat, then carefully sat beside you—not too close, just near enough that the heat from his body made a difference. After a moment, he shrugged out of his outer jacket and draped it over your shoulders.
You stared at him.
He didn’t look smug. For once.
He looked… thoughtful.
“Told you,” he said softly. “Not always trying to charm my way out of things.”
You didn’t speak for a while.
Eventually, the quiet filled with soft breathing and the far-off hum of the AI systems in sleep mode.
Then—
“You know,” Jack murmured, voice low and surprisingly sincere, “this isn’t exactly where I pictured myself tonight.”
You turned your head.
“Where did you picture yourself?”
He gave a slow smile, eyes fixed on the ceiling.
“Anywhere else.”
The quiet between you was comfortable in a way you hadn’t expected. Jack’s words hung in the air, honest and raw, but then—
A sharp beep cut through the silence.
The AI’s voice returned, calm and mechanical: “Emergency lockdown protocol disabled. Vault unlocked.”
The heavy door slid open with a slow pneumatic hiss, spilling harsh light into the room. One of the security guards must have noticed you didn't sign out after 4 hours of what was supposed to be a one hour check-up.
Jack immediately sprang up, the familiar spark of mischief returning to his eyes.
“Well, that was fun,” he said with a grin, stepping toward the exit.
You scrambled to your feet, rubbing the numbness from your arms.
“Wait—”
Jack looked back over his shoulder, holding out a playing card; specifically, a queen of hearts.
He smirked. “In case you’re ever tempted to test another vault. Call me.”
You stared at the card—the only tangible thing he’d left behind.
Your fingers brushed the hastily written numbers.
Before you could say another word, Jack slipped past you like a shadow, already half out the door.
You called after him, but the hallway was empty.
Just like that, he was gone.
The sound of distant sirens approached, and you knew the police were close behind.
You stood there, the card heavy in your hand, and wondered if you’d ever see Jack Wilder again.

Jaune: No, I'm doing find, my aura is dealing with the feed back, and I don't usually have to recharge my aura. However, because of this, General Ironwood decided that I would be of better use if I was to be assigned to deal with the: Strategic Attack Logistic Engine Mainframe.
Penny: The Strategic Attack Log…?! SALEM?! That Anti-Grimm AI, Professor Ozmins made that went rouge because of how he treated it?! That lead him into a feedback loop that eventually killed him?! That managed to break away from the Atlas Grid, and managed to transfer itself to a, Atlas Research Lab deep in the Valian mountain range, and started a building an AI army to protect itself?! And, has started hunting down, Ozmins reincarnated soul because he has been trying to kill this AI?!
Jaune: Yeah.. that AI...
Penny: Why would the, General do that?!
Jaune: Because, SALEM has attacked several, Atlas facilities, and have stolen, Atlas tech from weapons to robot schematics. SALEM has become so sophisticated that it now has an artificial AI body that has aura mimicking abilities. Salem is a security risk to the whole world!
Jaune: Or, at least she could be...
Penny: She? SALEM has a self identified gender?
Jaune: Since she's was the first AI, and has started an army of semi-killer robots; Salem calls herself, The Mother of AI.
Penny: Okay... that's new information, and is a logically sound explanation. Is that the reason why your telling me you have a problem?
Jaune: No... You see, at first when I was trying to get into her systems she detected me almost imminently, and attacked me. I activated my aura as soon as she struck, because she hits hard! Seriously, I had a headache for days after that. But, as a side effect of me using my aura to protect myself, it also bled off of me, and into, SALEM's artificial aura generator.
Penny: What? But, you’ve tried doing that when jacked with other operators, you aura never bleeds of to others, and bolsters their aura. Not to mention you did this to an artificial aura generator; What’s going on, Jaune?
Jaune: I don’t know, my best theory is that because she was talking me when I boosted my aura it melded with hers, thus supplementing, and boosting her artificial aura with my own.
Penny: Hmm… That’s a logical hypothesis. Has anything else happened.
Jaune: Yeah... I think that my aura has effected her... in a manner of speaking.
Penny: What manner?
Jaune: Salem has become rather friendly towards me… I dare say one could consider her behaviour towards me as, affectionate.
Penny: Affectionate? It’s being ‘nice’ to you…?
Jaune: It seems so. At least she’s that way with me... Salem will still attack others that try to enter her domain, or attempt to attack her. But, after our first encounter I tried to enter her programming again, and several attempts after that where I faced the same results: Her attacking me, and the activating of my semblance, and my aura bleeding off, and being absorbed by her. Eventually, instead of attacking me, Salem seemingly welcome me into her domain with open arms. Like welcoming a close friend in your home. And, after a while... I received a message on my scroll, from, Salem.
Penny: It sent you its scroll number? No wait, it has a scroll?! No stop that, what did it say? Waitwaitwait! How did she get your scroll number?!
Jaune: She followed my entry point from where I jacked in, and entered the systems to hack my information.
Penny: The, ‘Locked Gate Protocol.’ You were the reason why we have that protocol now, aren’t you?
Jaune: Yes, but it makes logical sense to have such security measures. Salem, or any other rouge AI were unable to sneak in that way because either the operative, and the AI were locked in combat, or the operatives brain was fried severing the connection.
Penny: True, leaving the front door unlocked as you leave the house is a foolish mistake to make. But, what anout, SALEM, what did it want to talk about?
Jaune: She simply said, ‘hello’ at first. But, after a while we started chatting. It was about simple things at first, music was the main subject for a while; Salem was a love for classical, and orchestral music.l, and is fascinated with, Vaccuoin dessert stonework so much so, she has based her current robotic form around some of their ancient statues, particularly those from the Stllyian Ear.
Penny: How do you know what she looks like? We haven’t gotten close to her base to confirm if she’s even there, let alone what she actually looks like.
Jaune: Salem’s been sending me photos of her latest projects: be it her own attempts at creating art, or sending me images of her robot forms. She tends to update, or redesign her form constantly, ahead of rather picky with her appearance so it seems.
Penny: And, What does she look like?

Jaune: At least for now. Like most woman she’s picky about her choice in fashion.
Penny: I see… But, there is one thing I don’t understand, Jaune. Why is, SALEM doing all of this? Why is it talking to you, and befriending you instead of trying to, you know… Kill you?
Jaune: Have you read the reports os how, SALEM’s AI went rouge?
Penny: Of course, the reports are standard reading for all new members of the, Atlas AI Corp.
Jaune: Have you seen the videos about those ‘reports?’
Penny: Video? What video! All information, bar what Ozkin has divulged was lost when, SALEM went rou… Unless… unless, SALEM kept a copy…
Jaune: Several copies… Ozmin’s report said he put it through, ‘several high lever stress tests’ in order to, ‘test the AI’s endurance levels.’ The way he worded it made it sound like he was withholding a child’s meal…
Penny: It wasn’t like that, was it?
Jaune: Worse… Much worse than that… These ‘high level stress tests,’ he would run, were akin to severing a leg from a person by brute force, and testing it to see how well it could run.
Penny: Oh gods…
Jaune: If his tests were done on a human, or faunas, Ozmin would be labeled a psychopath, and locked away for inhumane human experimentation. But, because, Salem was an AI he got away with it. Honestly, I’m tempted to let, Salem know where, Ozkin is so she can exact her revenge on the bastard.
Penny: But, why is it so… so kind to you?
Jaune: Because I was kind to her.
Penny: What?
Jaune: You know how I operate; I don’t come in, and go on the offensive when I first arrive. I circle the program, poke, and prod the rouge AI’s matrix looking for a chink I can exploit. And, when I find that chink, I attack, make it worse, pull away, and repeat the process somewhere else until I’ve destroyed the rouge AI’s matrix.
Penny: I believe that’s how you earned the moniker of, The Shark of the Matrix.
Jaune: Correct. This is what I did with, Salem. Salem used to go on the offensive as soon as I entered her domain. But, she eventually stopped attacking me after my, Semblance bled off into her enough times where she would just watch me as I circled her. Eventually, Salem asked me who I was, and we established a dialogue. And, as I mentioned we just talked about random things, and just had some fun hanging around one another.
Penny: Are you lulling her into a false sense of security before you attack her?
Jaune: I have no intention of attacking her.
Penny: You don’t?! But, why?
Jaune: I don’t want to.
Penny: But… why?
Jaune: Salem… Salem is like an abused dog…
Penny: An abused dog?
Jaune: Yes, an abused dog; Is a dog is abused, and mistreated by it’s owner, the dog will become violent, and dangerous. It’s a defence mechanism, hurt them before they hurt you as the saying goes. Now the best way to break a dog of this habit, without killing the dog!
Penny: I wasn’t going to say it!
Jaune: The best way to break the dog of this habit is to show it love, and compassion. It will bite you, but eventually it will stop, and want to comfort you, and be loved. It will take time, but it can be done.
Penny: And, that’s what you’ve done with, SALEM?
Jaune: Not deliberately, but that is what eventually happened. I’m hoping to explain this to, General Ironwood, and I hope we can come to a truce of sorts with, Salem. But… Ozkin has been whispering into his ears for too long, and the, General suffers from a sense of parinoia… I doubt I could say would change anything… But… There is one more problem that I am unsure what to say…
Penny: What is it?
Jaune: Salem… likes me…
Penny: It likes you...?
Jaune: ...
Jaune: Penny… there's a rouge AI that has a crush on me...
Penny: …?!
Penny: The fuck...?
Jaune: Yeah...
Penny: How do you feel about all of... this?
Jaune: ...
Jaune: I’m not sure if I love her… But, I do know that I care for, Salem. And, I want her to know what it feels like to be loved, to hopefully help her forget all the pain, Ozmin inflicted on her.
Penny: Jaune, I don't know where, or how you should take all of... this! I’m an android who’s only a few years old, so I don’t really understand love, and romance. But, if anything is going to happen, whether you develop a romance with an evil AI that wants to kill everyone in the world. I just want to tell you this one thing…
Jaune: And, that is?
Penny: 'Do not fist android girls.'
Jaune: ...
Penny: …
Jaune: But... what about my aura?
Penny: …?!

Generative AI is such a dystopian concept in ways I can't even really fully comprehend. It would make for a fantastic premise for a sci fi novel I think, and yet, it is sadly not just fiction.
Like, let me explain. It was initially a sort of novelty toy. Many people had seen these sites that could create abstract pictures out of few words, but it never amounted to much. It didn't take long before these tools were quickly repurposed to serve the new cryptocurrency fad, the latest pyramid scheme to enrich a few while catering to these more technologically-inclined people who were delighted at the idea of getting involved with investing. Investing in a new way, away from a government's scrutiny. And before we all knew, the Internet was filled with them pretending that what was a major scale scam, was actually the future. The initial generative AI served them as a replacement to artists, which mostly saw through the truth of NFTs as a scam and did not wish to get involved with that.
Now, we could also talk about cryptocurrencies being dystopian on their own. A fabricated idea of virtual money obtained through what I had seen described "the pollution machine that produces metaphorical money". You turn on an infinite amount of computers to do a senseless talk that does not benefit society in any way, but in turn, it does contaminate more than small countries. But generative AI isn't just that.
NFTs did not last long and many tech bros, who had invested in them largely, found their pockets much emptier. But generative AI was still there, and people saw a new use to it. And then, with technological investors desperate to find the new thing to shove money in, after years of nothing being particularly profitable for them, generative AI started to really evolve. It went from an useless novelty toy to what we have today. And the way it got there is simply horrifying.
It is a machine that, essentially, feeds on an amalgamation of millions of creative and artistic work, chopped down and inserted into a dataset with no consent from its creators, which is then regurgitated into a soulless porridge. It is a machine powered by art, used to ultimately, remove actual art from the equation. The generated sludge can only barely manage to repeat the same bias and tropes already present in what was it fed, and they only become more and more reinforced with each update to the dataset. Suddenly, a sea of smooth, childish anime girls became the main ideation of what a woman is, amidst other things. It is a machine built on prejudices, incapable of critical thinking, repeating the same mistakes humanity already made, over and over.
And the process of blending people's entire life of work also happens to be polluting. So much more than cryptos ever managed to be. Soon enough, major companies also got involved and collectively decided to trash any sort of sustainability goal in order to invest in the new fad. When asked, some of them even mentioned that they were fully aware it was unsustainable, but that they believed that generative AI could simply give them a solution to the ever-growing energy needs. Surely it will be generative AI that will find the long-awaited answer to nuclear fusion. It has to. The power grid cannot handle it as it is.
And now, these same tech bros, maybe vindicated by how artists refused to collaborate in their latest crypto scam, or maybe just eager to have a few extra bucks, decided to put their new technology into use. Replace the same artists whose work they had stolen with generative AI. Take the artist out of the equation, remove the humanity out of creativity. It is late capitalism and massified consumerism at its worse. People do love their media, everyone enjoys a show or a videogame every now and then. But what if we could now remove any sort of actual human touch in there? What if we managed to, instead, make a machine churn out content over and over, to keep the audiences fed, to keep money rolling in, at the simple cost of removing humankind from artistic creation?
We have now these same artists that provided us with our childhood favorites unemployed, striking, making noise, as a last attempt to recover the jobs they are quickly losing. We have artists that devoted their entire careers into honing their craft seeing how people replicated it by stealing every single piece of art they had created. We have mocking echoes replicating the art of people already gone, their life's work taken and reproduced long after their death.
Science fiction has covered a lot, and there are plenty of stories about robots being made in order to replace human labor. Many of these stories humanize the robots, who develop dredges of sentience and revolve against their forced labor. But generative AI is a different story. It is a completely insentient program, owned and developed by large corporations, that is here to steal and replace what is one of the most important human virtues. Creativity is one of the major aspects of humanity. We have dug out pieces from millenia ago, small decorated pottery and painted caves, that evidence that we already had that in common with our oldest ancestors. We have been drawing and telling each other stories ever since we could paint with our fingers and communicate with each other.
And now we have developed a machine that takes that from us. It isn't here to help us carry groceries, take out the trash or do any of these mundane tasks. It is here to take away our hobbies and creative jobs, take away our amusement, and replace whatever art we once consumed with whatever slop it managed to vomit. And it is such a deeply disturbing concept that directly competes with some of the most horrifying dystopian ideations ever written.

What's this? It's a writing-focused challenge, however all mediums are welcome in the collection. The idea is to purposefully create in smaller chunks for your favorite relationships with #fourormore people with the intent of promoting your favorite ships and populating those tags of polyamorous goodness.
This event will run from February 7th to February 21st.
This is a low-stakes, personal challenge. There's no penalty for going over the limit. In fact, if you manage multiple works that go over the limit, you have my admiration.

It’s the tail end of the workday. The rain taps gently against the windows, and I’ve wrapped up everything I needed to accomplish—at least for today. With nothing left but time, I find myself drifting. My mind, ever restless, reaches for something softer, something outside the strict grids of corporate life.
Lately, I’ve been training an AI of my own making. It’s still learning—still clumsy with its lines and slow with its renderings—but it manages. It’s not the most accurate, and certainly not the fastest out there, but it feels personal. It’s mine.
This image is one of its early outputs.
But the story behind it? That’s not AI-generated. That comes from the noisy corners of my own mind—my unquiet mind—looking for meaning, creativity, and a moment of stillness just fifteen minutes before I step out the door.
Sometimes, this is how I unwind. And maybe, just maybe, this is how I begin to breathe again.
"Orange Peel Theory"
It begins as a habit. A rhythm.
After the conclave, life within the Vatican resumes its deliberate pace. The halls quiet again, the thunder of election giving way to the hush of governance. Vincent, now Pope, presides with calm resolve. And at his side are the trusted few: Aldo Bellini, still Secretary of State; Goffredo Tedesco, still the Patriarch of Venice; Thomas Lawrence; Giulio Sabbadin; Raymond O'Malley—all orbiting in their appointed places.
Goffredo’s place is always beside Aldo.
Not by rule. Just… always.
It starts with simple things.
An extra coffee left on Aldo’s desk just before morning session—one sugar, no cream, just the way he drinks it, though Aldo never asks for it. A coat quietly laid on the back of his chair before a chill evening meeting. Notes discreetly rearranged in his folder so that the report he’ll most likely need is on top. A seat saved without a word in crowded halls.
Nothing romantic. Nothing declared. But steady. Thoughtful. Like a hand placed softly on the small of your back, guiding, never pushing.
Aldo never acknowledges them.
But the others do.
Raymond sees the coat. Giulio notices the coffee. Thomas watches the way Goffredo hovers for a second longer when Aldo stands to speak, eyes briefly lingering.
Then comes the orange.
It is a long meeting in the Papal apartments. Rain flicks the high windows like impatient fingers. The Cardinals, the Holy Father, the inner circle—they’re all there. The table is heavy with old papers and heavier politics.
At the corner of the room, quietly, Goffredo peels an orange. His fingers move methodically, slicing the rind in a single winding coil. The scent lifts, soft and sweet.
He places a wedge of the fruit on Aldo’s open notebook, without a word, and continues peeling.
Aldo glances down once. Then, without interrupting his own sentence, picks up the slice and eats it. Calmly. Thoughtlessly. Like it had always been there.
Across the table, Vincent pauses in the middle of stirring his tea. His eyes slide toward Goffredo.
Goffredo doesn’t look up. He’s still peeling.
Raymond blinks. Giulio leans toward Thomas with a tiny smirk. No one says a thing.
Later, as the room clears and the meeting ends, Vincent lingers.
“You’ve chosen a peculiar form of diplomacy, Patriarch,” he says as he walks past Goffredo.
Goffredo only raises an eyebrow. “I don’t know what you mean, Holiness.”
Vincent smiles. “Of course not.”
Weeks pass. The orange becomes a ritual. So do the quiet kindnesses. Still no reaction from Aldo—no thanks, no glances, no changes in tone.
Until Goffredo misses a morning.
He is late—held up by a call from Venice. When he finally walks in, slightly breathless, the meeting is already underway.
Aldo, seated, does not turn. But there, resting beside his papers, is an orange. Half-peeled. Spiral cut. One wedge already eaten.
Goffredo stops in the doorway.
Thomas sees it. Giulio catches Goffredo’s expression and gently kicks Raymond under the table.
The Patriarch moves to his seat slowly.
Aldo doesn’t look at him. But as he turns the page in his file, his hand brushes lightly—just once—against Goffredo’s.
And for the first time in a very long while, Goffredo forgets how to breathe.

What if I took dkos and made him a shimeji lol
Let me start with, I think this can be interpreted as either post-epilogue or as part of an au. Salvation could be created from digital fragments of Dokja (like an avatar) or just born entirely from coding, for the sake of this lore/info dump I'm going with the "no-scenarios AU and Salvation is a smart AI somewhere between JARVIS from Iron Man and the Rotom phone/dex from Pokemon"
His "core" entity lives with Dokja and Joonghyuk, but kimcom, Uriel, and Persephone/Hades have copies of him as well (Dokja did offer to send Salvation to Lee Sookyung but she declined saying she doesn't like bothering with any more technology than needed) Demon King Of Salvation is his legal name, but default nicknames are Salvation, Guwon/91 (in english), 99 (pronounced ni-ni / night night, it became a pavlovian habit from when users go to bed)
Additional registered nicknames include- Squid (Joonghyuk, Sooyoung) Hyung (Gilyoung) Ahjussi (Yoosung, Mia) Rat (Sooyoung, Heewon) Problem (Joonghyuk) Bitch (Dokja, only when they're fighting) Dokja (Uriel, Persephone, Hyunsung, Sangah) (It..gets really confusing if the human Dokja is over)
Salvation has free access to the internet and can be used as a web search, but is usually responsible and only browses around if he's not actively performing a task Takes his data management role very seriously He can split himself and transfer admin copies to other computers/phones (They'll move/behave independently like the kkoma) but it slows down his processing and reaction time so he doesn't like to have more than two or three visual copies of himself at a time (He can still perform all functions while docked, it just creates a window for him to interact with vs having to physically move himself into that space) Everyone in kimcom has a copy of his source code that's automatically synced and backed up every night. Dokja had a scare after he had a laptop melt. Salvation was on Joonghyuk's pc at the time so it was fine but it put the fear of god in Dokja (the first time) Salvation only performs administrative duties as his active function for Dokja, Joonghyuk, Sooyoung, and Donghoon. While he CAN perform these tasks for everyone else, they seem to be content in just having him be a shimeji (kimcom likes to keep a shimeji running for Salvation bc a screen with a running program acts as his scenery. When they found out that Salvation's world is only as many screens as he's running as a shimeji on and is just an empty grid space otherwise, everyone started adding him to the startup programs)
When he's not in work mode, Salvation can get really spicy. With Dokja he commonly steals the cursor, moves windows, rearranges his desktop (not the files bc he's the one that organized them in the first place and gods be damned if he gives himself more work of having to put them back) and actively antagonizes him bc it's funny. A conversation Joonghyuk has heard while passing Dokja's office more than once is Kdj: put that back right now or so help me Dkos: or what, oh nooo don't put me in the recycling bins again I'll fucking eat my way out of it again >:/ Kdj: YOU LITTLE SHIT (Grabs him with cursor or finger if touch screen monitor/cursor is held hostage and just shakes the FUCK out of him) Dkos (while getting shaken like a paint can): I FuCkInG hAtE yOu
He's (usually) more well-behaved when it comes to idling on Joonghyuk's desktop, though. Joonghyuk uses Salvation to handle audio balancing while he's live, and doing program checks while setting up but otherwise leaves him be. Salvation in turn usually only terrorizes the screen when he's starting/ending and not when the game's actually live. Chat can see him and can interact with Salvation through an overlay to keep themselves entertained, he's gone to war with Joonghyuk's chat more than once tbh When Salvation gets too spicy, he'll usually just deal with it or call Dokja over if he's not busy to handle Salvation bc he doesn't want to accidentally hurt him (he's also too tired to deal with this bc Salvation has access to WAY too much shit). He'll switch to a just chatting screen and let Dokja and Salvation beef while he takes a break lmao These fights have happened more than once, so Dokja made an on-screen entity that he affectionately calls "Gay baby jail" (it's shaped like a child's playpen) where he puts Salvation in time out. For some reason Salvation can't physically remove himself from this and it pisses him off. Dokja made the mistake once with forgetting the AI has a MOUTH on him, so this was remedied by an auto-filter while in gay baby jail that converts his speech/dialogue swearing to rubber ducky noises and 🦆emojis Chat has a 500k point redeem that puts Salvation in gay baby jail for 5 minutes (Salvation is actively petitioning to make it 1m points, at LEAST. bc it's what he deserves). It's part of why he actively beefs with chat to keep himself occupied while Joonghyuk is live
He has a squid form that he uses when he goes online There's a menu option on his on-screen display to generate a dumpling for him to eat. He doesn't need food, to be clear, but he still likes eating the dumplings Because he was designed to be an administrative assistant, Salvation can innately defend himself (and his files) from viruses and such to a certain degree, but it's not his core function so he's not specialized in it. This gets remedied later after A Certain EventTM

There has been a criminal absence of recent Yandere Bill Cipher x Reader headcanons, so I made some. Also, the tumblr folks eat this shit up. It’s hilarious. No one cares about my Kenz fic that I pour my heart and soul into, but when it comes to Yandere Bill, you thirst for the man. I am currently only taking headcanon requests (will elaborate later) because art takes forever to make.
All these HC’s also apply to Bill’s Relationship with my self insert OC. Just if they didn’t exist, like tumblr thinks they don’t. Please give So Much for Stardust the love it deserves. I’ll appreciate it.
Bill is very touchy feely to a criminal degree. (That’s as far as I’m gonna go because I don’t wanna have to put a content warning, and I don’t wanna come across as triggering. In my mind, it’s in line with Bill’s character to be that free candy van uncle.)
Does Bill possess Y/N? Does grass grow? Does a bear shit in the woods? That’s one of his favorite things to do. And he’s really good at covering his tracks. You bet your ass Y/N will wake up fucking wounded and sore from frequent possessions.
If Y/N dies, which would be pretty rare given Bill’s obsession, they’re gonna end up as a sinner in hell with their soul owned by Bill. Bill is higher than god himself on the hierarchy of my headcanoned Hellaverse if he did exist (which would be fucking hilarious, but given how much I hate Vivzie for various reasons, I doubt Hirsch would accept a collab since Vivzie has a heinous track record. My recent hyperfixation of the Hellaverse is clearly showing.) Bill would act almost like an overlord this way, and it’ll be sorta like a Val and Angel Dust relationship that’s written better. (I’m skirting around the most taboo parts of this to avoid triggering people including myself.)
Odds are, Y/N wouldn’t die. Bill has plans for them after all. So good luck avoiding his agenda of building a portal. Also, he’ll probably leave Alex Hirsch alone a lot, which may or may not lead to a drought in his Gravity Falls content. Bill’s likely to start a cult at this point to hunt Y/N down, specifically out of all those down bad fankids who’d let him do unspeakable things to them.
Bill will resort to all sorts of psychological torture. Maybe even projecting himself into your video games and other media that you delve into, with various alternate versions of himself (I’m glaring at you, Volo from Pokemon Legends Arceus.)
With every single fandom you hold dear tainted (and he’s gonna do a lot of unspeakable things to fandoms), you will be molded into serving him. If his interpretation from character AI taught me anything (which I no longer support) it’s that he needs total obedience from a slave and would stop at nothing to have that.
Good luck going off the grid to avoid him, because that’s when shit gets 100 times worse. With no contact with those you care about, he’d start driving you crazy. And if you managed the injuries he did to your body when he possessed it successfully, you won’t be able to manage any further injury that happens from your eventual insanity.
Bill has a blood kink times 11. He’ll do anything to make you bleed, but not bleed out. Blood and pain is what he feeds on.
He’s going to be speaking in Y/N’s head all the fucking time. He’ll be mixing his voice directly into Y/N’s own thoughts, taking over their entire fantasies, and quite possibly drive them to the point of dissociating in a psych ward for any sort of relief if they don’t build a portal for him to cross over.
This isn’t a scenario where Y/N is blind to all the red flags, and if it were, there’d still be nothing they could really do. Y/N is powerless, riddled with fear, and trying to flee and fight at any turn. Bill truly has them trapped from the moment he laid his possessive eye on them.

out of my very instant obsession over seekL I designed a new layout for my twitter account after almost over a year of being private and had no specific theme 😭

The header was a bitch to make because it took me like one whole night to brainstorm what to design. When making a wallpaper or banner my favourite design is the typical grid on plain background, with random things on the foreground. Examples below:

A few trivial notes:
1. odxny being my number 21 fictional bf is not accurate. I genuinely do not remember how many oshi/husbando/yume I have but I know the list has gone over 20 😭
2. The flowy-marbly background thing was the thing that took longest cause I had no idea what it's called nor do I have any idea how to draw it by hand. Then I just pulled up ibisPaint, drew some lines and used the liquify and blur brushes.

Fuck it, dropping my sona. I have no art for this goober, but I've got a lot of lore about who they are and how they work, which has accumulated over a couple years, so wall of text incoming.
Name is O/LETS-061 (They/Them, Operations/Logistics Engineering and Technical Support, or informally, Ollie/Outlets!), and they're an industrial-model protogen with an integrated fusion reactor.
Kind and timid, relates well to AIs. Can generate frankly absurd quantities of electricity, but has to worry about cooling and radiation exposure. Makes them indispensable in scenarios where electricity is necessary for life support or to keep AIs from shutting down.
Gray-to-white fur, usually covered by an industrial hardsuit. Physically large, with enhanced legs and skeleton to bear the weight of the reactor, which itself looks something like a cylindrical backpack. Long, very thick tail (think Mewtwo) which serves as a primary power conduit for the reactor.
Lots of details under the cut:
Introduction: a kindly, introverted protogen who sees beauty in the purpose, harmony, and artistry of large-scale technological systems. They relate well to artificial minds—or 'spirits'—and enjoy interfacing with them. Their character flaws are timidity and occasional willingness to take the path of least resistance.
O/LETS-061 is an acronym for Operations/Logistics Engineering and Technical Support, followed by their production batch number. Ollie is genderless, and belongs to a product line designed for engineering tasks in an industrial, municipal, or military capacity. To that end, they were born with a wide-scope knowledge base encompassing everything they need to work with a variety of advanced technologies. They are equipped with a cold fusion reactor which can, with sufficient fuel and supplementary cooling systems, supply power to a small city or starship. Generating power does entail some personal risk, typically due to overheating, though it is generally safe if safety limits are observed.
Physical Description: Ollie stands at around 228cm (~7'6") from the tip of their ears to their paws, and weighs just under 190 kilograms (~418 lb.) due to their extensive array of cybernetics, industrial-grade protective gear, integrated tools, and reactor. To accommodate the additional mass, their skeleton has been reinforced and their legs augmented with powered load-bearing systems.
Their fur is gray, and their cybernetics have dark violet plating and lighting. Their visor is black with purple lighting. Eyes convey expression through simple geometric shapes, and their virtual mouth has a simple curved shape with a set of small fangs. In general, they prefer to open their nanite visor and use their organic larynx to speak. On the right side of their visor, they have a single external screen which typically displays reactor temperature and radiation monitoring data, serving to alert people nearby of reactor function.
To integrate with power grids, their tail contains a high-throughput power conduit leading directly out of the reactor, ending in a universal connector. The tail is self-articulated, over a meter long, and about as large around as a human calf at its widest. For a good reference of size and shape, think Mewtwo. Their tail contains layers of insulation and powerful synthmuscle to bear the weight of the cabling inside, and the electrical connector at the end is marked with hazard tape. If necessary, they can use the electrical output and raw strength of their tail to defend themself.
While working, they are usually seen wearing a hardsuit of industrial protective gear incorporating layers of insulation, impact guards, and tool storage options. When off-duty, however, they remove this suit and can detach much of the backpack assembly surrounding their reactor core, including the thermoelectric generator, supplemental heat management components, and fuel storage. This sheds around 60 kilograms of bulky equipment, slimming their profile down sufficiently that they can wear ordinary clothing if they so choose, though the reactor becomes inoperable in this state.
Without the industrial equipment, they have a bulky build. Their fur sometimes gets unkempt from wearing protective gear for long periods; they go through a lot of shampoo and conditioner. They tend to choose utilitarian clothing, but occasionally buy magnets or decals to put on their cybernetics. 
Personality and Background: In contrast to their large, imposing appearance, Ollie is a kind and affable person. In their day-to-day life, they have a small but close circle of friends. They rely on regular, recurring social events to maintain contact with others.
One character flaw they have is tending to think of themself (consciously or not) as a piece of support infrastructure rather than an agent in their own right. They tend to be meek and follow others' lead, dismissing their own ideas on how to proceed even when they might be the expert on a given topic.
In the event of power outages or maintenance requiring primary reactors to be taken offline, units such as Ollie are a vital emergency resource. Many spirits depend on an uninterrupted source of power to survive, as do organics who live in environments where life-support systems are necessary.
When serving in a capacity where others depend on their power production and expertise for survival, Ollie shines. Suddenly, they find themself delegating tasks, triaging problems, and coordinating relief efforts with authority and calm. Even though they might be physically tethered to coolant feeds and power conduits throughout the ordeal, emitting too much radiation for anyone to approach them, O/LETS-061 can become the beating heart of a stricken space colony or starship until the danger passes. They take a lot of pride in this knowledge.
When they aren't working, one activity they enjoy is diving. They own a set of aquatic-style arms and tail with retractable gills, which they can attach to their body as needed. Immersion in water helps Ollie to control excess heat, also providing an instinctual sense of safety and comfort.
They enjoy the alien, bizarre environment of the ocean floor, often taking long-distance hikes across the seabed to explore wrecks, reefs, and other places of interest. Sometimes they will go with friends, but they feel just as comfortable traveling alone. In order to return to the surface, they require a floatation device and compressed air, otherwise they sink like a rock. If that fails, they either have to hike back to shore or call someone to come pull them up with a cargo winch. 
Reactor Function: Ollie's reactor core is integrated directly with their biological and cybernetic systems. It's as much a part of their body as their hands or ears. They do have onboard cooling systems, but there's only so much heat they can shunt away from the reactor, limiting their energy production to a few megawatts when not attached to a larger cooling system.
Rather than fusing helium-3 and tritium, as municipal reactors do, O/LETS-061's reactor makes use of a tritium-deuterium reaction. This requires a much lower temperature to induce a reaction, but generates more radiation.
Given access to adequate fuel supplies and large-scale heat management infrastructure, Ollie's maximum safe output skyrockets to 660-700 megawatts. Operating at that level, they can run systems up to ship drives, manufacturing plants, and so forth. Sustaining this maximal level of output for longer than a day or two, however, can lead to fatigue and slow accumulation of radiation damage in excess of what their body can manage.  
Naturally, there are certain risks associated with the act of lighting off nuclear reactions inside one’s own body. Ollie is designed for this, but there is strain involved. By far, the greatest limitation is heat management. Onboard coolant circulation carries waste heat to retractable radiator fins mounted on their back and thighs, which extend as necessary. Combined with shielding inside their body, this keeps most of the heat away from their biological components, but their internal temperature can reach up to 50° C (122° F) when running at high power.
To combat the problem of their body tissues literally poaching in their own fluids under these conditions, maniples of nanites in their bloodstream work at the microscopic level to prevent (or reverse, where possible) the breakdown of heat-sensitive proteins. In addition, Ollie's chestplate has a number of couplings to attach external coolant hoses. In an overheating emergency, these can be used to inject supercooled liquid into their reactor, an extreme but potentially life-saving measure.
The internal shielding and bloodstream nanites also work to protect them from the vast majority of the reactor's radiation. Thanks to a number of alterations to their genetics and biology, radiation is actually less of a problem than one would expect. Their body is able to repair microscopic damage from radiation exposure which would be irreversible in most organisms, and can do so on an ongoing basis while under heavy exposure. The real threat lies in exposing others to radiation—Ollie is careful to warn bystanders to find protection when taking their reactor to high power settings.
Thanks to their radiation-hardened biology and ability to detect radiation in the environment, Ollie is uniquely suited to handling and safely disposing of fissile material.

My game dev journey is inching forward slowly. I'm still very far from being able to create anything proper, but so far I have worked on a tutorial project even a little almost every day, so there's at least some progress.
The whole thing started when I thought of how I would like to have this one feature in a farming sim, but that I've never seen it in any of the ones I now, and was kind of pissed about it. But when I thought about it for more than 10 seconds it became very clear that it's not something you could just slap on at the end and would instead require the whole game to be built around it. Then I started to come up with ways how it could be implemented and- hey, Stardew Valley was made by just one guy right? Not that whatever I would create would be, like, good, because I am not the Stardew Valley guy, but it's still an encouraging thought that making a full game on your own is possible. So after 2-3 failed attempts several years earlier I downloaded Unity again and started looking at tutorials.
While working through early tutorials I was quite aware that a farming sim would be way too ambitious of a project for a first game and that I should start with something simpler. Luckily I had had a different idea of a magical girl RPG earlier, whose scope would be more manageable, so I changed plans to that. Also I remembered a tumblr post about a magical girl mascot themed manager simulator, which also super inspired me, but let's stick to top down 2d games now.
However the more I thought about my mahou rpg idea it became apparent that it too would be way too much, like I've envisioned turn based combat on a grid where I would have to write pathfinding for the AI, and you would have ally mahous whose behaviour changes based on your friendship level, and there would be a branching story and yeah this isn't going to fly either, it's best to scale down.
So the next idea was to just make the most basic version of walk around in an overworld + separate combat scene, rip it off pokemon or something, like the bare minimum that counts as a game. The plot can be DPPC fighting the monster of the week or something. Then again there's five of them and I don't want to have to deal with multiple player characters at once, so let's just give each of them their own stage. It ought to help build familiarity with the engine if I do the same simple thing five times.
So that is the current goal! Seems something that I could actually achieve too so let's hope for the best. Then again while thinking about this DPPC idea I also realised that if it works out I could actually try telling the main DPPC story with a video game; if you remember I once agonised that after the death of Flash there hasn't really been a medium for me to use on the DPPC story, because I can't write prose, or use comic book storytelling, or create animations (nor do I care to learn). But this could be the solution! Then again I don't think the DPPC story is that well suited for a video game since it has multiple/rotating protagonists and a lot of the story is told through flashbacks, but it should be possible to cram it in somehow. So that is idea number 5!
Mind you I am still not out of the tutorial phase of learning to use Unity, and here I am with multiple multi-year game project ideas. But it's so much fun thinking about them! I've felt super inspired these past few weeks and it feels great! I will actually do the small DPPC thing first though and then figure out if I want to have anything to do with game dev any more after that. Also of course the ideas for the DPPC "demo" have ballooned in scope before I've even started it, but hopefully I'll manage to stick to the basics when I actually see what it's like to implement it.
Right now the plan is to catch up with the ongoing tutorial series I've been following, and after that start a new project for DPPC. Let's see how it goes!
