Beats, Bytes & The Future Sound: AI Meets Electronic Music
Electronic music has always been about pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and bending sound into new dimensions. Now, artificial intelligence is stepping into the booth, reshaping how beats are built, melodies emerge, and tracks come to life. This isn’t about robots replacing producers—it’s about a new creative partnership, where human intuition meets machine-driven possibilities. The Evolution…

E-Gothic Conformity: The Horror of the Algorithm (Part ??/??)
Tumblr media
(x)
Hey Ghouls! Been a While!
Today I'm going to talk about something I've been telling my friends about (though with no nuance, so they always look at my like I've got three heads! Arguably not a bad thing...) for probably the last year. That is... This new, almost obsessive behavior... with conformity. I've mostly seen this on "The Tiktoks" and "The Reels", so this is totally connected with structurally oppressive preferences of the Algorithm.
This may need to be in two parts; Here I know I want to write a big regretfulesc love letter to my community, which even though I adore... I cannot help but feel afraid for the future. I also don't feel like finding sources this time
TW for mentions of ED and Racism
It's no secret that the algorithm pushes videos with thin white people who (seemingly!) overconsume off of websites like Dolls Kill and Shein, or even sites like Depop. There's obviously nothing to feel guilty about with buying things that you need (I've covered this in a past post).
But, I worry about the future of the community. I've seen baby bats ask if they are still goth if they don't wear a white face, I've seen creators tight-lace their corsets so tightly that they could receive bodily damage. I worry about those who develop eating disorders to fit this standard. I also worry about those who believe they have to hide their skin color to be apart of our extremely diverse community. I worry about people who feel that they need to buy into this mass amount of overconsumption to feel "goth enough".
The truth is, this is an arts-based subculture- you can do anything you want with it. It is necessary that we keep our fondness of Life as a cycle, all aspects of death are within that. Within life there is death and within that, there is death, in an endless cycle. But IMO it's more of a prompt than anything, Goth is The People.
But enough of that talk, I mean, I have a whole post (which I should probably update as new information comes to light) about it!
I think that a lot of this prioritizing looking as thin and as pale as possible is really dangerous. I know that it's under this guise of looking "dead, sickly, or ghoulish", but that's honestly such bull. We can look at gothic artist Tim Burton's reasons for his exclusion within his "aesthetic".
Not to mention this criticizing article on Wednesday! (From the Independent)
So, "Get on with it!" I hear you say.
Alright, alright. What does this mean for the future of the goth community? I mean, the culture of each social media garbage app is entirely different. Tiktok is kind of a deep pit that I avoid like the plague for how addictive it is (only for myself to replace it with reels). Instagram reels is honestly the place i have the most beef with.
There's this huge uptick in people minimizing what goth is (some of these people aren't even goths!).
They're the ones who are lowkey hierarchal assholes who think that Trad goth is the only form of gothic expression. (Like these dudes haven't read any gothic literature, written any annoying poetry, contemplated religion, spoken to a goth, or even been to a cemetery!)
So, TLDR, if we are not anti-white supremacist about this whole thing, we could see the next generation fall into consumerist patterns favoring whiteness over the beauty of gothic art.
As always, Thanks for reading!
Let me know if I'm missing anything, or if I should spend more time researching this topic!
Song recommendation; I have been obsessing over this band recently! Genre is like darkwave-alternative rock I suppose.

The Tide of AI
I’ve been working with generative artificial intelligence (AI here) now for several years, trying to understand a bit about how it works, and following discussions by those much more knowledgeable and more concerned about it than I.
My main uses of AI have been to jumpstart my solutions to programming problems, and to answer questions about many different things in a better way than mere search engines. I also use image generating AIs to produce illustrations for some of my favorite science fiction novels.
I have come to some tentative conclusions.
AI is not now conscious in any sense.
AI is not now capable of telling the difference between its training data and the external world.
AI can produce very useful and rapid solutions for me based on solutions that other people have found.
If a solution has not already been found, then AI has some ability to reason its way to a solution.
Such solutions are not always correct. I run into many outright mistakes. Such mistakes can only be fixed by a human expert, but they sometimes still are quite useful as hints towards a correct solution.
AI is improving rapidly.
The better AI gets, the more the human workflow will involve it. And in looking at how others are using AI, particularly in visual art, I can see that future work in many if not most fields of art, science, engineering, and other forms of expertise will involve a continuous dialogue with AI.
And yet, the AI is doing so much work for one behind the scenes, it’s all but impossible to control everything about the solution. For example, in generating illustrations for Jack Vance’s Demon Princes novels, certain idealized images of the characters are created. If Drusilla Wayles is shown, to make her blond not brunette and full-figured not slim, and dressed in any detailed style, requires a fair amount of work in writing more detailed prompts.
I see this as an obstacle to real originality. In other words, the easier it becomes to use AI and the better the solutions are, the more tempting it will become for me, and probably many other people, to use the AI solution. I feel this will interpose a lot of extra work before getting to real originality without, perhaps, the author fully realizing that. And I feel this could lead of sighs of resignation.
That may well make it harder to achieve true originality in many fields.
I plan to try using AI to compose musical scores as MIDI files, and to design new Csound instruments. That will be probably more enlightening for me than fooling around with illustrating some of my favorite stories, although I will keep doing that.
One thing I am looking for is help with pieces I’m working on. Let’s suppose I have code that produces a complete piece of music, but there are problems I don’t see how to fix. I’d like to be able to say something like “the B section is too much like the A and C sections, edit this code to make the B section not such an obvious rehash of the parts of the A and C sections,” and get some code that either does that, or provides a hint for how I can do that.
I will report on my experiences here.

The world is scary and isolating and overwhelming. It's hard to notice all the little ways people help to make positive collective change. But there's an easy way to go hear some of it at any time:
Listen To Wikipedia by Hatnote
Listen to Wikipedia is a generative ambient musical and visual art piece that's been running since July of 2013 based on Wikipedia edits. Considered as a specific song, it has been playing continuously for over a decade.
"Bells are additions, strings are subtractions. There’s something reassuring about knowing that every user makes a noise, every edit has a voice in the roar. (Green circles are anonymous edits and purple circles are bots. White circles are brought to you by Registered Users Like You.)"
Enough people are out there trying to share some understanding of the entire world around us at a fast enough that in can make interesting music. We're not doing this alone. Many hands make lighter work. Wikipedia is a wonder of the modern world because millions of people willed it into existence together, and the act of that creation constantly continues.

Discover Weekly is so weird. Just because I like Joni Mitchell and I also like some classical music does NOT mean I will like some insipid cover of a Joni song by some classical soprano! Just because I like Billy Bragg and Courtney Barnett and the Velvet Underground doesn't mean I'll like some weird recording of A and B covering a song by C!
I like artists for Their Music. The whole deal. Not just their presence in a recording studio or the sound of their voice. What thrills me is Joni doing Little Green - a heartbreakingly gorgeous song she wrote thinking about her daughter she'd had to give up for adoption - or Billy doing Levi Stubbs' Tears, his own particular strongly-accented voice and bravely stand-alone guitar providing the perfectly unexpected background for a poignant story about a woman suffering domestic abuse and finding solace in the music she loves.
What I love about an artist is EVERYTHING about that artist. If you try to check off as many boxes as possible by having one person I love cover a song by someone else, that does not mean I'll like it twice as much as I liked either of those things on their own. The human heart is not a mathematical algorithm.

Artificial Intelligence Revolutionizes the Music World: The Case of "Neural Notes Revolution"
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world, permeating sectors from healthcare to industry, education to transportation. This technology, which aims to replicate and surpass human cognitive abilities, promises to revolutionize the way we live and work.
The applications of AI are numerous and ever-expanding: from medical diagnosis to autonomous driving, data analysis to content creation. A particularly intriguing field is music, where AI is demonstrating remarkable potential.
Recently, there has been much discussion about AI-based music generation platforms like "Suno" and "Udio," accused of violating numerous artists' copyrights to train their algorithms. These controversies highlight the complex ethical and legal issues that AI raises in the artistic field.
In this context, the Italian project "Neural Notes Revolution" emerges, demonstrating how, with the aid of AI programs, the study of algorithms suitable for targeted generation of musical styles, voices, song structures, and with adequate post-processing, it's possible to produce musical pieces of any genre and style, in any language, in relatively short timeframes.
The project also leverages other generative AI platforms such as OpenAI's ChatGPT (Microsoft group, of which Elon Musk was a co-founder), Anthropic's Claude AI, and Google's Gemini. These technologies allow for the generation of texts, both original and based on precise or imaginative prompts, in numerous languages, even using expressions typical of specific localities and dialects.
However, "Neural Notes Revolution" still faces some challenges. The results provided by ChatBOTs require careful verification, and in the music field, generation platforms have significant limitations. In particular, "Suno" and "Udio" lack a precise and rigorous syntax that allows for accurate results. Often, the outcomes are even opposite to those desired, forcing a trial-and-error approach. One of the major limitations is the near-total impossibility of having clear style changes within the same song.
Expected future developments include the ability to modify produced songs in a targeted manner. It would be useful to have separate files for the vocal part, the musical backing, and the lyrics in subtitle format. Moreover, there's hope to be able to modify individual parts of text or music, and above all, to have a correct and rigorously respected syntax for the song structure and use of styles.
The use of these platforms raises several issues. On one hand, they offer new creative possibilities and democratize music production. On the other, they raise concerns about copyright, artistic authenticity, and the future of work in the music industry.
In conclusion, while giving space to creativity, we are still far from competing with the styles, voices, and tones of artists of all time. However, in defense of the "new artists" of the AI era, it must be recognized that creativity and skill are still necessary to produce musical pieces of a certain depth. This is particularly relevant in a modern musical landscape that often offers music devoid of artistic and cultural significance. AI in music thus represents both a challenge and an opportunity, requiring a balance between technological innovation and preservation of human artistic expression.

you know, i’m honestly against people using AI in place of creativity and work even if it’s freelance stuff. I get the appeal, I really do, but having AI replace all creative work it’s just going to suck.
I have gotten to a point where I can immediately recognize an AI generated photo, drawing, or fanfic, because something about it is inherently repetitive, it feels so randomized and calculated all at the same time. It literally feels like how plastic tastes and smells.
Manufactured.
But I feel like we should all collectively not use most of our energy on addressing the problem among us freelance and small creators.
why?
because like I am so fucking scared to just have to sit through any movie that was made from ai.
I am so fucking scared to have to walk through an art exhibit and it’s only filled with AI generated paintings.
I am so fucking scared to look online to only see a I generated drawings.
I’m so fucking scared that the only thing that we will ever get ever again is just blended up original creative work processed and shaped into looking like something new.
I’m afraid that everything we will ever consume again is going to never be new.
I understand that this probably won’t happen but at the same time it is so discouraging as a creative to just go online and see more ai generated shit be more gratifying to people and our consumerist structured algorithms.
This is why I just want to quit any other social media except Tumblr is because their algorithm is so demanding of creative as it is. I’m not here to sell my art to you, i’m not here to fucking conform my art to what gets me the most likes, I fall in and out of things and with the help of friends I can make more consistent projects happen. if I am here to sell my art, I will tell people that I’m here to sell my art, and that’s it.
but that’s different than being controlled by an algorithm that demands me to burn myself out for its profit.
I get it, I really do. It’s gratifying to get big numbers from a lot of people on social media for your creative work, but it’s even more gratifying to be able to create something that other people can interact with that is graspable in concepts and meanings and emotions, because I made it.
I put time into my art.
that’s the best part.
And that’s what is at risk with ai generated creative works.
It is about keeping creatives in jobs, but it also so much more than that. It’s about losing anything original that comes from someone’s deepest depths.
Hey maybe I’ll change my mind one day.
But before that day please please boycott any big corporation creative works that had used ai.
Keep protesting for creatives to keep their jobs.
and keep being patient and educating people who don’t understand how harmful ai generated creative work can be.
Peace and love

Oh yeah it definitely felt drier than usual this year, this doesn't surprise me. @enbymetalhead and @lightineventide found that the "microgenres" were picked from user playlists, ie if a lot of your songs are found on user playlists with the words "pink" "pilates" "princess" well... that's where it comes from. Still AI to an extent, and it definitely would have been much better if there were more curators who cared about music.
Also I've been keeping up with my last.fm and a lot of the songs in my top 100 are just ...not accurate?? They're all songs I like at least, but having looked at my stats I have absolutely no idea what it counts as being "most played" (there's lots that didn't show up at all that should have been well within my top 50 and vice versa)
im genuinely convinced that they used ai for the monthly thing on spotify wrapped. what do you mean may was my "coastal grandmother ukulele oldies" phase. august was "pink pilates princess strut pop??" no one would say that september was my "sweater weather permanent wave indie" moment. no way we waited so long for this. multiple people and i also noticed that it took a few seconds longer than usual to load, maybe im just impatient but i wouldnt be surprised if that was ai preparing like all of it as i clicked through. spotify has been using a lot of ai lately with the playlist making, dj, playlist cover designer and now whatever this ai podcast thing is.
