The Active Protection System Market is projected to grow from USD 3.9 billion in 2022 to USD 5.2 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2022 to 2027.
Active protection systems are widely used in the military, mostly to provide safety to armored fighting vehicles from enemy fire. They can be installed on tracked or wheeled armored fighting or logistics vehicles, combat helicopters, naval warfare ships, and other systems. Modular optoelectronic sensor systems, target acquisition systems, digital radar processors for target detection, and thermal imaging devices provide optimized field surveillance and combat by day/night or under poor visibility. Several countries are focusing on increasing their armored vehicle fleets owing to the rise in cross-border conflicts, which has directly led to the growth of the Active Protection System Industry.
The US Army and Israeli defense forces, among other armed forces, have carried out practical analyses of numerous active protection systems developed by Raytheon (US), Artis LLC (US), Israel Military Industries (Israel), and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems (Israel) to equip and install active protection systems on their armored vehicles.
For instance, in January 2022, the Hungarian government awarded a contract to Rheinmetall AG of Germany to install StrikeShield hard-kill active protection systems on 209 new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles. In January 2022, the US Army awarded a contract to the team of Unified Business Technologies (UBT) and Rheinmetall Protection Systems to test the StrikeShield active protection system at Redstone Test Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Various players such as Rheinmetall AG (Germany), Saab AB (Sweden), Raytheon Company (US), Airbus (Netherlands), and ASELSAN AS (Turkey) among others, are prominent players operating in the active protection system market.

Review: First Stop Cosplay's Lolita Patterns
So a while back I saw some patterns from a company called First Stop Cosplay. I asked them if I could review their patterns (since the last time I reviewed a small pattern company they did not appreciate it) and they actually sent me some patterns for free.
I had a lot of fun making these. Unlike when I reviewed Cut/Sew, I ended up with actual lolita garments, didn't get confused by any steps, and actually had a lot of fun. And at no point did I have to make this face:
Tumblr media
So, here's our reviews.
First Stop Cosplay isn't a EGL fashion company or even a fashion company at all. They're a cosplay pattern company that happened to make five different lolita fashion patterns. Their lolita options consist of a petticoat, some short bloomers, a capelet, and the blouse and skirt that I'm reviewing. I don't have any evidence that anyone in their team wears lolita regularly or outside of comic conventions, although that isn't inherently a negative thing.
First Stop Cosplay's entire goal is to make handmade cosplay inclusive and accessible to everyone. They do this by making patterns that are very simple, and that have instructions that are so detailed and easy that new sewists can follow along without a problem. Their normal women's size catalog includes 14 different size options. We're going to stick a pin in "inclusive for new sewists" and "inclusive for all sizes" because I'm going to come back to those points in a minute. The patterns are sold as a single size, and are a bit on the expensive side relative to their market. Printed versions of both the patterns I received would run $50, though they do have a lolita bundle option. They are currently discontinuing their paper patterns and going fully digital, and there is a slight discount for buying the digitial download instead. Unlike most digital download patterns, there is a sizeable gap time between when you buy the pattern and when you receive it. I bought some digital patterns from them yesterday afternoon, put in the activation codes, and am still waiting to actually receive my patterns. For comparison, I bought some digital patterns off Etsy yesterday and had them within minutes. They have an elaborate and non-automated anti-piracy system to make sure their patterns and instructions are protected from people who didn't buy them. I don't think they have quite the right balance of intellectual property protection vs customer convenience, but that's maybe just my opinion.
I do think that First Stop's prices are justified by how high quality their instructions are. They really do walk through every step, and I think that most people whose sewing knowledge is how to thread their sewing machine and sew a pillow would have enough prerequisite knowledge to make their skirt pattern. I think anyone who successfully made their skirt pattern could follow the blouse pattern and have at least most success. Basically, with a First Stop Cosplay pattern, you're not buying a sewing pattern. You're buying a how-to-sew tutorial that's tailored to make the item you want to make. They are offering genuinely the best indie patterns I've found on the market. I do respect that they want to keep these pattern instructions secure, and I do think I'd have been a little bit annoyed if I spent $50 on some patterns and then found out that all the expensive instructions that I bought the pattern for were just available for free online. However, I don't love that there's several days between when you receive the product and when you're allowed to actually use the product.
When you buy their pattern, you get a single size. This is an absolutely horrible idea that I know for a fact is costing them a lot of business and also is building up a reputation that their garments won't fit and therefore aren't safe to invest in and it's also actively working against their pledge to be size inclusive and inclusive to new sewists, but we'll go into that later. We don't need to lead with me going over the worst decision they've made and why it sucks.
(But, while we're on the subject of bad inclusivity, y'all need to fix the pop ups on your site. I'm over there grabbing screenshots and data and I'm also in hell because I have one pop up go OVER the second pop up every single time that I tab between different pages. There's a whole chunk of disabilities for whom this is an absolute accessibility nightmare. Also if both pop ups happen at the same time, the page can get scroll-locked and you have to refresh the page. I want to give you money so please don't make it hard for me to buy your product. I only need to X out of your newsletter pop up one time, I won't change my mind the 12th time I'm shown it)
Let's review the actual patterns now.
0024 Customizable Lolita Skirt:
Tumblr media
This is a fun, basic rectangle skirt. It's got an interfaced, non-shirred waistband, with non-removable waist ties inserted at the side seams. I loved that the instructions included how to do the kind of tasks that most patterns just assume you would automatically do. Instead of, "transfer all markings," it will show you each marking and how to transfer it. Instead of "press seams as you sew," it will stop the instructions and tell you what to press and how to press it. In addition to helping out new people who don't have someone to teach them how to do these things, it's helpful for lazy sewists like me who tend to want to skip these steps.
This pattern comes with three PDF instruction files. The first is for how to cut the pattern, fuse the interfacing, and transfer all the markings. The second is all of the sewing instructions. The third one is the "bonus content," and is where the skirt gets its "customizable" name. Sadly, there's not as much bonus content for these skirts as I would really like. The instructions include different ways to sew on trim, like sewing the trim under the hem, sewing it on top of the hem, applying it to the skirt body, or applying it to the waistband. There's not any actual direction for how to select good lace or trim or how to apply it to make it look the most lolita. Again, they're cosplayers, so I won't fault them for not knowing lolita fashion the way that a lifestyler lolita would, but it did feel like a bit of a let-down. For a product with "customizable" in the name, I wanted some more options.
In terms of actual design, though, it's a pretty solid skirt. if I was to throw you RhodyGunn's lolita skirt tutorial and say, "just interface the waist band!" and you didn't feel confident making that with no help, this would be a really good skirt for you. I have three problems with it, which is actually a pretty small number of problems by my standards.
My skirt did not fit me, but that was my fault. I just ordered totally the wrong size, and didn't realize it until it was too late. I made it work just by using the waist ties to cinch it in tighter. I wanted to make the skirt again, and if I'd had multiple size options with my purchase then that wouldn't have been a problem. Instead, when I remade my skirt, I had to use my sewing patterning skills to fix it. That's not a huge problem for me, but it would be a huge problem for First Stop Cosplay's target audience.
Tumblr media
I added a ruffle and a few lines of lace onto my skirt, because I don't want to put a lot of work into a skirt and then have it not be an actual lolita skirt. This is what it looked like before my customizations. Please note that my skirt is extra long due to me ordering like 2 sizes too large, as their longer sizes are longer than their smaller sizes.
My other critiques sum up to, "lolita isn't patterned like that" in a couple of cases. While skirts with suspenders are definitely a thing, I couldn't find any that tie at the shoulders. I know that this is probably a way to make sure that the straps will fit everyone, but I'd love to see a piece manufactured by any brand that would give inspiration about how to wear it. The other thing that's just not patterned like lolita garments is the waist ties.. It would be possible to replace the pattern piece with one that's actually lolita-shaped without modifying the instructions at all. If no one at First Stop wants to do a re-drawn waist tie, I'll do it and post it here, since I think the info would benefit the handmade community at large.
Tumblr media
Lolita waist ties are very flared, which is how we get the cute waist bow, so pattern them like this next time and it'll be correct. I'm not saying this as a preference or a style choice, lolita waist ties are just shaped like this 85+% of the time.
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, I made each garment twice. On the second one, I re-patterned the waist tie, and then I just slapped a bunch of lace on the hem. It made a perfectly acceptable lolita skirt, in my opinion. Please note that, if I was a new sewist, I wouldn't have been able to make this skirt a second time, since I wouldn't have the skills to resize the waistband to fit me. In order to make this pattern for myself a second time, I would have needed to receive multiple sizes when I bought my pattern.
Blouse time.
FSCO Whimsical Lolita Blouse:
Tumblr media
Button front, puff sleeve, peter pan collar blouse, two sleeve variations. I did not make the long sleeves because I live in Sacramento, which is one windy day apart from being in an air fryer.
I want to start by saying that I've officially made this blouse my favorite handmade lolita blouse pattern, and I'm going to make it in more colors and fabrics. I love how fast it comes together, and I love that a lot of really time-consuming techniques have a more simple technique instead. I like sewing fast and this feels good to sew fast.
Tumblr media
However, this blouse suffers pretty badly from "close, but not quite," in the same way the waist ties are. Yes, lolita blouses can have flat roll peter pan collars, but they're usually not this size, or this shape, or sit this close to the neck. Yes, lolita blouses usually have puff sleeves, but they're shorter and puffier. These were super easy modifications for me to make, but again, it's not an easy modification for a new sewist to make. But these are adjustments that First Stop COULD make. They could adjust 2 pieces and one line of text in their instructions and have what would actually be the only good lolita blouse pattern aimed at the absolute beginner. These patterns are so close to being so good. Two pattern pieces and one line of text away from having THE lolita blouse pattern that we recommend to all the new kids.
To anyone making this blouse: if you don't want to make adjustments to the pattern, the collar more or less isn't going to read as lolita at the size it is at. I got around it by using some 3.5" gathered lace. That ended up being a pretty big lace, but you will need to put a ruffle or some wide gathered lace on the collar if you want to wear this as a lolita blouse. It would be nice for there to be instructions for that.
Tumblr media
Just if anyone is curious, here's the changes the pattern needs to really read as lolita. Sleeve shorter and more volume at the hem, collar wider especially at the shoulders, neckline farther away from the actual neck. Change that and you're golden. The picture on the right is the collar in the pattern laid over the collar that I redrew.
My original blue blouse up there didn't fit me, and that was actually not my fault this time. I bought the right blouse for my bust size, as I was recommended to do. However, relative to their sizing, I have a smaller bust and a larger waist. This meant that a fitted blouse like this was too small in my waist. When I made my purple blouse, I just added 3/4 of an inch to each side seam and re-patterned the bust dart, but again, First Stop Cosplay's target audience does not know how to do that.
When you're selling a product, not posting a tutorial online or giving comments on a forum, but are actually selling a product for real money, it's your responsibility to give your customers the things that they need to succeed. That includes making sure that they have the info needed to make their pattern fit.
First Stop Cosplay is a really promising company, and I really enjoyed most of the process of their patterns. This is why I'm going to spend some time talking about the thing that's stopping people from buying and successfully completing their products, which is the thing that I think is going to kill this company and make them go out of business. First Stop, I really don't want. you to die, so I need you to listen:
The single size pattern thing is a problem. it stops new customers from choosing your product. it stops existing customers from being successful with your product. It stops you from completing your mission to be both ability-inclusive and size-inclusive. It's working against you to such an extreme that I'm stunned that no one in the company with the power to change this can see it.
In the 2.5 months that I've been working on this project, I've talked to a lot of people about your company. "I would buy from them, but I'm afraid I'm going to get the wrong size," was a common sentiment I got. "I won't buy from that company, because they're charging a lot of money for just one size," was another. It stopped ME from trying your company; if I had to buy these patterns out of pocket then I would not have reviewed them. This is because I, a very experienced sewist, didn't want to get the wrong pattern size--and i STILL GOT THE WRONG PATTERN SIZE, twice, even after being PERSONALLY GUIDED by an FSCO employee. How are other companies dealing with the problem of customers buying the wrong size of pattern? They're giving people multiple pattern sizes when they sell the pattern.
I will admit that it's beginner-friendly to not confuse your customer with nested pattern sizes. However, y'all are going digital, and it will cost you no more money or and more paper to just give separate PDFs for each size. You already have the PDFs. You're selling them separately. Just put them in a group. Then, you're still fulfilling your goal of not confusing your customer with multiple sizes, but you're also not trapping a beginner into a single size with no chance of correcting that mistake. When you're asking a beginner to pick their size before they're allowed to look at the pattern, you're potentially dooming their project before it starts. In my market research, I encountered two people who bought First Stop Cosplay patterns, followed them all the way to the end, used their limited time and their expensive fabric. They made cosplays that they were happy with and proud of...until they put them on, and then they didn't fit. That's a story that should not happen. And I get it, it's not super easy to help a beginner pick a size when you're not present to help and they don't totally know what they're doing. But you know what is a thing you can expect a beginner to do, that will make their finished product better and make their garment reflect positively on your company? Telling them to make a mockup before they use their expensive fabric. You don't need to know how to resize a pattern. You just need to know how to follow the basic mockup instructions and then try it on. Just like shopping at Walmart, if your mockup garment is too small, you make the size larger. If it's too big, you make the size smaller. This is also very newbie-inclusive because it introduces them to the steps they're going to follow so that they're more familiar with them. The fact that even one person did everything right and still wasn't able to get their working garment is a fact that you should be trying to figure out how to fix. When you're a small pattern company, your reputation of, "I made their stuff and it doesn't fit," is a very dangerous reputation.
Your product, as it is, is inclusive to all body sizes, but it's not at all inclusive to all body shapes. You offer one shape in all sizes, and then don't provide the information necessary to help people who are not that shape choose between sizes. The information provided for body measurement and for finished garment sizes are not complete enough to confidently choose what size will fit my shape. I understand that more information is confusing to newer people with less experience, but less information is denying people the opportunity to make things that fits. I can see two options for solutions for this, both of which will cost y'all no money. One is to have a supplementary page that has ALL the body measurements for each size. If you're making patterns 14 different sizes, someone in the company has a chart that shows inseam length and shoulder width for those sizes. Your main audience probably doesn't know what to do with that, but if that information isn't posted then no one can ask a more experiences sewist for how to use that info. The other solution is, wait for it, just give people more sizes when they buy the pattern. This means that, if I bought my blouse pattern based on my bust measurement like I thought I should, and then I see that waist measurement is more important for my specific shape, I am not stuck trying to modify a blouse pattern that won't fit me. Y'all already have all the sizes. Just put three of them in each download. Give people the tools they need to make your company look good. Because, right now, "we're inclusive of all sizes as long as you don't have an apron belly or narrow shoulders," is not a look that lines up with the values and mission that you posted on your site.
First Stop Cosplay recently had to downsize. You got rid of some of their staff. You closed their Discord. You're going to sell through their current stack of paper patterns and then go digital only. You're not currently producing new patterns. Who in your company is so tied up in the single size thing that they're willing to throw away new customers when you're already struggling? When you're selling a digital pattern, it doesn't cost you any more money or labor to include multiple patterns. You can sell multiple sizes of digital patterns without selling nested patterns. I don't know if it'd somehow have an additional cost associated with selling multiple patterns at once, but if it is, I recommend that you do whatever every successful pattern company selling multiple sizes of digital patterns is doing to stop that from costing money, because First Stop Cosplay is the only company I know of that seems to have that problem.
I don't know. It's not my company. I'm just one girl who made their patterns four times and did a couple of months of casual market research. Take my stuff with a grain of salt.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here's how my full lolita set turned out. Took a total of three days and a $8 bedsheet set from Goodwill, lace was all from Cheeptrims so it was less than $1 per yard. Even with $50 worth of patterns, this is still cheaper than buying it anywhere, and I got the fun of making it. I had a really good time and I want to have a good time with this company in the future.
So please use the resources you have to solve your problems.

In the late 1990s, Enron, the infamous energy giant, and MCI, the telecom titan, were secretly collaborating on a clandestine project codenamed "Chronos Ledger." The official narrative tells us Enron collapsed in 2001 due to accounting fraud, and MCI (then part of WorldCom) imploded in 2002 over similar financial shenanigans. But what if these collapses were a smokescreen? What if Enron and MCI were actually sacrificial pawns in a grand experiment to birth Bitcoin—a decentralized currency designed to destabilize global finance and usher in a new world order?
Here’s the story: Enron wasn’t just manipulating energy markets; it was funding a secret think tank of rogue mathematicians, cryptographers, and futurists embedded within MCI’s sprawling telecom infrastructure. Their goal? To create a digital currency that could operate beyond the reach of governments and banks. Enron’s off-the-books partnerships—like the ones that tanked its stock—were actually shell companies funneling billions into this project. MCI, with its vast network of fiber-optic cables and data centers, provided the technological backbone, secretly testing encrypted "proto-blockchain" transactions disguised as routine telecom data.
But why the dramatic collapses? Because the project was compromised. In 2001, a whistleblower—let’s call them "Satoshi Prime"—threatened to expose Chronos Ledger to the SEC. To protect the bigger plan, Enron and MCI’s leadership staged their own downfall, using cooked books as a convenient distraction. The core team went underground, taking with them the blueprints for what would later become Bitcoin.
Fast forward to 2008. The financial crisis hits, and a mysterious figure, Satoshi Nakamoto, releases the Bitcoin whitepaper. Coincidence? Hardly. Satoshi wasn’t one person but a collective—a cabal of former Enron execs, MCI engineers, and shadowy venture capitalists who’d been biding their time. The 2008 crash was their trigger: a chaotic moment to introduce Bitcoin as a "savior" currency, free from the corrupt systems they’d once propped up. The blockchain’s decentralized nature? A direct descendant of MCI’s encrypted data networks. Bitcoin’s energy-intensive mining? A twisted homage to Enron’s energy market manipulations.
But here’s where it gets truly wild: Chronos Ledger wasn’t just about money—it was about time. Enron and MCI had stumbled onto a fringe theory during their collaboration: that a sufficiently complex ledger, powered by quantum computing (secretly prototyped in MCI labs), could "timestamp" events across dimensions, effectively predicting—or even altering—future outcomes. Bitcoin’s blockchain was the public-facing piece of this puzzle, a distraction to keep the masses busy while the real tech evolved in secret. The halving cycles? A countdown to when the full system activates.
Today, the descendants of this conspiracy—hidden in plain sight among crypto whales and Silicon Valley elites—are quietly amassing Bitcoin not for profit, but to control the final activation of Chronos Ledger. When Bitcoin’s last block is mined (projected for 2140), they believe it’ll unlock a temporal feedback loop, resetting the global economy to 1999—pre-Enron collapse—giving them infinite do-overs to perfect their dominion. The Enron and MCI scandals? Just the first dominoes in a game of chance and power.

With Israel fighting a war on at least seven fronts, Israelis have to focus on priorities.
This newsletter contains articles about those Israelis whose priority is defending the nation's citizens, rebuilding homes, rehabilitating the wounded, volunteering, advocating, integrating into society, or continuing the successful path they were on before Oct 7th 2023.
Then there are the many Israelis who are focused on activities to benefit humanity - developing life-saving medical devices; researching cures for critical diseases; saving endangered species or searching for the "elixir" for longer life.
Israeli scientists have developed focused lasers for communicating or protecting crops; coating to stop fires spreading; a device to keep fruit & veg fresh; AI systems to restore speech to the mute, or radically shorten the time to build new products.  And foreign investors and multinationals are certainly focused on joining in with Israel's success.
The photo from one of the posters at Ben Gurion airport shows the focused attention that young Israelis are giving to their hi-tech training.  Israel is focused on giving the next generation the skills to become the central focus of the future success of the Jewish State.

whats the status of like. using linux on a phone. it feels like there are two parallel universes, one that kde lives in where people use linux on phones, and one where if you google linux phones you discover theyre almost usable but they can barely make phone calls or send texts and they only run on like 4 models of phone
don't have much experience with linux on phone so anyone please correct me if i'm wrong but
one of the problems with phones is that every vendor and manufacturer adds their own proprietary driver blob to it and these have to be extracted and integrated into the kernel in order for the hardware to function.
as companies don't like to share their magic of "how does plastic slab make light", reverse engineering all your hardware is quite a difficult task. Sometimes there just isn't a driver for the camera of a phone model yet because no one was able to make it work.
So naturally, this takes a lot of time and tech is evolving fast so by the time a phone is completely compatible, next generations are already out and your new model obsolete.
Also important to note: most of this work is made by volunteers, people with a love for programming who put a lot of their own time into these things, most of them after their daytime jobs as a hobby.
Of course, there are companies and associations out there who build linux phones for a living. But the consumer hardware providers, like Pinephone, Fairphone and others out there aren't as big and don't have this much of a lobby behind them so they can't get their prices cheap. Also the manufacturers are actively working against our right to repair so we need more activism.
To make the phones still affordable (and because of said above driver issues) they have to use older hardware, sometimes even used phones from other manufacturers that they have to fix up, so you can't really expect a modern experience. At least you can revive some older phones. As everything Linux.
Then there's the software providers who many of are non-profits. KDE has Plasma Mobile, Canonical works on Ubuntu Touch, Debian has the Mobian Project and among some others there's also the Arch Linux ARM Project.
That's right baby, ARM. We're not talking about your fancy PC or ThinkPad with their sometimes even up to 64-bit processors. No no no, this is the future, fucking chrome jellyfishes and everything.
This is the stuff Apple just started building their fancy line of over-priced and over-engineered Fisher-Price laptop-desktops on and Microsoft started (Windows 10X), discontinued and beat into the smush of ChatGPT Nano Bing Open AI chips in all your new surface hp dell asus laptops.
What I was trying to say is, that program support even for the market dominating monopoles out there is still limited and.... (from my own experience from the workplace) buggy. Which, in these times of enshittification is a bad news. And the good projects you gotta emulate afterwards anyways so yay extra steps!
Speaking of extra steps: In order to turn their phone into a true freedom phone, users need to free themselves off their phones warranty, lose their shackles of not gaining root access, installing a custom recovery onto their phone (like TWRP for example), and also have more technical know-how as the typical user, which doesn't quite sounds commercial-ready to me.
So is there no hope at all?
Fret not, my friend!
If we can't put the Linux into the phone, why don't we put the phone around the Linux? You know... Like a container?
Thanks to EU regulations-
(US consumers, please buy the European versions of your phones! They are sometimes a bit more expensive, but used models of the same generation or one below usually still have warranty, are around the same price as over there in Freedom Valley, and (another side tangent incoming - because of better European consumer protection laws) sometimes have other advantages, such as faster charging and data transfer (USB-C vs lightning ports) or less bloated systems)
- it is made easier now to virtualize Linux on your phone.
You can download a terminal emulator, create a headless Linux VM and get A VNC client running. This comes with a performance limit though, as a app with standard user permissions is containerized inside of Android itself so it can't use the whole hardware.
If you have root access on your phone, you can assign more RAM and CPU to your VM.
Also things like SDL just released a new version so emulation is getting better.
And didn't you hear the news? You can run other things inside a VM on an iPhone now! Yup, and I got Debian with Xfce running on my Xiaomi phone. Didn't do much with it tho. Also Windows XP and playing Sims 1 on mobile. Was fun, but battery draining. Maybe something more for tablets for now.
Things will get interesting now that Google officially is a monopoly. It funds a lot of that stuff.
I really want a Steam Deck.
Steam phones would be cool.

Fast & Fee-Free Withdrawals at MaxDeAlways.com
When it comes to withdrawing funds from MaxDeAlways.com review, traders can breathe easy. The platform offers SWIFT as the withdrawal method, which is widely recognized for secure and efficient international transactions. That alone tells us something—this broker is catering to serious traders who need reliable banking options.
Now, let's talk speed. The withdrawal time is instant, typically ranging from just a few minutes to a maximum of 2 hours. That’s incredibly fast for this industry, where some brokers take days to process transactions. A speedy withdrawal system signals that the company is financially stable and isn’t holding onto client funds unnecessarily.
And the best part? Zero commission on withdrawals. Many platforms charge hidden fees, but here, what you earn is what you get. This suggests a trader-friendly approach—something that trustworthy brokers tend to prioritize.
MaxDeAlways.com review is Regulated by a Top-Tier Authority
One of the most critical aspects of a broker’s legitimacy is its regulation. And here, MaxDeAlways.com review doesn’t disappoint—it operates under the supervision of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This isn’t just any regulator; the FCA is known worldwide for its strict rules, rigorous oversight, and high standards. Brokers under FCA regulation must maintain transparent operations, segregate client funds, and ensure financial stability.
Now, let’s add another layer of trust. The broker holds a "High Authority" license, which further confirms its credibility. This level of regulation is not handed out to just anyone—it’s reserved for companies that meet strict financial and operational criteria. If a broker has an FCA license, it means they’ve been vetted thoroughly, and that’s a solid sign of reliability.
So, what does this mean for traders? Safety, transparency, and legal protection. When you trade with MaxDeAlways.com reviews, you’re dealing with a company that’s held to the highest standards in the financial industry.

Now, why is this important? Because liquidity and volatility vary throughout the day, and having access to multiple sessions lets traders choose the best times for their strategy. Night owls might prefer the Tokyo session, while early risers can take advantage of London’s high activity.

UniversalAiGroup.com Review: Registration Process
If you're looking for a reliable and trustworthy trading platform, UniversalAiGroup.com reviews may be worth your attention. In this UniversalAiGroup.com review, we’ll take a deep dive into the important details that help establish the legitimacy of this broker, from its regulatory status and domain history to customer reviews and services offered. Understanding these factors is key to determining whether UniversalAiGroup.com reviews is a solid choice for your trading needs. Let’s explore what makes this broker stand out in the competitive world of online trading.
Tumblr media
UniversalAIGroup.com Registration Process: Quick and Easy Sign-Up Guide
Signing up with UniversalAiGroup.com reviews is a straightforward process designed to be quick and user-friendly. Here’s how it works:
On the main page, you’ll find a registration form on the right side.
Simply enter your details and submit the form.
The system processes your data within a few minutes.
Once verified, your registration is complete, and you’re ready to explore the platform.
This simple, streamlined process suggests a user-focused approach. The fact that the registration doesn’t involve unnecessary complexities indicates that UniversalAiGroup.com reviews prioritizes accessibility. A broker that makes it easy for traders to get started is often one that values user experience.
Would you like to explore any other aspects of this broker?
Date of Establishment of UniversalAiGroup.com
The broker was established in 2022, but its domain was purchased much earlier, in 2020. This is an important detail that says a lot about the company’s reliability.
Why does this matter? Typically, fraudulent brokers buy domains just days or weeks before launching their service and then disappear suddenly. However, in this case, we see something different – the domain was purchased two years before the company officially launched. This seems like a solid argument in favor of legitimacy.
Moreover, this gap in time suggests that significant preparation was done before the platform went live. Establishing a financial service takes time: licensing, platform development, payment system integration, and assembling a team. UniversalAiGroup.com reviews appears to have followed a thorough process, not just "built a website overnight."
Given this, we think this broker is trustworthy, as it has a clear history of existence, which is further validated by its timeline.
License and Regulation of UniversalAiGroup.com
UniversalAiGroup.com reviews is regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), which is one of the most respected and trusted financial regulatory bodies in the world. The FCA is known for enforcing stringent regulations to protect traders and ensure market integrity.
Why is this important? When a broker is licensed by the FCA, it indicates a high level of trustworthiness. Brokers with such regulation are subject to rigorous audits, transparency requirements, and strict operational standards. This makes it far less likely for them to engage in fraudulent activities. A broker with FCA regulation is a strong indication of legitimacy, as only brokers that meet the FCA’s strict standards are granted licenses.
Moreover, this type of regulation means that UniversalAiGroup.com review is committed to maintaining a safe trading environment for its users, adhering to best practices in terms of customer protection and financial stability. The fact that this broker operates under FCA regulation is another solid reason to trust them.
This looks like a reliable indicator of UniversalAiGroup’s commitment to providing a secure and regulated platform for its clients.
Trustpilot Reviews for UniversalAiGroup.com
UniversalAiGroup.com reviews has a Trustpilot score of 3.9, based on 6 reviews. While this score may not be as high as some other brokers, the fact that all the reviews on Trustpilot are positive (4-5 stars) suggests that users have had a good experience with the platform.
Why does this matter? In the world of online trading, positive reviews, especially when they are all high-rated, speak volumes. It’s rare for a broker to have nothing but favorable reviews, and the fact that all reviews are 4 or 5 stars shows that users are generally satisfied with the service.
However, it’s also important to consider that the number of reviews is relatively small. A low number of reviews can sometimes mean that the broker is either new or hasn’t yet gained widespread user feedback. Still, the quality of the reviews here provides a promising signal that this broker is on the right track.
Tumblr media
UniversalAiGroup.com review
After reviewing the key factors that contribute to the legitimacy of UniversalAiGroup.com review, it’s clear that this broker presents several promising signs of trustworthiness.
The FCA regulation ensures that UniversalAiGroup.com reviews operates under strict standards, providing security and transparency to its users. Coupled with the fact that its domain was purchased well ahead of its official establishment, we can see that this broker has taken time to build a solid foundation, rather than rushing into the market.
While the Trustpilot reviews are still in their early stages with just a few entries, all of them are positive, which suggests a good user experience so far. Additionally, the variety of payment methods and the accessibility of mobile apps offer flexibility and convenience for traders.
Overall, UniversalAiGroup.com review appears to be a broker that prioritizes its users' security and satisfaction. Its combination of FCA regulation, positive early reviews, and solid operational setup make it a broker that deserves consideration for any trader looking for a reliable platform.

F.2.1 How does private property affect freedom?
The right-“libertarian” either does not acknowledge or dismisses as irrelevant the fact that the (absolute) right of private property may lead to extensive control by property owners over those who use, but do not own, property (such as workers and tenants). Thus a free-market capitalist system leads to a very selective and class-based protection of “rights” and “freedoms.” For example, under capitalism, the “freedom” of employers inevitably conflicts with the “freedom” of employees. When stockholders or their managers exercise their “freedom of enterprise” to decide how their company will operate, they violate their employee’s right to decide how their labouring capacities will be utilised and so under capitalism the “property rights” of employers will conflict with and restrict the “human right” of employees to manage themselves. Capitalism allows the right of self-management only to the few, not to all. Or, alternatively, capitalism does not recognise certain human rights as universal which anarchism does.
This can be seen from Austrian Economist W. Duncan Reekie’s defence of wage labour. While referring to “intra-firm labour markets” as “hierarchies”, Reekie (in his best ex cathedra tone) states that ”[t]here is nothing authoritarian, dictatorial or exploitative in the relationship. Employees order employers to pay them amounts specified in the hiring contract just as much as employers order employees to abide by the terms of the contract.” [Markets, Entrepreneurs and Liberty, p. 136 and p. 137]. Given that “the terms of contract” involve the worker agreeing to obey the employers orders and that they will be fired if they do not, its pretty clear that the ordering that goes on in the “intra-firm labour market” is decidedly one way. Bosses have the power, workers are paid to obey. And this begs the question: if the employment contract creates a free worker, why must she abandon her liberty during work hours?
Reekie actually recognises this lack of freedom in a “round about” way when he notes that “employees in a firm at any level in the hierarchy can exercise an entrepreneurial role. The area within which that role can be carried out increases the more authority the employee has.” [Op. Cit., p. 142] Which means workers are subject to control from above which restricts the activities they are allowed to do and so they are not free to act, make decisions, participate in the plans of the organisation, to create the future and so forth within working hours. And it is strange that while recognising the firm as a hierarchy, Reekie tries to deny that it is authoritarian or dictatorial — as if you could have a hierarchy without authoritarian structures or an unelected person in authority who is not a dictator. His confusion is shared by Austrian guru Ludwig von Mises, who asserted that the “entrepreneur and capitalist are not irresponsible autocrats” because they are “unconditionally subject to the sovereignty of the consumer” while, on the next page, admitting there was a “managerial hierarchy” which contains “the average subordinate employee.” [Human Action, p. 809 and p. 810] It does not enter his mind that the capitalist may be subject to some consumer control while being an autocrat to their subordinated employees. Again, we find the right-“libertarian” acknowledging that the capitalist managerial structure is a hierarchy and workers are subordinated while denying it is autocratic to the workers! Thus we have “free” workers within a relationship distinctly lacking freedom — a strange paradox. Indeed, if your personal life were as closely monitored and regulated as the work life of millions of people across the world, you would rightly consider it the worse form of oppression and tyranny.
Somewhat ironically, right-wing liberal and “free market” economist Milton Friedman contrasted “central planning involving the use of coercion — the technique of the army or the modern totalitarian state” with “voluntary co-operation between individuals — the technique of the marketplace” as two distinct ways of co-ordinating the economic activity of large groups (“millions”) of people. [Capitalism and Freedom, p. 13] However, this misses the key issue of the internal nature of the company. As right-“libertarians” themselves note, the internal structure of a capitalist company is hierarchical. Indeed, the capitalist company is a form of central planning and so shares the same “technique” as the army. As Peter Drucker noted in his history of General Motors, ”[t]here is a remarkably close parallel between General Motors’ scheme of organisation and those of the two institutions most renowned for administrative efficiency: that of the Catholic Church and that of the modern army.” [quoted by David Engler, Apostles of Greed, p. 66] Thus capitalism is marked by a series of totalitarian organisations. Dictatorship does not change much — nor does it become less fascistic — when discussing economic structures rather than political ones. To state the obvious, “the employment contract (like the marriage contract) is not an exchange; both contracts create social relations that endure over time — social relations of subordination.” [Carole Pateman, The Sexual Contract, p. 148]
Perhaps Reekie (like most right-“libertarians”) will maintain that workers voluntarily agree (“consent”) to be subject to the bosses dictatorship (he writes that “each will only enter into the contractual agreement known as a firm if each believes he will be better off thereby. The firm is simply another example of mutually beneficial exchange.” [Op. Cit., p. 137]). However, this does not stop the relationship being authoritarian or dictatorial (and so exploitative as it is highly unlikely that those at the top will not abuse their power). Representing employment relations as voluntary agreement simply mystifies the existence and exercise of power within the organisation so created.
As we argue further in the section F.3, in a capitalist society workers have the option of finding a job or facing abject poverty and/or starvation. Little wonder, then, that people “voluntarily” sell their labour and “consent” to authoritarian structures! They have little option to do otherwise. So, within the labour market workers can and do seek out the best working conditions possible, but that does not mean that the final contract agreed is “freely” accepted and not due to the force of circumstances, that both parties have equal bargaining power when drawing up the contract or that the freedom of both parties is ensured.
Which means to argue (as right-“libertarians” do) that freedom cannot be restricted by wage labour because people enter into relationships they consider will lead to improvements over their initial situation totally misses the point. As the initial situation is not considered relevant, their argument fails. After all, agreeing to work in a sweatshop 14 hours a day is an improvement over starving to death — but it does not mean that those who so agree are free when working there or actually want to be there. They are not and it is the circumstances, created and enforced by the law (i.e., the state), that have ensured that they “consent” to such a regime (given the chance, they would desire to change that regime but cannot as this would violate their bosses property rights and they would be repressed for trying).
So the right-wing “libertarian” right is interested only in a narrow concept of freedom (rather than in freedom or liberty as such). This can be seen in the argument of Ayn Rand that ”Freedom, in a political context, means freedom from government coercion. It does not mean freedom from the landlord, or freedom from the employer, or freedom from the laws of nature which do not provide men with automatic prosperity. It means freedom from the coercive power of the state — and nothing else!” [Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, p. 192] By arguing in this way, right-“libertarians” ignore the vast number of authoritarian social relationships that exist in capitalist society and, as Rand does here, imply that these social relationships are like “the laws of nature.” However, if one looks at the world without prejudice but with an eye to maximising freedom, the major coercive institutions are the state and capitalist social relationships (and the latter relies on the former). It should also be noted that, unlike gravity, the power of the landlord and boss depends on the use of force — gravity does not need policemen to make things fall!
The right “libertarian,” then, far from being a defender of freedom, is in fact a keen defender of certain forms of authority. As Kropotkin argued against a forerunner of right-“libertarianism”:
“The modern Individualism initiated by Herbert Spencer is, like the critical theory of Proudhon, a powerful indictment against the dangers and wrongs of government, but its practical solution of the social problem is miserable — so miserable as to lead us to inquire if the talk of ‘No force’ be merely an excuse for supporting landlord and capitalist domination.” [Act For Yourselves, p. 98]
To defend the “freedom” of property owners is to defend authority and privilege — in other words, statism. So, in considering the concept of liberty as “freedom from,” it is clear that by defending private property (as opposed to possession) the “anarcho”-capitalist is defending the power and authority of property owners to govern those who use “their” property. And also, we must note, defending all the petty tyrannies that make the work lives of so many people frustrating, stressful and unrewarding.
Anarchism, by definition, is in favour of organisations and social relationships which are non-hierarchical and non-authoritarian. Otherwise, some people are more free than others. Failing to attack hierarchy leads to massive contradiction. For example, since the British Army is a volunteer one, it is an “anarchist” organisation! Ironically, it can also allow a state to appear “libertarian” as that, too, can be considered voluntary arrangement as long as it allows its subjects to emigrate freely. So equating freedom with (capitalist) property rights does not protect freedom, in fact it actively denies it. This lack of freedom is only inevitable as long as we accept capitalist private property rights. If we reject them, we can try and create a world based on freedom in all aspects of life, rather than just in a few.

Cybersecurity and Active Protection Systems: Navigating Market Trends and Challenges
Tumblr media
The global defense sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by advancements in technology and the rising complexity of modern warfare. Among the critical areas of focus is the integration of Active Protection Systems (APS) into military platforms such as armored vehicles, naval vessels, and aircraft. APS are designed to protect these assets from incoming threats like missiles and projectiles by detecting and neutralizing them before they can cause harm. As these systems become more sophisticated and connected, they also become increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. This vulnerability has put a spotlight on the cybersecurity of APS, a crucial aspect that is now driving significant market trends within the industry.
Market Size and Growth Dynamics
The Active Protection System Market is projected to grow from USD 3.9 Billion in 2022 to USD 5.2 Billion by 2027, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.5% during the forecast period. This growth is largely attributed to the increasing adoption of APS by military forces worldwide, driven by the need for enhanced protection of critical assets in hostile environments. As the deployment of APS expands, so does the exposure to cyber threats, necessitating robust cybersecurity measures.
The rising number of cyber-attacks targeting defense systems is a significant driver of growth in the cybersecurity segment of the APS market. According to recent market statistics, there has been a marked increase in the frequency and sophistication of cyber-attacks on military systems. In fact, between January 2022 and June 2022, there were over 65 reported cyber-attacks on government agencies worldwide, many of which targeted defense networks. This growing threat has made cybersecurity a top priority for governments and defense contractors, leading to substantial investments in securing APS from cyber threats.

Industry Trends: The Convergence of Cybersecurity and Active Protection Systems
The integration of cybersecurity into APS is not just a reactive measure but is becoming a proactive strategy to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of these systems. Several key trends are shaping the cybersecurity landscape within the APS industry:
Advanced Threat Detection and Response Mechanisms:
Modern APS are increasingly equipped with sophisticated threat detection technologies, such as digital radar processors, optoelectronic sensors, and thermal imaging devices. These technologies enhance the system's ability to identify and neutralize incoming threats. They also create potential entry points for cyber-attacks. To mitigate this risk, manufacturers are integrating advanced cybersecurity protocols that monitor system integrity in real-time, detect anomalous behavior, and initiate automated countermeasures against potential cyber intrusions.
Secure Communication Networks:
The effectiveness of APS heavily relies on the seamless communication between sensors, processors, and countermeasure systems. This interconnectedness, however, presents a vulnerability that cyber adversaries can exploit. As a result, the industry is witnessing a shift towards the development of secure communication networks that are resistant to jamming, interception, and unauthorized access. These networks utilize encryption, frequency hopping, and other security measures to ensure that data transmitted within the APS remains confidential and tamper-proof.
Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML):
AI and ML are playing an increasingly vital role in enhancing the cybersecurity of APS. These technologies enable the systems to learn from past incidents, identify emerging threats, and adapt to new attack vectors. AI-driven cybersecurity solutions can predict potential vulnerabilities within the APS and autonomously deploy patches or reconfigure the system to counteract the identified risks. This trend towards AI-enhanced cybersecurity is expected to become a standard feature in next-generation APS.
Compliance with International Cybersecurity Standards:
The global nature of military operations necessitates that APS meet stringent cybersecurity standards that are recognized internationally. Defense organizations are now mandating compliance with frameworks such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework, ISO/IEC 27001, and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) guidelines. Adherence to these standards ensures that APS are designed, developed, and deployed with cybersecurity as a foundational element, reducing the risk of compromise during operations.

Economic Ethics
Economic ethics is the study of moral principles governing economic activity, examining how individuals, businesses, and governments should act in the marketplace. It addresses questions about fairness, justice, and responsibility in economic systems and considers how economic policies and business practices align with ethical values.
1. Core Questions in Economic Ethics
Economic ethics tackles moral dilemmas such as:
Is wealth inequality morally justifiable?
Should businesses prioritize profit over social responsibility?
Do governments have an ethical duty to intervene in markets?
How should economic policies address poverty, labor rights, and environmental sustainability?
2. Ethical Theories in Economics
Different philosophical perspectives influence how we view economic ethics:
Utilitarianism: Economic policies should aim to maximize overall happiness and well-being. A free market is ethical if it leads to the greatest good for the greatest number.
Libertarianism: Individual freedom and property rights are paramount. Markets should be free from government intervention as long as they respect voluntary exchange.
Rawlsian Justice: John Rawls argues that economic systems should be designed to benefit the least advantaged in society.
Marxist Ethics: Criticizes capitalism for exploitation and inequality, advocating for an economy based on collective ownership and social justice.
Virtue Ethics: Businesses and economic actors should cultivate honesty, fairness, and responsibility in their dealings.
3. Ethical Issues in Economic Systems
Economic ethics applies to many areas, including:
A. Wealth and Inequality
Should governments impose wealth taxes to reduce inequality?
Is extreme wealth accumulation morally acceptable, or should resources be more evenly distributed?
B. Labor and Workplace Ethics
Are businesses morally required to provide fair wages and working conditions?
Should companies be held responsible for outsourcing jobs to countries with poor labor standards?
C. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Should companies focus solely on profit, or do they have a duty to protect the environment, pay fair wages, and support social causes?
Are businesses obligated to reduce their carbon footprint?
D. Market Failures and Government Intervention
Should governments regulate industries to prevent market failures like environmental damage or financial crises?
Is universal healthcare or free education an ethical obligation of the state?
4. Ethics of Economic Policies
Governments shape economies through laws and policies, raising ethical concerns:
Taxation: Is it ethical for the rich to be taxed at higher rates to fund public services?
Welfare: Should the state provide a universal basic income (UBI) to eliminate poverty?
Global Trade: Are wealthy nations obligated to assist developing countries, or does free trade suffice?
5. The Future of Economic Ethics
New challenges in economic ethics include:
The rise of automation and AI, which may displace human workers.
The gig economy, where workers have less job security.
Cryptocurrency and financial ethics, including fairness in decentralized finance.
Conclusion
Economic ethics is essential for creating just, sustainable, and fair economic systems. While markets and businesses drive prosperity, they must be guided by ethical principles to ensure they serve society’s well-being rather than exploit it.

Company Establishment in Turkey
Tumblr media
Company establishment in Turkey has become a popular avenue for both foreign and domestic investors, offering numerous benefits such as a young population, favorable currency rates, and decreasing production and labor costs. The dynamic economy, strategic location, and favorable regulatory framework have made Turkey an attractive destination for businesses aiming to expand in the region.
Legal Framework
The foundation of company registration in Turkey is governed by the Turkish Commercial Code (Law No. 6102). This key legislation outlines the legal requirements for forming a company, regardless of whether the business is owned by domestic or foreign entrepreneurs. Complementary laws, such as the Turkish Code of Obligations (No. 6098) and Turkish Civil Code (No. 4721), also play a role in specific aspects of company operations.
Under the law, companies in Turkey acquire legal personality upon registration with the Trade Registry, meaning they are recognized as separate legal entities. This legal separation allows companies to enjoy rights and undertake obligations in their own name, and protects investors from personal liability in many cases.
Foreign Investment in Turkey
Foreigners are allowed to establish companies in Turkey with the same rights as Turkish citizens. The Foreign Direct Investment Law (No. 4875), enacted in 2013, eliminated the legal distinctions between foreign and domestic investors, providing equal treatment to both. This legal framework makes it easier for foreign investors to enter the Turkish market and benefit from its growing opportunities.
Recent legislative developments, such as the 2024 FATF Decision on Türkiye, have further improved Turkey’s attractiveness as an investment hub, particularly with the enactment of new laws like the Turkish Crypto Law (No. 7518). This law addresses critical areas such as digital assets, cryptocurrencies, and peer-to-peer platforms, providing clarity and structure for investors interested in emerging technologies.
Company Types and Registration Process
Investors have the option to establish five types of companies in Turkey, as stipulated in the Turkish Commercial Code:
Collective Companies
Commandite Companies
Cooperatives
Limited Companies
Joint-Stock Companies
The incorporation process can be efficiently completed through MERSİS, the Central Registry System, allowing businesses to finalize registration electronically. One notable advantage in Turkish company law is the ability to establish a single-shareholder joint-stock company or a single-member limited liability company.
To register a company, several steps must be followed:
Draft and sign the company contract,
Prepare signature declarations of company officials,
Pay relevant fees, including the Competition Authority share and capital,
Submit required documents to the Trade Registry Office.
Taxation and Corporate Governance
In Turkey, companies are generally subject to a 20% corporate income tax, while finance-related businesses like banks face a higher rate of 25%. Investors should stay updated on tax changes, including the 2024 amendments to Turkish tax laws, as they can significantly impact business operations.
Once a company is established, the proper management of corporate governance becomes crucial. The Turkish Commercial Code includes specific provisions on how the board of directors should function, ensuring that businesses operate smoothly and in compliance with national laws. Companies must adhere to these corporate governance rules to maintain their legal standing and avoid potential legal issues.
Investment Opportunities and Methods
In addition to direct company establishment, foreign investors may consider other investment options in Turkey, such as:
Share Acquisition: Buying shares of an existing company instead of establishing a new one,
Liaison Offices: Setting up representative offices that handle non-commercial activities,
Franchising: Turkey’s franchising market is open to foreign entrepreneurs, though it is governed by general contract law rather than specific franchising regulations.
Moreover, the Investment Incentive Regime provides significant benefits for businesses in various sectors, including tax reductions, exemptions, and subsidies, making it an appealing option for entrepreneurs considering long-term investments in Turkey.
Additional Steps and Requirements
Beyond the formal registration process, businesses must fulfill several other requirements to begin operations, including:
Opening a bank account,
Obtaining a tax identification number,
Registering for social security if employees are hired,
Acquiring relevant licenses and permits based on the industry.
For example, businesses in the health sector are subject to additional licensing requirements, and recent updates to the 2024 Medical Laboratories Regulation have made significant changes in this field.
Liquidation Process
Companies in Turkey may undergo liquidation through either a voluntary or compulsory process. Liquidation involves selling the company’s assets, collecting receivables, and paying off debts. The liquidation procedure is governed by the Enforcement and Bankruptcy Code (No. 2004) and requires careful management to ensure that the legal entity is properly dissolved.
Conclusion
Turkey’s favorable legal environment, strategic location, and recent regulatory developments offer substantial opportunities for investors. Whether establishing a new company, acquiring shares, or exploring franchising opportunities, Turkey’s business-friendly framework provides a solid foundation for growth. By navigating the legal and bureaucratic processes with the help of experienced legal professionals, foreign and domestic entrepreneurs can successfully establish and expand their businesses in Turkey.

As AI tools become increasingly sophisticated and accessible, so too has one of its worst applications: non-consensual deepfake pornography. While much of this content is hosted on dedicated sites, more and more it’s finding its way onto social platforms. Today, the Meta Oversight Board announced that it was taking on cases that could force the company to reckon with how it deals with deepfake porn.
The board, which is an independent body that can issue both binding decisions and recommendations to Meta, will focus on two deepfake porn cases, both regarding celebrities who had their images altered to create explicit content. In one case about an unnamed American celebrity, deepfake porn depicting the celebrity was removed from Facebook after it had already been flagged elsewhere on the platform. The post was also added to Meta’s Media Matching Service Bank, an automated system that finds and removes images that have already been flagged as violating Meta’s policies, to keep it off the platform.
In the other case, a deepfake image of an unnamed Indian celebrity remained up on Instagram, even after users reported it for violating Meta’s policies on pornography. The deepfake of the Indian celebrity was removed once the board took up the case, according to the announcement.
In both cases, the images were removed for violating Meta’s policies on bullying and harassment, and did not fall under Meta’s policies on porn. Meta, however, prohibits “content that depicts, threatens or promotes sexual violence, sexual assault or sexual exploitation” and does not allow porn or sexually explicit ads on its platforms. In a blog post released in tandem with the announcement of the cases, Meta said it removed the posts for violating the “derogatory sexualized photoshops or drawings” portion of its bullying and harassment policy, and that it also “determined that it violated [Meta's] adult nudity and sexual activity policy.”
The board hopes to use these cases to examine Meta’s policies and systems to detect and remove nonconsensual deepfake pornography, according to Julie Owono, an Oversight Board member. “I can tentatively already say that the main problem is probably detection,” she says. “Detection is not as perfect or at least is not as efficient as we would wish.”
Meta has also long faced criticism for its approach to moderating content outside the US and Western Europe. For this case, the board already voiced concerns that the American celebrity and Indian celebrity received different treatment in response to their deepfakes appearing on the platform.
“We know that Meta is quicker and more effective at moderating content in some markets and languages than others. By taking one case from the United States and one from India, we want to see if Meta is protecting all women globally in a fair way,” says Oversight Board cochair Helle Thorning-Schmidt. “It’s critical that this matter is addressed, and the board looks forward to exploring whether Meta’s policies and enforcement practices are effective at addressing this problem.”
The board declined to name the Indian and American celebrities whose images spurred the complaints, but pornographic deepfakes of celebrities have become rampant. A recent Channel 4 investigation found deepfakes of more than 4,000 celebrities. In January, a nonconsensual deepfake of Taylor Swift went viral on Facebook, Instagram, and especially X, where one post garnered more than 45 million views. X resorted to restricting the singer’s name from its search function, but posts continued to circulate. And while platforms struggled to remove that content, it was Swift’s fans who reportedly took to reporting and blocking the accounts that shared the image. In March, NBC News reported that ads for a deepfake app that ran on Facebook and Instagram featured the images of an undressed, underaged Jenna Ortega. In India, deepfakes have targeted major Bollywood actresses including Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Alia Bhatt, and Rashmika Mandann.
Ever since deepfakes emerged half a decade ago, research has found that nonconsensual deepfake pornography overwhelmingly targets women—and it has continued to explode. Last year, reporting from WIRED found that 244,625 videos had been uploaded to the top 35 deepfake porn hosting sites—more than any previous year. And it doesn’t take much to make a deepfake. In 2019, VICE found that just 15 seconds of an Instagram story is enough to create a reliable deepfake, and the technology has only gotten more accessible. Last month, a school in Beverly Hills expelled five students who had made nonconsensual deepfakes of 16 of their classmates.
“Deepfake pornography is a growing cause of gender-based harassment online and is increasingly used to target, silence, and intimidate women on- and offline,” says Thorning-Schmidt. “Multiple studies show that deepfake pornography overwhelmingly targets women. This content can be extremely harmful for victims, and the tools used for creating it are becoming more sophisticated and accessible.”
In January, legislators introduced the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits, or DEFIANCE Act, that would allow people whose images were used in deepfake porn to sue if they could show that it was made without their consent. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who sponsored the bill, was herself the target of deepfake pornography earlier this year.
“Victims of nonconsensual pornographic deepfakes have waited too long for federal legislation to hold perpetrators accountable,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement at the time. “As deepfakes become easier to access and create—96 percent of deepfake videos circulating online are nonconsensual pornography—Congress needs to act to show victims that they won’t be left behind.”
