yeah so basically the show opens with him falling off the cliff then he wakes up in mxy's ritual literally in episode 1. and then in episode 2 he collapses after the kids were night hunting and they ran into jc and lwj recognised him and then the next thirty or so episodes are basically one long flashback from arriving at the cloud recesses to the cliff again

and then at that point it shifts to him waking up at the cloud recesses 16 years in the future bc lwj dragged him there after he collapsed and the last 17 episodes are the present-day timeline up to jgy's whole temple thing + the "ambiguous ending" that really isn't that ambiguous at all they just had to get the relationship past the censors

Ok so obviously y/n and cillian met in the early 2000s (you can make up how they met)

papa nolan knows that y/n is talking to a boy but he doesn’t know it’s mr. ‘my eyes aren’t even that blue’ so when y/n tells papa nolan that her bf is coming over for dinner, he’s preparing to meet so douche bag who says his favorite movie is pulp fiction or fight club (nothing wrong with that, but the film bros make me want to gauge my eyes out)

anyways, cillian shows up and ofc they get along great <3

after cillian and y/n are now OFFICIAL official obviously the press asks about what papa nolan thinks and if they get along

As we all already know, most of the characters in BSD, especially ability users, are based on real life authors. Stormbringer explicitly stated that bsd!Lippmann was "an extremely powerful skill user" so he must be based on someone. And guess what? There happens to be a writer with the exact name as his.

Walter Lippmann was an American journalist, politician, and writer. He was deemed as "the most gifted and influential American political journalist of the twentieth century". His works mostly took the theme of public relations and stuff. Sounds familiar?

I'd like to add this part from the etymology section of his(bsd) wiki btw, just in case you didn't know.

Does it end there? No, not quite.

Let's take a look at his most popular work; Public Opinion.

People, generally, have some sort of "persona" of themselves that they would try to plant on other people's minds. Kinda like the Japanese "three faces" proverb, you may say. And how do they achieve it? By only presenting that persona; by masking; by acting.

Simply said, him being an actor might be a reference to (or a representation of) that human nature which P.O. talks of. An actor acts—they dive into the role of another character that's not them. (Which, when you think about it, is just what us humans do on a daily basis, except they do it professionally and for a living, which when you think about it again—)

Mr. Lippmann also published books titled "A Preface to Politics" and "A Preface to Morals" which is....interesting.

Okay, "preface" and "face" technically are different. Though they still share somewhat a similar meaning.

But hear me out. Let's go back to the persona thing. Generally, what people would want to be perceived as is as the perfect, ideal versions of themselves. To make that happen, they would have to put on a good first impression. And what's usually the first thing that people notice about a person? Correct—their appearance; their face.

Lippmann(bsd) was multiple times described as "perfect" (like okay asagiri, he's pretty, we get it), especially regarding his looks (and capabilities). See what I'm saying?

Lippmann was the stage face, the public image of the Port Mafia. He was the preface to the Port Mafia. He created the pictures in people's head of the Port Mafia.

As a verb, however, "face" has another meaning:

He negotiated with front companies, met and talked with political figures, and even dealt with the press if push came to shove.

I feel like this might be merely a coincidence or a pun, though. But the fact that his field of work in the Port Mafia was specifically negotiating with the "real world" is definitely not something Asagiri just pulled out of thin air—or so I believe to be the case, at least, having read this paragraph.

austin is currently dating kaia gerber and has been since december of 2021! i'm working on a masterpost timeline of their relationship which will likely take...a while. but in the meantime the basics are that they like to make out in public while also being quite the private couple.

austin is close friends with ashley tisdale, and has been since the two of them met filming the movie aliens in the attic in new zealand in 2008. he's 'uncle austin' to her little girl jupiter, and they're also distant cousins!

I'm unsure if links work in asks, but sometiktoksarevalid posted on June 24 - a really neat video by the NY Historical Society with the curator talking about a piece by an indigenous artist - a plague mask inscribed with diseases - and I thought of your dissertation and thought you might find it neat!

Thanks anon! I don't know if links work in tumblr asks -- it used to just eat posts that had links in them, it probably still does. Anyway the post is here if people are interested. I struggle with video media a great deal so it's a bummer there's nothing written about this (I looked, it appears it's video only) but it's a fascinating work.

It's a little outside my wheelhouse because my Master's work was on theatrical masking in specific, but the roots of the mask as an object seem to lie -- there's debate about this -- in extremely ancient cultures venerating prey animals and/or ancestors. Mask usage outside of theatre varies greatly but often relates in some way to the continuity of history. Ancient Romans would hold funeral processions with actors in masks portraying the dead, some ancient South American cultures "oversculpted" the skulls of ancestors, encrusting them with precious stones to venerate them, and even seemingly non-related traditions often involve similar ideas. A common sentiment about Japanese Noh theatrical masks is that you don't truly have a "face for the mask" until you have been a performer for decades and steeped yourself fully in the tradition.

Pulling a very European plague mask into an Indigenous artistic tradition in this way is a compelling method of linking colonialist and indigenous history, and it darkly points up the way disease and genocide often walk together. It's a truly interesting and beautiful piece.

Sasuke's actor is actually played by Shisui's actor's little brother and it's this running joke that he likes Itachi's actor so much more 😂 (ino's actor taking insult to this and wanting her dad to take shisui home with them for real)

Itachi's mother is actually mikoto's actress who was the ideal casting but wouldn't let her son, who did adverts and stuff as a child model, attend the set without her... She makes filming a bit of a nightmare

Kakashi goes full Robert Patterson and starts wildly lying in interviews, his character was supposed to be way more intimidating, like a proper military hardass, but this is what you get when you cast an indie actor who proceeds to wear the strangest face coverings to all promotions (including a paper bag with cut out eyes to "preserve Kakashi's modesty") (the mask was also the actors idea, citing it was mysterious and dehumanising to his character... Only to later reveal it's because he didn't want to take his lipring out)

Kisame spends about 6 hours in hair and makeup every morning and he has to wear one of those huge cgi suits to make him taller (like Beast in live action beauty and the beast) and the struggle to take him seriously is REAL

Kana the crow... Is this huge green lump that shisui has to talk to so seriously, like a bull machine, and Akira is this stuffed green puppet lmao Kakashi please stop doing a David Attenborough commentary impression off camera

Danzo's actor was a huge heartthrob when he was younger and everyone who recognises him is both impressed and horrified at the transformation

Fugaku's actor becomes a meme for being photographed at several rallies standing off with police only to get cast as a Shinobi cop 😂

Sarutobi's actor is the guy they ALWAYS cast to play Old Wise Man (no one is quite sure what he did before he was old enough for these roles)

Tenzo's actor is a famous singer and this is his - very unexpected - breakout role and his fans almost break the barrier at the red carpet when he walks out

You know i don't believe john is dead, it feels unsatisfying for him to have died like that .. but idk what to expect if he is .. in fact alive ..

several people ive talked to on the official server justifiably mentioned that if john was alive he would not be able to shut up about it and we would have already noticed something.. and while this is true ... he is still a really talented actor in canon so .. who knows some idea for a "Juniper come back" would be : could he be the phantom ? (unlikely) could he have possibly had a change of heart at the end of rising phoenix and be like "so zor betrayed me, ill show them" and have sympathy for phoenix ??

but my favorite idea would be that a surviving juniper would be a ... menace in another way .. imagine this egocentric man that think he is better than everyone, surviving this would give him ideas .. would he think he is like phoenix now ?? maybe he would think he is invisible now ?? maybe even better than them !

i think it would be funny for a failed villain wannabe to become a hero wannabe and also fail that .. like he stays phoenix rival but in a different way

I saw the art prompt post by @egganonman and whipped this up real quick. It's not a drawing but writing something felt more comfortable to me.

It's a short story about the recent goings-on without any pov. It was interesting to write, but still fun!

The entire Void erupted in chaos the moment the new interaction appeared on the screen.

Several Anons started to yell. They yelled about their choice, or how to choose, or their theories.

Some Anons chose too soon for their liking and started to second-guess themselves. Had they made the right decision? Would Hetch end up dead because of their choice? There was too much uncertainty here, but they had already chosen.

Others silently voted and slinked back into the shadows. Some thought they were too quick to choose and regretted it. Others had full faith in their decision but were happy to listen to others reasons why they picked otherwise. None of them spoke a word about it.

The final group of Anons decided to wait. They had about twenty-four hours to think things through, and they were going to use that time to their advantage.

A handful of Anons began talking about it with each other. They tried guessing the pros and cons of each choice and how that would weigh in on the actor’s continued safety. Several made extremely good points.

‘Can someone show me the vote?’ an Anon asked. ‘I don’t want to vote yet and I want to see where people are leaning.’

“Take the Mask” 7.5% / “Fight for Freedom” 92.5%

Fifty-three votes within two hours. It was obvious that the viewers wanted Hetch to fight.

As the Anons and other intangible viewers continued to talk about their choices and what those choices would mean, the screen updated.

There was still some yelling, but everyone had mostly quieted down with the update.

Someone made a few verbal jabs at the Founder. Another had calculated the years between 2001 and ‘present day’. A third made a joke about CelestiHetch and a fourth brought up Hetch being Bi.

But there was still a choice to be made. Lives to tamper with. Actors to save.

I can't post images on Anon and don't want to send this on main, but I have a screenshot of a note that, for several months, was listed in the 'Trivia' section of Adam Taurus's page on the Villains Wiki, which said "Adam's goals reflect that of certain real life groups in America in the 2010's, that claim to want equality when in fact they want control" iirc I don't remember word for word, point is, it was very obviously claiming that pro-racial justice groups are trying to take over through terrorism "just like the White Fang"

And I once received a long barrage of anonymous asks from somebody yelling at me that the White Fang arc wasn't at all racist, it was ACKSHULLY a "brave" and "Well written" story the Heroes at Rooster Teeth were telling, admitting to the "Unpopular Truth" that the Black Panthers and BLM were "violent reverse-racist terrorist groups" and he literally sent me like twenty asks vomiting genuine qanon shit into my inbox all about how evil the Black Panthers and BLM are and how the Noble Brave Heroic Rooster Teeth was "speaking truth the rabid SJW's don't want to hear" and "admitting things the Left doesn't want anyone to know" and they were PROUD OF ROOSTER TEETH FOR DOING IT

Meanwhile I *constantly* see people of color in the fndm get shut down, silenced, invalidated, talked over, smeared, harassed, lied about - all because they criticized the racist writing in rwby and particularly the White Fang. And he and ALL his Rooster Teeth buddies have twenty years of video evidence of Rooster Teeth's content in which they're ALL fucking racist (the vast majority of RWBY's controlling creative team being comprised of Rooster Teeth management and "talent" and therefore having been prominent on-screen members of the team while they all have a grand old racist time togehter)

So yeah the White Fang arc is mind-staggeringly racist ON PAPER, two hundred times worse to watch it play out in execution, written by an openly racist asshole and produce by his Buddies who run an openly racist studio, and adored everywhere by unabashedly racist fans who literally apply the extreme copaganda found in the show to the real life people groups the writers based the White Fang and Faunus on.

i agree that the podcast really is so interesting — and imo it's a lot of plain gossip and tv criticism masked as "professional insight", which i live for lmao — but there are times she is really too much... she often mocks or eye-rolls things in a way that, again, doesn't feel constructive and comes off as very rude. mean girl energy. it also bothers me how she will talk at richard instead of engaging in a back and forth, and sometimes that turns into an episode in which she speaks 80% of the time. then again, as content cycles throughout the year, sometimes what's on/hot atm is just more in her wheelhouse than his, so we just have to wait for new taskmaster, new bbc comedies, new doctor who, whatever interests him, and then hopefully he'll have even more opportunities to shine... i do cherish when he gets a chance to speak lmao

but fr take a shot every time she says "a friend of mine who works at _______ told me blah blah"

i'll work on tracking that down!! it would be fun to watch more of them 😋

you know how once you notice an actor then suddenly you start to see them everywhere? (especially on uk tv which is not as big a pool as you'd think it would be...) that was me and charlotte ritchie! it was like wow this girl is everywhere!

anyways, i'm not sure what her aims are atm... she's done quite a bit of comedy but am i the only one who thinks she would body a crime series? or something like broadchurch?

glad you got a chance to catch my response and watch some fun things! i was thinking a little more about what else to recommend, and i think if you enjoy the quirky nature of repertoire then you should check out huge davies, and if you enjoy the storytelling format like greg davies typically does then you should try out dara ó briain and russell howard (maybe the 2021 lubricant special to start) :) enjoy!!

hahaha this is funny... it's a good question 😅 there are a few reasons... he's good bantz! he doesn't take himself too seriously, laughs at himself, can be teased, isn't mean spirited. people really appreciate that. plus, he represents a lot of people who aren't otherwise on tv — not primetime bbc, at least. there starts to be an issue when he just...doesn't try, doesn't contribute. he's fallen asleep on like three different shows? didn't he just...not show up to the second-half of his bakeoff special? often he's got nothing to say? mo really carried the convos on his talk show, his teammates carried him on bfq, and so on. he just doesn't seem to have the interest or perhaps the stamina (orrr perhaps the respect) for long records 😅

anyways, he was being pushed for a little while, but that appears to have stopped. he's hasn't been around too much lately 🤔 (tho ngl idk what he's up to!)

Imagine format; mixed perspectives between the Operator and the reader, written in second person!

Phantom - no, the Blood Diamond of the Crimson Troupe -, his body was a puppet on strings. The curtain parted as he entered the stage; dressed in an ostentatious outfit of red and black, face hidden by his distinctive white mask, and eyes glowing with indescribable malice.

A reverberating voice from overhead began its announcement, “The time has come. The red moon is here. The stringed puppets are all dancing. All for the most supreme art. Now go, my ‘Blood Diamond’, go. They are the audience you have eagerly awaited.” The spotlight fell upon the Feline, all the eyes in the room drew to him. His movements weren't his own as he slowly lifted his arm and began to summon his Arts. The stage and all surrounding it was ready, he was ready.

A commotion from his audience took the Blood Diamond’s attention. There, you stood far from the stage with your weapon in hand, surrounded by your squadmates all immobilized by shock, and Shalem’s hand holding your wrist tightly to prevent you from moving. For a moment - just a moment - you all simply stared at the Feline, wide-eyed and transfixed.

You had stepped into the Castle with not an ounce of hesitation. You had stood before its gates, posture firm like a commander, or the confident lead actor of a play, perhaps; when you had moved forward, the rest of the Squad had followed behind. You had persisted through a near-endless traverse through the Castle, ignoring your aching, worry-riven heart, with the only thought in your mind being to find him and return him to Rhodes Island safely.

Now, however; as the Blood Diamond stared directly into you, his irises darkened by malevolence, fear took hold of your entire being and shattered any semblance of bravery you had left with its claws.

Shalem opened his mouth and attempted to tell something to you, but he wasn’t able to say a word. In a flash of movement you tore your arm from his hand, let your weapon drop to the floor, and began sprinting towards the stage.

The Blood Diamond’s eyes remained on you as you quickly approached. Your hand outstretched to him and your lips moved, ‘Phantom’, however your voice failed you and only produced something just barely above a whisper. Before you could come any closer, Shalem rushed forward and hurried to wrap his arms around your form, preventing you from moving.

The Feline made no reaction at you - not even a slight furrow of his brow or miniscule twitch of his lynx ears - as a heart-wrenching dread fell upon your facial expression. He only tore his gaze away from yourself and Shalem; something deep within his chest couldn’t bear to look for any longer.

His Arts leaving flickers of crimson behind and the spotlight following after him, the Blood Diamond descended from the stage. As he neared you, his eyes squeezed shut; he prepared to finally strike, to sing.

It was only then that you finally found your voice again - “Phantom! Please, it’s me!!” You yelled suddenly, words leaving your throat shakily and breaking by the end of your sentence. The Feline before you froze; his lips fell agape, his eyes snapped open, then his gaze immediately fixed onto you.

You were struggling against Shalem and desperately trying to rush towards him instead, your face confused and twisted in affliction, as if seeing him like he was inflicted physical wounds on you. “Phantom!!” You tried again, louder this time, and your eyes began to fill with tears - when they spilt onto your cheeks, the Blood Diamond’s heart suddenly surged.

What was he doing? Why were you here?

With that, his mind rapidly became a scrambled cacophony, dissonance between his own thoughts and a voice in his head that wasn't his own causing pain to rush to his temples. His breathing became uneven and his heartbeat was now deafening in his ears.

This was not who he was, was it?

Though he made an effort to resist, whatever was possessing him forced him to step forward, to follow the script; the Feline’s motions were strained when he raised his hand to at last strike down with his Arts and prepared his voice to sing.

Then - as his mouth parted to release the first note - in a last attempt, you cried out, “LUCIEN!!”

The name - his name - from your lips was a blade, finally cutting the Blood Diamond away from the strings controlling him. The hostility flickered from his eyes, he covered a hand over his mouth, the crimson Arts surrounding him dissipated; he returned to you, once again becoming himself. Phantom collapsed to his knees.

A silence rested upon the entire room, slowly. Your chest ached from the assault of your hammering heart, your face was wet with tears; you silently begged this to be truly over and not be another one of the Castle’s hallucinations. Shalem and yourself became utterly still, both your eyes fixed raptly to the Feline on the floor. He wearily lifted his head, then a raspy and quiet whisper came from his lips, “...little kitten?”

You were certain you had never moved so fast in your life.

Breaking out of Shalem’s hold, you rushed towards Phantom and fell to the ground right in front of him, “Lucien! I’m right here- I’m here!” You took his cheeks into your hands, unbelievably gentle. Hastily, you removed his white mask from his face and discarded it to the floor; the moment your gaze locked to his, your uneven heartbeat calmed and relief melted onto your facial expression then down your body. The Feline’s copper eyes were soft, tender - albeit slightly glazed over -, and most importantly, familiar and truly his. The hint of a smile came to your lips, “...You’re back.”

Phantom rested against your affectionate touch, placing one of his own hands over yours and answering quietly, “Yes…Yes, I’m with you…it is over-” His sentence was cut off by a rough cough, which quickly evolved into a fit of hacks and gasps that ripped through his body, “Ack- my…my throat, little kitten-” Pressing on the Originium crystal in his pharynx with one hand, he shakily attempted to grab at something attached to your belt with the other - an Oripathy Infection monitor.

You jolted, snapping into motion. After taking the Infection monitor off your belt and in your hand, you used a moment to remove the broken remnants of his previous one from his neck; you brought the device close, and Phantom’s hands guided your own and assisted you in clasping it around his throat. It locked shut with a ‘click’, firmly suppressing the Originium Crystal.

Intertwining both of his hands with your own, you waited for his coughing to cease. When it did, you piped up softly, “Is that better? A-Are you okay?” He nodded in response, “I’m fine, I thank you greatly.” With his composure regained enough, he focused his gaze on your face - a choice which he was quick to regret, as he felt his heart sink to the floor at the sight.

The relief on your expression had been immense, however it was merely ephemeral. Now, your facial features were trembling and your eyes were becoming tearful once more; though it was fading, the fear that had gripped you just moments before still clutched onto your body. The Feline felt the tremors in your hands - your hands that were so tightly squeezing onto his, as if he would vanish if you were to let go.

“L-Lucien…I-” When you couldn’t restrain your emotions any longer, small sobs racked through your body and tears quickly fell down your cheeks - Phantom’s heart shattered and he found himself choking on its pieces, unable to speak.

So you did instead, rambling through your crying, “I-I was so, so worried about you. When the Doctor told me y-you were suddenly gone and no one could find you anywhere, I was just- just terrified.” Sniffling, you hesitantly released one of his hands in order to wipe your face with your sleeve, “And when the Squad and I were sent out to Victoria to rescue you…I-I was scared that when we found you, you were going to- to be hurt, or y-you wouldn’t be able to regain your senses, o-or you were dead-” Just speaking that last statement aloud, just the prospect of it, broke any composure you were still straining to keep.

As he watched you collapse into plaintive cries, Phantom’s lynx ears flattened against his head and shame overtook his face expression; guilt weighed down on him, so heavy that he struggled to breathe. You deserved better than this, the Feline told himself, better than him; he’d never be able to atone for all the distress and heartache you had been forced through because of him.

Though strained, his voice returned to him, “Hush now, little kitten. You need not say anymore…come, come here.” Though he felt unfit to hold you, Phantom nevertheless brought his arms around your form and into his embrace; one of his hands placed itself on the back of your head in order to gently guide your face to the curve between his shoulder and neck, the other coming to rub up and down your spine in a soothing manner. The Feline’s movements were slow, uncertain; he waited for you to flinch away and refuse his touch, ‘justly so’, he believed.

And yet, you didn't. Instead, your body lost its posture once in his hold; you curled into him, nuzzling into his neck and bringing your hands to his chest where they clenched into fists, fingers closing tightly on the fabric of his clothing. Phantom’s eyes widened, your unexpected closeness prompting a small fission of shock to shoot through him. He was only stiff for but a second - under your warmth, his body involuntarily melted into your own. The Feline’s hands slid down your form and he wrapped his arms around your waist, then his head lowered to rest upon your shoulder. For a short while, the two of you simply remained like that.

When your sobbing quieted to small sniffles, the Feline went on speaking, “Though it is not enough, I deeply apologize to you. I…I believed I’d long since slain those of the troupe…but it seems that is not so, and I fear I was wrong. The fault…the fault is all mine.” Body suddenly stiffening and jaw now tight, Phantom began to recoil from you, “My little kitten, you…you should not be here. You need to take your leave quickly, there is nothing to be gained from staying alongside me. The shadows and the evil they hide, my sins…none of this is anything you ought to bear.”

However, you didn't allow him to move away. You shook your head against his shoulder, before pulling him closer by the cloth of his shirt and wrapping your arms around his neck. You replied, “N-No, Lucien, stop. I don’t care about any of that…I’m never leaving you, o-okay?” Worried he wouldn't believe your words unless you reinforced them somehow, with careful hands you trailed your fingers up past his nape. They combed through his hair and stroked over his lynx ears gently, as you went on, “…I’m just so happy you’re safe and you can come back home to Rhodes Island. I don’t know what I would’ve done if…if something happened to you...” The Feline’s reply didn't come right away, his mouth fell agape and his eyes widened slightly at your ever-so tender words.

He, whom the darkness constantly treaded behind and whom tragedy loomed over, was not deserving of you; Phantom had convinced himself so, his mind told him so. What made him worthy of the words that came from your heart? What made him worthy to hold you as he was, as if you were his?

Though, even so, the Feline was unable to restrain himself from once again easing into your arms, a serene expression on his face. If you gave your love to him unconditionally, if you allowed him to rest in the safety of your embrace, then he would never ever refuse it and would be forever grateful.

Phantom lifted his head from your shoulder in order to leave a light, fleeting kiss on the crown of your head. His eyelids closed shut, and he lingered there for a moment, before speaking finally - a whisper and words honest, “No. It’s I who would find myself lost without you…many thanks, little kitten. ”

The sound of soft footfalls approaching reminded the Feline that you and him weren't alone; one of his lynx ears twitched, and his eyes opened. Shalem stood a short distance from the two of you, with Miss Christine - when had she gotten here? - trailing after him, “...Welcome back then, Phantom. Ah, beg pardon for disturbing you both…but shall we go now? Surely, by remaining in this Castle, we would only be inviting more disaster.”

Though reluctantly, pulled away from Phantom’s embrace. After taking a moment to wipe your face of any wetness and to gather yourself with a long, steady breath, you looked to Shalem and the rest of your squadmates. “You’re right. Please, let’s all get out of here. I want to leave Calais-Blason, go back home, and never see this Castle again...” You remarked with a sharp sigh, rising up from the floor. Phantom followed, moving to stand as well, “Yes, we oughtn’t tarry here…” - but you were at his side in an instant, before he could attempt to lift himself off the ground. You brought his arm around your shoulders, “Lucien, careful…here, I’ve got you.”, and assisted him up.

The Blood Diamond’s performance had been brought to an abrupt end. The curtain was closed, the script discarded, and the stage abandoned. It was time for Phantom to leave from under the spotlight of the Crimson Troupe, and return to Rhodes Island.

“...Little kitten, wait.”

You blinked, immediately turning your head to look to him. Phantom slowly inhaled, then his words left his lips, carrying with them every bit of adoration and gratitude he had, “I love you…endlessly, with all that I am.”

A sincere smile arose to your face, and you replied with not even the slightest delay, “And I love you more, Lucien.”

“The Blood Diamond”, “Phantom”; anyone could call him whatever they wanted, but he would always be Lucien to you.

I wanna hear you talk more about Cody because he makes me insane.

Anon, I would LOVE to talk about Cody. He makes me insane too, he's been one of my favorite pnat characters since I first got into the comic (he was my ultimate favorite until Violet shoved him out of that spot a few months later). Putting all of this under a Read More because it got to be a LOT

It's hard to say what his initial appeal for me was. I think I mostly loved his whole theme of masks and actors and mysteries! The school store scene and its surrounding scenes was my favorite part of pnat basically from the moment I first saw it, and I was DELIGHTED to find out that all of these background characters had insane, hidden depth to them. Cody was especially delightful because him being a dhampir is a crazier fucking reveal than even the school store's existence itself, and once that was revealed it was like a layer of his character had been peeled away. Suddenly his status as the nice, responsible boy was turned on its head, revealing an underlying personality that's a million times more jaded and hurt than was ever previously comprehensible and FUCK it was just so!! Good!! I don't think it was ever about him being a monster, I think it was about the reveal and the intrigue.

I've always loved digging into his character. Before Chapter 8, Chapter 5 was the majority of what we had to go off of for his characterization, and what was in Chapter 5 was already a goddamn goldmine of information. There's a reason why Chapter 5 is my favorite pnat chapter (though my favorite page in the whole comic is in Chaper 4 lmao)!

In the centuries-old past of late 2020, your local weirdo Junk was incapable of separating Cody and Violet from each other in aus, analyses, headcanons, etc. They used to be tied for my favorite character, and it was because I was (and still am) fascinated by their dynamic, the way their respective complexes and insecurities and emotional walls cause problems for them... their argument in Chapter 5 was my favorite scene-within-a-scene for a very long time. All this to say that there's a reason I keep bringing up Violet in a post about Cody; it's still really hard for me to consider one without the other. I love the way they're both protectors (knighthood theming goes crazy in this comic), and I love the way they differ so fundamentally in why they're protectors and how they approach that sense of protectiveness. I love the way Cody jumps to revenge during the Hijeff situation, and I love the way Violet counters that with appalled confusion.

God, can we talk about the revenge thing? The way Cody behaves is fascinating. He's very clearly picked up certain behaviors from his dad, but he thinks that makes him some sort of evil rather than understanding that everyone is a product of their environment. Compared to his dad he's just so... fundamentally kind, with his heart in the right place, but he can't see that because he's 12 years old, in a horrible situation with a horrible parent, and a complicated social situation at school and and-

I'm really glad that he has nice things he can cling to. I can't imagine the nightmare it must be to live in that house. He's got fun clothes he can wear at home on the weekend, he gets to go over to Jeff's house, and those might seem like small victories but they are still victories. I really hope he gets out of there soon. Jesus Christ

Oh oh oh, let's talk about fancontent! I'm going to talk about my own stuff, because there are a lot of very old ideas that will probably never see the light of day otherwise. In the post I'm assuming you came from, anon, I mentioned how I'd mischaracterized my way into the right characterization, and by that I mean both my earliest and most recent interpretations of him really played up his cutesy, smiley demeanor. Very anime girl esque vibe, very over exaggerated movements, very 'actor in a play' type energy. I would often come up with au's that would shove him into some sort of magical girl role, often paired with a healthy amount of body horror for the tonal dissonance. It was, of course, also an excuse to put him in cute, fun outfits. To this day I struggle to draw him in normal outfits that don't make him look like the leader of a magical girl. (If you want a funtastic magical girl au that was actually made for me, check out astralibrary's AU over here.) One of my favorite au's I've ever made was one in which Cody was a magical warrior from another world who fell through a portal and ended up in an ordinary, spirit-free Mayview, where he then had to rely on Violet to get him through the day normal-guy-style. Looking back it's one of my favorite au's in part BECAUSE it involves so many shenanigans revolving around Cody trying to be normal and failing miserably. I believe it to be accurate to canon LMAO

Yandere!John falling for an SO that is socially awkward.

John is definitely going to be the delusional and manipulative type of yandere.

Worst part about all of this is that when you're socially awkward you might struggle to see signs other people might easily catch. That's going to come back and bite you very quickly with John.

As we've all seen, John is a very good actor. He had everyone fooled he was a helpless cripple for a very long time. That being said, there are some subtle signs that you can look out for at the beginning. Read: subtle.

You witnessed him getting beaten down one day and walk away absolutely pissed off and think to yourself "that dude needs a friend and so do I." And so you conjured up the will to not completely put your foot in your mouth and began to seek him out.

At the beginning, John didn't even notice you. You were quiet and unassuming, though you stumbled over your own words a lot and got nervous very easily around other people. You were just another student that didn't matter to him. He rebuffed your attempts to talk to him far too many times.

Ironically, Seraphina was the one to point out how you were trying to befriend him. At first, he doesn't believe her as nobody would willingly try to become friends with the cripple, right?? Then he saw you, sitting alone in the corner, quietly watching a group of friends pass you by with a look of longing in your eyes and was immediately intrigued. Especially so when he approached you and your face lit up when he invited you to sit with him and Seraphina.

It didn't take long for him to start noticing you after that. His eyes would immediately seek you out whether he wanted them to or not. He began to take notice how hard you were trying to make friends- and how easily they rebuked you. Just like he did.

John began to grow protective of you after that realization. You were so kind, so good, so perfect. You might be a little slow socially but just made you all the cuter in his opinion. His intrigue quickly morphed into infatuation and from there he began to notice things that he never noticed before.

The way your smile would soften just for him- the way your eyes would glitter whenever he would go out of his way to approach you- rushing after him when he left his books on the rooftop by accident...

You liked him, too, right? All the signs pointed that you did. You were always so sweet to him. You just had to be into him- there was no other explanation.

From there, things began to spiral. Johns mask began to slip as he began to lash out at the other students for even daring to look at you weird. It probably won't take long for you to begin to notice something was very wrong at that point.

But it only grows worse from there. As John begins to grow more obsessive, he starts to stalk walk you home from a distance. He wouldn't want you getting hurt when he could've been there to stop it, after all.

Confronting him at that point will be an instant loss. You'll be gaslit and lied to so hard, he'll have you sure you're going insane. And he's so efficient at keeping up his lies that there'll be next to no chance to catch him in the act of doing so.

Slowly, he isolates you. Any friends you may have had are chased off or beaten down at the first opportunity. Oh, he won't kill anyone; maybe put them so deep in a coma they might never wake up but hey, theres always a risk when getting into fights, right? Seraphina may try to convene at this point but John easily wards her off and by the time she realizes she was right, it'll be too late.

Then, when you're left all alone and so lonely, John will move in and sweep you off your feet. He'll worship you so completely you won't be able to think of anybody but him. He wouldn't want his goddess to feel like she needs anybody else after all. He's all you need- he's always known that and now you do, too.

if you don't mind much, what was every thought that crossed your mind during ray persons scenes in gen kill?

that being said, i shall give the people what they want! so ray is the kind of annoying that i live and breathe for. the kind of annoying that makes me wanna open up his brain and dive inside. just pure unadulterated unhinged energy! zero shame or dignity present in that one. none whatsoever. but it's endearing y'know? i wanna tell him to shut the fuck up but i also want him to live in my pocket and give me a running commentary on my life?

i didn't wanna love him at first. it's gonna sound weird but it felt too predictable for me to go for yet another smartass idiot who can't for the life of him know when to shut the fuck up. so i kind of rebelled against myself and held out for a while. eventually though, he did wear me down and i did find myself shaking my head disapprovingly but smiling fondly alongside brad. i think though it was the deeper aspects of his character that finally drew me in, the ones that you have to look deeper into, in the shorter scenes that maybe don't seem that important but have subtler little details.

and if we do wanna get deep about it then i always enjoy a character who clings desperately onto humour and sheer absurdity as a coping mechanism. it's pretty clear that ray falls within that category and i did enjoy getting to see a little bit of how he reacts when he can't reach for that coping mechanism as easily, when he's too exhausted and fed up to pull the mask on.

another thing i noticed that made me appreciate him from just a really small action is in the episode where everyone is trying to cheer walt up. ray uses his method of being a comedic annoyance to give walt some kind of normalcy that he probably isn't getting from the others, who are trying to reassure him and look after him in a more direct and 'impactful' way. but ray decides to go and basically dry hump his head and say stupid shit and yeah, walt is a bit irritated bc of everything he's dealing with, but as a viewer, we get to see ray actively using the way the other marines see him to try and give walt a sense of "nothing is going to change, you're still you and i'm still me". whilst brad, nate and espera are there basically outwardly telling him not to worry (and walt needed that too, i love my dads <3), ray takes a much subtler approach in supporting him. which when you think about it, really is the opposite to how we talk about ray usually. he's anything but subtle generally, so i think this little bit of information and look into his character, and intentions, was something that just really stood out to me bc he chose that approach for walt, imo at least. i know it's a tiny tiny scene but it just helped confirm a lot of my thoughts about how ray approaches things and how, sure, he is naturally unhinged and doesn't think before he speaks a lot, but sometimes, you can actively see him using that humour and those jokes and all his ridiculous antics to pull his friends out of whatever dark crevice their mind has fallen into. he does it with brad as well. i feel like his actor portrayed those purposeful moments really well also, because for me, i could tell when he was just being ridiculous and himself and talking shit, and when he was playing it up to keep others focused on him and not the other shit going on around them. anyway. this is one of the reasons i love his character and his portrayal a lot. it's not lost on me that it actually is a back-and-forth with ray that eventually pulls walt out of his downward spiral either, at least surface-level. it was a team effort, but ray continuing to prode him eventually got him to 'snap out of it' and feel like he was being treated normally.

and as much as i loved his comedic scenes throughout the series, and all his songs and ways of keeping everyone entertained, i really enjoyed his portrayal and depiction in the last two or so episodes, where you start to notice the mask slipping. it's thrown back on pretty quickly, but i appreciated that we got that small insight into how everything has actually affected him and it actually felt different afterward. he goes back to being a smartass and being the annoying friend who never shuts up, but you can see he's changed somewhere deep down underneath as well.

and the fact that it's his final look toward trombley that kind of sums up the conclusion of the show and the true realisation about what they did there. i don't know if i can explain it coherently yet, i guess i'm still processing what i'm trying to say about that final scene. i'm sure it's been said a thousand times by someone, a lot more eloquently that i ever could, but his final look really spoke volumes to me. his reaction to trombley and the video and then finally walking away felt like a confirmation of the message that the show presents to us throughout the whole series, but which they let us pick up and spin around for a few episodes to fully absorb, before letting ray finish it up with a single look. idk, maybe i'm just rambling.

maybe this is completely different from what you were asking for anon, so i'm really sorry if it disappoints you, or you were just looking for silly commentary on all the unhinged shit that comes out of his mouth lmao but yeah. i am a little bit obsessed with ray person. i truly would like to examine his brain up close.
