Okay we’re all making jokes about Daemon’s little Oedipal episode but I do think it is a really good way to show just how the Targ incest-superiority-exceptionalism fucks everyone in this family up. You get taught literally from birth to find romantic and sexual intimacy in your familial relationships.
You’re Daemon. You’re a son so you ought to marry your sister. But you have no sister, only an older brother who REALLY ought to have a sister to marry. And this is how things must be. Your parents are brother and sister, THEIR parents are brother and sister. It must be brother and sister but you have no sister. Do you become the sister then? But you can’t, because that’s wrong too. You are a son, you must be a son and act as a son. And you should love your brother as only a brother. And this is how things must be. But how can you when you’ve been taught not to? How can you when you know if you had been a girl, you wouldn’t be allowed to just see him as a brother. He is your brother. You should have been his wife. But you never can be. And this is how things must be. You never knew your mother. But she is a woman and she is related to you. And haven’t you always been taught exactly what that means in this family? You’ve crossed so many boundaries but now suddenly there is a line. You don’t think you really want her in this way. But you never knew her and you don’t know how else to show love in this family. You don’t know how to love her as family in a life where family means lover. Except when it doesn’t. And gods forbid you cross that line and desire your family in a way that is suddenly wrong. This is how things must be.

(Apparently) unpopular opinion: heartstopper is not cringe 💁🏼‍♂️ it’s just not.
Like can queer people just be happy and in love without everyone calling it cringe? God. Just sit down and let us have this.

in episode 1x06 we see how alicent interacts with each of her children, considering that she shows her affection with touch.
Tumblr media
she touches helaena's arm, which openly displeases helaena.
in the same scene she hugs aemond, and he sinks into it. (i like that both moments happen in the same scene, with the two children she's affectionate with)
Tumblr media
then we have aegon, the child she does not give affection to, but rather grabs his face harshly.
Tumblr media
she then realizes she lost control a bit and was too harsh, even if it was to protect him and make him understand what's at stake, and she brushes his hair, trying to soothe the hurt she already inflicted.

it does not work.

do u guys also think that when the coven where sharing their scars in ep. 4, it was because of how they kinda sensed alice’s sorrow about having caused scars similar to hers to the other women and they wanted to make her feel less “ashamed” as to say abt her scars? kinda try to make her more comfortable with them and the scars, showing her they are a natural part of life yada yada ya or is that just me?

Bill going to the same church as the Chasity family has some crazy implications when you think about it. Bc if the church is preaching anything similar to what the Chasitys are preaching (think Grace saying Ruth is in hell for being bisexual) it must've been really hard on Alice to go there, and to know Bill still goes there. No wonder "Why don't you date someone like Grace Chasity"/"At least she's nice to me at church!" set her off

A Margaret Beaufort Analysis of Alicent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rewatched HOTD, the White Queen and the White Princess, and I noticed a lot of similarities between Alicent and Margaret Beaufort (mother to King Henry VII and a powerful political mastermind during the Wars of the Roses), that I'd dare say the historical Margaret Beaufort had to be the inspiration behind Alicent's character.
(1) Both Margaret and Alicent were married off to older men they did not desire, at a very young age. Margaret was SEVEN when she married her first husband, TWELVE when she married Edmund Tudor, and THIRTEEN when she bore Henry Tudor and was widowed. Alicent is around fifteen when she marries Viserys in HOTD and becomes pregnant for three consecutive years, thus having three children by the age of eighteen.
(2) Character-wise, Margaret and Alicent are both ambitious women navigating the deep patriarchal waters of their era to secure power for their sons. They are defined by their unwavering devotion to their sons’ political futures. Margaret lives her life with the singular goal of placing her only son, Henry Tudor, on the English throne. Everything she does—from political maneuvering to religious justification—is in service of this mission. Each action, from high treason to committing murder, she views as her calling: "it is God's will" for her to advocate for her son's rights, his future, but also his very life. Not securing the throne would mean execution for her, her son Henry, and his supporters. Similarly, Alicent's primary motivation in placing Aegon on the throne is to preserve her children's lives from the impending threat their mere existence as heirs poses. Just like Henry Tudor, Aegon is a threat to the claimants of the throne, and just like Margaret, Alicent grasps the political reins and has her son Aegon crowned king. Alicent, too, believes that it is her duty, even her moral obligation, to ensure that her family retains power.
(3) Margaret and Alicent's lives are governed by "duty and sacrifice." Religious conviction is central in how they perceive and justify their actions. Margaret is deeply pious and believes that her cause is divinely ordained—God wants her son to be king, and she was chosen by God to fulfill that mission. Alicent's religious and moral values are based on the faith of the Seven and give her a sense of righteousness, but also serve as a veil for her ambitions.
(4) In terms of power, both Margaret and Alicent operate within systems that limit their authority due to their gender. Nevertheless, they find ways to influence powerful men around them. Margaret works through her marriages and alliances. Alicent, as Queen and later Queen Dowager, wields considerable soft power through her father Otto, her children, and the Small Council. In both cases, their roles as mothers are the key to their influence. Margaret ruthlessly supports rebellions, plots against rival claimants, and is willing to spill blood for her son’s ascension, the sole Lancaster heir. Alicent ultimately supports a coup that defies her husband’s wishes and initiates a war for the throne, being the mother of three male Targaryen heirs. Even when they struggle with guilt and moral conflict, they remain steadfast in the belief that what they’re doing is right—or at least necessary, and further pursue their influence.
Overall, both Margaret Beaufort and Alicent Hightower stand as compelling portraits of women and queens who challenge their era’s expectations. They are politically savvy, morally complex, ambitious beyond the norm, and they succeed in shaping their political world through strategy, sacrifice, and unyielding maternal will.
And before you come at me, yes, they are not entirely the same. I'd say that Alicent is a more sensitive and humanized representation of Margaret Beaufort, but I can see the parallels and the inspiration behind Alicent's conception as a character modeled to some extent after historical-Margaret's persona.

Agatha All Along is a show that is better on the rewatch, fantastic to see how little comments mold how Billys magic changes the Road/ trials.
Like how Mrs Hart Sharon was talking about botox and suddenly their faces look like that. Or further symptoms of the "poison" don't happen until after Jenn explains it. Or how after Billy learns about Alice's curse or Agatha's mom that we see them in trials!!
Loved the rewatch how we are able to see how the environment and commentary impacts the trials ahead. Especially how Agatha like steers Billy's magic/ the Road certain directions! Also loved watching Lilia's little moments knowing the context behind them.
Just great writing!

the small way that both rhaenyra and alicent's hearts break in this scene when viserys announces his new wife. not once is alicent consulted about becoming queen. rhaenyra is led to believe that viserys will wed laena, and goes as far as to comfort him and reassure him that she understands why he needs to remarry. and in one moment both of their autonomy is robbed - as rhaenyra loses what is essentially her only friend, and alicent loses her life. her entire life. and rhaenyra is a bystander to all of it and can only watch.

My biggest problem with Hotd s2 was the thesis change between the seasons. They went from the only thing that could take down the house of the dragon was itself, alluding to the dragons fighting dragons, the war of kin, revenge and ego killing the last magics of old Valyria the house would try desperately to regain and replicate to their doom until Daenerys to the prophecy is being written beyond us, we are just moving parts towards the end, we are pawns. The reason that doesn't work is because it defeats the point of the dance. The only character that might try to change their fate is Aemond, but for the rest of the characters, they have no stake but the end, but to play their part and tie it to their interest to what they know will happen. Instead of being too self-interested, too self-motivated to see the end, the destruction and what they'll lose. It's a mishandling of prophecy where they have to pile on efforts to make it the same ending instead of building on the start.
