Nothing funnier to me than a fansite that horrifically white washes pics of the guys until they genuinely look like walking corpses but then will have DO NOT EDIT in all their captions like baby.... if there's anyone here who should have the editing software taken away, it's you...

I will NEVER shut up about this because the amount of interpretations of the 1992 production of Elisabeth there are is INSANE.
First, we have the character of Der Tod. Who is he? You can see them as an actual entity who guides souls to the afterlife. You can see them as a physical manifestation of the characters' inner struggles. You can also see them as an entity conjured up by Lucheni in the purgatory as a way to shift the blame off of himself perhaps.
What about his intentions? You can view Tod as an otherworldly, immortal entity who genuinely had feelings for Elisabeth or you can see him as someone who was obsessed with her perseverance and defiance and only wished to collect her soul and did not actually care for her (even though he does say he loved her in the prologue?). One interesting part is how Tod lays Elisabeth's body on the floor at the very end. What could that mean?
On the topic of intentions, there's also the case of Tod's relationship with Rudolf. Was Tod merely using Rudolf to send Elisabeth into despair once her only son had passed? Or was there a genuine connection between the two, with Tod being a true friend to Rudolf and not having much influence on the Kronprinz's choice to actually take the gun?
And the visual aspect of the original 1992 Tod played by Uwe Kröger? Gives you so much room for interpretation as well. Is Tod's form crafted to suit the taste of the characters? Or is it just the usual form he takes when interacting with any human? Is the way he looks ACTUALLY his usual form? Maybe he doesn't even have a body but needs to look human-like so that mortals don't automatically run away screaming. And do the characters actually see him the same way the audience does? In "Maladie", he does come to Elisabeth with virtually no disguise (he doesn't even have the hat he uses in later versions). He kind of claims to be Dr. Seeburger, how come neither the staff nor Elisabeth recognise him when we, the audience, can clearly see it's Tod?
There's also the aspect of Tod willingly participating in Lucheni's staging of Elisabeth's life. He's not really one of the puppets, so does that mean every now and then, whenever Lucheni needs to go over the entire story while arguing with the Judge, Der Tod comes over out of his free will and joins in to play his part? What does he get out of this? Does he simply wish to see Elisabeth or Rudolf again? Who knows!
You can't be certain when it comes to anything about 1992 Tod's character or the entire musical for that matter. It's all up to the viewer to decide what they think is the truth and that's why I feel like so many people can find this musical interesting - you aren't served a ready-made story, but can somewhat choose what you think happens or what certain characters are like. The mysterious feel of it all is what really makes this version stand out.

Like you said in general there are so many wasted potential with the stories and characters ,one of them that really bugged me from the start was that how herge never revealed tintin's past or even his name lmao, and I see that almost all the poor fans are always curious about it and they can't do anything except writing fanfics about his past because there's no information canonically about him,I know herge kinda wanted him to be a character and hero so that everyone could identity with him but fr seeing a boy in like his 16 all alone with just a dog was always sad for me even if he could handle himself well and being greatly smart and successful for his age, just imagine he wrote his protagonist all this time without a past so it just sucks a bit
Do you want my honest opinion on that?
Yeah, it is frustrating we have no idea of Tintin's past life or even his real name or a certain age or anything at all. However I also find it genius, the smartest and most cunning move a writer could ever do. You want to make an unforgettable hero, one who will be relatable for most people regardless of age and origins, one who can transform into whatever you want? A symbol? Then this is the way.
Most people, and especially fans, have the tendency to overexplain and try to find a reason for every single thing. When we're given a mystery we can't help but imagine what is hidden, what is the truth, all the possible scenarios. This is what Tintin and all the rest of the characters are to us. Familiar mysteries. People who we think we know but we don't know the basic things like their first name or how old they are. We know things we might consider irrelevant or not important, like how Haddock hates mineral water or how Tintin likes honey sandwiches. Yet these things are what they make them feel real and humans, like they're close to us. And that makes our curiosity even bigger and us more committed to the series.
I dunno how much on purpose that was from Herge's side. Probably he had never even thought that Tintin would become that huge. He might have wanted to just create a hero for everyone and in the years that followed he found no reason to certify anything on him in fear of not being anymore relatable. And I totally understand that. Imagine writing a character like that and everyone pressures you to reveal more while they are having their own thoughts of what the truth can be. I wouldn't dare to make certain anything and disappoint and eventually lose fans. Maybe he wouldn't have lost fans or even have gotten more, we will never know, but for him it was still a risk, and a risk he wasn't interested enough to take.
I get frustrated too but at the same time I like that Herge was so open to any possibilities for his character and he never wanted to dictate anything. With his attitude he basically said "Tintin is whatever you believe him to be" and I can't help but admire him for that. I could never do that or even if I did I would struggle to do so.
It is wasted potential and I would love to see more of their past. However when I see people insisting on knowing what was Herge really thinking and trying to find proof of every speculation on his work and interviews and whatever I can't help but think: do you want to know what was Herge really thinking or do you want to get the ok for your theories from the creator, to prove you're right and the others are wrong? Wouldn't it be better and more respectful for the creator if we just admit there is not one truth? (Of course I'm not referring to you specifically nonnie but to all of us)
So yeah, I love to see what every fan thinks for Tintin's past and basic info like his true name. I love to read headcanons and fanfics about the life of every character. And what I love anymore is that all these versions give the characters more life and with our commitment to it we also give life to the series and the fandom.
[And personally speaking I don't need Herge's or any writer's approval for anything I think and imagine for their work.]

the more time i spend on the internet the more i realise that people need to learn when to shut the fuck up about what other people do/believe/like. everyone has different opinions, likes, hobbies and preferences, and as long as theyre not hurting someone what does it matter? youre not a better person for not believing in something or not liking something, youre just a different person and that is okay

ok in order to give my poor mental state some relief from the theseus' ship that is currently season 8 lloyd (a take that i think is relatively self-explanatory but something i will absolutely elaborate on if you are so inclined to hear it because i am terribly, terribly terribly upset about it and i do love to hear myself speak, insofar as that goes via text on the internet), i have properly picked up the fic that my dear wonderful friend recommended to me a very long time ago and im only like halfway through but it is so delightful that i feel the need to recommend it to you anyways (and also her taste is incredible and she would never steer me wrong). the ninjago writers wish they had what this author has. i am so delighted. i am so delighted. this is perfect. this is exactly what i wanted out of this show. sometimes, my dear and beloved mutual jay rose, good things happen to those who suffer, and to call this unspeakably generous gift from the gracious lord above a good thing would be the understatement of the century. go read it.
Tumblr media
(i would absolute love for you to elaborate on it that is such a good way to phrase it) and i am VERY MUCH excited about your rec i am in deseperate need after churning through 70% of the ao3 tag with the pickiness of a child and trail mix.

What's that post about specifically, can you say? 👀 Tho I agree I've been reading some really condescending 'takes' in this fandom lately (usually directed at softer content but maybe the other way exists too). I think it's interesting I never see any 'discourse' regarding the other lord's characterizations, only the Dimi's 👀
it was exactly about that baha, although like i've said, i don't want to start shit, it's more just a genuine question why it bothers people so much that someone writes a character as softer. like? it doesn't matter in the long run.
although yeah, i've seen it more for how to portray the Dimitrescus, which is interesting that we can't seem to come up with a "set" way to write them. but yknow. write them how you want, but you don't need to be hateful when doing so.
i haven't seen much discourse on the other side of things, though i have seen multiple times throughout the months where writing these women as softer is considered "cringey", "bullshit", and "shouldn't be written that way." and it just makes me wonder who y'all are to be telling the entire fandom how to write a character in literal fanfiction, which isn't always supposed to be canon, anyway.

It’s important to recognise that Barbie (2023) criticises both the patriarchy AND the matriarchy. Yes, the Ken’s are just accessories to the Barbies. Yes, they don’t have any say in the government they live under. That’s the point, you’re supposed to feel awful, you’re supposed to want the Kens to have their own agency, you’re supposed to want equality. The Barbie movie explicitly states that the way Barbie treats Ken is wrong, so much so that once he finds a safe space for his masculinity and individual identity he’s so excited to share it with the other Kens.
But they go overboard and replace a matriarchy with a patriarchy and now the same issue exists but in reverse. That’s the POINT!! THATS THE POINT!!! Barbie is not anti-men it’s pro equality PLEASE understand this
13th Aug 2023 UPDATE:
Heeeeey howdy!!
Due to the IMMENSE comments and discussion on this post (thanks ya’ll!!) I’ve decided to update my post with my recent opinions and hopefully clearer explanations!!
First, my original post only considers a very small and very vague analysis of the film!!
Since making this I've read all your comments and learned quite a bit about the matriarchy as it appears in human civilisation. Originally, I was pitting the patriarchy and the matriarchy against each other as though the results of their implementation were equal in the film.
They were not!! Below is the definition of matriarchy I’ll be working off of.
Matriarchy Simple Definition;
Matriarchy is a social system in which women hold the primary power positions in roles of authority. In a broader sense it can also extend to moral authority, social privilege and control of property.
There's a lot to talk about in the Barbie film that would fit better in an essay, so I'll try and condense it into this;
To me, Barbie (2023) is a film about the female experience and the shared connection between women that persists through childhood and adulthood, support and harassment, suffering and joy, mother and daughter.
It uses Barbie as its figurehead because of the immense societal and political impact the doll has had on women, both good and bad (as explained in the film).
The male experience as seen in Barbie (2023) is not the sole focus of the film- rather, it's an accessory (as the Kens are) to Barbie's story, and a necessary aspect of exploration to truly highlight the importance of individualism and healthy personal exploration.
I want to make clear that I in no way think the treatment of the Kens was just as bad as the treatment of the Barbies. I also still agree that the matriarchy fostered by the Barbies wasn’t good for the Kens.
Additionally, I’m aware that this take on Barbie (2023) works strictly within the assumed heteronormative boundaries of gender. There is a lot of nuance in the Barbie film and I don’t think everything can be covered or explained in on Tumblr post— but I hope this clarification helps!!
I hope you're all coming to your own conclusions and analysis of the film in a way that makes sense to you. And for those of you engaging in online conversations and discourse about it, I hope you're keeping yourself and others happy and safe!!!
Much love to you all!! < 3

Girl, you aren't negative for not being up for a conversation or discussion. Their need to be right to the point they would disrespect the people in their life and drive them away is very negative. Wanting to debate which genre a song falls under doesn't make someone optimistic, it seems odd to give so much energy to something like that. It doesn't sound like they want a friend, it sounds like they want someone who just tells them how smart and positive and right they are all the time. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It is so hurtful and frustrating when someone can't respect such simple boundaries
dearest stranger i'm kissing you on the forehead and hugging you rn!!! in all honesty your message really made me happy and reinforced to me that she indeed acted inappropriately & i'm not being crazy for being annoyed about it. i don't mind people having different opinions than me & having discussions but when i can tell that the other person only cares about being right & proving their point a discussion is just exhausting & useless. it's so insane to me that a topic as trivial as a genre of a song can end in someone being like "you're too pessimistic" like??? i definitely should've stopped engaging with her messages way sooner but i genuinely thought she would understand what was bothering me. like it wasn't even about the genre of the song anymore i couldn't care less about that tbh but her inability to respect my wishes & just move on. she turned such an irrelevant topic into smth so unpleasant... btw she recently had a fallout with FOUR people who also told her that conversations with her turned increasingly exhausting & that she would turn trivial things into unnecessary discussions so i'm definitely not alone in this 🤫
