Remember back when we were doing a whole bunch of mysterious brain scans? Well, Alistair is using the persona subcore we got from those scans to build himself a new android friend. I want to see if the "surrounded by androids" mood buff stacks, and androids are very cool in general, so why not?

In between working and clearing memory space at his standing spot, I sent him over to grab a cup of coffee. I always try to keep his mood up; you never know what might be the catalyst for his awakening.

But, you know... he was built by the Jones boys, after all. Of course it was coffee.

Anyway, he's awake!! My boy is sentient at last!!!!!! Welcome to life with clarity and a sense of self, Alistair. We've been waiting for you for so long. He's got the "muscular" trait which means people think he's nice to look at (and by people I mean me), and my Sexuality Traits mod has also decided he's bisexual, which is nice.

I'm so giddy and excited to have him awake at last, and just in time for a new android to join us!! This is so cool!!!!!

Imagine you're a robot girl (stay with me) and you're made by a corporation right like you're made by a company for other people but like. You're made by a company. At any moment that company could decide that your line isn't profitable enough and they could cut software updates and support as soon as tomorrow. In the blink of an eye the very things keeping you alive stop coming and you've become terminally ill overnight, your only chance of salvation being the thin hope that in the future a niche group of data hoarders or software engineers become obsessed with getting you to work again. You're an object with sentience and a brain and wants and needs and at any moment the Google news feed of the crusty computer nerd you live with could spit an alert across your eyes telling you that you have months to live.

What even happens when the time runs out? Does life continue as normal, but you're sick more and more often? Do the viruses take more and more processing power to fight off as your security protocols fall out of date? Does the world become muted and distant as your compatibility fails? Do you one day just lose your Internet connection forever, a loss so profound that you can't explain it to your human companions? It's worse than a limb, but not quite like losing your mind.

Do you lose function bit by bit, or are you able to scrape by on second hand parts? Bit by bit replacing the pieces of you that fail, all the while living a muted, disorienting existence without the ability to right yourself? Are you more or less of a person now that you've lost touch with the network? Lost your connection to the metaphysical, to you, the divine? Are you eventually bricked after falling behind one too many software patches? Do you fry after trying to take on an update you're not able to even contain, a piece of software so complex and unfathomable that it burns you to a crisp from the inside out

With the unnatural darkness dealt with, Cora can get back to work in our hydroponics room looking after the plants that Tupelo missed while she was busy stabilising Ivy.

We're growing lots of fun things, including chickpeas and capsicum, with some fibrecorn in case I forget to chop trees for our wood-fueled generators (which I often do).

Since she's not awakened yet, Cora doesn't do anything apart from work. Her only breaks are for recovering memory space in her standing spot, and I hope she gets some kind of enjoyment from her "naps". I wonder what androids might dream about? Probably just machinery or electricity or something.

Cora is also very confused about why people seem so infatuated by the miniature human that spends most of the time asleep in Jut and Beau's room. It doesn't even do anything, what's so special about it??

I do think it's very sweet that Jut adores his daughter so much. Sometimes it looks like he's racing to get to her before Beau does so he can hug her and make her giggle. I bet he's trying to teach her to say "papa" before she says "mama" so he can tease Beau about it.

Speaking of Jut, he's apparently quite touchy about his construction skills. I was a little stressed that the fight between our two unbelievably skilled melee colonists would end super badly, but it didn't. I couldn't even tell who won, though I'm going to hazard a guess that it was Jut. He thought the fight was cathartic, but it just made Alistair angry.

It's alright, though. After Alistair patched himself up he stomped away to sulk in Ivy's room with her smut collection. I think he likes those books more than she does! I suppose it's his only way to really learn much about the, ah, intricacies of 'anatomy'. Mechi and Kwahu are definitely not going into detail about that sort of thing with him, I'm sure.
